Olmar did actually end up becoming a warrior in the end. A true one. Olmar's character development is respectable, knowing your limits is also a strength.
King
well no, he didnt become one. he began to think like one. being a true warrior isnt about just knowing NOT to fight. its also understanding that violence is necessary to protect urself and others but ONLY as a last resort. Olmar isnt capable of doing that.
Having the strength and holding it back until necessary vs. having no strength to hold back are two different things.
With that said, he still made his 1st good decision since he appeared. It's not borne out of courage, but out of fear.
His speech, I think, was meant to be a springboard for what happens in the scene w/ Thorfinn.
Olmar acknowledging your weakness, growing some spine, who knows, maybe he actually becomes a well developed character with some hidden talent or potential of his own.
(p.s. pls don't reply with spoilers on his future development)
@@markmywords3817 True, again, a slave is made virtuous not because of virtue but because he can do naught else, a man is made virtuous because he has the strength but keeps it only for the most dire of circumstances.
we all think we are like Thorfinn, but in reality we are all just Olmar
And some are Thorgil. You never know which you are until you get into a life-threatening situation against other people.
Bro, who the hegg thinks he's a Thorfinn. Lmao.
Thorfun he nice man ❤
@@petrorlov2599 l like Torgi he in deamn time 😈
You got itmixed up, its more like people think they would be like thorgil when in reality they would be like olmar.
I actually love Olmar’s character arc so much. Also, I don’t like Thorgill, but I do “enjoy” him just like I also “enjoy” Dio from Jojo’s.
i "have no enemies" coming soon
Exactly.
@@KaldyrDGreat in next episode
Thorgil is such a "chad" meme:
>shows up
>beats up a kid
>gets in a fight with the king's guard
>tries to assassinate canute
>swims away
>when they decide to surrender he says " see ya cowards"
>leaves
@@shortznig2938 yes l like him
When Thorgil ran off in the manga we actually got an info card that said he was never seen or heard of again. He just disappeared into the distance to be a warrior somewhere, probably got killed. Through his violent path, he left no legacy.
He badass
That's still gonna happen, different scene, it's in the epilogue of the arc
Why are you spoiling things from future chapters/episodes?
Spoilers:
Your spoiler is partially incomplete/wrong because we see him going to the beach where the battle took place only to find that Canute and the rest have left and then a bit later we see him leaving the farm and going somewhere.
To think that Thorfinn is no longer a slave to Ketil's farm but is still willing to talk with Canute to leave the farm alone and thus avoid more unnecessary deaths just using his words and no using violence. His father would be proud of him.
For thorfinn, slave life was a huge step up from murder hobo. Einar, not so much lol.
I feel sad for the woman 😢rest in peace
I like that the Old Master said Ketil only had to lose his farm for his son to become a man. It's a nice recognition given how Thorgil is this time's version of what a man should be, but the Old Master realizes the truth and is happy the heir to the family name is actually going to be the type of man who doesn't adhere to this distorted sense of "honor" and "courage."
Names with Thor in them were pretty common, it's also been about 15 years since Thors actually died and around 30 (I think) years since he faked his death. So people like Floki and Thorkell are the only ones who probably still think about Thors.
I think Thors is a pretty common name in Vinland so people don't really associate Thorfinn with Thors "Troll of Jom". Besides, Thorfinn's a lot shorter compared to Thors, we haven't seen any other strong Vikings with a short stature.
That and it's been 15 years since Thors died. And probably another 10 before that since he left the Jomsvikings. There are definitely people that would know of him. But it's getting to the point where the average Jomsviking warrior is probably too young to have met Thors. The commanders are probably in their 30-50s. But the bulk of the fighters are probably in their 20s-30s. Most of them were probably literal children when Thors was last in the unit.
Historical records were spotty at best that time. Unless you were a royalty or otherwise nobility you were probably forgotten by the time the last person who met you died. No matter how great a deed you did, nobody is keeping a good record of it if you aren't royalty.
But of of course as you said, Thor is a well established god in their culture. There are probably so many people with some variation of Thor in their name. Thors, Thorfinn, Thorgil. I mean, in his quest for Thorfinn, Leif straight up found another Thorfinn that even matches the general appearance description.
They're not in Vinland lol
@@YoCelKreSunt my bad, by Vinland, I meant the anime itself.
Thorfinn is also a common boy name. So go figure!
It's been 30 years since Thors was a warror so it's no wonder he isn't as well known among warriors anymore.
No wonder this episode is called "Courage". Olmar finally got the courage to say he can never be like his big brother Thorgil right to his face. He spoke out from both his heart and mind on how he felt on the whole "Norse warriors must fight and die proud" nonsense he was always fed with specially by his big brother. He's legitimately scared for his life after seeing how brutal a war or a battle really is. Plus he also saw the burden of killing a human being for the 1st time. He doesn't want to become a cold blooded warrior who experiences all these things. The decison Olmar made here was indeed courageous, smart and not cowardly at all. This was the 1st time Olmar admitted his faults and was honest with himself. No wonder the old master was right that despite Ketil losing his farm, his son Olmar turned into a proper man.
Yes, and Thorfinn had the courage to try and see Canute again after what had happened between them + the 100 warriors around him.
Ya know what I find hilariously ironic? The number of people who show contempt for Olmar as a character for being mentally and emotionally weak/cowardly (up to this point) but then don't have that same degree of contempt for Ketil, the father who Olmar basically became a mirror of and who is an actual FULL GROWN "man" who was even more mentally and emotionally weak and cowardly than his son was. I never got the white hot contempt for Olmar who was VERY OBVIOUSLY being set up for what is happening right now, it was clear as day that Olmar would develop and do the work that his POS father Ketil spent his whole life running from and that Ketil would be exposed for the POS that he is. I have also highly looked forward to this from Olmar as a character. Though I do think, due to his limited perspective and his own role in the events that happened that he is shouldering more of the responsibility than he actually bears. The main driving force and number 1 responsible party for all this death is 100% objectively Canute, after that I'd argue Ketil is next in line and then a fight for 3rd place between Olmar and Thorgil. Thankfully though he is looking at things more clearly and now acting in line with his actual values and who he wants to be which is great to see, surrender here is the correct move but little homie needs to get a tiny bit more proper perspective about his role here and how responsible he is.
What I find hilarious is that you think Ketil is a "POS" and a "man" in quotation marks. And for what? For begin a human of that particular time in history (even if fictional, you get my point) and thus not having the sophistication of a modern-day human. Which lead to him losing his temper when he felt betrayed to the core. Which... hell, even modern people go feral when the rug gets pulled from under them that hard.
Does this mean what he did in a fit of rage is right - eh. Not really.
Does it mean then that he is a "POS" - eh. Not really, either. Just human.
Canute hearing Thorfins name and seeing his expression gave me chills cant wait to see what will Thorfin do or say to Canute great episode and reaction.
Canute he badass too
After starting to read BERSERK at last now i can understand the 'pile them up' reference from you guys
Thorgil was a man of his time, the quintessential Viking man respected for his Viking values and who was brought up as such. He would fit like a glove with the rest of the Kings guards and Jomsvikings. In essence he is pretty much the same man as Bjorn, except that we got to see the other aspects of Bjorn’s personality through his relationship with Thorfinn and Askeladd.
Yes he man big cheatd
The reason ppl "like" Thorgil isnt much about him being a nice person. And most likely, in a real life scenario, nobody would actually like him or want to be close to someone like him. But he commands respect because hes strong/smart/capable and proves himself to be so. Its the same reason anyone would like characters like: Madara, Aizen, Thorkell, Kaido, King Bradley, Hisoka, Gilgamesh, Light, Lelouch, Akashi. These are either anti-heros or straight villains. They have terrible traits, usually do the worst kind of shit imaginable and most on the list are FAR worse than Thorgil in terms of damage done to others or being an asshole, and yet people love them. I know yall love Madara but he was planning to literally eradicate the human race while giving them a "final dream" until they starve to death. Lelouch, while being an anti-hero, got hundreds if not thousands of people killed with his schemes and plots and most of the time he doesnt even blink. All these things were done for the "better cause" in their minds but in the end, the result is that they got people killed. But they are respected and loved because they were strong or smart. Basically, being capable in a tv show tends to wash or blindside others to their worse traits. Thorgil's bad traits stand out alot more in Vinland Saga because the shows main theme is that ppl like Thorgil is bad. But we all love Thorkell whos mindset is the same as Thorgil. Fight and die as a warrior. Why is that? Maybe bcause Thorkell acts more childish and has less moments where we see him do bad stuff? Regardless, the point is that as much as some ppl want to deny it, power gains respect. Being capable gains respect. Being absolutely batshit crazy and having a strong conviction commands respect. It dont mean if its right or wrong. Plus its a tv show, if everyone only likes the "good" ppl then theres no such thing as a favorite villain then
Unless I'm slightly mistaken you had a slight confusion to hear Olmar was named the heir of the farm.
First of all, only men were considered so the wife isn't in the running. Ketil's father is too old to be the heir. And Thorgil can't be selected because of his job. Less than a week ago Thorgil was a member of the Kingsguard. Kingsguard are expected to renounce all claims of inheritance or family. Kingsguard are supposed to be loyal only to the King, so having anything else in their life is considered a conflict of interest.
Of course that's just theory. In practice the real people in Kingsguards are unlikely to truly be 100% committed especially when it would hurt their family to do so. When Canute became an enemy of his father, Thorgil decided to take up arms against the King he swore his life to.
Basically, a week ago Thorgil couldn't be named heir due to his job. And now a week later, Ketil hasn't had a chance to update his heir selection, so they just go with the last person he named. If Ketil was awake and could consciously think he might change it back to Thorgil right now, but unless he actually gets around to announcing it then Olmar is the head of the family in the event of Ketil being out of commision.
There's actually a trick, you have to turn your head as you take the blow
Their punishement was exile, meaning they were supposed to leave everything behind and leave the country (branded outlaw, if return they are free to be killed legally)
Ho shit that bad😢
People love Thorgil because he is simple and badass, nothing else lol. He talks shit, and walk the walk without taking shit from anyone. That kind of character is always beloved, he is probably my second favorite this season after Snake.
He's a scumbag who got lots of people killed fighting a fight they couldn't win just so he could have some fun.
@@Regenmacher175 yes that's what most people would say in the real world, in fiction it's always entertaining to see such characters....well entertaining for me and tons of other people.
@@Regenmacher175 so?🗿
@@Regenmacher175 there's nothing wrong with siding with the weaker side because there's actual glory in that, thorkell did that too in s1. Thorgil couldve actually gained far more pleasure If he fought for the king but he didn't, have you ever wondered about that? If thorgil was just an evil brute like how you're desperate painting him to be, he would've killed olmar right then and there for mocking his norse pride.
He in deamn time 😈
If the last time I saw Thorfinn he slashed at my face and tried to kill me, I wouldn't want to see him either, especially a couple hours after Thorgil showed up out of nowhere. Canute has no idea what kind of man he is, and has nothing to gain and everything to lose from allowing himself to be anywhere near this guy who, as far as he knows, is crazy violent and apparently holds grudges against people for his entire life.
9:52 he is good enjoyable character. Him being bad person doesn't meant he is noy likeble as a character. Its like Beatris in Harry Potter, horrible person, but fun to read/watch how she acts.
He badass to me not bad he I deamn time
28:00, well, as I think, in terms of bet, the vikings must to take Torfinn to Canute, if he wins, but Canute doesn’t necessarily have to talk with him
manga
Thorfinn did talk about repaying their kindness
Einar gets angry saying Ketil just killed Arnheid
he responds with forget the master I want to repay the kindness of the old master, snake, Pater
I prefer this because although the master was reasonable to them and they could earn their freedom ( still enslaved...)
he had just killed her so it felt off him including paying the master for his kindness in this episode
Yes your right here
Love Olmar's arc theres a similar type of character in Vagabond, that I like alot. Not the exact same character but there are some similarities.
Matahachi!
@@gdhchuno bingo
Thorgil is just a principled norse man. He values his honor, his family, hes loyal (until canute was disloyal to him) and follows societies rules/norms just like snake does. Hell gladly lay down his life for a cause greater than himself (which means his own glory in this context only because thats what norse culture demands of him) Hes technically the ideal norseman, and so is snake who just sat there and straight up said "ill do whatever im told" he never even tried to dissuade the ketils from fighting. He takes his duty seriously because he takes societies norms seriously. I do think thorgil is a likable character in a similar way that thorkell is. Its not that hes unpleasant or hateful, its just his values are skewed by a garbage society and its garbage norms.
I’ve been waiting for 2x22 for like 4 years
last time thorfinn met canute he slashed his face and Canute killed his dad. their interaction will be amazing
I can always count on you to catch that Griffith reference ❤
Canute actually touches his scar when he reminds of Thorfinn because it was him who made that scar, when he realized that Canute killed Askeladd
Best line on the all opera on the next episode🗿
Guys the title guys, you mistyped it
Thors died 15 years ago. And 15 years before that he quit fighting. So its been at least 30 years since Thors was a Viking. These soldiers are probably not even 30 years old. So Tors is before their time. They wouldn't know him unless someone told them about him
22:39 I think Canute was willing to do this initially, before they ran back to the farm. But after they had killed his Kingsguard and fought against him in the battle, they would have been Outlawed.
My respect for olmar 📈
Imagine if it was Guts instead of Thorfinn.
Ho boy
9:45
I disliked that take.
love him or hate him but saying that he's a dick is objectively wrong.
Thorgil is one of the few warriors in the series that actually care about his family and has a sense of brotherhood. maybe not emotionally attached but he still got the responsibility of the big brother. how many times has he cheered up Olmar already and had him by his side? Thorgil's warrior pride is what makes him want to get the dirtiest out of Olmar when Olmar doesn't seem like he wants to, but it's not really Thorgil's mistake cus he is used to battle and knows that Olmar "loves battle". Thorgil doesn't meet his family alot after joining Canute's forces hence why he has structured this fallacy about Olmar, if Olmar confessed before Canute's raid Thorgil won't lump him into all of this, hell! maybe Ketil would've been more rough on him. cus he's sick of hearing of how much Olmar "loves war".
the last scene where Thorgil got irritated and pushed Olmar was due to how sensitive the time was for Olmar to confess, cus Thorgil and Snake were ready to battle.
and if you question the difference between Snake and Thorgil's reactions, idk maybe cus one is 10 years older than the other🤯.
anyways the take really caught me off guard cus regardless if anyone liked Thorgil or not I thought everybody agreed that he's a good brother
Oh yeah, thorgil is literally only 24 years old. Lots of room for offscreen development. My headcannon is that just like musashi from vagabond, thorgil initially went on a journey to become the strongest warrior and ended up becoming a monk instead who finds inner peace.
He badass he his evi and cool too me
Does he really care about his family? When they disagreed with him, he abandoned them, including his mom, who was on his side, his unconscious dad, his grandfather, who couldn't walk, and Snake, who taught him how to fight. He cares more about fighting than anything.
What kind of care is giving up on someone once you disagree? Such a weak mentality from Thorgil.
He has none of those things. He is just prideful and a slave of the Norse ethos which supersedes the love for life and "loved" ones.
Unless you are a manga reader and it's detailed later. Then we can perceive Thorgil walking away as a sign of Norse pride, which is the opposite of courage.
@@novafounder I get your arguemnt thats why I said he isn't emotionally attached.
but let's be honest him staying with the family won't do them any favor unless you're expecting him to do physical works in the farm.
@@A7MDYOUNIS I am open to his character growth, if there's any, but if not, staying there would have been meaningful by showing support as the family's protector, at least until they are safe.
The argument is he has nothing going for him to make him likable, nothing worthy of feeling a sense of attachment. Other than him being cool cuz he is a violent skillful fighter.
I can't take the word shorty seriously anymore lmao
Netflix uses the word midget which i imagine vikings would use as an insult
manga
Einar talks to him before he leaves, Thorfinn only says he forgot something Einar knows that's not true
but I did like them including Leif trusing him and seeing he had changed
wish they had included to me is important that he is following his Dad but taking it a step further
he said to Einar it's not enough to have Vinalnd as a peacful place but let the rest burn
his Dad did the right thing and walk away and create a good place for his family but he did nothing to stop what was going on
probably didn't see that he could, which is fair enough
but Thorfinn wants to prevent things for getting worse if he can
yes that is shown here obviously
but I think it would have been important to include it
he's not just helping because they helped him and shown kindness
but creating somwhere safe for them isnt enough
not sure I've explained this well but I wish they had included that his reasons are beyond just whats happening at the farm
Being outlawed in a medieval context can be not too different from being executed. Having to move somewhere else means going to a place where you have no rights, nobody trusts you and often there's a language barrier.
I wonder where Drott the Bear Killer got his scar from 💀
*ANIME HISTORY ABOUT TO BE MADE NEXT EPISODE‼️*
Easy to "like" or more so "respect" Thorgil because he is grounded in who he is and what he believes. Yes I don't agree with his exact beliefs as they are foolish and moronic, however he is true to himself. By that same extension I respect Canute but I hate him as well because fuck all authoritarians, every single person who wants to rule or thinks it's a good idea to have humans ruling over other humans I disagree with to the bottom of my soul. Just a respect thing, I know where Thorgil is coming from and while I don't agree at least he is himself. Unlike some other trash, not just in this story but even in modern times hell ESPECIALLY in modern times lots of fakers and pretenders out there.
