Clearly, from an engineering perspective, I don't understand. So, cutting the pipe, then allowed it to be straight under the tub? Nicely done, for always making sure your work is done to perfection.
There is a problem with the wrong drain and T-piece. Installed not at a right angle, not exactly horizontal to the bottom of the tub. When I insert the pipe all the way, it stays at an angle down. Corner gap. I show it in two lines at 3:06. There is no way to push it up. 4:11 I show a full tube inserted and little movement. 4:15 insert only a 1/4" length and the pipe moves up and down about half an inch. So, from the required installation position (nut line 4:24) I need to cut the pipe and live only 1/4" to the nut line. In this way, I was able to move the flange up, so that the joint was equal to the straight surface of the bottom of the tub at 5:26.
Omg Ty so so much 🎉 this is my Situation right now and family member is coming over to fix this issue and now I can show them this video. It will make the task much simpler now .

To find the leak, you need underneath open selling. Open the ceiling and poor the water in the tub and watch where they leak. Any way, you need to replace or fix from under tub. So open and check with water.
I use putty only on the garbage disposal flanges in the sink. Tub / shower I use sealant only or marine silicone. At 6:10 I'm showing the clear sealer instead of putty use.

I have leaky pipes under my tub but nothing uncrews anymore because it's been corroding since 1965. I like the idea of cutting away the pipes and pipe nuts. I'm gonna try finding a metal cutting blade for my reciprocating demo saw. I'm a little worried because I don't have access to behind the overflow, only from the bottom. If you take the plate off the overflow is there anything else holding it to the tub?

I'm not a plumber so this is a genuine question because I am going to be replacing my parents drain this weekend, but wouldn't you want to fill the tub to see if there is a leak from below? also is there any way to tell if there is a leak without having access from underneath?
Can I just buy that drain pipe, or do I have to buy the whole kit? The bathtub was replaced last year & it's leaking around that seal into the basement. Or can I just try to seal it from the basement?
Very helpful video but I have a crawl space. Would it be easier for me to open the wall behind the tub or better to do this from below in crawl space? I would have to cut open a hole in the wall in my kitchen area.
Not sure I love the clear sealer on the topside between the drain and the tub. Seems like it would be a pain for homeowner or the next guy to unscrew the drain if they were going to change it out or do some maintenance on it.
Agreed. I would apply sealant to the outer parts. This will be able to prevent possible leaking and will be easier for the next guy to remove stuffs. What is the reason not using plumber putty?
Thank you for sharing!! This is exactly!! what I need done. Question: Can I just un screw things instead of cutting? And, no plumbing putty? Basically any sealer will do? Are most tub drain holes standard? Once again, thank you! The perfect video! Jim.
If yours not stuck-try to unscrew. Mostly I used putty if pipes has all the sides movement options. But this one was not straight and no way to play up/down/back/forth. Thats why I chose sealant.
Thank you for your timely reply. ❤ This tub, drain is very old. Some ppl use pliers and such to try to remove basket. I may have to buy a tool. Or cut like you did.
Ty! This video has been very!! helpful! I need your expertise. I'm dry fitting new in. The rubber gasket under is gapped on back maybe one sixteenth of inch. I have about quarter inch going into waste. Am I good? Will clear sealer and plumber putty do the job once I tighten it all up? Blessings my friend. Jim

Only thing I don’t understand is why you didn’t turn the faucet on all the way to check the flow. I replaced my drain and overflow, no leaks but the water barely drains out of the tub. I have no clue why or what I did wrong
May be because I trust to myself 26 years of experience. That's why no need extra test. The overflow valve has adjustable regulator inside. Probably you need to drop down a little more.
As a real service plumber, I can’t grasp why you didn’t just replace the entire waste and overflow so it could be done properly. You shouldn’t need to apply silicone caulk “just in case” because there is no “just in case” when it is done properly. You had so much access. There’s just no excuse for half-assing this.
You are actually right. But some owners want to replace only what they see and not spend more of my time fixing potential hidden problems that are invisible to the eye.
I hear ya @fixitall it's super frustrating sometimes for me to have the pressure to do things proper and my best when a client isn't willing to pay for that, add the pressure to make $ and I do what I'm paid to do but inform clients on what I believe should be done.
Putty is good where all joints fit snugly and evenly. There was a misalignment of the pipes, so I used a sealant. Sealant gives me 1000% leakage will never happen.
I completely see why the entire overflow was not replaced due to trim not matching. However it's best since you are down there to just replace the whole overflow not just the shoe. Why did your set come with such crappy flimsy brass nuts? I've used brass overflows before and the brass nuts are way better than the one you showed.
You're right, never use silicone in this place. That's why this is not a silicone. This is a special waterproof sealer, works even underwater and stay soft and sticky to surface after years. It's much better than drying out plumbers putty, which can cracks and lost surface contact.
It will leak again, in 20 years. The repair did not lower the existing vertically-mounted TEE, to make the new horizontal brass drain pitch FAVORABLY, instead of UNFAVORABLY. The reason the old drain leaked was because it could never drain completely and dry out, after every use. Furthermore, the plumber didn't polish the bottom of the tub's drain hold (iron) where foreign material remained. He simply buried that dirt in silicone adhesive, pinching it with the new fixture.
@@noelrodriguez9956 You right, it shorter than should be in straight inserts. Same short was old piece. Why? Just because the "T" elbow in the wall was installed not in perfect horizontal position and it wont let me insert new pipe more than I saw in old one, that's why I cut it shorter and insert a little to be able lift it up to the tub surface. When I insert lond side it look to much down from the tub hole and no way to tight it up.
At 3:00 I was inserted as much as I usually do (about 1" insert), and as you can see at 3:04 the flange can't touch the tub. So only when I cat shorter I was able to lift it up. I was explained this situation with different line angles at 4:10
I'm not gonna bash him, especially when he's working in his own house.... Obviously, a plumber would do it differently. However, he achieved the same result and saved a few hundred at the same time....
Yes, I can open the wall, redo whole piping, but, who going to pay for it? So, I'm done the minimum to kept house in good working conditions for the next 40 years.
The flange under the bathtub does not fit tightly, it is skewed. Therefore, it is best to use something that does not harden, like Plumber's Putty after years. The bathtub can sag when you walk in it, and it is necessary that the sealant also takes the shape of the bathtub.
Plumber putty not useful in places where rubber gasket presents. Need sealer. No one use putty in places with gasket in the mechanical devices, motors, engines - sealer /silicone only.
Давно ещё скачал с Ютуба этот сборник. Увы, на саму музыку нет названия у меня. Этот сборник в Ютубе просто назывался luxury music, однако таких названий там сотни и сложно найти будет.

Also, the tub shoe that you cut was too short. It's supposed to go home fit all the way inside of the overflow. T and you didn't put hardly no putty on the shoe itself. The spud but I don't live there
You absolutely right. But overflow pipe and T was previously installed incorrectly, and no way to insert new elbow all the way. That's why it is not flush with tub and I have to do it in different way.
Nice video, but viewers shouldn't compromise their wood framing unnecessarily with giant cutouts. This is why carpenters hate mechanical contractors equipped with a Sawzall.
I hope my sealer around the new flange will keep water out. If I paint it, I can't install in the same day. I need to come back in next day. No one want it.
My builder wanted to cut a hole in my ceiling to repair the tube drain that was upstairs. I wouldn't let them. I repaired it drain myself from up above. No holes in my ceiling.
I replaced the whole assembly. The overflow was leaking. A local plumbing company gave me an estimate of over $1000 to do the repair. I did it myself for the cost of parts which was less than $75. WTF!!! I used the same brand but used the one with toe popper.
This happened to my upstairs neighbor’s tub. The leak ruined my bathroom, which costed $16k to repair. I put some water detectors below her drain and an access panel in my ceiling in case it happens again.
Should have been replaced with a professional grade 17 or 20 gauge and completely replaced, not just the tub shoe. The alignment problem would have been fixed if everything was properly replaced. Sorry DIY hack/ short cut.
Absolutely agree with you. But, the owner's choice, was replaced the piece with hole only. No one want to pay 5 times more for the whole drainage system, if it still works well.
I was used special all the time soft sealer. Thank you very much. So helpful and details oriented
I'm not a plumber so this is a genuine question because I am going to be replacing my parents drain this weekend, but wouldn't you want to fill the tub to see if there is a leak from below? also is there any way to tell if there is a leak without having access from underneath?
There is no way to check under the bathroom if there is no access there.

How to Remove & Fix Bath Tub drain
ua-cam.com/video/LqgmB__lyXI/v-deo.htmlsi=9pJVqAjbMiUIXymO
Can I just buy that drain pipe, or do I have to buy the whole kit? The bathtub was replaced last year & it's leaking around that seal into the basement. Or can I just try to seal it from the basement?
Just disassemble, and assembly with new sealant.
Thanks this video helped me
I'm glad it helped!
Really excellent video. Helped me out alot.
Awesome, thank you!
Very helpful video but I have a crawl space. Would it be easier for me to open the wall behind the tub or better to do this from below in crawl space? I would have to cut open a hole in the wall in my kitchen area.
Opening the wall not helping you.
All pipe work in your situation must be done in crawl space.
Excellent! Tutorial! Thank You! Sooo! Much!

How often will be changing.. it's happening to my house too
This house was built in the 1970s, so ones in 50 years.
@@FixitAll ahh yeah i see
Not sure I love the clear sealer on the topside between the drain and the tub. Seems like it would be a pain for homeowner or the next guy to unscrew the drain if they were going to change it out or do some maintenance on it.
That stuff all the time soft, should be not to hard removing
Got that right……
Agreed. I would apply sealant to the outer parts. This will be able to prevent possible leaking and will be easier for the next guy to remove stuffs. What is the reason not using plumber putty?
such an awesome work and video.
Thank you very much!

@@FixitAll figured it out shortly after I wrote this comment but yea the overflow was causing an air lock inside the p trap.
@FixitAll As a plumber, you need to educate them and tell it is better to fix it correctly the first time or you'll come back to fix it again.
I hear ya @fixitall it's super frustrating sometimes for me to have the pressure to do things proper and my best when a client isn't willing to pay for that, add the pressure to make $ and I do what I'm paid to do but inform clients on what I believe should be done.
@@Bekindallways Thank you!
My thoughts exactly. Glad I’m not the only one to think this while watching. Hard to watch how it ended
Why u don’t use putty? And I wonder to know if u don’t use sealant what could be happened?
Putty is good where all joints fit snugly and evenly. There was a misalignment of the pipes, so I used a sealant. Sealant gives me 1000% leakage will never happen.
I completely see why the entire overflow was not replaced due to trim not matching. However it's best since you are down there to just replace the whole overflow not just the shoe. Why did your set come with such crappy flimsy brass nuts? I've used brass overflows before and the brass nuts are way better than the one you showed.
Just replace what the owner ask and with factory set.
Is this still holding up?
@@myb7922 Of course. Why not?
It will stay next 25 years.
@@FixitAllbecause the other people were saying it wouldn't last.
@@myb7922 I'm 25 years in this business. So I trust to myself more, than to some UA-cam comments.
Where you cutting inter into the tub
What you mean?
shortening that pipe trick might save me from throwing in the towel one day and calling a plumber or doing it myself.
Is this drain line made of brass or copper? How old is it
Brass. Copper red color and soft metal.
About 30-40 years old .
How much does a job like this usually cost
From $500 to $2000 + materials.
Is plumbers putty not going to work?
Putty good if the parts fit tight. If there are any gaps and not straight connection, better use non-dry all time flexible sealant.
Never used silicone because it needs curing time, I always use putty. But if it works who am I to say its wrong??
You're right, never use silicone in this place. That's why this is not a silicone. This is a special waterproof sealer, works even underwater and stay soft and sticky to surface after years. It's much better than drying out plumbers putty, which can cracks and lost surface contact.
From other user of this sealant - "That Lexol sealant is the best. I use it all the time - best ever and lasts 50 years. Nice job!"
Probably you right. Thanks!
That little pipe is a little bit short, you should to measure the correct size to avoid any leaks.
I was explained this situation with different line angles at 4:10
What if our pipe doesn’t align as straight as it should be. What do we do?
I can't answer if i cant see it.
Would you explain to me how you can do it better for the same time and less money? I am curious.
Did it leak?
Yes, hole at the first second of the video
Thank you !

Para qué? Qué razón hay en este trabajo?
Wonder why Plumber's Putty wasn't used?
The flange under the bathtub does not fit tightly, it is skewed. Therefore, it is best to use something that does not harden, like Plumber's Putty after years. The bathtub can sag when you walk in it, and it is necessary that the sealant also takes the shape of the bathtub.
@@FixitAll Many thanks for your kind reply. I greatly appreciate your explanation.
You welcome! Thanks for watching my channel!

Hey, there seems an adjust ment to move the drain pipe down
I do not want to touch anything extra to make my work several times longer.
If the drain is pvc then do you recommend using plumber putting or the clear sealer in this video?
Plumber putty not useful in places where rubber gasket presents. Need sealer. No one use putty in places with gasket in the mechanical devices, motors, engines - sealer /silicone only.
Thank you sir.
Bonjour super mais vous auriez du pencer l,emplacement du siphon
le siphon (u-genou) est situé dans le mur vertical gauche, tout va bien là-bas.
I think you cut too much ? I live in earth quake zone. A good shack might disconnect that small amount of brass in that connection .
Shorter than standard, but I can’t lift it higher to the bathtub if it’s 1/4 longer. The siphon pipe was previously installed at the wrong angle.
Здорово!

BTW - putty the old school staff. We have more flexible and no drying out hermetic in ours day.
Is that maybe why a leak come out onto the floor at the corner floor of the tub?
Have no idea how it was founded. The owner was open the ceiling by himself, before my visit.
Nice video, but viewers shouldn't compromise their wood framing unnecessarily with giant cutouts. This is why carpenters hate mechanical contractors equipped with a Sawzall.
you forgot to clean the bottom of the tub with a sandpaper and then paint for rust prevention
I hope my sealer around the new flange will keep water out. If I paint it, I can't install in the same day. I need to come back in next day. No one want it.
@@FixitAll Agree !! Coming back next day is bad ..but i would have sanded it smooth and spread silicon all over which would also prevent rust
you cut the pipe an inch short I hope wont leak in future . we use plumber putty not slicon .

That's depend on what to do.
From above, you can replace the gasket, but nothing else.

Wow! I hope insurance covered your repairs.
@@FixitAll yes fortunately, my insurance covered it.
