Serrated point with this aspect is kind of broken as the 3 hits on the dash attack only use one of the charges from the special, resulting in 12 instances of the 150% extra damage instead of 4.
20:20 i almost always run mom pom, and for me i think it's a full run commitment trinket you either take from the house to the surface or dont take at all, like plume or butterfly. Late in a run its randomly spreading levels across the build and basically achieving nothing, but as your starting trinket it's dumping levels into your initial attack or special boon, by the end of asphodel you'll have like level 5 on your primary damage boon. This also means getting to skip 100% of pom rooms you see because you already have enough levels where it matters to hit the point of diminishing returns, which means more boons and money instead, which in turn means strengthening your build every shop even more. By allowing you to skip every pom, it eliminates a huge amount of opportunity cost If you wait till you already have a strong build to throw it on late game, it's basically useless because it spreads so thin. If you take it in tartarus where it only has 1 or 2 boons to target, then it just cranks levels into the most important tools in your build. When you hit the point where it spreads too thin, you can always swap it out for acorn or tooth at the end of the run, its not like you really need them in tartarus or asphodel anywsy
I don't tend to need acorn or tooth, so I add pom blossom simply because bigger number. It's also way better than it might seem in styx, since it's every individual chamber rather than every reward.
My favorite thing to do with Achilles spear is Demeter cast. Unlike Ares, you don't *need* a duo boon to unlock the full potential of the weapon, it's generally pretty easy to just special+cast x3 in a way that the beams are on the boss for most of their duration. Plus the auto aim means they can chew through lernie eggs and hades casts, meaning you have a lot more leeway and crowd control than most single target builds
Tbh if I'm running Demeter Cast, I'd rather use Poseidon Sword so I don't have to go through the extra button presses. Also, you definitely need Crystal Clarity to unlock its full potential. Otherwise, it just tracks too slowly.
By far my favorite/most successful build as someone who struggles with positioning/mobility. Being able to drop down casts then use special as well as dashes for mobility is a godsend.
it’s really hard to get all the right boons but demeter cast with the other mirror cast ability is sooo fun. you want to put most of your poms into glacial glare and at least 1 extra cast and you can get like 10 lasers going. i prefer artemis duo but the extra time with aphrodite duo is also really fun

Then got the "attacks summon homing arrows" from artemis, attacks deflect from athena, and then finally some dash buffs from ares and hermes, I was absolutely zooming around releasing a storm of damage and that run alone helped convince me of the fact that spear is amazing. Unfortunately I died cause I'm bad but it was fun af ngl.
Guan yu is just awesome with athena attack. Charge it then dodge and the spin attack will automatically come out and also move a little bit further then shooting it from standing. Not to mention dodging into the attack is a really good way of avoiding damage. Did heat 32 for a day, frustrated, then I put this build on and it was the easiest run i ever had no joke
A couple questions: 1. It was a bit hard to see in the video but is the strategy here to use the special just enough to keep the bonus from it up and attack the rest of the time? 2. Could you do/have you done something similar to this for the Hestia rail? It's one of the only aspects I've never quite been able to get a lot of value out of.
To question 1: yep pretty much! Keep in mind that doing the rush again after only 3 attacks does not reset it. So have a rough counter in your head of how many attacks/casts you’ve done and then throw the special when it reaches 4 (or when the glowing particles around zag go away).
For Hestia, you go for a build that makes your Attack as strong as possible so your Empowered Shot can just kinda one or two shot things I believe you'd want to get Artemis for the Attack so your empowered shot can crit, more Artemis boons for crits, throw in Aphrodite to get Heart Rend duo, or maybe vice versa like getting an epic Aphrodite boon for your Attack since her boons give crazy damage bonuses for some reason lol (power of love i guess) maybe get Poseidon's Dash, and a good cast you can rely on for hammers you'd want Ricochet Fire and Targeting System, for keepsake go Pierced Butterfly because you should be able to keep your distance, and safely 1-3 shot enemies and get that passive bonus to your damage for each room you clear perfectly for your call probably Athena to make yourself invulnerable and yeah profit
1. I'd say that I wouldn't even worry TOO much about keeping the special bonus up, try to get into a rhythm where you refresh it regularly but it doesn't necessarily need 100% up time. One important thing: if you use SOME of the buff and then try to refresh it, it won't work. i.e. If you use 3 out of 4 of the bonus attacks, then use the special, you'll still only have 1 bonus left. 2. I could! The only real advice there might be to make sure that A. the Reload button is on something easy to use/reach and B. controller auto aim helps a TON.

Same!!! I still haven’t beaten the game but the spear has been my favorite weapon thus far. Now that I’m learning more about the builds you can achieve with the boon combos I’m excited to go ham on Daddy Hades.
My fave is zags twin fists that give +15% dodge chance, lambert plumb which increases dodge chance permanently every time you clear a room fast and the single dash that gives a 50% dodge chance after a dash, you can legit get like 98% -100% dodge chance the only downside of it is poison
This is interesting although I'd be curious to see it without Flurry Jabs, since you can't guarantee specific hammers and it takes over the build so much. I feel like with the base spear it'd play similar, you're just losing the damage boost after the specials. I haven't liked Achilles spear much because sometimes the special carries you into danger if you overthrow it, but the power of this build is undeniable. Maybe I'll give it another shot.
Just finished all the achievements last night. You have been invaluable in showing off what builds work and don’t work. I still haven’t completed a boonless run tho 😢
@@SifArtorias Hestia Rail with shackle was my build haha. I think I was doing it with one Forced Overtime and it made the dad fight too hard lol. I think I had bad hammers too, so that definitely didn’t help. I can probably do it now, but I remember I got to Styx and got a 4 sack, forcing me to take a boon, so that kinda killed the run on its own.
I got mine with Arthur Sword. The Hallowed Ground really helps with the defense. Double Edge + Double Nova imo really carried me through the game. I got lucky with an anvil at Styx and got Shadow Slash and Hoarding Slash in exchange for Double Nova. It’s really easy to build up cash throughout the game mainly due to the fact that you’ll end up getting a massive amount of money through boon selling and re-rolling rooms to not get a boon. If you wanna do high-ish heat, Underworld Customs is basically necessary. If you have any other questions, I’d be more than happy to help. Also, one tip with the anvil that you might want to know is saving your game, buying the hammer and if you get something that you don’t like, quit your game when the Quit Game button on the main menu lets you quit out. Don’t go into another chamber before that, though because that makes the anvil permanent. But if you get something you don’t like, do another Styx tunnel and buy the anvil again. From my testing, as long as you don’t buy the anvil at the start (before doing any tunnels), this lets you reroll your anvil choices up to 5 times. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Hi Haelian, I’m sort of an alright player, (cleared every weapon at heat 16, PR is 11:54 with the spear at heat 22), and honestly my favorite weapon is the Achilles spear with a dash-strike build. Serrated Point + Flurry Jab lets me easily shred through everything and if I get Hyper Sprint along with Hermes keepsake (which is the one i use all the time for high-heat runs when I’m running tight deadline 3), the -25% dash range is honestly compensated for. I try and get something that’ll buff up my attack, like Aphro attack, Hunter Dash, and a bunch of Chaos boons for dash strikes or attack, and not regularly use the cast all that much. What are your thoughts on this playstyle as a really experienced player? I personally just never got the hang of a cast build as a PC player, so do you also have any tips for that? Thanks in advance, love the content! Keep it up!
Not sure if this is helpful but if you primarily play K+M, try playing with a controller. Cast builds feel really natural with a controller. I can't imagine having to aim every cast with my cursor.
@@appleplease64 I have a controller, though because I try to play in school where I can’t bring a controller, I got accustomed to K+M more. Thanks for the suggestion though!
As long as you're having fun, tis a fine way to play. I find Serrated Point challenging to use myself. It's true that a controller will help aim casts better but a lot of the cast builds don't really require it (i.e. Crystal Beam). Most cast builds rely on at least 1 duo boon to really break through so I can see why they seem underwhelming at first, just peek at which duos you'd want ahead of time and use the god keepsakes to help get them.
@@Haelian Serrated Point is one of the hammers I'm most torn on. You can do stupid amounts of damage with it, but I've found that the shortened dash almost always ends up hurting me during the Dad fight.
Just picked up the game. Beat it with fists and shield, but each took a while. Just watched this and got the right weapon upgrade, beat the game with no revives, never done that before…thanks!
I'm a gauntlet user. Aspect of Talos with long knuckle, Hermes for attack speed/dodges, Artemis for her deflect boons and the life steal on attack curse/boon (forget who gave it to me). Did my first successful run with that as a base for my build.
21:50 Personally, I mainly like to use the Pom Blossom because it makes me feel like I'm getting from Poms, and don't need to go into the Pom rooms. I don't really think it's all that powerful necessarily, it just feels like it lets me ignore a few more things.
My most favorite aspect when I get flurry jab. But my least favorite without it (even though it's still strong with a cast build without flurry jab lol). Flurry jab makes the run with the Achilles spear so much more easy and fun.
About 10:00 minutes in he says about the weapons, which I should state I only reached about 10 Heat on all weapons, then jumped to 16 for the Platinum trophy. I didn't try all the aspects, like I had no idea about the Zeus aspect on the shield until seeing videos online. So I'm very casual and by no means a pro However the spear was one of my favourite/safe weapons! I really struggled with the bow unless I got rapid attack, the sword and gloves I could struggle with the lack of range (though the magnet attack could help a bit), and the gun I struggled with not pausing enemies so especially the rats, satyrs, and crystal thingies, I could just be an open target for damage. However the shield and spear, primarily the spear, I found the balance of long and short range attacks, and just the hammer upgrades you get to be so incredibly good Like as this video shows, rapid attack on the spear is just incredibly busted, but then that boon that lets the special hit several targets, that can clear rooms and be a safe way to attack if you are low on health! Then yeah, if you get boons that work in your favour adding it all together you can just blitz through runs! Like my quickest run was around 6 Heat with the spear, and it was about 19 minutes. I'm sure if I kept playing more, increasing Heat, and tried all the aspects my view my shift towards something like the Aspect of Zeus, but yeah, as a kinda casual player, the spear was by far my favourite and best weapon!
Again, just as a total casual haha I actually loved Persephone's Keepsake, after I maxed out all Keepsakes and was just doing ruins for trophies/resources, I would equip it until the room before Styx. But if you got unlucky/selective it can help so much! Like I think one time, Aphrodite gave me an Epic weak attack boon as the first boon I received in the first room, then Persephone levelled it up to 5 or 6 just by the Keepsake, so my damage output racked up really fast without me really doing anything!
I really like getting poseidon boons on the special with achilles spear cuz it knocks enemies back into the perfect range to dash to the spear and then dash strike the enemy then getting dash strike increase is nice of course. Not the best admittedly but a pretty fun combo to do and it’s easy to play safe for casual runs.
me and my brother were talking about new york rats, and we were watching this video on our tv. When the cat came on screen i thought it was a 20 inch rat crawling on the tv, and I almost cried. P.s. i haven't slept in days
I just started the game last night. Within 1 hour, I beat Meg and almost beat second biome. This was using the spear with Zeus lightning effects along with ares insta explosion skill. That was super OP. Probably could have beat 2nd biome if it wasnt 3am lol.
No no... it makes sense. Persephone's Keepsake is either barely there, or randomly awesome, but not reliable. So you don't take it in edge cases because there's better options. Also... THAT is why I don't take the Aphrodite punishment for dual boon rooms. Her attack effect is NASTY, and causes more damage than most. Same goes for Poseidon.
I think it said robbed thanatos because you literally didn't let him get a single kill lmao. Not even lying, you got 31 kills, he got absolutely nothing, literally robbed lol
Hey Haelian, thanks for the great video! I really like Achilles spear as well, great aspect. I've been wondering, what would the best cast build be like in your opinion?
On Achilles the best cast that’s reasonably consistent is probably hunting blades (ares blade rifts + ares and Artemis duo). The rifts are incredibly powerful and do damage very quickly, plus they don’t lodge in enemies so you can pick up your cast stones very quickly. But that’s just IMO, people like lots of different things.
The best for a casual run is either Crystal Beam or Slicing Shot. Both are really strong as long as you get Crystal Clarity or Hunting Blades respectively.
I had a run where I focused on the spear's special after I started with an explosive throw. Was very fun. And the nipples being free is only relevant information if you're female lol.
Varatha, the best weapon in the game. I love Aspect of Achilles but it has one fatal flaw of being exposed at the end of an attack, and getting flurry jab right at the start of the run is a guaranteed win. My record is a little over 22 minutes with Varatha its def an S tier weapon
I like serrated point as an alternative to flurry jab. I know it's trash in speedrunning because of the decrease in dash distance, but you can create some fun builds around it
I just started the game and I'm at the point where I unlocked the aspects. Are there any boons that are detrimental to my build and should always avoid? I honestly just wing it every time, and I know these games always have some dedicated way of playing them that I can't just finish learning.
i just got the game so i dont mean to give a noob take, but extended spear with augments like doom is so fun and artemis support arrows, you get to poke from a screen away while consistently applying debuffs
Try the Chiron bow (2nd) one. It's my favourite since your special homes to the enemy after using your attack. With the right build you can absolutely delete the bosses
Would you consider making videos to help people new to the game? I've got a couple of aspects, a little bit of darkness in all of the mirror upgrades, I can't even call Meg yet to deal damage for me lmao, and I just beat the game once with a single heat for the first time haha. Any tips specifically for a newbie like me?
hi!! Nice video. I just escaped for the first time today and I used the gun as a weapon. My build was athena and demetra (low dmg but I was basically unkillable). What do you think would be the best build for the gun?
Im stopping this 3 minutes in to go try Flurry jab because you just made me realize I an just hold my mouse button and itl do extra attacks between my dashes
do you have any tips on how to beat hades with this spear in particular? because i’m having trouble beating him with it and i would really like to improve
Getting aphrodite's special and artemis's attack work really well together if you get the heart rend duo boon. Or you get get a rare or epic zeus attack with the flurry jab hammer if getting the duo boon is too hard.
I know I'm watching this late, but I'm relatively new to Hades and haven't beaten the game yet. I used the Titan's blood I have to upgrade the bow to Chiron, but do you have any hints for a new player to finally beat the game?
Any reason you're not a fan of athena's cast with Achilles? Ive had a lot of fun runs throwing out kamikaze ufos and they seem to do good chunky damage. And if you get the boon that causes the ufos to bounce it seems to really clear rooms quickly.
Hey Hael. Any advice for beeating the game first run? I've gotten as far as a few hits off of Theseus fight but haven't even gotten last biome yet and I've been running a while. Generally I run Ares Q, Dionysus DoT on attack, trying to get 2%crit+ mark and athena cast on the side and stacking as much hp as I can.
I just got this game like 3 days ago and absolutely am falling in love with this game Werth every penny glad I found your channel you wer onistly my deciding factor on if I bot it now or whatever for a sail amazing game and the spear is my most favorite wepon to use in the game based of the dps and viability alone
I got hades yesterday bletated birthday gift from friends and I've only gotten to hydra I have all weapons and I have god mode on 50% I think. Any tips on what I should do to get past hades or at least to beat hydra so I can get the diamond
Hey @Haelian Question: Is there a combo that is pretty good but requires an insane amount of luck? So much so that the luck required makes the build a little bad/gimmicky.
Hmm Merciful End is a little like that because of the inconsistency. Probably the famous "super soaker" build that requires Poseidon's attack with a rail aspect, incredibly bad without Seastorm and a bunch of other Zeus boons. Good fun when it does work though.
I'd like to mention the Hunting Blades build. And Crystal Clarity, too. They are heavily luck-based. Overpowered if you get the Artemis duo boon, useless if you don't.
@@zach.hanfordAmen, I feel the same way. Most of the time I feel like after I pick up blades Ares just completely disappears for most of the run and I can't flesh them out.
Hi! I see often in more advanced runs that players don't pick up crystals after boss fight. Why is that? I just begin my adventure with Hades and have never achieve surface yet so I am just curious
Why choose the coin purse over pom blossom or some other passive perma-buff trinkets? Because you have to purge a boon at the end of a region and want to spend money at midshop?
Part of the reason yes. Pom Blossom feels like you gotta keep it on for a long time to really get the value out of it which limits your flexibility to use a defensive keepsake later on. Generally, Charon's keepsake is better to get large Attack/Special/Cast buffs over a random pom here or there.
For some reason achilles is my least favorite aspect (and hades is my favorite.) idk why, i get all the obvious pros, but its just not fun to play for me. In general im not a big fan of throwing the spear or of the ranged weapons in general. I play on a desktop so maybe that matters? Is it more fun to use with a gamepad? Anyway interesting to see how different people like to play
how do you build chaos shield? i havent had any success with special builds on shield (ive only been playing for llike 2 weeks) edit: chaos aspect chaos shield :D
I really don’t understand why would anyone ever sell boons? It’s not a crazy amount of money you get and no boon is exclusively BAD So what’s the point?? Get some extra money for a CHANCE to get a better boon? I’ve looked it up and I can’t find an answer that makes sense. Can someone help?
The trophies in hades aren't super hard to get but they are a bit grindy. I would recommend experimenting with different keepsakes to get them all to level 3 because that could take a long time if you only used a few of them throughout the game. Keeping your nectars instead of trading them is also a good investment since you need to get those friendship points up.
Simultaneously my favorite and least favorite aspect for speed running, and flurry jab is the reasoning for both.
It’s funny cause it’s broken but so annoying to get
@devaryamadhukar8803 I was able to get flurry jab 3 times in a 3 streak run, sometimes you can get really lucky if the fates are kind

Good luck!
Somehow I just got the Achilles spear upgrade today and immediately got this in my recommended. UA-cam Knows.
I, for one, welcome our new, free-nippled overlord.
"The oar smack deals a lot more damage as well"
*4 perfectly timed ahhhp, whup, yeaup, whup*
Oars: "I heard my name....."
So I'm very casual and by no means a pro
However the spear was one of my favourite/safe weapons! I really struggled with the bow unless I got rapid attack, the sword and gloves I could struggle with the lack of range (though the magnet attack could help a bit), and the gun I struggled with not pausing enemies so especially the rats, satyrs, and crystal thingies, I could just be an open target for damage. However the shield and spear, primarily the spear, I found the balance of long and short range attacks, and just the hammer upgrades you get to be so incredibly good
Like as this video shows, rapid attack on the spear is just incredibly busted, but then that boon that lets the special hit several targets, that can clear rooms and be a safe way to attack if you are low on health!
Again, just as a total casual haha
I actually loved Persephone's Keepsake, after I maxed out all Keepsakes and was just doing ruins for trophies/resources, I would equip it until the room before Styx.
It has always confused why Aspect of Poseidon isnt on spear. It could literally be a trident.
12:10 thank you for the nipple update
me and my brother were talking about new york rats, and we were watching this video on our tv. When the cat came on screen i thought it was a 20 inch rat crawling on the tv, and I almost cried.
P.s. i haven't slept in days
triple jab + athena attack deflect = insane (u basically deflect everything that comes near u)
@@sajanramanathan Easy to combine with mirage shot as well as you already have artemis for hunting blades
The best for a casual run is either Crystal Beam or Slicing Shot. Both are really strong as long as you get Crystal Clarity or Hunting Blades respectively.
@@Mattkael Is good
I had a run where I focused on the spear's special after I started with an explosive throw. Was very fun.
And the nipples being free is only relevant information if you're female lol.
15:16 how do you refresh the boons ? i got the talent from the night mirror but it only refreshes the chamber entrance boon
Keep playing, it will unlock from Nyx later.
I know it's trash in speedrunning because of the decrease in dash distance, but you can create some fun builds around it
34:42 what is that mark on the blessings and what is it's use
flurry jab + triple jab + attack deflect is insane
Got my pr(9:30) with it when I least expected it !
i love flurry jab with poseidon attack and the zeus duo boon
Flurry jab is what I got first time beating it. And I didn't feel like I should count it because it was so easy
He has a similar video:
ua-cam.com/video/bY42CJs159Q/v-deo.html
Using these builds helped me out a lot in beating the game for the first few times.
@@dutchdanderdinde6450 interesting, thanks :D
@@justarandomdood you are very welcome, jawless paul has also a lot of good guide videos for hades.
hi!! Nice video. I just escaped for the first time today and I used the gun as a weapon. My build was athena and demetra (low dmg but I was basically unkillable). What do you think would be the best build for the gun?
just some notes, dont mind me
- zeus cast
- aphrodite's call
- artemis special?
Hey mate,
Great content, i love it !
I don’t get one thing you explained : why do you pause ?
Thanks very much
It's a habit from speedrunning: it pauses the in game timer.
1:16 Not seen this boss. Need a source on how to beat. Looks impossible.
I've been using mouse and keyboard for a while but I've been recommended a controller forever now
What bindings do you recommend for the controller?
When is fighting Charon a good choice?
(EDIT: Esp in Tartarus.)
when you need the money and have atleast 5 death defiances in my case
Probably never realistically.
Pretty sure people have only really done it using Merciful End: Ares attack, Athena special, Athena dash. Only way to get a decent amount of damage.
@@Haelian Thanks. I will be sure to try it. I never had it before because I didn't go for the weak Athena attacks/specials.
How did he get the upgrades for the spear? I’m still pretty new and have only just got it for the shield
Do you have a build for the fist? There my favorite and im new so i rly dont know what im doing
@@genxer1824 I can't even tell you the amount of times I've had everything in place for a Hunting Blades build, and then never got it.
Eventually you don't need them, that's all. You have to pick up the other reward to open the door though.
@@Haelian cheers 😀
The spear is quite literally my favorite weapon in the game
What builds do you go for if you don’t find flurry jab?
What if I cant find Flurry Jab ? Is there a way to make sure I have this Hammer ?
For some reason achilles is my least favorite aspect (and hades is my favorite.) idk why, i get all the obvious pros, but its just not fun to play for me. In general im not a big fan of throwing the spear or of the ranged weapons in general. I play on a desktop so maybe that matters? Is it more fun to use with a gamepad? Anyway interesting to see how different people like to play
I just finished it! First meeting with Hades, he got speared to death!
Is this the build i should always go for with achilles spear?
Achilles spear my beloved
how do you build chaos shield? i havent had any success with special builds on shield (ive only been playing for llike 2 weeks)
edit: chaos aspect chaos shield :D
Zeus or Dio on special work really well.
Aphrodite's cast is especially WEAK, you say? I see what you did there 😏
ugh
I really don’t understand why would anyone ever sell boons?
It’s not a crazy amount of money you get and no boon is exclusively BAD
So what’s the point??
Get some extra money for a CHANCE to get a better boon?
I’ve looked it up and I can’t find an answer that makes sense. Can someone help?
I recently finished my first run, i got flurry jab, AB hits 3 times and massive AB damage boosts. I didht know i got god combo till i watched this 😂
is there any merit for some achilles spear hunting blades build?
Tis the only way to play Hunting Blades
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?!
how do you start with the hammer? Luck or there's a way?
25% chance
My favorite weapon. (I love you too Blitz Disc)
Same lol
I like the spear the most but I cleared using the Aegis because of the block ability
Basic tips for trophy hunting this game ?
The trophies in hades aren't super hard to get but they are a bit grindy.
I would recommend experimenting with different keepsakes to get them all to level 3 because that could take a long time if you only used a few of them throughout the game.
Keeping your nectars instead of trading them is also a good investment since you need to get those friendship points up.
