yeah we didn't talk about that this time, but we mentioned the parallels before yeah. I forgot Thors gave that guy CPR as well This series is next level.
the monologue about god was not from Thorfinn, but rather from him remembering what Canute said back in S1 Ep 20 right before him, Askeladd, and Thorfinn were about to meet King Sweyn.
I feel like this is an unpopular opinion but this gotta be my favorite anime/manga ever only Berserk comes close and maybe AOT but damn Vinland Saga just holds so much value to me as a person still growing and coming into their own.
Yeah honestly, I'm getting there myself. I used to hold berserk to an untouchable standard, but this is the first series since AoT that I've felt that level of quality and creative vision. The thing all three of those have in common is that the author has a clear message and vision for their story that persists throughout the whole thing, and all that is alongside the consistently stellar level of visual and narrative quality. The dialogue, art, character depth and dynamism, everything is just at such an unimpeachable level. I always used to think of this series as something that people were trying to enjoy like they enjoyed berserk when they read it for the first time. Like it was clearly very good, but its more that people wanted to relive their berserk experience with a newer violent, emotional fantasy manga. But now I'm starting to see there's clearly more to it than just that.
The difference between vinland and those other series, is Vinland is mostly real. These things actually happened and are still happening. Berserk and AOT touch upon the horrors of war violence, but they just arent grounded. For me, that gives vinland a lot more weight. Its great to use fantasy to explore humanity, but its another thing to actually use history to explore humanity. The writing hits harder when the plot doesnt rely on fantastical fantasy explanations. World building a different world is great and all, but now theres a disconnect between us and the setting, its not our world, not our society, not our history, not our rules, especially with magic or sci/fy forces influences that do not occur in our world. And also most manga/anime still tragically fall into "might makes right but luckily our protaganist is the mightiest and the moraly rightiest!" Where its ok to cheer for violence because its the right violence against the right people. And to be fair, might makes right is the rule of the world. But at least portray such a system as the barbarism it is.
@@nullakjg767 I can agree in that the setting and realistic history of said series can definitely help but I also won’t down play series that have fantasy and want to explore those types of worlds, not saying you are ofc, but I think what makes Vinland Saga stand out doesn’t only lie in its choice of realistic setting but the themes and messages they choose to convey to the viewer and that correlates well to fiction that has fantasy settings in them as well. The problem is when they rely on that fantasy aspect to shape their character so much so that it disconnects the viewer from relating to their struggles. I think that is why Berserk does it so well, and why Guts is incredible because no matter how much power he has, he is still human with very real emotions and struggles. That relates to how I feel for the characters in Vinland Saga as the author makes it clear that even in a world filled with violence anger and hate, our main cast is always trying to find the hope in it all and a way to escape those problems rather than fuel it. Either way I think it’s how they deal with their respective worlds and how they choose to handle the characters in them as still being very human.
Vinland Saga definitely feels like it does more than tell a story and leaves so much for the people reading it to grow from as it does for the characters in it.

(Before Canute/Askeladd/Thorfinn met with Sweyn for the first time.) It was at that exact moment Canute, showing anger towards God, dicided to create Heaven on earth by himself, his utopia. And now, Thorfinn reflects on these same words, not with anger, but with determination like you said. THE PARALLELS
The God must be watching us section was the speech Canute gave in season 1 when he made his revelation about love and made the change, so Thorfinn thinking on it in this episode is also him thinking back on what he knows about what Canute is trying to do and deciding he thinks he can reach him because they both in theory have the same end goal of a peaceful world, even if the methods may vary.
The god part was said by Canute in the first season when he decided to go against god, thorfinn remembered that and decided to go and have a talk with Canute about this war he’s causing.
Wanted so much for Thorfinn to get his speech to Arnheid while she was able to hear it. Really like the contrast between her and Einar, where Einar kept living despite losing everything, later finding more reasons to live compared to Arnheid deciding there was nothing left for her.

So glad i looked one last time to see if this was up before I went to bed. Great reaction! I didn't cry watching Arnheid's death when I watched the episode, but I did cry along with Lindsay this time. 😢
Arnheid death isn’t only a question to thorfin, but to us. Even after hundred of years in the future. Can we really promise a place for arnheid where people don’t fight among themselves. I like to relate vinland saga with the philosophy of absurdism. However absurd life is, the correct way is to rebel by living against all this absurdity. No matter how impossible and absurd vinland is, we still need to strive for it. Imagine sisyphus happy.
Wanted to add, I think they also drew comparisons with Arnheid to Christ (an innocent victim) when Thorfinn takes up her head and gives his "Vinland" speech to her. It looks different, but it reminded me of how Christ is cradled by Mary in the very famous statue: La Pieta.
Sad thing is that Arnheid couldn’t possible survive the beating anyways (even if she would have healed from her wounds). There was a dead child inside her. In a situation like this a healthy body would have pushed that child out but she was way too injured for that. And at that time no surgery to remove the child existed. So with a dead body inside her she would have gotten blood poisoning.

Vinland saga is all about the long game, there is no rush but it all ties together nicely and the slow burn makes the reward when we reach so much more full filling that if we rushed to get to that point. I feel bad for anyone who dropped this series because of lack of action, the setting on the farm, Thorfinn's character change, etc. They're missing out on one of my favorite arcs in manga being adapted beautifully every single week.
I mean, this season is weaker than the first one in many aspects. The religious parts were much better, so were the main characters. The one good thing is that Thorfinn is not a typical 2D anime protagonist anymore.
I feel like they really missed the chance to show more of snake in the battle. Would’ve loved to see his leadership skills and ability to keep as many ppl alive even just for a couple more minutes. Other than that great episode. Great reaction 👍
The most devastating thing here to notice is that Arnheid died with those last words "What point is there in going on living" meaning the world was so cruel and unfair to her that it took away everything that mattered to her. Her home, her son, her husband, her unborn child and a 2nd chance to start fresh on the farm. The violence from war and slavery caused Arnheid so much suffering that it resolved her to saying these words at the very end. And perhaps what's more sad she dies without hearing Thorfinn's hopeful answer which is that he will create the very world that Arnheid always wished to see with no violence, war, pain and slavery in Vinland. I feel bad for all 3 of them. Arnheid, Einar and Thorfinn.
I think thorgil actually ran away because he knew that the rest of the men coming after him are strong and are the same level as himself. So having to fight many of ppl that are the same level as him he would had lost
I don’t understand why Thorgil would run away. Up until now, they built up his character as someone who enjoys fighting, even if it’s someone stronger than him, like the King. The premise of the show is not to glorify war but show the real side of war, which is misery. However, shying away from realistic portrayal of characters in the show is not very good. Thorgil should’ve died there, on the beach, taking as many men with him as possible. His frustration for not being able to kill Canute should’ve made him even more angry and bloodthirsty. However, when faced with life and death, he chose life.

@@jamesjaya6744 Yeah, that was really hamfisted and completely out of nowhere as well. She was a fighter and then just gives up because plot convenience calls for it. The resolve is already powerful enough, they could've used Pater's death to motivate Thorfinn since he's a character without longevity not Arnheid.
@@anitaremenarova6662 I guess we have to agree to disagree then. We don't actually know much about pater's past. So again the resolve will not feel as powerful. I don't think it is hamfisted. Thorfin already talk about it since like episode 15 that he would feel ashamed if Arnheid know he used to be a warrior. Arnheid is a representation of thorfin guilt. He sees first hand what tragedy he might cause during his year with askelad through Arnheid. Unlike how Einar lost his family, thorfinn see directly how Arnheid lost his baby and her husband and eventually her life. I am not saying vinland is perfect. In fact, I kinda think the conversation between Thorfin and einar in this episode, where 'anger begets more anger' kinda unnecesarry, since Einar already probably knew it. Yeah but her death pose a real question to thorfin. Where in this world where there is no war and slavery? Not only that but to us, a hundred years in the future? Is there really a place where people don’t fight among themselves. If she continue on living, the resolve for finding vinland will not be as powerful.
I think it would be better if Thorfin just punch him and stand silently and let him cry.
