    I watched this video hoping for a detailed demonstration of installing the bath overflow because it's alignment is critical after the tub is in place. You provided a little explanation about accessing it between the tub and the wall and the importance of dry fitting it.....then, suddenly it was done with the cover on. Do you show more detail about installing and sealing the overflow in another video?

    Hello Jeff.
    Got an idea for a video. Here's the situation: We're an older couple and my wife doesn't like stepping over the edge of the tub every day. So, my next honey-do assignment is to install a shower. Removing the old tub is "easy" and 60"x30" Shower Pans are at Lowes and HomeDepot. Installing the new shower drain to the old tub drain? Existing piping is probably metal pipe with no access under the new shower pan when it's in place. Plan? ...dry fit, measure, then wander around the plumbing isle and see if I can piece the 2 together.
    If you ever make this video I'd enjoy watching it, with my fingers crossed hoping not to see a mistake I made. Installing the shower soon.

Your video seems to show a work around by just cutting the pvc, adjusting the lengths, and then adding the overflow after by just reaching behind the installed tub . Am I correct that's what I'm looking at?

    I do this for a living so listen real quick. You don't sand down PVC ends with sandpaper... You sand down copper ends prior to soldering to remove the oxidized layer prior to adding the flux, their is a purpose to sanding copper. sanding PVC is completely unnecessary and if done wrong can cause gouges and ricks of leaks. The PVC primer if applied correctly breaks down the PVC surface prior to adding the PVC glue. You want to to keep applying primer until you start to feel the dobber grip the pipe as you go around the end applying primer, that indicated the PVC is getting soft enough. you can feel the difference between when you first starting to apply the primer vs after you applied it for 30 seconds. If you do it this way you'll never worry about a leak. Don't sand the end, instead REAM the ends with a reamer (OD and ID). then apply primer and then glue. don't skip the primer and don't skip the glue. IF you plan do something, do it right.

      Hi there Scott, You seem to know what you are talking about. I am doing a walk in shower in my home. I removed the old tub and the black pipe for the over flow and drain is exactly as this one in the video. I already cut just underneath the drain pipe where it meets the overflow so I'm left with the straight pipe right on top of pea trap going up about 6" but that's to high for the new drain. My question is how many inches does a pea trap have to have to work properly? Can I put a 45" elbow right on top of pea? Cause that will drop my new drain to where it is flush with the sub floor. Thanks in advance and your expertise can be used as I'm not to sure and need to finish this soon. Thanks

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 3 роки тому

      One thing to note when joining copper pipe regarding sanding before making a connection. Never sand copper pipe if it's going to be joined with a push type fitting like Shark-Bite. Be meticulous about deburring the inside and outside edges to protect the rubber seal inside a push-in fitting. It looks like Jeff was working with black ABS pipe and fittings, not PVC.

      Make your measurements for where the pipe outflow should be, cut the drain pipes then dry fit them AND then dry fit the tub. Examine how they line up, adjust as necessary, pull tub back and glue pipes at final measurements in place

    • @chrisgraham2904

      There are bathtub drain kits with a flexible overflow tube. They have a corrugated section about 4 inches long just below the overflow inlet that allows you to adjust about an inch in any direction to line up with the target overflow hole on the tub. More commonly made of brass. They are a "problem solver" type of product, so they can be much more expensive comparatively. Depending on quality and material, I've seen them run between $80 to $250 for the full assembly. If the Big Box stores don't have them, find a specialty plumbing store that serves mainly the trades.

    While I can appreciate the attempt to share your technique with the web, one practice shown in the video is unnecessary, and another is plain wrong. First, I've never seen a Journeyman plumber sand ABS like we would copper unless to remove some smeared cement that might have gotten on the end or to remove a stubborn burr. Sanding ABS is unnecessary because the joint doesn't need a rough surface like solder--the cement melts the surface just fine, rough or smooth. Sanding won't hurt, but it's a waste of time and sandpaper.
    The more problematic issue in the video is how the person cemented the joint. He only applied cement to the sockets and not to the male ends, which is a major mistake. That process wouldn't pass inspection on any job I've worked. Those joints are too dry and far less structural than they should be. He should have applied a coat to the socket first and then a heavier coat to the pipe for a properly cemented joint. If jobsite experience doesn't teach someone that, just read the cement's instructions which explains it.

      ya that dude is kind of a douche like u said everything needs to adhere and no matter what you do things can not adhere properly to a smooth surface. A lot of people dont sand their walls to remove the gloss before repainting a room either this leads to paint peeling and things of that nature because paint can not adhere to the smooth surface.....this rule applies to everything adhesive related

      no need for name calling. Often times in trade circles there are different views and applications. Thomas has a legitimate point. It does clearly say to clean the end of the pipe and fittings. I just choose to do it with sandcloth so that I have a habit of always removing burrs and dirt.

      I need to comment and agree with this post in case another DIY'er like myself uses this as their sole source of information. The cements instructions clearly state how to use it and no where does it recommend sanding. It DOES state to coat both male and female connections. Ottowa, I greatly appreciate your video though. The tips on pipe flexibility one way but not the other are great.

    This guy, lol wrong glue, shark bites, pex to the shower head. Which means its going to siphon and drip from the shower head. You are taking shortcuts and using old material. He at least used putty.

    • @chrisgraham2904
      @chrisgraham2904 3 роки тому

      The shower valve's drop to the tub spout should always be soldered copper, but PEX hot and cold lines and PEX to the shower head is fine, common and within code. How is a siphon action more prevalent for a PEX pipe instead of a copper pipe? Siphon action is not involved. Moen recommends that their single shower valves should not be installed more than 11 inches above the tub spout to prevent pressure from directing water up to and out the shower spout when the tub is filling. Because most people now shower far more often than they bathe, people don't like the control valve that low on the wall and prefer the valve at naval height. This is what causes the shower to drip. For most installations the higher valve position is not an issue, unless the household has quite high water pressure.
