1:15 don't forget about Dying Fetus. They have a HUGE following not only in the death metal but also in the hardcore and deathcore scene because everyone loves the groove, the vocals and breakdowns
Im 45, been a Metalhead since high school, Metalhead for life! Its no phase, its a lifestyle. All that being said, I never really was hugely into Death Metal until fairly recently. It really does seem to have been resurging, even taking the Metal throne. Metalcore and other forms of Metal just seem to have dropped a bit lately, quality wise, and left it open for Death Metal to take the lead. The heaviest, most interesting bands around right now are pretty much all Death Metal, and im LOVING IT!
One of my favourite bands, Spinebreaker, is from my hometown and are comprised of members from Gulch, Sunami, and Ripped to Shreds. They've gotten more into a death metal direction but their 2016 album was a mix between hardcore and death metal, and their guitar tone has that classic, filthy Swedish buzzsaw sound. Last year, I went to their show and the whole pit was a mix between moshing and hardcore dancing. That shit was beautiful.
death metal renaissance started around 2008 then really kicked in around 2010 with an entire young generation flocking to once very underground bands like Autopsy, Sadistic Intent as well as newfound interest in the bigger known classic bands, it seems the streak hasn't broken since then (I've been into death metal since the early 90s)
I'm sixty yrs. old and Tombstoner rocks! Great interview, Jon. Edit #1: Motorhead-Overkill record slays. Side b is some of their best ever, imo. Limb from Limb rips. Damage Case also. Edit #2: come another four hundy miles west to Omaha, guys.
my favorite recent band has been Vitriol, they make some sound i've never heard before and theyr'e all killer musicians. Nithing's new album was also pushing the boundaries of what music is.
4:25 If it was up to me the lineups would be totally mixed. Thrash metal, deathcore, power metal, black metal, grindcore .. shows would be so much more exciting. It gets boring when you listen to 4 black metal bands back to back. I love myself some variety
I’m from S.I where these guys from and play the same local scene. These guys are awesome & they rip. My band Silkstone played a show with their other band crossover thrash band Gamma Ghouls. Great guys
@@Lupine. No shit, sherlock that the sky is blue, maybe learn how to use proper words when you're typing sentences, Bruh. You said old school STUFF instead of style in your first comment.
I'm not really sure if those guys answered the question of why Death Metal is becoming so popular now, lol. Great interview though 😎 Ya, there are so many great Death Metal bands right now, especially with a few of the sub-genres like Tech Death, Melodic Death Metal and my personal favorite, Blackened Death Metal😎🤘🍻
The one good thing coming out of the lock downs from the cough was all the youngsters picking up instruments to kill the time productively and erupting out into the scene like eager beavers.
I think its the same reason as black metal. People are looking for something more aggressive and extreme. Like with the economic and political situation, its a great way to cope with it
I'm 44 and got into Hardcore in the early 90s. I'll be honest, most of the 90s Death Metal is pretty boring to me outside of Death. If it wasn't for the pummeling breakdowns in bands like Dying Fetus, Frozen Soul, and 200 Stab Wounds, I'd probably still think Death Metal is boring. Hardcore is more exciting to watch. Death Metal is usually a little more polished. Combine both of those and it's pure heaven to me.
If you like the breakdowns parts of death metal, why not get into the brutal death/slam scene when slam riffs are similar to breakdowns anyways lol Look up a band called Hacked Up. They're dope
Please tell me that Disturbed comment was not true. I'm hoping. I CANNOT stand that band. It's on the same level as Taylor Swift and Limp Bizkit to me. You should never admit to that again. 🤣🤣🤣

Df playing a lot of hc festivals fair play

Beautiful!! 🤘🤘
Shoutout to Gulch, mixing hardcore punk with slight death metal riffs

I saw Behemoth with Arch Enemy, Napalm Death, and Unto Others. That was awesome. Black metal, melo death, grind, Goth 😆🤘🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophy Man what a lineup. I wish I was there too. Btw, the new Unto Others song "Raigeki" is so catchy and fresh I love it

Love seeing old school stuff like Gatecreeper popping up again.
Yes!! 🤘🤘
Gatecreeper isn't old.

It's old school style, guy
@@Lupine. No shit, sherlock that the sky is blue, maybe learn how to use proper words when you're typing sentences, Bruh. You said old school STUFF instead of style in your first comment.
@@charnelveil669 Not old. Old-school. Their latest record had a lot of trad metal influence on the guitars.
have you heard of knoll? it's kind of a combination of grindcore, mathcore, black metal, death metal. they're pretty sick.

I guess it is rising because great deathmetal and great Hardcore is hard to beat. Deathmetal/hardcore combined has always been awesome 😁

@@heavymetalphilosophy I'm huge into the underground scene. Bands like Mourning Veil are amazing 🍻😎🤘
The reason death metal is becoming so popular right now is because the metal Labeled death is making rounds of popular variety.
Tribal gaze the heaviest

Slamming Beatdown got me into Slamming Brutal Death and then i discovered Technical Brutal Death, some of the least boring music i ever came across
Death metal & hardcore together ends up being grind, slam and Suffocation. 😊
these guys are hilarious and the music fuckin rips

Oh no. Do I want to search for this?
@@heavymetalphilosophy Yes you do. Pretty sure its on first LP from 2015 Black Crusades.
Warning... it's bad.... but so bad it's good again lol.
