All of Eddie's guitars end up in heaven because he played the hell out of them.
Ha!
This is the best thing I've ever read on UA-cam.
Not to be "that guy" but fun fact, Eddie's yellow guitar (Bumblebee) was buried with Dimebag Darrell from Pantera. Goat comment tho
@@treyfreeman3153 There are 2 versions on the story as to who placed it in the casket.
I'm sure you're aware of this.
Eddie decided he didn't want to see Dime, wanted to remember him the in same way as when they met, so Zach Wilde put it in for him.
The other version is Dimes girlfriend put it in, but I like the Zach version better.
Peace!
EDDIE.the magician ! I like the fact that one of the greatest guitarists in history. Played a. Frankenstein guitar a little duck tape. A few. Cigarette burns on the headstock only one. Humbucker with that. Fuckin. Fliyde rose. Tremelo WTF ? At the
Wanna remind everyone that he was drunk out of his MIND while playing that and still did it flawlessly. That's the power of Eddie. RIP King 👑
I was gonna say the same thing. Imagine the talent it takes to play that, and then imagine doing it while wasted.
Not during this specific concert, They were planning on filming it and told Eddie in advance to NOT get drunk. he ended up NOT drinking for two days. they recorded the first night in New Haven but the film got destroyed. They re-recorded the concert aging & well the rest is history!

As a child Eddie was trained as a classical pianist. So when he discovered electric guitar, he instinctively played that instrument the same way he played piano.
My thoughts exactly
That's fascinating.
From Beethoven to roll over Beethoven
He did play the piano on the Hagar Songs. Rite here right now and others
Yep you can hear Bach was a big influence. When I started listening to Bach, I was shit thats Eddies voicing. lol
I got to see Van Halen 3 times when I lived in Hawaii. One time, during Eddie's solo, his wife came out on stage with their toddler son to surprise him. He stopped playing for a minute and the crowd went nuts. His boy was wearing ear protection. When Eddie restarted his solo, he went absolutely ballistic! One of those moments in history which I was so fortunate to experience!
That toddler is now in his 30s and opened for Metallica this summer. The torch is passed.
@@glenmallory9982 Really? I didn't know that, so thanks for sharing. That's so cool!
@@buckbuchanan4902 Massive VH.
@@buckbuchanan4902 Wolfie has a gift-just like his Dad. There are quite a few videos on UA-cam of him and his Dad playing together and of him alone playing some of his own stuff. He has one he did after Eddie passed that will break your heart.. Wolfie can play anything Eddie did-Eddie made sure of that. There was Nothing in his life he was prouder of than his Son.♥️
@@Jackielocksagreed. Wolf could be the next Van Halen artistically and talent wise but he has too much respect for his dad to attempt it. Wolf can shred and writes good songs but Ed still had that “extra” that no one, not even Wolf, will ever have. And I know Wolf is cool with that! Just glad that I was on the same planet in the same time frame to witness it👍❤️
Legend …. Period. He built his own guitar when he first started . You can always tell if it’s eddie playing. His guitar has its own sound imo He learned to make sounds of other instruments with his guitar . I’m so glad y’all really appreciated this!
Funny how he started on the drums and his brother started on guitar.
Wow. This is one case in which technology has devolved our human talent. I don’t think anyone will understand what I wrote. Oh well, I do!
@@chrissgchriss there is still some really good talent out, but for the most part I agree.
Frankenstrat... That's the name of it
He actually only played it live he never used it for recording. But that sound he uses comes from Jimmy Hendrix who was his idol and big influence but what guitar player wasn’t influenced by Jimmy
The thing to remember is, this....was...his...warmup. This is how he warmed up before a performance. The original "Eruption" was recorded in the studio while everyone else was on break and he was just sitting there chilling, trying to keep his fingers warm.
Rip Eddie!!
YES!
Wow that’s a warm up gollee
This is literally in the middle of a show. That's not a warm-up
@@danieldietrich9969 I think you might need to reread my full comment. What I was saying was that the first time this was played and recorded, in the studio, it was a warm up for him to stay warm while everybody else was taking a break and having a cigarette.
He did things on his guitar that nobody thought was possible. Absolutely amazing. Rest in peace Eddy you will be missed but never forgotten.
I was fortunate to see Van Halen 7 times over the years, starting in 1982. During each concert, when it was time for Eddie's guitar solo, the crowd would become mostly silent because we knew something amazing was about to happen and didn't want to miss a note of it. It was only when he would stop and look at everyone that the audience erupted with cheers. As soon as he began playing again it was back to silence in the audience. Eddie loved to perform and always showed off some new technique he'd been working on since the previous tours. Man, it was so inspiring. I'm glad I got to be there live many times to scream my admiration with 20,000+ other fans. Enjoyed the video very much, guys.
Admire you young guys for stepping out of your comfort zone and checking out different things like this
I think that's how any reaction channel is successful and brings in a wider audience, it's nice when the reactions are as genuine as they are with these guys.
Makes me wanna cry every time I watch someone witnessing Eddie's greatness for the first time and watch them watch in awe. He really was the King of ten fingers and six strings. RIP EDDIE!
It's actually my favorite thing about watching reaction videos is watching someone experience this for the first time and it can actually bring me back to when I experienced you know something that I love so much so that's why I love watching them sounds like that's why you do too bro
Jimi Hendrix and EVH are the two greatest .,.they did new shit ...pushrf the limits of what could be done...Prince as a total .musician could be in that club...Prince is a freaking monster on guitar but his music was never permoted orvpushed hard on the hard rock world...I think he was overlooked and only recently accepted as a top notch guitar player ( probably due to dancing around playing funk and soul music...that hard rock or heavy metal was not really accepting of at that time...Jimi was unfairly said to play ..white music..lol rock n roll came from blues and that's all black music...any in all honesty
.this is my belief.. ...music needs no color and there are players and bands that can go from style to style and be seen as just great musicans...
Eddie SRV Prince and Jimi...were and are amazing musicans as well as bad ass guitar players....ok peace .

One gripe, please put down the cell phones id rather see your expressions. Thank you
Be even better if they’d STFU during the performance
Eddie's use of classical music scales in his solo here is simply amazing. One of rock guitar's true legends.
Eddie could play the crowd almost as well as he could play that frankenstrat - what an absolute legend of a performer!
Eddie is actually hitting notes with both hands when he plays, meaning his left hand is playing a string while his picking hand (right) is playing a separate note. He spoke about how most rock guitarist hadn’t figured that out yet, and he mentioned later in his career how guys were just starting to learn his technique. One of a kind and a pioneer in rock guitarists. He also loved the sound of tube amps and spent a lot of time and money finding and buying tubes.
The guy was tapping with one finger on the 3rd fret 2 fingers on the 5th fret and his pinky on the 8th. Lol not only would that be fuckin miserable to do most of the way threw a long ass solo but to be able to accurately reach that far across the neck is goals
He was also going so fast the cameras couldnt pick up the finger movements. It's crazy
One of my favorite guitarists besides Eddie, Michael angelo batio of nitro. his speed kills is one of my favorite technical shows from the time
@@xaphan8581 It really isnt THAT miserable. He is incredible because he WROTEEEE this stuff. You can impress almost anyone who doesnt play, by doing clean tapping. Because they cant wrap their head around that you arent strumming and that its sounds like there is no gap. Anytime someone does the dreaded "Oh you play guitar, HERE, play us something...." I start doing tapping because the response to it is "This dude is a master of his craft" and you really DONT have to be amster to achieve that. The actual skill comes in being able to write this fucking solo. Also, this live version, he does plays on stuff leading into the actual parts of the song. THATS talent. I firmly hold ground as a guitarist, thats not actually hard to tap. Its harder and cooler when you write a tapping part.
@@armpit_farts7327 yeah and that’s how I know you don’t play. Or you just suck and you wonna hate on people who can do shut you can’t. Anyone can say their a god on guitar but unless you have video no one cares

I heard one time that Eddie got the drum set and Alex got the guitar for Christmas and they switched almost immediately.

Welcome to the world of Eddie Van Halen, guys. "How's he making that sound with a guitar?" We all asked that question the first time we heard "Eruption" my friend.

So thankful to have grown up with VH. We were the luckiest generation ever to have experienced such talent first hand.
I saw Van Halen 3 times, Eddie played from the heart and never the same solo. I feel lucky to have seen him live.
Same 🎸 1979, 1880 and 1982. We were blessed to see the man live.
I have seen Van Halen a dozen times, 0:16 every time was unique and memorable! There will never be another EVH….
Gene Simmons from Kiss said in an interview once he went to see the young new band called Van Halen. He was amazed at that how the multiple guitar players could play so much in sync with each other. He was shocked to find out it was only Eddie. Gene invested in Van Halen and the rest is history. He was the best. RIP Eddie.
1986.. I was 18 years old.. you could feel the electricity in the air when he did his solo.. one of the best experiences ever. RIP
It's still in the air
Dimebag Daryll from Pantera, Solo from the song Domination Live from Moscow. Eddie and Dime were very close and when Dime was gunned down at a show in Ohio. Eddie put one of his most prized guitars in the casket with Dime. It's the guitar he used when they recorded Van Halen II.
You young men , have found the EVH and boy have you bought back memories . Saw this legendary man play live once , now he is no longer with us it makes me smile with joy to see young brothers appreciating his genius . One of the greatest to ever grind an axe .
I must've seen this solo at least 500 times, and I'm not exaggerating. It never gets old. He was a pioneer of this instrument the world will never see again.
This made me so sad that this talented man is no longer with us. I’m so blessed I lived in his lifetime
You and me both. When I first heard Van Halen, I hated it. I couldn't understand how Eddie was playing like that. My friend and I used to play pool in his basement and he would put Van Halen on the record player so that I would lose concentration and lose at pool. After a while, I really started to like it. And then LOVE it (and started to beat him at pool too).
I bought every album (yes... vinyl), after that and was crushed when he passed. I set up my keyboard sound system and played Eruption at 1000 watts / channel, full volume. Loved his music. Love his playing. Out of control and in control at the same time. Right on the edge. His mastery is truly missed.
These guys watching this are idiots, they have no idea what the are seeing,,,,,, morons.... god bless Eddie....
So many great musicians in the 70s& 80s. Clapton, Page, Young, Hendrix, Beck, Vaughn, Baker, Bonham, Collins, JPJ etc. My God what a time to live in.
They just don't make em like that anymore.
I saw Van Halen in 2015, that solo had evolved from this 80's version. Brought tears to my eyes as I stood back and listened. It is the most beautiful instrumental I have ever heard.
Eddie does the guitar solo in Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. Go have another listen to it now that you’ve heard him. His style is so recognizable.
Yes. Michael Jackson asked him to play it. After Eddie was done, he told Michael that he changed a few things. Michael said not only did he play what he wanted, but he left it better than written.
People still refuse to believe it.
Given that it was a huge hit for Michael Jackson he should have been paid for that solo. I guess he didn't invoice them. Lol!!
Steve Luthaker of Toto did the rest of the guitar ( and bass ) work on Beat It, great combo to have!!
This is my favorite Michael Jackson song and Eddie Van Halen song I was so young in my early twenties what fucking memories 🫶🏻🤩🔥🔥🔥❤️

Sure, s**t was
I went to a VH concert at the Lakeland Regional Center in 1980. After I left the venue, my hearing returned to normal after approximately one hour. It was so loud and I didn’t even realize it until I walked outside. It was a great concert. David Lee Roth was the lead singer. Eddie played the guitar like I’ve never heard before. Alex did a fantastic drum solo and Michael Anthony was a great bassist and singer. I just wish that I still had the concert T-shirt that I purchased.
I can’t imagine the inventors of the electric guitar thought someone would take it this far.
It's fascinating that throughout history the technical inventors of instruments from violins to pianos to guitars were rarely remotely the best at using them. It takes a village.
Les Paul actually said in an interview about Eddie’s playing, “I didn’t know it could do that!”
Go Cajuns!
@david price. I got what you were saying. I appreciate it you bro. Salute.
In case you didn't know, Eddie Van Halen was a self taught guitarist
He felt the music. I guess like Beethoven after he went deaf and could still compose some of most insane music of the time.
Hi parents were professional muso's as well 🤘🇦🇺
He was a very talented pianist before going to guitar. And then, he became a famous pianist after he became a famous guitarist.
He was a classically trained pianist as a child. And played drums as well. But the guitar, yep, he did that through practice, perseverance, vision, ambition…..
Technically this live show is “Van Hagar”

Its amazing that guys like EVH and SRV do things with the guitar that are not human i would have loved to see them perform live.
'Cathedral' is where Eddie makes his guitar sound like a big church organ. It's one of the most impressive things for me. It's impressive in every way.
Pipe organ maestros play a building. Eddie put the building in his amps!
If you look closely, he's not picking the strings -- he's using the volume/fade knobs, as he's pull-aways on the neck.
sounds more like a cello to me.
@WingsandBeer stupidest fkn comment in here! First of all it's "LIFESON". Second of all, Cathedral and Eruption were EVH warmups in early 70's. They just decided to add Eruption to 1977 album because it sounded cool. Same with Cathedral on Diver Down album in '82. If you are thinking of Rush's "Spirit of Radio" which sounds similar, that was actually a hammer on riff that was released in 1980 (3 years AFTER Eruption was recorded to album). So who ripped off who? SORRY not SORRY. I love Rush, but COME ON MAN!!!! don't be a Canadian HOMER
Y'alls reaction when you said " how is he doing that on the guitar!?!!" Was the same reaction we all had back when we heard his solo on the first album back in 78. Keep in mind that there was no internet or UA-cam back then so it was all just audible and the only way we could get a glimpse of him was to see them live. Eddie created a style on the guitar like no other which we all wanted to play guitar or even air guitar which made him our guitar hero back in the day. He was a genius and an innovator and master at his craft and used his own guitar made from different parts of guitars which cam the name " frankenstrat" guitar. All that you are listening to is all the solos or musical parts he has created on his albums such as eruption, Spanish fly, cathedral, mean street intro, and 316 (which wound up on For unlawful carnal knowledge album in 92) up til that point. Though this video is back in 86 he has done a lot more and has invented more til his death in 2020
The first time I heard Van Halen, 1978 I was 15 years old. I was at my nextdoor neighbor's house. She had just gotten a 45rpm that had Eruption on side A and Jamie's Cry'n on the B side. My life would never be the same.
Exactly! People hearing Eruption for the first time didn't think it was a guitar or thought it was two instruments playing
I saw Van Halen live during this 5150 tour in1986. Eddie's solo was simply amazing. Nobody has ever done it better, nobody ever will.

He was formally trained in classical music. And took it to a level that is now legend. And what he is playing is his version of Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. If you ever listen to classical. You will here the beat of every music you have ever heard in your life. He is truly a master. Given by God. Godspeed Mr. Van Halen. Thank you.
That's what I was going to comment on. When they're saying "He's getting this vibe from somewhere" they are right because he's rendering Baroque Chamber Music from the early 18th century. The fact he could do that on an electric guitar was both ground-breaking and mind-bending.
His parents were classical musicians and it shows. Same here. Mom introduced me to every kind of music she could find and never tried to steer me in any direction. My choices. Thats love

I believe the Van Halen brothers were classically trained and could play almost any musical instrument 🎶
All without pedals. When he was getting started he couldn’t afford pedals so he taught himself how to make all those sounds with just the guitar that other guitarists make with pedals. Simply amazing. He also played the solo on Beat It. And the “thumping” you hear during the solo, was Michael Jackson beating on an amp after walking into the studio not realizing they we recording. They left it in.
He used pedals and effects. Phase 90, Delay, Distortion, Wah....

One of the greatest to ever pick up an axe and thank you Eddie, thank you so so much. Rest easy brother. The world misses you.
it's amazing how he incorporates Mozart into the riff. Being able to get so many different instrumental sounds is equally beyond belief.
For example, at the 10-minute mark +/- he's getting the sound of a cello, and then cranks down the strings and makes it scream. He enjoyed playing Mozart so much they (his wife Valerie Bertinelli). named their son Wolfang.
Yes! He loved classical music!!!
Eddie himself was named after a classical composer, in his case Beethoven; his middle name was Lodewijk, the Dutch form of Ludwig.
The pedal tones were from Bach's Tocatta and fugue in Dm.

@@optimusprimum Elvis died in August 1977. He was doing Vegas shows then and they were always sold out.
In one of the interviews they did back in the Netherlands, it's clear that the classical training started very early for both brothers. The first time I heard Beat It shocked me, but it made sense for Michael to hire the best rock guitarist of his era to lay down that incredible solo.
I love watching people hear Eddie, Randy and other elite guitarists of that era for the first time. I relive being that kid being spoiled by these gods of rock from Jimi to Beck to Stevie and more.
I love the whispers of Bach in this. His technical abilities are unmatched.
It's more than a whisper. It's more like a scream.
If Bach had an electric guitar… he’d be EVH.
I heard it too
You can never go wrong with JSB or EVH 🎼🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎸😊❤
Alex and Eddie’s father is a musician also. They were both classically trained.
So, fun fact guys. Alex (Eddie’s brother, on the drums) used to play guitar. And Eddie used to play drums. They hated it, so when the other was out they would play the other’s instrument. Eventually they traded and they became the incredible band that they are! Now! To blow your mind! Eddie Van Halen played guitar and solo’d on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”. That long solo is solos from every album they released…. Also. A good friend of mine went to a few house parties in Southern California when he was really young and they were the band at those parties before they made it big.
Eddie always seems to be the happiest when he plays the guitar, because he is always smiling. Not bad for a guy who started out playing the drums.
Eddy also played the guitar solo on Michel Jackson's " beat it" song
Love watching you guys listen to and react to rock music. It's cool to see people who've never heard stuff like Van Halen's Eruption react to it for the first time
The solo "Eruption" is on their first studio album. Nobody had heard anything like EVH before. That first album blew everyone away.
Big Red TLC And thankfully helped kill off disco.
Yes , the 1rst two albums killed. 👍
Imagine releasing a hard rock album during the disco days lmao! Van Halen were way ahead of their time..legends
I'll never forget dropping the needle on the first album , life was never the same.
I was 14 when that album came out My Mind was blown!!!😲
I love watching young people discover Eddie's brilliance and appreciate it! This is what will keep his legacy and music alive. Thank you!
Literally the best glad yous got to see it finally i listen to it all the time cause it legendary and amazing to hear constantly and it also reminds me of my dad
You young fellas will never get the joy and excitement of seeing this man live. You think a video is badass. He could electrify a stadium of 30,000 people. Ive seen them many times when i was younger and they never disappointed. Good for you guys to checkout all music.
6:15 Just so you understand how amazing this is… this is called a competing or counter melody… basically two different players would play one or the other melody… Eddie plays them both… at the same time… on a guitar… it would be like slowing down your car and speeding up at the same time.
Absolutely a Rock Legend! Eddie is missed by all who experienced his music! ❤
I was in high school and saw them when 1984 came out. I had no idea I was listening to a legend.
I just love the look on you all faces when u heard eruption. I heard that solo in 1983 at had the exact same reaction.
God bless

The man picked up where Jimi left off and showed what the guitar was capable of doing. Rest in Paradise, King Edward.
