I think college students should have access to the actual police dept. and not rely on campus security. This seemed so preventable! So heartbreaking 💔 Lauren had such a beautiful life ahead of her 🙏

Agreed!! It’s baffling to me why they aren’t able to rely on the city police when they literally live in the city, even though it’s on a campus. It makes no sense.

They do that for a reason. They want to keep the rampant assault and sexual assault out of the news because it might make the school look bad. Also what if a star athlete did something? This may seem cynical but I work at a major university and we get campus alerts about crime and what areas to avoid, but if you check actual city police alerts, you’ll seen none of it. If you are on a campus, call the city police first. Always.

She absolutely had rights for protection from the city. Was Melvin a student? Also, he was a resident of Salt Lake not just a student. It's disgusting how negligent they were. I would have said forget the extortion case and that you were interesting in opening up a case for harassment. Also, if this was my child I would not have left her on campus. I understand it all seems different in hindsight. It's so sad she felt she had to brave it alone in her room.

“Moderate risk offender” but he assaulted multiple minors. Nothing is “moderate” about that. I’m completely disgusted.
It’s amazing how some police officers can be so lazy and/or blatantly disinterested in a case like this until “a crime is committed” which is usually far too late-they just pass the buck and leave a person in a fearful stressful position.

It's so heartbreaking because (for the most part) Lauren did everything right. She reported every suspicious incident, she alerted friends and family of everything that was happening, she double-checked to make sure the texts she was getting weren't traps to lure her to secluded locations...and in the end her life was still taken all because POLICE didn't do their job and investigate the situation further which would have lead to his arrest since he literally was harassing her and violating multiple laws. Those detectives and others should be fired.

This infuriates me. 4 years ago, I went through a similar situation, where my ex was sending me texts saying things like "one of these days, Ill be hiding in the woods by your apartment, and when you or one of your kids walk out that front door, I'm putting a bullet in one of yalls heads" and making the same threats about waiting outside my job one night since he knew I got off work at 11pm, in a very remote location, and he knew I'd be alone. He straight up told me I'd never be able to live in this town without wondering when he was coming for me. Well, I went to the cops so many times and they said, and I quote, "We can't do anything about someone talking shit. Talking shit isn't a crime, or else we'd be arresting people left and right. If he ever acts upon it, now that's a different story."
So, I said " So, Threatening someone's life is not a crime, it's just shit talking, however, if he acts upon his words, and actually kills me, or one of my kids, THEN I can call the police and he can be arrested, right?"
    And the officer said "right."
I ended up quitting my job, and moving into a shelter for 2 years. What are women supposed to do, if law enforcement doesn't care about us, until we're actually murdered???

I went to the police station to report threats from my ex husband, and told them he'd been abusive. I told them he had an extensive gun collection and was threatening to shoot me. He also threatened to cut my brake lines. I had custody of our daughter, who was just two at the time. I told him she was almost always with me and could be injured or killed in the accident. He told me that I should have thought of that before I left him. The police did absolutely nothing no matter how many times I reported new threats. They told me that he was probably just trying to scare me. Then the friend of his new girlfriend told me that he was offering people money to kill me. When I didn't freak out, she was surprised. I told her that I wasn't at all surprised. I literally lived in fear for two years until he moved on to another woman, who later left him. She was so frightened of him that she hid out for over a year until he married another woman. I heard that she divorced him after seven years, but lost track of him after that.
Too many women, and less frequently, men, are ignored by the police when they report a fear of exes who make threats. Too many die because police don't take them seriously.

I pray 🙏🏼 they find some kind of peace. Losing someone takes a huge chunk from your heart especially your child!

One of the main issues I see here, that happens so often, is that the people who take those calls seem annoyed about their job, but if we looked at a different set of circumstances as an example, if you called a business where you wanted to buy something & you didn't really know much about the thing you wanted to buy, we would expect the person selling the thing to be educated & aware of the product, & they could lead you thru the different options. Why do so many emergency people treat victims like the victim should know all the right things to say, how to communicate the information, what order to put things into, etc? Victims are anxious, afraid, nervous, etc, they need help thru the process of reporting.

this is the first and only time in my many years of listening to true crime YTers i've had to stop a video and move on--i dealt with the exact same type of extremely dangerous university police neglect. they "kept waiting for warrants" while i was in a long-term stalking situation in on-campus apartments, the intensity going as far as to necessitate an emergency relocation after 2ish months of being a sitting duck (me, being a broke grad student at the time, went into considerable debt at this point). they could've gone and knocked on this guys door at ANY time, but i had to wait until i found out he got a job at my workplace in my off-hours (7 months after my initial report) because no one at my alma mater did their fucking jobs. this is how i found out my confidential address--i literally went into a victim's protection program run by my state's DOJ--was compromised via the university's HR system. and everything i've just described isn't even a fraction of it
i went to every office, i screamed at every person, i did EVERYTHING i needed to do, for months--there were a couple months where my days were 7-8hrs worth of email chains and meetings because of how absolutely fucked university bureaucracy is. i did everything right as a victim and i was punished for it. lauren was punished for it. i had the exact same conversation that lauren did with my city's police at least a dozen times. horrifying, horrifying. i cannot imagine the grief her family feels, but i can imagine her terror. may she rest peacefully
edit---in scrolling through these comments i'm shocked at the number of users victim-blaming lauren for her speech patterns and restraint during these calls. she was an intelligent young woman from a well-educated family, and knew that "rocking the boat" would have worked against her when trying to wade through the mess that is university bureaucracy.

Good God Man!! Lauren seems to have done absolutely everything she could. She reached out for help, she followed it up, she reached out to off campus police who told her to contact campus police AGAIN. I really feel for her family. thank you for talking about lauren and keeping her name and memory alive. i played soccer at the university of utah while she was there running for the school as a student athlete as well. and what happened to her absolutely changed the dynamic of not only the university of utah’s athletics, but the university of utah as a whole. i still remember exactly where i was and what i was doing that night on campus, i was only down the street from this horrible incident when it took place. it still makes me sick to think of how she was ignored and never taken seriously. i also went to the bar that monster worked at several times with my friends, and that truly makes me nauseous to even think about. it almost feels like the university of utah athletic department is plagued with unthinkable and heartbreaking tragedies, as we then had the sudden deaths of ty and aaron, two football players that passed away recently (2020 and 2021) due to heartbreaking circumstances. i have since graduated and moved back to my home state, but when i go back to visit my college home and athletic family in salt lake city, i still see lauren (and ty and aaron) everywhere i go. the university of utah athletes will always carry this with us. may she forever rest in peace

Prayers for Lauren’s family and friends… she was so blessed to have so many wonderful people who loved and cared for her. Her friends did an amazing job looking out for her and I have to commend them for that!
This was truly shocking! I am disgusted how the university handled this….they literally couldn’t have done less because they did nothing at all! They should be ashamed! This coward never should’ve been able to continue harassing her… If campus police truly LISTENED and heard how horrifying her situation was, they would know this man was lying about who he was and was a registered offender!!! They either didn’t believe her or didn’t want to do their job and that’s a load of 💩!
Good on Lauren for sensing something was off and researching him on google! I can’t imagine what a blow to the stomach that was for her….realizing this man she had been dating was not at all who he said he was. That’s terrifying!

This is so heartbreaking. I really relate to Lauren - I was stalked and harassed in 2011 by the ex of my boyfriend at the time. She was making death threats, calling my job and making false complaints, and had someone watching my apartment building. Whenever I got home I would get a text from an unknown number saying "I see you just got home. Be careful" or something similar. It was even worse for my ex - she was calling him over a hundred times a day, harassing his parents - every time we blocked her number she would get a new one. What made it scarier was that she had been in prison for four years for aiding and abetting murder.
We went to the police SO MANY times. Eventually got an AVO (restraining order) granted - it didn't matter. She kept breaching it. I remember one day crying and asking the cop I had reported the breach to 'isn't there something you can do? Anything??' I'll always remember the answer - "we can't do anything until she physically harms you".
I said "if she physically harms me, I will be dead." They had no answer for that.
My stalker died a year later from a heroin overdose. Until the day she died, I did not feel safe anywhere. I was always looking over my shoulder, worried she would find me one day.

I thought the same thing. I don't really think it's an age thing cuz I mean she was a senior in college, not that that doesn't mean people can't talk fluently, but I think she was obviously scared and stressed out by the situation. I wish that maybe some other people might have called as well. Maybe made more reports on her behalf. When you're in a situation like that I think that it's easy to be overwhelmed and not be the most eloquent with your words. That's like if you listen to 911 calls sometimes people get frustrated because people are panicking and not telling the dispatcher what they need to know. It's easy to distance yourself from a situation when you haven't been in it but I do wish that maybe more people would have reported as well. And those were also just a few of the phone calls that we heard she called more than 20 times so we're not sure how she spoke on the other ones. But either way it's just awful. For the campus police to not even know how to do a background check is just appalling. How do you not know how to do your own job? Probably one of the simpler aspects of it as well

Thank you for giving Lauren and her story the respect she deserved. I can't believe the statements that the University made afterward. The world lost a part of it's future when Lauren lost her life. So sad.

Poor Lauren she seemed like a really sweet person and definitely didn't deserve this. The police really failed her on every level.

Cases like this really show you, sometimes it’s not enough to keep trying, you have to be adamant, a pain in the ass, refuse to take no action as an answer. It really sucks you have to advocate for yourself so hard for people like POLICE to do their job, but please! Ladies promise me …if you think you’re in trouble don’t worry about ruffling feathers or being “hysterical “ be the squeaky wheel! Call them 10 times in one day! Or if you’re super uncomfortable with that then find that friend that’s always the one to call the waitress back, or tell the nail tech they screwed up their nails and have them advocate like the Karen they know they can be! It shouldn’t be that way, but so be it!

the problem is when you are proactive as a victim in situations of intense institutional neglect, especially with universities--you get even more ignored for being a "problem" case because of legal/liability issues, your case "falls through the cracks", or "we decided to take this line of investigation" etc. people genuinely do not understand how absolutely impossible to understand these types of situations are until you're in them

That gut feeling that a crazy ex is going to hurt you… they probably will. Mine did and he gets out of jail soon so I will unfortunately be in this position of fear and anxiety. Things like this happen all too often unfortunately.

Thank You Rachel for doing a excellent job on covering this story. I would like to keep my negative comments to myself about the situation. It just pissed me off about about our public services and supposed to be protectors. But, Kudos to you for doing magnificent on coverage on this story.

The University claimed it wasn't their responsibility to protect her because he wasn't a student, but the cops said it wasn't their responsibility because it was happening on campus? If someone had done their job she 100% would be alive today. So gross and sad that her case was "handled" this way. And the cop that stole her photos is so disgusting and depraved.

Lauren was so beautiful, brave and smart! I cannot believe all of the adults in positions of power that were more interested in passing the buck than actually listening to her and all of her friends that were worried! Something as simple as performing a 5 min google search could have revealed that he had a criminal record, could not carry a gun, and maybe that he was on parole so reporting his behavior scary stalker behavior could have had him arrested for carrying a gun and threatening lauren and possibly saved her life!!! so heartbreaking.

The issue was that this was under the jurisdiction of the college who would not report it to the police. When she tried to report it to the police they referred her to the college. The college failed to even look him up for 5 min. If they had they would have seen there was a warrant for his arrest and could have taken action to have him arrested and possibly save her life.

Or sorry he was on parole and so was violating his parole by stalking her and could have been arrested. Adults was referring to the non college students that were in a position to supposedly do their jobs and help her when she constantly asked for it and did everything she was supposed to do to try and get help.

The fact that Lauren was paying to go to school there should have been enough reason for the campus police to investigate further. They are in charge of keeping the campus safe.

Campuses can not police themselves. I'm very impressed with your video, and how you handled it. I don't think I would be able to be so controlled in the telling of it. The campus police failed her, but the fact that city police weren't interested infuriates me also. Hopefully the knowledge they gained will prevent another death.

Every single time I've tried to go to the police for help it's been turned around on me. Lemme tell a crazy ass story. I was traveling a few years ago and was in a very sketchy area that I had been warned was known for sex trafficking. Without going into full detail bc it would be too long, I stupidly trusted the wrong people at a sketchy motel and was almost trafficked I believe. I got away and got into a restaurant next to the motel and the guy following me tried to force me to come with him back out into the parking lot saying if I didn't get into a car across the parking lot he would be killed. A worker called the police, but when they took him outside to talk to him he told them that I was his girlfriend and a drug addict and prostitute and if they didn't make me go with him i would be back out on the streets hooking. These mf cops believed him. This was in a state where prostitution puts you on the sex offender registry. These cops spent the entire time trying to get me to admit to being a prostitute (I was not and have never been one) saying they would help me get out of my situation if I would just tell them the truth. They refused to believe me even when I showed them proof that I live across the country and was just visiting. They told me that they couldn't just let me leave on my own based on what my "boyfriend" told them for my apparent "safety" so if i didn't want to admit to being a prostitute and come with them, I would have to go with him if I can't find someone else to come get me. Luckily I was in that state visiting a friend and I managed to get in contact with them to come get me. This was one of the biggest mind fucks of my life and not only can I not believe that I was almost literally trafficked, but the cops did everything they could to make the situation worse.
Another time, I reported a rape and the cop turned around and started investigating me for prostitution instead. Even showed up to my sisters house to ask her about whether or not she knew for sure that I wasn't. I have no idea why I was twice accused of this by cops supposed to help me, I wonder if it's really that common or if I give off that vibe. So anyway. I will never trust the police again.

That call with the phone operator was so awkward and frustrating that she couldn't quite get it out and wasn't able to express or convince the operator of the gravity of the situation and that she really believed 'they' the 'friends' were actually him! 🥺
