My husband requested that this recording to be played at his funeral. I complied. He was a Hell of a Man. Love to you always my beloved. Rest In Peace. 💗
Embarrassed to say this, but I'm from a generation after this time. I was listening to this wondering why there isn't more live footage. Of course that's why. RIP, but the music lives forever!
As with me I'm not sure how long before the crash but It was definitely before.. I saw them at Knebworth in 76 possibly August I can't really remember it was a full festival of bands with skynryd as second billing to the rolling stones.. You can watch the version of this from thst very concert on here on You Tube
It's anything but a guitar solo. It's a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist and THREE guitars. Sometimes it's a lead guitar and 2 rhythm guitars sometimes 2 leads and a single rhythm, and sometimes it's 3 lead guitars playing, sometimes in synch and sometimes in counter point. At least six musicians at the same time. It's an instrumental.
Funny you say that but don’t drill me I never really listen to John B in Zepp. Always locked on Page personally. Then like it’s crazy Zepp was just four master musicians! Point is your right lol
If you watch the concert video, when the solo starts, it's one playing the solo, one appears to be rythm and one appears counterpoint. Partway through, it's two separate solos going, and throughout the rest of the time sometimes they sync and sometimes they diverge (all while the third guitar is mostly playing rhythm, but does some other stuff from time-to-time). It's truly one of the sickest things I've seen, and to be honest, I never really knew much about 'Skynyrd before I saw that a couple of months ago (outside of the fact they were southern rock from the 70s), but that clip and the amazing way they played got me totally interested!
Yeah, I started laughing when, Amber said that. & was laughing even harder when the guitar solo's started up &, Jay's eyes nearly popped out of his head.
Stairway To Heaven always came out #1 on all the countdowns and that's a fact. Listen to both songs!!! Then compare. Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song about being free in America and there's no other song that brings out that kind of Pride, Emotion, and Obsession of being free period!!! Compare the music!!! Not even Stairway To Heaven can come close to the music arrangement that these guys came up with to adorn the greatest song ever written and composed!!! ( Better lyrics and better music) This song is second to none!!! 15:10 15:10 15:10
The rumor is that the guitar solo is still going on, somewhere deep in the south. Love the reaction. And I really dig Ambers take on the song "This IS my Free Bird." Kind of perfect.
I can confirm those rumors as actual fact… at any time in the south..during the summer…just roll your windows down or open the blinds and screens and just listen…fly high free bird…🔥💯🤘🇺🇸❤️
I got to tell you. I saw them in the seventies at the concert they made this song about 25 minutes long. Even the piano at a long solo. They were incredible
And isn't it awesome that we LIVED through undoubtedly the greatest era in Rock music? I've been blessed with greatness my whole life with music like this !
I played this for my dad (big old time country fan) and he started tapping his foot when the guitars took off... when it was done he looked over and said, "them boys can handle an ax". RIP Dad.
This has to be the most accurate description of what this solo is to the rock world. Just dudes ripping their guitars to its fullest. Ax slayers for sure lol
I"m a 67 year old grandma . This is my funeral song. Love LS best band of the 70's. Thank you for your reaction to this band.. This grandma still ROCKS to this band. RIP Love you guys ..Thanks Again
I'm a 62 year old Grandma who still rocks too the 70's music. My grown children even rock too Skynard, Clapton, Bob Segar, The Eagles, Pink Floyd etc etc. No denying that the 70's were the BEST DECADE OF MUSIC !!!!!!!
hiya grandma! you wanna know what my funeral song will be? "happy days are here again" or maybe "how much is that doggie in the window." or "always look on the bright side of life." there i just decided.
Losing this band was one of rocks saddest moments, but they left us with some iconic songs & Free Bird is up there true Southern Rock & the guitar is only the best head banging parts of this song. Love it The Singer Ronnie Van Zant once said about the song that everyone wants to be free & that a bird can fly wherever he wants to
No, No, No. We cannot pause in the middle of a guitar solo. Right when you can't take any more, it's because that's what the artist is going for. Hang with them. Feel the vibe and survive the ebbs and flows. Please.
At 5:25 in this video, when you guys said this song is really slow, I got a huge smile on my face thinking, if they only knew what was coming! One of the most epic Rock n Roll song of all time! 😊🎸
Me too! It’s so fun to watch their faces and reactions when we know what’s coming and they don’t. I stare intently waiting for that moment of delight in their faces when a high note or guitar solo or sax comes on.
Yes, this is one of rock's top masterpieces. It's kind of like "Free Bird" is America's rock masterpiece like "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zeppelin) is Britain's. I love seeing young people reacting to them and see their eyes getting bigger and bigger and being blown away. It's like listening to it for the first time again. Great reaction!
I think you are right. I remember in the 70's whenever a concert was ending, no matter who the group was, someone would hold up a lit higher and yell FreeBird.
The last remaining original member (Gary Rossington) just passed away a few weeks ago. My brother was born in '63. I was born in '70 and I can remember him playing Lynyrd Skynyrd constantly in the 70s. It was his favorite group. I remember crying at a young age when I saw the paper where their plane had crashed. Fly high Lynyrd Skynyrd! You're now free as a bird! This song always bring a tear to my eyes
L.S.!! LONG LIVE THE SOUTH! This was REAL music from the 70s and I remember when freebird was released... Took music to a whole new level! These where real musicians! Smoke a bowl and listen to freebird!
Back in March 2020, I played a gig out of town, in New Mexico. Our drummer wanted to have a family and friends party, and his brother is a guitar player, as am I. I'm not a big fan of "Free Bird", as it is a very taxing song to play, but the crowd insisted, and we played it. I've never seen a more "in to a song" audience ever. The song went on for what felt like an hour, my forearms were cramping, but people were jumping, screaming, and actually doing the "we're not worthy" genuflecting to us. A memory I will always carry with me.
I DID THE SAME LEE HANSON IN 1999! MY LAST LIVE GIG IN A BAND AND ALTHOUGH I HAD ANOTHER GUITARIST I PLAYED ALL THE LEADS "FOREVER" IT SEEMS, INCLUDING THE SLIDE AND THE CROWD WENT BESERK!!!! I WAS SOAKED WITH SWEAT AS WE PROBABLY PLAYED 25+ MINUTES! I THINK WE SHOULD PLAY IT STILL AS THAT'S WHAT THEY WANT AND THEY SURE HELP OUT THE TIP BUCKET!!!..HA!!! I JAMMED WITH ARTIMUS PYLE (THE DRUMMER) ONCE LOCALLY! WE CALLED IT "STAIRWAY TO FREEBIRD"!!!! HAAA!!....NOTE: I HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF SCREAMING BECAUSE I USE CAPITAL LETTERS! I'M NOT! MY EYESIGHT IS FAILING AND IT HELPS ME SEE BETTER AS I TYPE. TAKE CARE!
My mother actually went to school at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL and she knew the real Leonard Skinner. Now called Lee High School. A lot of music came out of this school in a round about way. Mae Boren Axton was a school teacher at this school when my mom attended and she wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" which became a major hit for Elvis Presley. Mae Boren Axton's son Hoyt Axton wrote "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy to the World" for Three Dog Night and was a major hit back in the 60s. That would be a song to react to as well. My uncle use to hunt with Hoyt when they were teenagers. Thanks for indulging me. Enjoyed your reactions and reviewed. This song crosses a lot of cultural and musical genre barriers for sure. Peace and love. God bless you both.
Thank you for sharing that story!!! I love Three Dog Night and never knew they didn’t author the songs. SO much talent out of Jacksonville; THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, 38 SPECIAL and even Limp Bizkit 😊
@@jacqueline4514 Also Kris Kristofferson's former wife Rita Coolidge's father preached at my grandfather's Baptist church on Broward road in north Jacksonville. Rita Coolidge was a star in her own right in the 60s and 70s. Hoyt Axton also graduated from Robert E. Lee high.
Free Bird is one of those songs i've heard a 1000 times. I wouldn't even think of putting it on for fun anymore. It's like Stairway or Hotel California or Cocaine that way. But that's why I enjoy this channel; watching these two discover great songs is a pleasure, and it makes me appreciate great music all over again. Well done guys. Keep it up!
I was about to post something similar. This song was so good they overplayed it on the radio and they say you can only take so much of a good thing. Tennessee Whiskey is starting to be that song today. Great song but, please don't overdo it. And I agree that these reaction videos are fun to watch as the younger gen is branching out.
That's what radio will do to you. They stomp the same songs over and over and over and over again into the ground. Thank goodness I never listened to much radio, because even though I have heard this and the others you mentioned a lot of times, 45 years later I am not really sick of them. To me, they're just another track on the album! Great comment, Dave: it really is great to see people discovering stuff like this.
Although not written for him, Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated this song to the memory of Duane Allman after he died in a motorcycle accident. In October of 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd were involved in a fiery plane crash where 6 of 20 people died, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. The record company immediately recalled their latest album, Street Survivors, which pictured the band on the cover, surrounded by flames. They rereleased the album without the flames. You really need to see them perform this live. Three lead guitars, a bass, piano, and drums, all in perfect harmony. It is spectacular. In my opinion, the best rock performance of all time.
Steve Gaines was a stellar guitarist. He was just getting started when he died so young along with his sister, backup singer. Cassie Gaines and the world will forever miss Ronnie Van Zant's voice. He was a brilliant singer. After seeing the crash site and plane, it's a miracle anyone survived. I'm glad his brother, Johnny Van Zant, headed the band up, and they continued. I love the saying, "I might be old, but I've seen all the great bands" 👍
Their absolutely best performance of this song live, was at their concert in the Oakland Coliseum in 1977. If you get the chance to react to it, you won't be sorry. It's a blast.
Well I saw them in Miami in spring of 1974. Charlie Daniels opened for them. Both bands played on the ocean on some type of a barge! It was friggin incredible! I later saw them at Eastern Michigan University! Both times were awesome! But man, I wish there was video of that gig on the ocean in Miami!! PEACE!
@@scotmiculan7055 so many I wish had been recorded. They talked abt video recording One More From the Road but RVZ felt it might be too distracting because it was double live LP & the guys were nervous, they felt this was time to prove if you came to Skynyrd concert, it would sound like the album version so decided against it. I keep hoping someone d2od it anyway & it will surfave someday!
@@jimwhite3719 I have to Agree with you Jim, Knebworth IMO opinion is best live video version out there. Oakland is good, depends on what you want to see, Oakland is like at least 50% bunch of screaming girls in audience almost through the entire ballad part & part of Allen's solo, near the end is great but to me Knebworth great from beginning to end
Lynyrd Skynyrd named themselves after their high school teacher/coach Leonard Skinner. Apparently a favorite of theirs and a bit of a private joke amongst themselves. It could be seen as a tribute to Mr. Skinner. Freebird is a true Southern Rock anthem that saturated the airwaves of the Baby Boom generation, of which I am one. Glad to see your reaction to this guitar hero classic.
Um...not really a "favorite" teacher, but a hard-ass that couldn't stand boys with long hair! It was more of a jab at the dude, and Skinner sued them, but they settled out of court and ended up with an uneasy friendship.
No their Gym teacher Mr Skinner didn’t like the guys cause of the long hair …. The way they spelled the name of the band was a stab at Mr Skinner …. I always wondered if he ever had kids and told them this story
@@theodoreritola9758 As good as?! The 70s were WAY better. Led Zep, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Carpenters, Outlaws, Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder.
There's a live version of this filmed at a concert that is a must see, it's really good. This song is one of my favorites from when I was a kid hanging out in a park by my house with a 6 pack and a boom box. You might want to check out "Hold On Loosely" by 38 Special if you like southern rock like this.
"Hold On Loosely" was the first song a girl told me to listen too , as the reason she was breaking up with me.. that's when I learned you can smoother someone, by being around too much
Lead singer of Skynyrd.. Ronnie Van Zant...his brother Donnie Van Zant was in 38 Special...their little brother Johnny Van Zant currently sings lead in Skynyrd...
There's a live version that's 14 minutes plus they have many hits check out " That Smell " or " You Got That Right " RIP Gentleman we still remember you 🙏♥️
I you are talking about "the Live version" as the one in Oakland. The sound quality is horrible in that one. I did see them at the near by Concord Pavilion, a little more smaller venue the the Oakland Stadium around this time. Many years later at an indoor in a casino with my late wife's favorite band, 38 Special, their family and friends Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes not killed from the plain crash.
Way, way back as a young Marine deployed to Okinawa, this song would get played every time we walked into this one tiny little bar in Henoko. I'm sure the owner got so sick of it, but for us it reminded us of home and what we left behind. Mimi, we still remember you and the times you would lock the doors and break out the good sake.
@@dongrogg5765 I was there a bit later in '88. Right outside of Stalag Schwab was the little town of Henoko. My memory might be a little off so bare with me. When you walked into town, there was a fried rice stand where the road branched left and right. Down the right path were most of the bars. Mimi's wasn't on the main drag. I can't remember exactly how to get to Mimi's bar or even what the actual name of the place was, but I know it was down a side street, well off the beaten trail. I found it by accident exploring the town. It was extremely small, maybe 200 sq/f, not much more than that. When you walked in, you do a right face and the few tables are in front with the bar to starboard. Don't remember if the juke box was to port or on the back wall. I wanna say to port, but I could be wrong. Mimi was gorgeous, late twenties or early thirties. Had a half American son. Don't think the father even knew before he rotated back. As a result, she would never date any of us. But that woman was a sweetheart. If business was slow, she'd lock the doors and break out the good sake. We'd have a few and then escort Mimi to all the other bars in town and get the most jealous looks from all the other servicemen having to settle for the "by me drinkie" girls. And absolutely nobody would disrespect her in our presence. Ever. Not even Shore Patrol. I've tried using Google Maps street view in Henoko and it's useless. I just can't remember where the place is. I hope Mimi and her son had a good life.
@@maingun07 shoot brother, I can barely remember anything from back then. I was with MATCS-18 back then (Mobile Air Traffic Control Squadron). We deployed to front lines to guide air support. Seems to me there were bars all over the island. Okinawa’s main resource was the Marine Corps I do believe.
@@dongrogg5765 Hell, I count myself lucky if I remember to put on pants in the morning. Between us and the Air Force, we kept their economy afloat in cash and they kept us afloat in booze. In my entire six month UDP I didn't save a penny, but damn I had a good time! I was in 1st Tanks from Pendleton, but my company was attached to 1st Tracked Vehicle Battalion, half tanks and half amtracks. It was the first unit you passed as you cleared the main gate at Schwab. I think you guys were all the way down at the bottom of the hill, or maybe I'm thinking of a different squadron. There were definitely a few helos around, I'm sure of that much. Hey, are you the folks that would supply us with a FAC? Usually, the FAC replaces the loader on the XO's tank. I was on the XO's crew once and had to teach this hotshot fighter pilot captain which main gun rounds were which and how to load without getting creamed by the breach. One of the weirdest things I ever did in the Corps.
Live at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 is such a great version. You get to see all of this live. Plus, all of us who were at the show get to re-live it! 😉
@@757optim I was that blonde! Just kidding but I was in the crowd somewhere and on someone’s shoulders probably. It was the 70s, I can’t remember a whole lot. 😂😂
As amazing as the guitar solo is almost everyone overlooks the job the drummer did. At 10:50 he cranks it up and it sounds like a fricking helicopter hovering overhead.
The poignant element of this song and why it resonated with everyone, shortly after this song was released The Lynyrd Skynyrd Tour plane crashed killing the singer and other band members and crew. The opening line of "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me" - becomes something totally more than just a breakup song with a girl.
@@the_Real_Grammy_of_6 that plane was on its' way to my hometown, Baton Rouge, La. The surviving members of the band honored those who bought tickets many years later by performing a makeup concert.
They were on there way to Baton Rouge, LA. Such a terrible tragedy, but I saved my tickets and they toured again years later with the lead singers younger brother taking his place and the tour started in Baton Rouge. People that keep their tickets got select seating and backstage passes to meet the band with food and drinks. Great time, even caught a drum stick and had it signed.
Wentworth in England opening for the stones, I was 18 yrs old in the army in Germany , 4 of us to a train to France caught a boat to England to see both groups play memory of a lifetime
This is eerie, because this popped up on my feed today, Monday, March 6th, 2023. Yesterday, March 5th, 2023, the last original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, guitarist Gary Rossington, passed away at the age of 71. He is the guitarist who played the hauntingly beautiful opening solo using a slide. If you really want to see just how awesome they were live, you can see the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line up (before the crash) playing Free Bird in the Oakland Coliseum in 1977. There’s another great live video of them playing live in 2003 in Tennessee, with Ronnie Van Zandt’s brother, Johnny on lead vocals, and Ricky Metlock of Black Oak Arkansas on lead guitar. Gary Rossington plays slide guitar as always. Both are awesome performances. RIP Gary Rossington. You’re truly “Free As A Bird Now” with your Skynyrd family in Heaven. Beautiful reaction! The links to the two live performances are below my comment. God Bless! 1977 Original Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird: ua-cam.com/video/QxIWDmmqZzY/v-deo.html 2003 Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird: ua-cam.com/video/qr3dWscslo8/v-deo.html
Lynyrd Skynyrd are a band, not a singular artist. However, Lenard Skinner was their PE (physical education/coach) at school who they all thought was an ass. So the band name was them making fun of him
He also hated long hair and rock music. The guys in Mr. Skinner’s class were sent to the Principal’s office many a time for their hair and clothes. He was an ass.
My great aunt taught at Lee High School, DuPont and Fletcher. She was head of the English department at the Duval County school board before she retired, then taught at JU. She didn’t have anything nice to say about him. He ended up selling real estate at the beach for awhile. I know I put a lot of superfluous stuff in here, but too many people claim stuff that ain’t true
Saw them several times in the 70s and they played this until the ceiling tiles were falling 😎y'all really need to see this live in Oakland it's 4 guitars at once😆
FUN FACT: Back in 1974 when the band was putting together the final version of the album "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd" they did not want to put this song on the record because it was too long and thought most people would not like it. Their manager decided that they should keep it in and it became one of the most well know rock songs of all time. Thank god for that man
No, their producer (Tom Dowd) DIDNT want to include it because he thought it was too long and would never get airplay. Ronnie Van Zant basically kicked him out of the studio (Muscle Shoals Sound Studio) and said "we're recording it ourselves" and didn't let him back in until they were done. Dowd said "Ronnie was VERY convincing..." He basically threatened to kick his ass if he tried to stop them. Glad he listened. :-)
J: "That could have gone on for another ten minutes, and I'd have been *fine* with that." Skynyrd fans: "Check out one of the Live performances. Your wish shall be granted." 🤘😁🤘
Hahahahaha...very true...I was lucky enough to see them live a few years ago and it did go on forever...AMAZING!! I suggested they watch the one from 1977 at Oakland Coliseum to see how they just feed off each other, there's no denying that!!
Allman brothers birthed the southern blues genre, blending soul, rock, blues, jazz, country all together with superb playing. They were at the height of their career at 24 years old !! The brothers studied the blues and other artists then formed their dream band. One of the few that had two drummers. Got that hint from James Brown ! You can hear one song like Whipping post and then hear a different sound in "Melissa", they are the best. At such a young age. Thanks.
First Skynyrd is mostly a Southern Rock band, but they do have that hardness in them as you can tell by the middle of the song.. Second they actually got a standing ovation for this song when they opened for The Who.
Actually, the surviving members have repeatedly stated that it was basically Alan Collins just going off. He did pretty much all of the soloing in that song.
Actually 2 out of 3 of those are Collins.. He came into the studio with the entire solo already recorded on a tape. He soloed once then soloed over himself and that is what you hear on the album. One man dueling guitars.
They had three lead guitarists and they take turns playing the solo. It is an awesome thing to see. I saw them 5 times in the 70's. True Southern rockers.
You should do “That Smell” “Tuesday’s Gone and “I Need You”...For more Pink Floyd try “Wish You Were Here” and “Hey You”...and Led Zeppelin’s “When The Levee Breaks”
That Smell...love it...but Rob and Amber will love Call Me The Breeze! Skynyrd always had great background singers, horns and whatever else made you get up and dance
When they would do this song on stage, usually the last song, Gary Rossington would do the slide guitar lead work with Allen Collins and Steve Gaines doing the rhythm guitar work at the beginning of the song and during the vocals. But once the vocals were over Allen Collins would then take over with amazing lead work that just blew everyone's mind. Then while Gary Rossington was doing the rhythm work, Steve Gaines would join in with Allen Collins in like a lead guitar duel. This song would often go on for a half an hour at live shows and nobody minded at all. For us Baby Boomers who were into Southern Rock and Roll this song was like THE anthem of Southern Rock. Everyone always talks about Ronnie van Zant the vocalist, and I really liked his voice but it was always the musicians in this band that always amazed me. The drummer, the bass player and the keyboard player were all amazing musicians and then how many groups have you ever heard of that had three, count them, three LEAD guitarist, anyone of which could leave you sitting there with your mouth hanging open.
Billy Powell was a stage hand and when Ronnie heard him playing around on the piano one day he said that he was classically trained and that was the start of his career with the band! May he RIP.
I graduated high school in 1980. Never got to see this band, but this song was played at the end of our graduation. It was most definitely a huge part of the soundtrack of my high school years.
Good for you. Keep in mind that we are all prisoners of our youth. By the age of 30 , almost everybody has their " favorite songs". It's not wrong, or sad or anything negative, it's biology. My own theory is it's all those hormones racing through our bodies, making the reds redder, the blues more calming, the emotions more earth shattering.
The Skynyrd boys kept from dying while waiting for their chance to record at the little Burlap Palace, also known as Muscle Shoals Sound studios. To keep from starving, they walked the streets of Sheffield, Alabama, picking up coke bottles and turning them in for 2 cents a bottle. Wasn't no easy way to succeed in Music's hey day. You had to be a TOUGH mother flucker to make it in that time period(the 60s and 70s) when all the greats were dueling for the top spots in the charts. To show you the drive and determination of the Men of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Every night they had to fight their way to Belews'Truck stop against truckers who didn't like their long hair. They had nothing to fall back on. They couldn't go back to mama. It was do or Die.
Freebird was played at my brother’s funeral back in 1983. I met Artemis one night at a bar in Memphis and he told me he has heard about people playing Freebird at funerals more than he would care to remember. I can see why, now, at my age.
I knew you two would both love this song but for different reasons. Jay for the screamin guitar duet, and Amber for the hippie meditational vibe. Jay got into the meditation by the end as well. Live performances of this were an absolute trip. Loved your reaction as always.
It would be interesting to listen to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and then follow that by Lynard Skynard's "Sweet Home Alabama" which was their response :)
I was sitting here watching you absorb the LS greatness thinking to myself your young ladies and new young gentleman are going to have a truly spectacular and diverse musical education in their future.Your UA-cam family were blessed to grow up with this great music, and are now blessed to see you experience it again with you
This song closed every Skynyrd show. It was a completely amazing experience to sing with 10’s of thousands of people. All the surrounding humanity jamming to the same beat, the triple guitars and Ronnie’s amazing voice. Unforgettable. RIP Ronnie, Steve and Cassie. 🤘🏼🔥🍑
i remember when the song ended ( i saw them live twice ) and there was a half second before the crowd roar became deafening, too. my ears were ringing and me and my pals were screaming, jumping, and slugging each other. we didn't want it to end, but next it was time for cold beer and whiskey.
The words "if I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me?" are even more poignant now. I put this song on my turntable after I heard about the plane crash and didn't take it off for two solid weeks. This is a rock anthem and a pretty acceptable legacy for a great band!
Love the fact I got to see the Original Lynyrd Skynyrd Band before the plane crash ….. you guys need to go back and watch the Live Version of this in Cali …. No one does Simple Man like Lynyrd Skynyrd you can get hurt for saying things like that lol 😂 …… you gotta watch the Guitar players and the whole band Live Live Live Live Live …… you have to experience Lynyrd Skynyrd and only way to do that is to see them live…. You like the guitar solo’s you gotta see them live ………. Watch it live live live
I did too! It was their very first concert of more than their usual amount of 200 people (that was from their documentary).... they opened for The Who at the SF Cow Palace packed with 16,000 people in 1973. They were really engaging and got good reviews ❤️
You to look like a very good couple , Have you reacted to the 70s Band THE B52s yet ? Try there song ROCK LOBSTER from 1978 . You will thank me big time ,, Take care ,,, Your very fun to watch
Artimus Pyle and Billy Powell were the only ones of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band that survived the plane crash. They are still playing today. They are both amazing.
5:34 "It's the slowest I've heard so far", just you wait. Remember when this came out. The 70's were a great time to grow up in. Both riff and the solo were written by Allen Collins (RIP) [he's on the left of the picture you have on screen]. When playing this live the first part was usually played by Gary Rossington the other guitarist.
One of the true rock anthems. I don't know how often you review comments to older reactions, but you HAVE to react to the live version from 1977 Oakland. The band and the crowd just feed off of each other. Remember all the girls you will see in this video are now probably someones grandma. This was from the time of the super concert when promoters would put on a show in an open air stadium with two or three BIG acts.
when we take our country back from the leftists/marxists. Freebird will be out new national anthem. “They will not enslave us because we are the free birds. It is in our DNA
You guys just got yourself a new subscriber! You're both entertaining, knowledgeable about what type of genre you're reacting to, have great chemistry, AND you're the first music reaction channel I've ever been recommended. I look forward to binging your videos!
Ya'll have a new fan. So much fun to watch you two. As hard as it is for me to believe the music you've never heard, it's refreshing and a blessing to see you discover and appreciate so much of my life's joys. And Amber is just beautiful, so soulful and a joy to watch her feeling the music. Keep up the great work and hope more young folks will discover ya'll.
Wow! you just brought back some memories. I'm from Jacksonville and in high school used to party at the river out in the woods. We called it the bluffs, Ronnie and the band partied at the same spot years before us. It was developed about 25 years ago. No more keg parties at the bluffs. :(
I play in bar bands most my life, never had a night someone didn't yell " play some Skynyrd !" When i was young we played a biker rally, someone yelled it, we didnt really have any. An old cat comes up, says " If you don't play some Skynyrd, AC/DC, Merle Haggard, or something close, you may not make the whole night." And was SERIOUS! so we played a few Skynyrds we felt we could make it thru Lol
I was thinking early on when Amber said she was expecting a harder sound, just wait! They rock out! Gary Rossington and Allen Collins slay the guitar run on this. Both Rossington and Collins survived the plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant and other members of Skynyrd. Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie’s brother became the lead singer after the crash. True Southern Rock! ♥️♥️♥️
That was so nice! I hadn’t listened to “Freebird” in months. Obviously it’s one of the best songs of all time. Y’all should listen to the live version one day. Saw the band in concert 6 months before that plane crash. They played this song for over 18 minutes! One of the greatest live bands ever!!
me too!
18 minutes, Cool
Embarrassed to say this, but I'm from a generation after this time. I was listening to this wondering why there isn't more live footage. Of course that's why. RIP, but the music lives forever!
I also did ! In Las Vegas ! Never will forget the piano 🎹 . Good concert definitely !
You saved me the trouble of typing this.lol
It's Allen Collins on lead, Gary Rossington on rhythm and slide and Ed King on bass.
I have always called it triple lead guitars.
The live version is insane, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium
Nobody wants to see that damn rebel flag...quit suggesting that bs to black people.
Oh wow!! Yes. I was there!

“I was expecting a really hard rocking song.”
Wait two minutes. 😉
Hahahahaha!!
Yeah! Like that's gonna happen.
For REAL!!!
Yeah, I started laughing when, Amber said that. & was laughing even harder when the guitar solo's started up &, Jay's eyes nearly popped out of his head.
Love hearing first time reactions for just this
Possibly one on the most known/epic rock songs ever.
Right up there with Stairway to Heaven.
( Better lyrics and better music)
This song is second to none!!! 15:10 15:10 15:10
The rumor is that the guitar solo is still going on, somewhere deep in the south. Love the reaction. And I really dig Ambers take on the song "This IS my Free Bird." Kind of perfect.
that's funny. you know, i bet that guitar solo is still going on. it is in my mind anyway.

My dad showed me this song at 14 i was blown away, still jamming 24 years later
And that's why our music will never die unlike modern music
I played this for my dad (big old time country fan) and he started tapping his foot when the guitars took off... when it was done he looked over and said, "them boys can handle an ax". RIP Dad.
This has to be the most accurate description of what this solo is to the rock world. Just dudes ripping their guitars to its fullest. Ax slayers for sure lol

Losing this band was one of rocks saddest moments, but they left us with some iconic songs & Free Bird is up there true Southern Rock & the guitar is only the best head banging parts of this song. The lead into the guitar solo is the musical equivalent of dropping a gear and diving into the fast lane.
Relatable
I agree this is definitely a song that was written to be played live. It’s great recorded but knocks it out of the park live.
It's more of a 4th to 2nd kinda hit....
No, No, No. We cannot pause in the middle of a guitar solo. Right when you can't take any more, it's because that's what the artist is going for. Hang with them. Feel the vibe and survive the ebbs and flows. Please.
Totally agree.
Stop the Pausing👍👍👍👍👍Comment after the song
Agreee!!! And when you do stop, you HAVE to go back. If you chop up the Mona Lisa, you can’t unsee it for the first time and have the same reaction.
I don't mind the pausing as much as the effing commercial breaks in the middle of the song.
Come on You Tube, you should know better.
In his defense, it is like the entire second half of the song!
At 5:25 in this video, when you guys said this song is really slow, I got a huge smile on my face thinking, if they only knew what was coming! One of the most epic Rock n Roll song of all time! 😊🎸
Same!

I’d only argue by saying Bohemian Rhapsody was bigger and to a certain point better.

If you hear this song while driving your car, you're almost guaranteed to break the speed limit.
Truth
When the solo starts you just start getting heavier on the gas pedal until next thing you know you're doing 95
This and Highway Star, it's true.
You mean sound barrier?
For me its Foghat's "Slow Ride".
It's called Southern Rock, it's not heavy. It takes you on a journey.
Well said!
No auto tune needed just pure raw talent.
L.S.!! LONG LIVE THE SOUTH! This was REAL music from the 70s and I remember when freebird was released... Took music to a whole new level! These where real musicians! Smoke a bowl and listen to freebird!
Rossington & Collins would practice together all day long to get their guitars in sync.
Excellent comment 🥇🥇
Back in March 2020, I played a gig out of town, in New Mexico. Our drummer wanted to have a family and friends party, and his brother is a guitar player, as am I. I'm not a big fan of "Free Bird", as it is a very taxing song to play, but the crowd insisted, and we played it. I've never seen a more "in to a song" audience ever. The song went on for what felt like an hour, my forearms were cramping, but people were jumping, screaming, and actually doing the "we're not worthy" genuflecting to us. A memory I will always carry with me.
I'm so glad you played it for them. Every new generation needs to hear this song!!!!
Great story. As a Jacksonville native, I'm so proud of their music.
TAKE CARE!

"Wait for it" is so damn spot on my friend.
Hoyt Axton was totally cool.
The name of that school has probably been ‘canceled’ ?
@@andrewmaull816 And of course many of the original band members including Ronnie Van Zant went to Robert E. Lee High School as well.

That's why I only listen to free bird about every 5 years. Then it's so much more emotional.
Longest solo in rock history. Also longest pointless silo in guitar history.
@@scottcard672 is a guitar solo ever truly pointless?
Definitely showed how great they were.
Oakland was good...but live at Knebworth 1976 is my favorite.
Sorry ,knebworth was the bomb.
That aint what Joe Dirt said when he came back from the past.
No their Gym teacher Mr Skinner didn’t like the guys cause of the long hair …. The way they spelled the name of the band was a stab at Mr Skinner …. I always wondered if he ever had kids and told them this story

I hear ya brother, I wonder if it was the same bar we went to? Was in Oki in late 70’s.

Their manager decided that they should keep it in and it became one of the most well know rock songs of all time. Thank god for that man
Manager was probably a guitarist or a musician of some instrument and knew it would be good
Written for Dewain Almond.
LOL you mean Duane Allman. One of greatest guitarists ever.
Considered one of, if not the best Rock songs of all time. And IT IS !!
J: "That could have gone on for another ten minutes, and I'd have been *fine* with that."
Skynyrd fans: "Check out one of the Live performances. Your wish shall be granted."
🤘😁🤘
Must listen to the live version for sure.
I vote for the version from Oakland in '77.
Hahahahaha...very true...I was lucky enough to see them live a few years ago and it did go on forever...AMAZING!! I suggested they watch the one from 1977 at Oakland Coliseum to see how they just feed off each other, there's no denying that!!
The Fox Atlanta version is the best: here it is: ua-cam.com/video/oaKWI7UcEIM/v-deo.html
Yeah Oakland 1977!!!!
If you like this, check out "Midnight Rider" or "Whipping Post" by The Allman Brothers.
BTW, this song was a tribute to Duane Allman.
Soulshine is another awesome song by them.
Thanks.
"Soulshine" or "Blue Sky" would be most excellent choices as well
I grew up with Skynyrd, when I listen to them, so does everybody else within a half mile radius of me.
that loud, eh? I like your comment by all means, just making some light of it.
@@philippederome2434 It's not loud enough unless your neighbor's LAWN dies!!!! 🤣
First Skynyrd is mostly a Southern Rock band, but they do have that hardness in them as you can tell by the middle of the song.. Second they actually got a standing ovation for this song when they opened for The Who.
This might arguably be the greatest Rock and Roll song ever.
EVERRRRRR!!!!!!!
It's definitely our southern national anthem. You can bet no one from the south ever changes the station when it comes on.
EVER.
@Trashthlete The beginning of the song is used as a platform for the 2nd half to shoot off of.
A good one yes, the best? Not so sure about being "The Best"
The guitar "solo" is actually three guitarists trading off on the licks...
Actually, the surviving members have repeatedly stated that it was basically Alan Collins just going off. He did pretty much all of the soloing in that song.
and the bass player
Actually 2 out of 3 of those are Collins.. He came into the studio with the entire solo already recorded on a tape. He soloed once then soloed over himself and that is what you hear on the album. One man dueling guitars.
@@dmstewart66 yeah, and from what I read the third was Gary Rossington doing the rhythm part.
You couldn’t be more wrong.
If you like this, check out the live version
Live from the FOX Theater in Atlanta , Best southern album ever!
There’s a reason that every concert still has someone screaming for Free Bird 😂 it’s the perfect jam band moment
Watch the live performance! The crowd is unbelievable, but watching them perform will amaze you!! There are three guitars going there!!!
They had three lead guitarists and they take turns playing the solo. It is an awesome thing to see. I saw them 5 times in the 70's. True Southern rockers.
Allan Collins, Gary Rossington, Steve Gaines. Steve did not survive the crash...neither did Ronnie Van Zant the band leader/ lead vocalist.
The studio version was actually just Allen Collins doing the solo.
Not this time. This is the original. Allen Collins did both guitars in the solo.
@@Elvisrivers1 Gary Rosington is alive, and still plays.
@@christopherbako I thought he died recently. Well good then.
You’ve gotta check out Molly Hatchet, “Flirtin’ With Disaster”.
Yes!! Try this by Molly Hatchet. 2 in 1 video.

Dreams I'll Never See/Flirtin' with Disaster
dont bother its shit
3 lead guitars in this band. Wow 👌, I forgot how great they sound.
One of the greatest rock songs ever written
and the best end of a movie ever... devils reject... exactky so i wanna die once...
You should do “That Smell” “Tuesday’s Gone and “I Need You”...For more Pink Floyd try “Wish You Were Here” and “Hey You”...and Led Zeppelin’s “When The Levee Breaks”
Tuesdays Gone with the wind♡
so many good songs!
That Smell...love it...but Rob and Amber will love Call Me The Breeze! Skynyrd always had great background singers, horns and whatever else made you get up and dance
Do gimme three steps, ballad of Curtis Lowe, Tuesday’s gone, dear god there’s so many good ones it’s hard to choose.
Yeah, I made a CD for a young friend, just the basics. 17 songs.
Call Me the Breeze, Curtis Lowe...couple of my favs.
truly one of the all time great songs- Collins and Rossington's guitars pull at the heart strings after nearly 50 years, exceptional.
I had their greatest hits and it was stolen!
And all the while Leon Wilkeson keeping up with all of them on bass during the solo.
While Steve Gaines was absolutely phenomenal, he took the baton from the incomparable Ed King, who absolutely set the tone for so many of their hits.
The holy trinity of guitar solos:
Layla
Freebird
Stairway To Heaven
Comfortably Numb is up there too imo
Maybe Hotel CA

Black Magic Woman
Highway Star by Deep Purple
Billy Powell was a stage hand and when Ronnie heard him playing around on the piano one day he said that he was classically trained and that was the start of his career with the band! May he RIP.
I graduated high school in 1980. Never got to see this band, but this song was played at the end of our graduation. It was most definitely a huge part of the soundtrack of my high school years.
I grew up on 70’s and 80’s rock. That’s what u call REAL music!!!!
AGREED!!!!
Same here!! Real talent for singing, no auto tune
Playing a set live in a bar… Some drunk guy: “play Freebird!!!” …. Inevitability
Or “ Simple Man!!” 😂
In a bar ,I yell it out at men's night at church
"The audience doesn't actually want you to play 'freebird', they're just heckling you."
Lol! ALWAYS!!!
I think everyone in my generation wants this played at their funeral .
I told my wife exactly that !!
Freebird was played at my brother’s funeral back in 1983. I met Artemis one night at a bar in Memphis and he told me he has heard about people playing Freebird at funerals more than he would care to remember. I can see why, now, at my age.
It was played at my brother's funeral and so was Simple Man. We lived in Jax, Fla. and my siblings went to Lee High. Big Lynard Skynard fans!!
I knew you two would both love this song but for different reasons. Jay for the screamin guitar duet, and Amber for the hippie meditational vibe. Jay got into the meditation by the end as well. Live performances of this were an absolute trip. Loved your reaction as always.
It would be interesting to listen to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and then follow that by Lynard Skynard's "Sweet Home Alabama" which was their response :)
i also put in a request for 'sweet home' but i'd forgotten about neil young.
If I never heard SHA again I'd be just fine with it. The most overplayed song ever on radio. Great song, I'm just so worn out on it.
Southern man dont need him around anyhow.
@@sylvesterstewart868 "It doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you."
Yes!!!! They definitely need to do this
I was sitting here watching you absorb the LS greatness thinking to myself your young ladies and new young gentleman are going to have a truly spectacular and diverse musical education in their future.Your UA-cam family were blessed to grow up with this great music, and are now blessed to see you experience it again with you
This song closed every Skynyrd show.
One of the BIGGEST songs to come out of the 70s
Lisa
I have next seen gen of Van Zandt, Johnnie when he sang for his late brother's band some years ago.
There are only 2 words to describe this song. BAD ASS.
You got that right ….you shore got that right ….. see what I did there lol
Everybody always talks about the guitars but let us give some props to Bob Burns (and Artimus Pyle live '76) on the drums! Amazing!
Hate to tell anyone but the guitars aren't doing anything a 10 year old can't play
not to mention the Billy intro on keys.....
@@prprod Noticed that on your instructional video....which is where? Thankfully there isn't a D in your surname , because you're not worthy of it.
Them: this isn't what I expected from LS.
Me: just hang on a sec...
“Sweet Home Alabama” is the southern anthem by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
when we take our country back from the leftists/marxists. Freebird will be out new national anthem.
“They will not enslave us because we are the free birds. It is in our DNA
O I thought it was West Virginia lol.

They are great and I am so glad I found this channel...definitely the best reaction channel on youtube! I just love them.
They are adorable together.
This song has one of the greatest guitar riffs ever ..it’s just a phenomenal song ..great choice .
At a high school dance you never knew what to do when it sped up just as you were getting a good slowdance going!!
One of the most popular songs to be RELEASED IN THEM 70s
RIP Allen Collins.
Keg parties at the lake during high school... Those were the days!
Yes takes me right back there
I miss those days too. Definitely seemed less encumbered back then 🙂
Wow! you just brought back some memories. I'm from Jacksonville and in high school used to party at the river out in the woods. We called it the bluffs, Ronnie and the band partied at the same spot years before us. It was developed about 25 years ago. No more keg parties at the bluffs. :(
The concert recording of Freebird is awsome unbelievably so much better live😃😃
I’ve never been to an outdoor concert that someone didn’t yell “Play Free Bird’.
hahahahahaha....so true.
Facts!
I’ve seen live streams of shit like metal concerts or rap shows and people still scream free bird the whole time
I play in bar bands most my life, never had a night someone didn't yell " play some Skynyrd !" When i was young we played a biker rally, someone yelled it, we didnt really have any. An old cat comes up, says " If you don't play some Skynyrd, AC/DC, Merle Haggard, or something close, you may not make the whole night." And was SERIOUS! so we played a few Skynyrds we felt we could make it thru Lol
Love watching you 2 react...
Freebird is the quintessential Southern Fried Rock song! The history of this band is tragic!
Esse é o maior solo de guitarra da história do Rock n Roll, obrigado pessoal por analisarem esse som maravilhoso!!!! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Freebird played at every bar near base during the hostage situation in Iran.
You’ve got to try Molly Hatchet “Flirtin with Disaster” another great southern rock song that’s an upbeat vibe
Gator Country and Dreams too.
Gator Country is great too
Good song, odd definition of "upbeat". ;-)
Hell yeah Molly Hatchet is my favorite!!!!
That was so nice! I hadn’t listened to “Freebird” in months. Obviously it’s one of the best songs of all time. Y’all should listen to the live version one day.
