Every classical guitarist knows how to play the very same riffs that Eddie played and there are plenty of guys here on YT that do it just as good as him. God bless you and I know you have all those angels up in heaven rocking everyday everyday to your music
Damn Bro... I'm not gonna lie... I felt that. I was introduced to Van Halen by my stepdad when I was 10 years old in 1988. I lived in a ghetto. All the kids at school were all into rap and hip hop. I didn't mind rap or hip hop. Don't get me wrong. But when Panama, Hot for Teacher and JUMP! touched my wars... I was hooked!! May Eddie Rest in Peace in Rock 'n Roll Heaven. 🙏🏽✝️🪦

Not during this specific concert, They were planning on filming it and told Eddie in advance to NOT get drunk. he ended up NOT drinking for two days. they recorded the first night in New Haven but the film got destroyed. They re-recorded the concert aging & well the rest is history!
I got to see Van Halen 3 times when I lived in Hawaii. One time, during Eddie's solo, his wife came out on stage with their toddler son to surprise him. He stopped playing for a minute and the crowd went nuts. His boy was wearing ear protection. When Eddie restarted his solo, he went absolutely ballistic! One of those moments in history which I was so fortunate to experience!
@@buckbuchanan4902 Wolfie has a gift-just like his Dad. There are quite a few videos on UA-cam of him and his Dad playing together and of him alone playing some of his own stuff. @@Jackielocksagreed. Wolf could be the next Van Halen artistically and talent wise but he has too much respect for his dad to attempt it. Just glad that I was on the same planet in the same time frame to witness it👍❤️
The thing to remember is, this....was...his...warmup. This is how he warmed up before a performance. The original "Eruption" was recorded in the studio while everyone else was on break and he was just sitting there chilling, trying to keep his fingers warm.
@@danieldietrich9969 I think you might need to reread my full comment. What I was saying was that the first time this was played and recorded, in the studio, it was a warm up for him to stay warm while everybody else was taking a break and having a cigarette.
I appreciate how respectful these young men were, lifted my spirits. One gripe, please put down the cell phones id rather see your expressions. Thank you
As a child Eddie was trained as a classical pianist. So when he discovered electric guitar, he instinctively played that instrument the same way he played piano.
Eddie is actually hitting notes with both hands when he plays, meaning his left hand is playing a string while his picking hand (right) is playing a separate note. He spoke about how most rock guitarist hadn’t figured that out yet, and he mentioned later in his career how guys were just starting to learn his technique. One of a kind and a pioneer in rock guitarists. He also loved the sound of tube amps and spent a lot of time and money finding and buying tubes.
The guy was tapping with one finger on the 3rd fret 2 fingers on the 5th fret and his pinky on the 8th. Lol not only would that be fuckin miserable to do most of the way threw a long ass solo but to be able to accurately reach that far across the neck is goals
@@xaphan8581 It really isnt THAT miserable. He is incredible because he WROTEEEE this stuff. You can impress almost anyone who doesnt play, by doing clean tapping. Because they cant wrap their head around that you arent strumming and that its sounds like there is no gap. Anytime someone does the dreaded "Oh you play guitar, HERE, play us something...." I start doing tapping because the response to it is "This dude is a master of his craft" and you really DONT have to be amster to achieve that. The actual skill comes in being able to write this fucking solo. Also, this live version, he does plays on stuff leading into the actual parts of the song. THATS talent. I firmly hold ground as a guitarist, thats not actually hard to tap. Its harder and cooler when you write a tapping part.

I was fortunate to see Van Halen 7 times over the years, starting in 1982. During each concert, when it was time for Eddie's guitar solo, the crowd would become mostly silent because we knew something amazing was about to happen and didn't want to miss a note of it. It was only when he would stop and look at everyone that the audience erupted with cheers. As soon as he began playing again it was back to silence in the audience. Eddie loved to perform and always showed off some new technique he'd been working on since the previous tours. Man, it was so inspiring. I'm glad I got to be there live many times to scream my admiration with 20,000+ other fans. Enjoyed the video very much, guys.
The thing to pay attention to is how easy this is for him. The smile on his face and the joy in his heart and soul is truly astounding. This is Amadeus Mozart on a guitar. I am 46. I love watching you guys get leveled like I did at 6 years old 1984 discovering Eddie for the first time. Maybe earlier. Brings back such good memories. Thank you!
I think that's how any reaction channel is successful and brings in a wider audience, it's nice when the reactions are as genuine as they are with these guys.

Welcome to the world of Eddie Van Halen, guys. "How's he making that sound with a guitar?" We all asked that question the first time we heard "Eruption" my friend. May Eddie Rest In Peace. January 26, 1955 - October 6, 2020.
I must've seen this solo at least 500 times, and I'm not exaggerating. It never gets old. He was a pioneer of this instrument the world will never see again.
Gene Simmons from Kiss said in an interview once he went to see the young new band called Van Halen. He was amazed at that how the multiple guitar players could play so much in sync with each other. He was shocked to find out it was only Eddie. Gene invested in Van Halen and the rest is history. He was the best. RIP Eddie.

Firstly, mad respect to you young men, for expanding your listing library. The best thing about Eddie playing this solo wasn't because he was able to make the impossible look easy, and sound amazing, but that he was the innovator of playing guitar in this way. tc
Yes. Michael Jackson asked him to play it. After Eddie was done, he told Michael that he changed a few things. Michael said not only did he play what he wanted, but he left it better than written.
He was formally trained in classical music. And took it to a level that is now legend. And what he is playing is his version of Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi, etc. If you ever listen to classical. You will here the beat of every music you have ever heard in your life. He is truly a master. Given by God. Godspeed Mr. Van Halen. Thank you.
That's what I was going to comment on. When they're saying "He's getting this vibe from somewhere" they are right because he's rendering Baroque Chamber Music from the early 18th century. The fact he could do that on an electric guitar was both ground-breaking and mind-bending.
His parents were classical musicians and it shows. Same here. Mom introduced me to every kind of music she could find and never tried to steer me in any direction. My choices. Thats love
@@queenoflight6033 My grandfather played gospel and classical music in his home, my mother played different genres, and then as I got older, I listened to anything that moved me. Our brains are stimulated by other sounds. It's only we, as a collective, that limit ourselves.

I'm almost 61 years old and I remember hearing Van Halen's first album when they released it. I was only 17 years old, riding around in a '69 Chevelle with a 396 powerplant under the hood. Great memories.
'Cathedral' is where Eddie makes his guitar sound like a big church organ. It's one of the most impressive things for me. It's impressive in every way.
@WingsandBeer stupidest fkn comment in here! First of all it's "LIFESON". Second of all, Cathedral and Eruption were EVH warmups in early 70's. They just decided to add Eruption to 1977 album because it sounded cool. Same with Cathedral on Diver Down album in '82. If you are thinking of Rush's "Spirit of Radio" which sounds similar, that was actually a hammer on riff that was released in 1980 (3 years AFTER Eruption was recorded to album). So who ripped off who? SORRY not SORRY. I love Rush, but COME ON MAN!!!! don't be a Canadian HOMER
You and me both. When I first heard Van Halen, I hated it. I couldn't understand how Eddie was playing like that. My friend and I used to play pool in his basement and he would put Van Halen on the record player so that I would lose concentration and lose at pool. After a while, I really started to like it. And then LOVE it (and started to beat him at pool too). I bought every album (yes... vinyl), after that and was crushed when he passed. I set up my keyboard sound system and played Eruption at 1000 watts / channel, full volume. Loved his music. Love his playing. Out of control and in control at the same time. Right on the edge. His mastery is truly missed.
mtv showed this for the first time in 1988 i wore out MANY vhs tapes watching this,, thank God for dvds...im still blown away after all these years...yup im old...
Y'alls reaction when you said " how is he doing that on the guitar!?!!" Was the same reaction we all had back when we heard his solo on the first album back in 78. Keep in mind that there was no internet or UA-cam back then so it was all just audible and the only way we could get a glimpse of him was to see them live. Eddie created a style on the guitar like no other which we all wanted to play guitar or even air guitar which made him our guitar hero back in the day. He was a genius and an innovator and master at his craft and used his own guitar made from different parts of guitars which cam the name " frankenstrat" guitar. All that you are listening to is all the solos or musical parts he has created on his albums such as eruption, Spanish fly, cathedral, mean street intro, and 316 (which wound up on For unlawful carnal knowledge album in 92) up til that point. Though this video is back in 86 he has done a lot more and has invented more til his death in 2020
The first time I heard Van Halen, 1978 I was 15 years old. I was at my nextdoor neighbor's house. She had just gotten a 45rpm that had Eruption on side A and Jamie's Cry'n on the B side. My life would never be the same.
I saw him in concert, up close and personal, there are no words to describe how awesome he is. His mind goes as fast as his fingers. In my mind, his guitar is saying, c'mon Eddie, let's show them how it's done!
Every time I watch that clip, now that Ed has passed, it makes me cry - So good. But to watch you young men enjoy the experience of watching a truly legendary musician, I wept... Welcome to Eddie Van Halen
Eruption was on the 1st Van Halen album 1978. I was 18. You cant even imagine how shocking this album was. Were are talking disco was in its glory. Those of us who didn't care for disco and were rockers were speechless when the needle lowered on the record and out came Running With Devil and the rest. Rock was saved. :)
I was a rocker thru and thru. Never owned a disco record, never went to a disco and didn’t listen to it on the radio. It was Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, rush, yes, and blue oyster cult (more cow bell)!! 🥰🥰
So, fun fact guys. Alex (Eddie’s brother, on the drums) used to play guitar. And Eddie used to play drums. They hated it, so when the other was out they would play the other’s instrument. Eventually they traded and they became the incredible band that they are! Now! To blow your mind! Eddie Van Halen played guitar and solo’d on Michael Jackson’s “Beat it”. That long solo is solos from every album they released…. Also. A good friend of mine went to a few house parties in Southern California when he was really young and they were the band at those parties before they made it big.
He was a classically trained pianist as a child. And played drums as well. But the guitar, yep, he did that through practice, perseverance, vision, ambition…..
Love when all four of you were in stunned silence at the tapping. There really is nothing like hearing that for the first time, when you realize there’s a whole new level to playing the guitar you never knew existed. Some people are true geniuses of their craft.
@@mutinyrider666 - Yep. Steve Vai, and Vito Bratta could do it VERY well also. Vita looked up to Eddie like most guitarist do, but was on of the few who sounded great to. He had a more melodic sound playing with White Lion, because the music was different, but loved Vito also.

The guy Eddie on Stranger Things played Metallica 's song Master Of Puppets on the guitar. Eddie Van Halen past away Oct of 2020 at the age of 65 of a stroke but had also been battling throat cancer.
Eddie Van Halen is a legend, not for his talent, which is right up there with the best of the best, but because of his vision and innovation. He could play music on a guitar that no one thought was coming from a guitar. If only David Lee Roth had recognized that he wasn't the reason behind all of those hits before he walked away.
All without pedals. When he was getting started he couldn’t afford pedals so he taught himself how to make all those sounds with just the guitar that other guitarists make with pedals. Simply amazing. He also played the solo on Beat It. And the “thumping” you hear during the solo, was Michael Jackson beating on an amp after walking into the studio not realizing they we recording. They left it in.
This is coming from a man who never read one note of music in his life. He was self taught. He played every instrument. I'm 58 going to be 59 years old in the day they announced that he passed away I cried for over a week. Brother thank you so very much for giving my generation the greatest greatest music we have ever had, you took a level of guitar playing that should have been only for the gods of Olympus. God bless you and I know you have all those angels up in heaven rocking everyday everyday to your music
I’m with you. I cried as well. Still do from time to time. Still get those goosebumps when I hear his music.
To this day it still hurts 😢 coming up on four years still can’t believe he’s gone never to hear a new lick from his guitar 🎸 after I heard the news of his passing someone on the internet dedicated As My Guitar Gently Weeps it was so beautiful 😢cried all over again and urged people to never ever forget this man he was truly one in a million that can never ever be graced with his talents again and please 🙏🏻 play learn the guitar 🎸
Agreed! When I heard about Eddie's passing I was at work and couldn't contain my emotions. When I got home I put my headphones on, cranked Van Halen, went for a walk, and sobbed. The only celeb I have ever cried over. RiP Eddie!
My first concert! Snuck out of the house to go.

Jimi Hendrix and EVH are the two greatest .,.they did new shit ...pushrf the limits of what could be done...Prince as a total .musician could be in that club...Prince is a freaking monster on guitar but his music was never permoted orvpushed hard on the hard rock world...I think he was overlooked and only recently accepted as a top notch guitar player ( probably due to dancing around playing funk and soul music...that hard rock or heavy metal was not really accepting of at that time...Jimi was unfairly said to play ..white music..lol rock n roll came from blues and that's all black music...any in all honesty
.this is my belief.. ...music needs no color and there are players and bands that can go from style to style and be seen as just great musicans...

That toddler is now in his 30s and opened for Metallica this summer. The torch is passed.

The thing to remember is, this....was...his...warmup. This is how he warmed up before a performance. The original "Eruption" was recorded in the studio while everyone else was on break and he was just sitting there chilling, trying to keep his fingers warm.
Rip Eddie!!

I can't explain the joy I felt watching these four young men discovering and appreciating EVH for the first time. They get it!
Same! Every time he changes they are shocked. 😁
I appreciate how respectful these young men were, lifted my spirits.
One gripe, please put down the cell phones id rather see your expressions. Thank you
Be even better if they’d STFU during the performance
So thankful to have grown up with VH. We were the luckiest generation ever to have experienced such talent first hand.
As a child Eddie was trained as a classical pianist. So when he discovered electric guitar, he instinctively played that instrument the same way he played piano.
My thoughts exactly
That's fascinating.
From Beethoven to roll over Beethoven
He did play the piano on the Hagar Songs. Rite here right now and others
Yep you can hear Bach was a big influence. When I started listening to Bach, I was shit thats Eddies voicing. lol
He was also going so fast the cameras couldnt pick up the finger movements. It's crazy
One of my favorite guitarists besides Eddie, Michael angelo batio of nitro. his speed kills is one of my favorite technical shows from the time
@@xaphan8581 It really isnt THAT miserable.
@@armpit_farts7327 yeah and that’s how I know you don’t play. Or you just suck and you wonna hate on people who can do shut you can’t. Anyone can say their a god on guitar but unless you have video no one cares
I am 46. Eddie does the guitar solo in Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. Go have another listen to it now that you’ve heard him. His style is so recognizable.
Yes. Michael Jackson asked him to play it. After Eddie was done, he told Michael that he changed a few things. Michael said not only did he play what he wanted, but he left it better than written.
People still refuse to believe it.
Given that it was a huge hit for Michael Jackson he should have been paid for that solo. I guess he didn't invoice them. Lol!!
Steve Luthaker of Toto did the rest of the guitar ( and bass ) work on Beat It, great combo to have!!

My choices. Thats love

This made me so sad that this talented man is no longer with us. I’m so blessed I lived in his lifetime

@@fredwerza3478 no need to be disrespectful. They are all legendary in their own way
@@fredwerza3478 Terrible thing to say and a completely untrue and unnecessary comment. He may have had a rivalry with Randy but he admired and respected him, along with Jimi. You should too.
I can’t imagine the inventors of the electric guitar thought someone would take it this far.
It's fascinating that throughout history the technical inventors of instruments from violins to pianos to guitars were rarely remotely the best at using them. It takes a village.
Les Paul actually said in an interview about Eddie’s playing, “I didn’t know it could do that!”
Go Cajuns!
@david price. I got what you were saying. I appreciate it you bro. Salute.
He shreds that guitar!!! Miss him and his cute smile😊
You just witnessed pure genius ❤he was insanely talented! I was blessed to see him live in 85" l will never forget that day! R.l.P Eddie❤🤍🖤
A rock god for sure. In his early days he wouldn’t play facing the crowd because he didn’t want anyone to see his technique. He is a legend.
EVH was a freaking genius. Eddie was so iconic, ahead of his time and truly amazing. I'm thankful his music was in my lifetime and that I got to see him live. I damn near cried the day he died. One of my favorite rock bands ever.
I really am a fan of your channel, your appreciation for great music is off the charts and it's so badass to see y'all get blown away at this particular video. EVH was a THE MAN, Hendrix and him take the whole cake. Stay cool.
6:15 Just so you understand how amazing this is… this is called a competing or counter melody… basically two different players would play one or the other melody… Eddie plays them both… at the same time… on a guitar… it would be like slowing down your car and speeding up at the same time.
The intensity in their eyes as they try to take in what they're hearing and seeing. That just says it all.
I've never been one to cry a lot when someone dies other than family. I couldn't believe I cried when Eddie died. He was my all-time favorite guitarist.
Mine too. They were my first concert in '82 when I was in 7th grade and he's been my favorite ever since. I cried every day for 2 weeks after he died.
I’m 63 and have Van Halen on my Spotify playlist and crank full volume when Eruption comes on! Rock on Eddie in heaven ! This is what talent sounds like! ❤❤❤❤
I love how he makes the guitar sound like a Cello towards the end when he is playing under the blue light.
Shut up.
I agree to an extent, but Van Halen wasn’t as magical without David Lee Roth. Sammy is great, but Van Haggar couldn’t touch OG Van Halen
Why'd you make people drink flavo Aid

Is this the first ever "Rap song,"?
I absolutely love the fact that the Genexers are on here schooling the future generations about the greatest guitarist 🎸 of all time.🙏
SRV GOAT❤
All without pedals. When he was getting started he couldn’t afford pedals so he taught himself how to make all those sounds with just the guitar that other guitarists make with pedals. Simply amazing. He also played the solo on Beat It. And the “thumping” you hear during the solo, was Michael Jackson beating on an amp after walking into the studio not realizing they we recording. They left it in.
He used pedals and effects. Phase 90, Delay, Distortion, Wah....
This is coming from a man who never read one note of music in his life. He was self taught. He played every instrument. He won a piano contest for playing Beethoven in for the entire state of California not knowing who to read music. He did name his son Wolfgang after him. There have been many great Rock guitar legends, even some still living, but there will only be ONE EDDIE VAN HALEN. Heaven must have 1 Hell of a Rock Group, because we have lost a lot of greats. RIP Eddie and keep Rocking Heaven 🤘🤘🤘🤘!!! (on a side note, you guys are really awesome 😊!)
Actually, he named his son after Mozart, not Beethoven.
oh yeah, we all know the CLASSIC composer Wolfgang Amadeus Beethoven lol
@@triden1172 🤣🤣
I believe the Van Halen brothers were classically trained and could play almost any musical instrument 🎶
The sounds he is capable of creating from his guitar are beyond epic. I heard a harpsichord, a violin and bass fiddle, a piano, a space guitar...it is endless. What a loss for the music world when he left us. Thank god these videos let him live forever.
My favorite musician ever. I've always loved EVH. I'm glad you said this is the best solo ever, and I couldn't agree more. Man, those 80's concerts were the best. So much smoke haze in the room, yeah, I miss the 80's. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 His brother, in his own right, is a hell of a drummer too.
My dads uncle played guitar all his life and one of his friends ran a guitar shop, one day he got a call from the guitar shop saying there’s someone here you might want to meet, my dads uncle walked in and Eddie himself was in this little guitar shop in St. Louis! They played guitar together and Eddie said he was really good just a cool little piece of info!
And then all of the guitars stood up and clapped.
When 🎵🎵 was its best of the best
What guitar shop? I live in St. Louis...
@@b.entranceperium I’m not sure about which one sorry!
This is one of the most incredible solos I've ever seen. The imagination and skill of soloists is just fantastic.
You kids just witnessed greatness a legend! I saw this guy’s in Chicago! The best concert I’ve ever been too by far! Rip🙏Eddie VanHalen! Definitely will be missed 😢gone too soon!
@Anibal Legend+ I was lucky enough to see VH back in the 90's, when Sammy was Lead Singer. What a great concert. I just wish it wasn't so dam cold and dumping snow so hard that Sammy got on the Mic and said "You all are crazy Motherfuck@3rs to be sitting in the middle of a snow storm listening to us". LOL... Gotta love it!!!
Man I'm jealous you got to see him live!
Saw him in San Antonio, 2002 I believe.
Hey Guy's, thank you so much for sharing this, it's a trip watching you watch Eddie for the first time, it's like I got to watch it vicariously through your young eyes for the first time all over again, so thank you for that🤗!!! Eddie changed the sound of electric guitars forever, he revamped his first guitar, he did something with the pick up and made his own, unique sound 🤔...he was truly one of kind...RIP EDDIE 🤘🎸🎶🪁☔️⚾️💙
Eddie's use of classical music scales in his solo here is simply amazing. One of rock guitar's true legends.
That’s what classical training does to you as much as most modern musicians hate it.
He gifted his son, Wolfgang, that unbelievable talent. No one beats EVH on the guitar.
Wolf Van Halen is amazing!
He plays like his Father, and played every instrument on his new release.
RIP EVH
His guitar belongs in the Smithsonian!
I wish Eddie was still here and to watch Wolfgang he would be blown away for sure. R.I.P EVH ✌
Wolfgang Van Halen is possibly the coolest name in history.
Wolfgang is awesome. Chip of the old block, for sure.
What you witnessed is PURE PASSION! That man poured his heart and soul out with this solo- Much love to all of you for giving them a chance. Man music was music back then......
I really enjoy watching and listening to you guys. I love that you are open, honest, impartial and you have fun with it. Thanks for being YOU.
This is the Guitar Player that You hear on Michael Jackson's "Beat It"! LEGENDARY! RIP EVH!
Hey Guys - If you haven't done so, check out Eddie's son Wolfgang's album Mammoth WVH. Wolf is only 31, has been in the music industry his entire life and started touring with Van Halen in his mid teens. He is an extraordinary songwriter, musician, vocalist and all around wonderful human being. He did the entire album himself, every single track. He plays all the instruments and does all of the vocals. Phenomenal!
He’s amazingly talented, but seems to be a genuinely real guy, too!
Wolfe VanHalen is amazing all around musician.. craving his own path
Of course he's amazing he's Eddie's son
I saw him when VH and David lee Roth got back together and they way he play bass was amazing the concrete was shaking in the arena
Eddie always seems to be the happiest when he plays the guitar, because he is always smiling. Not bad for a guy who started out playing the drums.
RIP Eddie RIP ...the one and only EVH...saw him and Van Halen live on their 1st world tour off their 1st album in 1978... Unreal, they opened for Black Sabbath... Was totally unreal!!!
Betcha Tony paid attention 😅
@@heidecosta7834 he did but, ultimately, Eddie always had respect for the old masters... He was so grateful for the opportunity to open for and tour with BS... Eddie was always so respectful ... Look at the respect he gave Les Paul when live in front of the crowd... That's the sign of a true musician and man, there was only 1 Eddie Van Halen that's for sure!!
Oh Brian, you're so right, Eddie was a gentleman & to think he was bombed outta his mind with alcohol & SO demeaning & respectful! I meant Tony Iomi would have been trying to figure out what this "kid" was doing... I doubt Tony watched Eddie every gig.
Because I did A&R I knew a lot of famous musicians. Sammy is the truly, behind the scenes, happy. And Eddie made Everyone happy. Two gems! Rock on, thanks for answering! (I'm so excited to communicate with another rock and roller, cuz I live in the south and they just like southern rock I actually got to speak with Dave Mustaine from Megadeth 3 days ago! I'm so excited to be able to tell somebody that!

I’ve never heard this either! I totally enjoyed listening to this with you. When one of you said”he’s making the guitar sing” , DAMN, that’s exactly what he is doing!!!!
Having been in the crowd for one of his similar solo performances, (I'm 60 now) I was mesmerized. A talent the likes of Eddie will not be seen again for a long time. I see your excitement in watching the video and your appreciation was about the same I had when I saw it live. Thank you for sharing this.
I'm 64 years old. Van Halen Long Beach Arena 1978 first show after Van Halen 1 was released. They hung a giant black curtain cutting the arena in half because the band didn't know if anyone would come see them. The half left was of course sold out.
Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Prince all amazing and legendary guitarist. All gone way too soon!

Prince was the best musician to ever live
Prince doesn't belong in the conversation with Hendrix and Van Halen

Eddie Van Halen was a kind man. He was also quite humble. When Eddie died a lot of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s cried.
