Morbid Visions, Bestial Devastation, and Schizophrenia still hold that old raw sound but just cleaned up a bit and mastered in a way you can hear it all. They really kept the soul of those albums. It really shows you can record something with todays tech and keep the sound of a late 80's underground release.

Anyways, I figured you might like tool a lot more if you sped up their tracks; I know I haven't done it, and I enjoyed listening to their discog one time, but rarely went back (even after finding Lateralus as groundbreaking, and an Aenima relisten to have one sweet track - Eulogy?) The thing about rawer production making the music sound more authentic and heavier is true, and clearly showcased in Sepulturas Morbid Visions and the recent re recordings. Id say the goldielocks zone between raw and great production is the classic Slayer Ric Rubim produced albums

I agree about the bacon. I don't eat meat now, but when I used to, I would say I couldn't give up meat because of chicken and bacon. One morning I had a cooked breakfast and there was some marinated mushrooms, which I was really enjoying and not interested in the bacon really at all. Gave up meat the next day

I'm no Tool fanboy necessarily, I think they're fine, they're good, but Finn...you're cruisin' for a bruisin' here brother. That's not from me, I'm just referring to their fanbase. You're one brave soul my man. lol

I’m a little late this time, apologies Finn.
I think you’ve shared your opinion on misfits before, in a previous video and it’s really the only thing I disagree with you on. Graves era Misfits was iconic!
However, when I saw the “Cincinnati chili” image, I immediately thought it was “makaronia me kima” which is essentially what you call “Greek spaghetti sauce” 😂
So there you have it, you earned your like once again ❤

I'm w/ ya on the production. To me, clean production makes bands sound 'samey'. So many bands have their own sound, but w/ perfect production it's often lost. Once reason I love ...And Justice for All (yes, Metallica stan here) is that it has VERY distinct production and I love its tone and sound. And I know Rick Rubin gets shit on for his production but I think he adds character to songs from like uber-compression or thin/reedy sounding stuff that makes songs more memorable or unique.

I kind of like the so so production on Opiate for some reason. I guess maybe it makes the evolving sound of Undertow “pop” even more maybe? Something about the grittiness that EP makes me really love it

Oh man, I agree 100% with the "it work best when they're barely holding it together" opinion. To me that's almost like listening to an improvisation, it feels so much more free and exciting. That's one of the reasons I love NOFX's Animal Liberation, the whole records is on the brink of disaster. That's what hardcore should be imo.

Also yes death metal, thrash, & punk sound best when the production is RAW!

there is a genre us musicians call .'production metal' where the songwriting, riffs are stock standard,(boring,re hashed
) but the production is really high end, this is the way of the world now,no point dissing them,it's industry standard now, peace, rock on.
