@@mikecantreed And he majored in History and Literature, Norm graduated high school 2 years early and was in college for Mathematics before he dropped out to pursue comedy. Hell I would say Norm probably has more knowledge of literature than Conan considering the references he puts into some of his jokes. Norm was always the smartest person in the room when it comes to entertainers and artists.

Courtney displays TRUCKLOADS of poise and class here. Other guests would've been annoyed by Norm burning up their airtime, but she knows how good he is and she lets him do what he does better than anyone in the business. And it pays off! Salute to Courtney. Rest in peace, Norm.

Courtney Thorne-Smith; what a stunning and rare example of celebrity having no detrimental effect on one’s genuine, delightful personality.
From what I've gathered from a buddy of mine who knows pretty much everybody in Hollywood, she is extremely nice and humble and beautiful and talented and smart and that's why she gets so much work.

She was asked about this interview on the Team Coco channel, and had nothing but nice things to say about Norm, and how genuinely hard she was laughing (especially because it took the heat off of her for a bad movie).
She said in an interview on "Vanity Fair" that it was like being roasted by Don Rickles: "I did 'The Tonight Show' once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that. (...) I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself."

I watched this live airing, I remember spelling it out, at the same time as norm did.
As brilliant as Norm was, this was pretty obvious and Conan saw it instantly. "Do something with that you freak" and the long pause after was merely placing the ball on the tee for Norm.
"Do something with THAT one you freak!" Conan had to know there was a 0% chance Norm was gonna let that fly without the final word.
Conan was always great at setting up comedians and sitting back and letting them hit the slam dunk
Just like Conan said a minute before that: "And I'm waiting... because I KNOW there's more to come!!"
And we never got disappointed. There always was that last extra punch coming in! ^^

When Conan challenges him to make a joke out of the title and he immediately whips B-O-R-E-D out of the clear blue sky, this illustrates what a one of a kind comedian and a first class mind Norm had. The pinnacle of off-the-cuff comedy. All comedians aspire to this.

This segment was dead in the water until Norm pipes in with "Hey are you talking about Melrose place??" and breathes hilarious life into it.
Na it was just more like a normal interview which tend to be pretty boring. You are right about him making it something special though. You honestly couldn't have a normal interview with Norm even if you tried. You can tell Conan just loves it and Norm could bring out the more crazy side of Conan as well.

and TBH I've always skipped over this one because I thought it would just be a celebrity interview. And maybe Ms. Thorne-Smith thought the same. This is yet another CLASSIC McDonald guest spot on Conan, and much to Courtney's credit, she got on b hard immediately while still a Pro. I've already watched it three times in a row. Excellent TV.
It shows the genius of Norm that they don't pick a clip of his interview, but a clip of someone ELSE'S interview because he was such a genius, he could improv the most hilarious lines on the spot.
I've seen this clip many many tines and this is the first time I'm noticing Courtney is funny. She quick witted and funny and actually makes space for Norm and Conan. Like her comedic rhythm is very good.

@@masterchief1520 Melrose Place was an extremely popular primetime show at the time, and they had already been talking about it for several minutes. It's what this actress is most famous for. So obviously Norm knows what they're talking about. He's just playing dumb for a laugh.

The absolute greatest talk show segment in the history of television. I saw it when it originally aired and never forgot it. Years later I found it available on UA-cam. I watch it a few times a year and it never disappoints. Norm MacDonald was a genius and Conan was his ideal foil.

It's straight up mean to just bash someone's film that's about to come out. There's an unwritten rule in these shows is you can only bash a film after it's long come out and done it's box office run. That way you don't get blamed for tanking the film.

I hate that it took me so long to realize Norms sharp wit and talent. His voice used to make me think he was slow and boring so I never really gave him a chance. I am currently making up for my ignorance and enjoying every moment of it. RIP Norm. You were special
I’m pretty much in the same boat. Being Canadian l’m a bit embarrassed that l discovered his comedy so late, but one thing l do have over most people is the knowledge of his theme song. It’s by a band called Doug and the Slugs, whose concept l saw while attending university. They never made it big, partly because the founder, who was also the singer Doug Bennett died fairly young, mid 50s l believe. Anyway l’m now driving everyone around me nuts with my obsession with Norm.

I have two favorite Norm moments, this one and his appearance on Letterman right after he was fired from Weekend Update on SNL. It’s 100% hilarious but the “quisling” parts bring me to my feet every time.
@james Norm made a joke about down syndrome and went on the view to apologize. It’s subtle humor but imo norm at his funniest.
I think Conan had the same joke in his head and queued up Norm bc he couldn't say it.

Norm was on my short list of names of favorite people, back in June when my son was born, in order to decide on a name. We went with Gavin (as in Gavin McInnes) but maybe the world wasn’t big enough for another Norman anyway.

Conan really knew how to take a step back and let the guest land great jokes. Norm was like Robin Williams in that you just had to unleash them.
Every time their conversation started to die down or reach an end, Norm would come in with the funniest remark possible. The best moment in talk show history; absolutely special and timeless.

This just hit me for the first time, even though I've watched countless times. Norm admits he saw her give an interview the night before on a competing show. He basically knew what she was going to talk about. He may have even heard the title already. But he still delivered it all like an absolute pro for our enjoyment.

What are the odds norm warms up the crowd to carrot top in his own segment... Unless he had seen her interview the night before and heard her mention she's in a movie with carrot top. This whole theory has blown my mind. At first I didn't like it because it took away a bit of the magic for me, but now I almost appreciate it more.
Norm created this image of being sloppy and improvised in his delivery, but in reality he worked incredibly hard. He was a genius.

Because I didn’t know what I was going to say [on the show]. I was like, Good, Norm, you take over.”
