Why Canute left. Canute realized that Thorfinn has the same aspiration - to bring salvation to the people who were abandoned by god. Thorfinn is taking the alternate path, one that will plug the holes in his own grand scheme of things. Canute was using violence only because he thought it was unavoidable to create the greater good. Now that he understood and appreciated what Thorfinn will do, he treats him like an ally. An ally who also builds paradise on earth and against the wishes of god. That was why he said this was the hardest negotiation that he had.

I've just watched this masterpiece. I'm a 32 year grown ass man. I've been watching anime since I've been a todler as my mom loved Dragon Ball, Candy Candy, Heidi. So I've seen everything.
It's been a decade or more since I started to watch less and less anime until a point where I only watch one or two new releases per year. And some years I don't if I think nothing its "worthy". I used to consume more indiscriminatelly but I also love other media like cinema and literature. If ones reads tons of books, watches tons of films and TV shows, at some point your tastebuds just gets more refined, which I'm aware sounds elitistic but its the damn truth.
And at level its difficult to watch most anime. Anime hasn't never been about quality to be honest. But as the industry has grown and as we live in the "algorithm era" the industry has been outputing TONS of garbage. Miyazaki once criticized the very worrisome trend of new authors of the industry to create based on the parody and self-referencing without living too much in the real world. And I've noticing this too and it coincides with the decadence of the content produced.
I won't delve too much into this as this is not the place. But I'm glad Vinland exists. As I loved that Heike Monogatari and Ousama Ranking in 2021 were released. And Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken in 2020. And I'm really grateful for the little gems that still gets green-lit nowadays. Very risky business wise, it's all done for the love of art honestly and fewer studios remain like that. They are eveything right now. Like a single candle in the middle of a winterstorm.
I was very critical of the attitudes and consumer behaviour of my generation, but I've only seen the same trends get worse with Gen Z, and I suppose its gonna be aggravated as time goes on. Bigger boobs, more stupid waifus, lots of epic senseless braindead fights for the sake of empty epicness, zero regard for consistency and internal logic withing the script. Isekais, harems and waifus everywhere. Asshole Creepy Main characters with weird ass conceptions about how the world and people work because the authors are the same way too, which is a sad state of affairs in Japan.
Well I'll stop myself from screaming at the clouds. But damn I still watch new anime for works like Vinland.
Flashy stuff like Kimetsu no Yaiba or Jujutsu Kaisen its just to pass the time. They are good entertainment but it's something I'll forget eventually while this story I will not. The former is the type of anime that serves as the perfect example of lost potential.
Anyways, this is the best anime reaction channel from what I know.

The feels I got from this episode were just amazing. Seeing just how much of a positive impact Thorfinn made on everyone he met on the farm from Olmar, Snake, Old Master, Pater and even on Canute, it's no wonder they all think of him as a one of a kind incredible man. The scene of Thorfinn and Einar by Arnheid's grave is one of the best scenes I've ever witnessed in any show given the deep context behind it. Also that special poem at the end of the episode was just beautiful. Perfect way to wrap up the farmland arc for every character we saw in S2.

I forgot it too when I first saw this because of how hard it hit, but if you watch the season again, it opens with the bible quote of "carve it". Its the perfect end cap for what they set up at the first moments of the season. These last few episodes are the most powerful moments in anime since the Berserk Eclipse back in the 90s. And this probably surpasses it because of how its ties 2 seasons of pain together to something truly hopeful.

This episode was so masterfully done. I love it. I'm a manga reader (read 200 chapters) and i can say that Mappa took some creative liberties into really carving the story that fits into a cinematic experience.
For example, they removed the part in the manga that shows thorfinn's face all swolen up. It was hilarious to see him talking to Olmar and Snake like that. Maybe they did that because that comedic scene wouldn't fit the dramatic tone of the episode. They also added that scene of thorfinn walking up the mountain. Pater's monlogue was also never part of the manga (but i like it). They also removed some lines in the manga which reveals Ketil missing Arnheid, and the guests complain why they had to work from now on. Thorgil's departure was also not explained. In the manga it was said he left the farm and was never seen again. Over-all despite all these changes and additional scenes, I love the episode. Truely peakland saga.

I mean Canute's still going to do this kind of stuff, just not as much, and he'll handle it better and find cleaner ways to do it. People will die, and suffer, unjustly or not. The England army thing was just his current problem because he needed much more money going forward and didn't want a bunch of tax raises, no standing force in England frees up a lot of that to put towards other things, like taking over more of the North Sea, and gathering more people under him, this isn't some happy love ending, he's got his plan and it's still happening, he just wants to make it mesh with Thorfinn's a little better out of respect for someone who feels the way he does.

While other shows are exciting and have great characters and stories, Vinland really gets to a deeper core of humanity and can change a life or mindset. Those shows make an impact to wider audiences but I feel like Vinland makes such an impact to individual levels.

"A true war are not coming from political matter, but it's coming from the fear and untrusting each other."

Canute wasn't really inspired by Thorfinn though. ? They simply met halfway. Canute is not abandoning his ways. The methods keeps the same. What happened now was that it seems there are more ways to reach peace, so he is gonna work together with Thorfinn, each in their own way and methods. Two different paths that reach the same place. Thats the name of the episode. Canute is not gonna become the ultimate pacifist like Thorffin. As he said, he gained an ally.
And Canute never oppressed the english people either...Come one guys you are better then that.

@@raec5426 he wasn't really inspired per say unless you're talking about the part where he acknowledges how someone like thorfinn was born from vikingkind, but that wasn't what factored into canute's decision to leave the farm. Vinland saga isn't a romance lmao he left because their goals aligned and them working towards their goal together worked perfectly with canute's desire to gain power as peacefully as possible.

    • @raec5426
      @raec5426 Рік тому +3

@Deadsec Thorfinn influenced Canute's decision making when Thorfinn really didn't convince him much through any arguments to change plans. Thorfinn was literally on the way out and Canute kept seeking interaction because he was interested enough to hear from Thorfinn instead of him just leaving.
He was inspired to some degree because Thorfinn gave him more hope as how he turned out despite viking lifestyle. Doesn't mean he changed his whole ideals but he eased up on the intensity of some of his methods (not being so paranoid about having so much control). Then he gained more respect by people as a leader instead of just ruling as much with fear tactics (like his father suggested).
Thorfinn was a light to him against the darkness of his father, as it is supported visually too in the episode. Not sure why you brought up romance to begin with though. lol

I believe absurdism is the essence of the show. The dream of Vinland and Thorfinn's pacifism seems absurd, and that's the point.
Human without any choice is thrown into an absurd situation called life. Instead of suicide, Camus argue that the correct way is to embrace and admit the absurd, but then rebel against it. Einar lost his family, his freedom. He was a slave. Living seems pointless, yet he hold his mother advice in his heart and continue on living. The best revenge against a hopeless life is to live with hope.
What I like about the show is that sometimes, the character seems to talk to us. When arnheid dies, she didn't only ask Thorfinn if there is a place without war, but to us in the future. Can we promise a place where there is no war? Thorfinn's ideal and the dream of vinland seems absurd, yet the author is telling us to seek it.
I see a lot of absurdist theme in Vinland Saga and when I discuss in reddit, I realize even Thorfinn's ideal is similar to Camus radical pacifism

My biggest complaint is that stuff feels alot more spelled out in the anime and less implied. Several episodes back in the anime Thorfinn flat out tells Leif that hes proud of his ancestors for running away from war. Meanwhile Thorfinn never says that to Leif in the manga. So it was very satisfying to go back to those first couple episodes and realize the parallel between Thorfinn saying he will run and how he reacted to Leif telling him about how his ancestors ran from war is season 1.
Shows his development perfectly, without holding the readers hand IMO.

I think for most people who watch anime don’t really take it so seriously or care about every detail all the time. For me all care about is if a series can hook me/ I can get invested into characters, story, or world, if that happens most of the time I will like/love a series. As long the ending is not god awful. And 90 percent of the time I use “peak” just casual and not taking seriously it’s just hype level for me personally but when it’s genuine awesome I then mean it. Getting arguments into anime takes fun out of watching a show for me just let me enjoy what I like. But yeah Vinland saga has been amazing

in my opinion fights are good because 1] they look good 2] its a turning point in a story. While the 2nd season brought a lot of quality and things to think about it also used like 16 episodes for plot/character development which is in my opinion too many. When for a character such as askeladd 1 episode of a backstory is enough its hard to argue that 16/24 episodes of backstory is justified because it doesnt really move the story forward. I enjoyed this season a lot and its the only anime I watch this season but I can imagine getting more in those 24 episodes

I'm voting for Vinland Saga season 2 to win anime of the year. It should have won in 2019. I hope it doesn't get robbed again. Unfortunatly popularity wins and not what's actually the best but if Cyberpunk won last anime awards beating AOT and Demon Slayer then I have hope Vinland Saga can pull through. This is year we had a lot of good shows. Oshino ko is also in the running but it's not quite there yet to win Anime of the year. Most of the peak stuff will happen in future seasons I'm sure it will win then. It definitly will win in one of the future Years but this year has got to be Vinland Saga's year. If a story so well written, beautful and emotionally impactful doesn't win that would be a crime. Demon Slayer this year was fun but it's not Anime of The Year material. It definity deserves best animation and best fight scene for sure. AOT won in 2021 deservingly but 1 movie in 2023 does not top a complete masterclass of a season by Vinland Saga. I hope people that only have watched popular anime like AOT, Demon Slayer, Oshi No Ko, My hero academia etc give Vinland Saga a chance and watch it. You got to be mature and patient to understand and appreciate how beautuful this story is. Don't be that type of person that wants action or something to happen every 5 minutes and can't sit through it to appreciate it's slow but steady beautiful journey. If you're that type of person then my only hope is that you will slowly change when you grow up in age because you're missing out on Peak fiction and storytelling by being a simple person like that and you will never evolve from that childish shell.

If you think about it, these thoughts have probably crossed real Thorfinn Karlseffni, if his homeland is so great and prosperous then why would he even explore and colonize Vinland? But then there's the eternal question of "Why even live?". This show is trying to justify human life, taking a humble approach of grief avoidance, it's painful to see your loved ones die, especially when they are in the abyss of Nihilism. Therefore, they must live.
