Good and interesting description of these interesting musical wierdos.
St. Anger isn't bad musically. It's just Lars being a terrible drummer and "producer" lol. I still can't get over the snare, either lol.
It's tough. I hope to hear All Within My Hands live this year... SNARE ON!
@@heavymetalphilosophy 🤣
I don't mind the lyrics. I like the art behind it being like a horror movie. The songs I write mix the two lol I'm not in a band but I do it for my own amusement.
Black metal. The instruments in death metal are so low you can't really hear it that loud like you do in black metal and a lot of black metal songs have the kind of riffs and solos similar to the old thrash metal. I like both though.
I like both too 😁🤘🤘
great video, I have some disagreements, but overall you make the same points that I would make. I think a white rapper trying to sound black is not something that should be encouraged. The one of the only things that I ever liked about Eminem was that he went out of his way to sound white. I always found that very dignified. El-P is a New York emcee PERIOD, he is so legit that he deserves a permanent exemption from this topic. There is a whole universe of excellent white Hip Hop artist who you are probably unaware of. Search for the expanded Anticon, Sage Francis, SixToo etc. ecosystem, all real emcees, none trying to be anything but who they are. I am a lifelong fan of Rap, Hip Hop, Rap, HardCore, and metal, please check my channel for music related playlist
you kinda look like keanu reeves
😆
Defeated Sanity? More like Defeated Melody 🤣 ; sick band
😆🤘🤘
The f#%$ you got against bass players bro.....also.....Satan!
Load is my favorite era, too! St. Anger is just heartbreaking to me. It ended the Load era, not in a good way, and even though I really came to appreciate the story and the necessity of the album after watching the Some Kind of Monster documentary (at Colgate, my Alma mater and also the Alma mater of at least one of the SKoM directors), I still can’t get over how bad the recordings sound. Great video and great thoughts!
And yes, I’m sorry I can’t get over it. ;) those songs do sound great live, though!
Amazing what turning on the snare can do 😆 I hope to see All Within My Hands live this year 🤞🤞
@ All Within My Hands is a great song!
Hard no for me. The production is a wet fart but the actual compositions and recording are fucking mid at best and dogshit at worst. We all knew this day would come where the cultural zeitgeist tries to twist the truth of this album. Sorry fellas, but the last great thing this band ever did was the Mercyful Fate medley, full stop.
Musicians will always look at music differently than fans. It's all subjective on how we feel about certain albums from bands we love. I would have been called a "Super Fan" in the 80's because they were my favorite band. Along came the black album and besides a good song here and there Metallica has not put out a solid album in decades! St. Anger is a hot mess from the snar drum to the production and James vocals are so off key it almost hurts my ears. Unfortunately they have become very generic unlike some of their counterparts who have undoubtedly put out some of their best work in over 30 years. Anthrax, Death Angel and Flotsam & Jetsam, just to name a few.
🤔 good point. I do wonder if my perspective is being flavored because I'm a musician and nerd 😂
@heavymetalphilosophy It's possible 🤣🤣
Every OG member gave their soul to this band. The devil keeps coming to collect
The devil keeps coming to collect. Damn that's a good line!
Thank you for sharing this one. I haven't listened to St. Anger in about twelve years, and I've never listened through earbuds until now. I allowed myself to remove the snare from the forefront of my brain, and that helped. A lot. This album is so goddam raw. The recording style and the overall feel give it an unpolished "Garage Days" vibe James does not have a perfect voice. Distinct, yes, but not perfect. I really like all the ugliness, the cracks, and the puberty-esque strains captured here. As you guys noted multiple times, brevity/editing would've helped. But, hey, who are we to judge? Now, time to hit replay on St. Anger.
Thank you! My work here is done. 😆🤘🤘
@heavymetalphilosophy: Such good work, as usual.
And justice for all was the very first metal album I listened to in 1989. I can still remember where I was and the experience of hearing the eerie opening to Blackened for the first time!
Greatest album intro ever!! 🤘🤘
great video. the few times I go back to it, I'm always surprised as to how heavy it is.
Thank you! 💯🤘🤘
I like st anger..but I also like early Swans 😉
ICP 😂😂😂😂😂👈
😆🤘
There is a better version of St Anger called St. (B)Anger by Michael Shea Audio, it's crazy🤯
Banger! 😆 I need to check that out.
@heavymetalphilosophy yeah even Brad Taste In Music was like wow
My life style determines my death style kinda some truth in that 🤘
Indeed! 🤘🤘
Metallica set a bar for themselves nobody could live up to over time. It's really that simple.
Very true.
I understood this album once I hit rock bottom.
I don't like st anger or load or reload but respect to you guys' opinions.
Respect! 🤜🤛🤘
Also i disagree about you said that ride the lighting's production being not great.
At 17:30 when Stephen said a lot of songs could be shorter...EXACTLY. Lars was hung up on long songs. Long songs are great when they don't feel long and/or repetitive. Lars seems to have missed that point. Many St. Anger tunes would benefit from being cut a little(dump Invisible Kid entirely, and Shoot Me Again, at least the very Nu metal first half of it). Cut off the ending of All Within. There's a lot of cool stuff on St. Anger that could shine with a remix/remaster/re-edit. If they continue with their Delux box sets, that could be an opportunity to do that, plus release some of those unreleased/Presidio tunes(I'm greedy, I want all of them). James says he doesn't like to look back(then WTF is 72?), but look at the positive vibes Iommi got for remixing Forbidden. There's times it's the right thing to do.
Great points! Especially the Iommi remix! 🤘🤘
The unnamed feeling is the only song I really like
A great one for sure! 🤘🤘
@heavymetalphilosophy yeah the drums on st anger feels alittle to loud sounds alittle too much like aluminum pans... but yall were talking about and justice for all that was my first cd too! that album is actually pretty progressive going back and listening to it now that I'm older
I agree it's their last record looking forward. I love Death Magnetic and the overlooked tunes on Beyond Magnetic. But they clearly gave up trying to innovate in any way and went back pretty close to the formula of Ride through Justice, right down to the: -Fade/Sanitarium/One structured tune -one instrumental(which is the weakest point on DM other than James' solo) -first and last songs are pretty much the fastest bangers Despite this similar formula, I really liked this batch of tunes. Then came Hardwired. I really like a few songs(title, spit, halo), reasonably like a couple and am bored to tears with a couple. But what troubled me was songs like Moth and Atlas. They weren't offensive, but they just seemed 'stock', like the riffs they were arguing about in SKOM. To me they felt like the riffs that would have been discarded on previous albums as overly simple. And the there was Dream No More. Which sounded cool...... because it was basically Sad But True. I'd hoped they were gonna feed off of the very positive vibes they got from Spit out the Bone, and write more along those lines going into the next album. Plus after Kirk's BS excuse of 'losing' all his riff ideas, yet surprisingly releasing a pretty creative Solo album(which shocked me TBH), I'd hoped some of that creativity would come to the new project. And then 72 drops, and it's a combination of all of the worst of the previous albums. They downright plagiarized themselves. 72 is made up of either: A) kea & AJFA songs rewritten and B) absolutely stock, basic riffs that they absolutely would have discarded on earlier albums. These guys take forever between albums. How is self plagiarizing the best they could do. Death Magnetic went back to the old formula, but the riffs and songs were cool, and didn't feel so regurgitated. Hardwired dipped into the stock, but didn't self-plagiarize other than maybe Dream No More. But I thought maybe some of the stock stuff came through cuz Kirk contributed nothing at all(and I'll never believe that lost phone bullshit, he just plain mailed it in). I started following these guys around '85. I didn't cry sellout when TBA hit, nor when the Loads came out. I loved the Symphony(but was disappointed by the lack of new renditions in the second one) and a lot of the Garage stuff. I don't just tolerate it, I really like St. Anger. Although I can't stand the vocals, I don't hate Lulu. At least not their part of it. I defended their stance on Napster, cuz I don't think it's right to steal music. I ignored the warning signs I was feeling on some of Hardwired. The good outweighed the bad. But 72? After the first song or two, I've never had less use for Metallica music. I couldn't believe how much lead single Lux whatever sounded like Hit the Lights. It is easily my lowest ranked metallica album. This 72 tour was the first time I purposely didn't go see them since the 80's. Yet they were praised left and right for 72. They've got no reason to stop repeating themselves now. I little icky feeling from Hardwired blew up a thousand fold on 72, and now I have little faith they're gonna make any new music that interests me. That's ok, they've already given me plenty. But it is bitterly disappointing how stock and bland they've become.
A long storied and complicated career, but like you said they have given me plenty.
I always thought they tried to start making heavier music again after the Loads, and didn't want to retread their old formulas, so they tried to do it differently. Everyone bashes the snare tone, but Lars was drumming his ass off on a lot of that album. That snare has never bothered me. It needs to be edited down some, no need for repetitive verses(deleting Invisible kid would take care of some of that). The little guitar solos and fills that made it into the live versions would have been fine on the recorded version. It's ok to have a song without a solo, but foolish to ban them from every song when they clearly fit. A little editing/cutting of several of the songs, add in the solos and fills, and recut it with the traditional snare tone since everyone hates that, and this same batch of songs would likely be received very differently.
💯 agreed! 🤘🤘
I listened to St. Anger a lot as I'd spent money on it, go back to it now and again but it does nothing for me. Honestly, I listen to every release but most of the newer releases sound like cut and paste to me. Lux Aeterna for example has the most uninspired riff ever. It only annoys me so much as I know how good they can be.
I thought Lux was a fun rock n roll song. Nothing groundbreaking but fun. I also dug Too Far Gone (the short song on the record). I was happy to have new music and due to some real life stuff it has sentimental value, but now that there's been some time I don't ever spin 72 Seasons anymore. But I had fun listening to St Anger again. 🤷
@heavymetalphilosophy Fair enough man. You're not the only person I've seen that has talked about having a changed perspective on St. Anger recently. Death Magnetic is probably the newer era Metallica that I go back to most. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I'm British so Maiden were my start in metal and still the band I hold dearest.
Lars holds the group back, very limited skill set and slop master. The only performances anyone point out as great drumming are studio recordings which have plenty of cheat techniques to polish sloppy play. The snare sound on st anger is overblown. Many drummers occasionally turn their snare wires off and use a similar sound (Danny Carey does frequently). Citing Lars recent studio performances in an era of quantized gridded studio computer assisted drumming proves nothing. Metal has moved miles past Metallica it's just the oldsters can't let go of their childhood faves (I'm 53, I grew up with Metallica but also have perspective that they were left behind years ago and just rehash moldy thrash).
While I'd agree that James is the heart of this band, I'd say that there are plenty worse drummers than Lars. He just gets more scrutiny for it because Metallica is so big and also because he brings it on himself 😆
regarding drop tuning: Better then You was in Drop tuning before St. Anger. After that, only All Nightmare Long is in Drop
Thank you! I wasn't sure. 🤘
Better Than You is not in Drop tuning. It's in Eb standard (half step down from standard). And after that, Minus Human on S&M was in Drop C#.
@@gergonikk ah, thanks for clearing that up
Fan remasters/mixes made me appreciate the album for what it was going for, still not really a fan of it but compared to so many other metal/rock albums of the time it’s really not that bad at all
Yes! Just like And Justice for Jason! 🤘🤘
I'm a huge death metal fan and discovered harakiri for the sky a few years ago. While listening to their new album, I pondered, "What is post black metal?" to which google brought me to this video. Thanks for the video! Now I have more PBM bands to check out. btw Scorched Earth is incredible!
That's awesome to hear. Thank you! And indeed the new album is great! 🤘🤘
Frantic is such a fun song to play on the drums. The grooves are a bit weird, which makes them interesting imo.
🤘🤘
Does sleep token really need to be categorized? I honestly enjoy the mix of instrumentals. Each song is its own story and has its own unique sound to it.
They don't NEED to be categorized, no. Analysis is just what I do and the point of this channel. It's just a fun exercise that I enjoyed doing. But at the end of the day great songs are great songs. 🙏🤘
@ I hope you don’t think I’m criticizing you, just giving an idea to think about. I hope you have a wonderful day and may God bless you and your family
@ Thanks! God bless you too. Respect.
I've been a Metallica fan since the beginning. I'm still a fan today, but it's mostly out of nostalgia as they really haven't produced anything great since AJFA, (just my honest and humble opinion of course). On the St Anger album they're trying way too hard to sound raw and it has always felt forced to me. The lack of guitar solos and the snare drums ruined the album for me and I seldom listen to it. Maybe it's time to give it another spin for a more critical listen.
It's definitely unique which I'm finding refreshing in comparison to most of what I listen to that's new. That doesn't justify it's short comings but it was definitely more fun to revisit than I anticipated. 🤘🤘
The last forward looking album was Death magnetic. At the time, they were on tour with Mnemic, Gojira, Machine Head...plus the album has tons of modern elements. Most of this album would have not happened in the 80's. While I like St. Anger, that honour goes to Death magnetic. Ireally REALLY miss this Metallica.Everything since Hardwired was so predictable and retro.
Maybe I'll change my mind since Death Magnetic is next on the list but I like that one the least of their post St Anger trilogy. Unforgiven 3 is a great song that I love but will need to refresh my memory for the others. 🤘
@@heavymetalphilosophy Death magnetic is actually my third favorite after Justice and Puppets. Just the mix is horrible
Death Magnetic was openly a conscious effort to go back, lol. Rick Rubin literally made them listen to what they listened to in the early 80s and to go back to the style of music that they loved making on the first couple of records. That was THE definition of a "looking back" record and they made it very clear publicly
@@gergonikk It was an effort to go back, yes. But they didn't limit themselves to their past. Again, much of this album has big unfleunce from 2000's metal. Like the second riff in End Of The Line being very Tool-ish, the Machine Head-like grooves in That was just your life etc etc. You can clearly hear they also liked what was happening around them.
Hahhaa, why would he agree to that disagree on st angered haha fans changed their minds o they openly fan criticism funny
That's what we do 😆🤘
St. Anger is a pretty alright album. It is just different from what's before and after it
Exactly 🤘🤘
Ride the Lightning all day
Yass my absolute favorite by them
All timer for sure! 🤘🤘
I have always defended St Anger. I watched some kind of monster on repeat as a kid and I loved how different it was. As for the snare there's something so assaulting about the snare that matches the aggressiveness of the record. It's aged better than some of their other records.
ALSO, the artwork is incredible. i got my acrylic paints out and painted that fist 3 feet tall on my bedroom wall.
I watched A Year and Half in the life of Metallica so much that the tape in the VHS broke. 😆
Me too. I defended St. Anger. I saw SKOM in theatres before the dvd was released and loved it, making me love the music more. I'd still love to get those unreleased tunes. Somewhere I've got a CD with every snippet of unreleased music from the Presidio sessions(temptation, DK Rolls, I forget the other titles).
I appreciate a different take on this. Even if I don’t appreciate anything they have done in the past 30 years, at all. St Anger hate is as old and boring as people saying “Lars drumming sucks!” Personally I think there is way more viable things to criticize L.U. for than his drumming! 😂
Thank you. And indeed, his drumming is fine. Lots of bands have drummers at that level or worse, but those bands aren't as big as Metallica so they don't get the scrutiny. 🤷
His stance on Napster, for instance. Lol.
MyTallica💞🎸🤘🏻
🤘🤘
walking down the streets of Chicago and hearing Shoot me again, shoot me again!!!, wow it has always been so powerful. Some kind of monster is a brutal bluesy jam, and a bunch of other jams. Ok, it's not the best album they made but NO WAY is it their worst. I've always had a special place in my heart for some of the jams on St. Anger. I think its ridiculously over hated, I'm interested in what you guys have to say!!
Chicago and Shoot Me Again adds a whole new context! 😆🤘
I actually really like a lot of st anger and come back to a lot of it on the regular.
I will too after this one! 🤘🤘
Cant say I've been remembering it wrong. I've been trying to forget that steaming pos for a long time haha
Your honesty and candor is always so refreshing. Love It!
