One can only conclude that the fish can tell if the bait fish they are after are acting/swimming naturally. The fish with a hook through its back swimming upside down is not making natural movements. Only when it started swimming naturally did the fish get interested, but they were still leery of it. The hook is clearly visible as well. Hard to say if that has a bearing but it must seeing as they were hell bent on the minnows in the jar and yet turned their noses up at the hooked fish.
This is a great video... the only thing I might suggest is to not use gold fish, they are destructive to a natural environment and can become very invasive.
When we fish off our dock, we poke holes in a can of cheap dog food and throw it under the dock. Makes a huge difference. Give it about 30 minutes and the difference in catch rates is incredible.
I guess fish are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. I know fish are line and hook shy but I thought with the live bait and other fish around it was going to be a frenzy just goes to show fish are very aware of there surroundings.
amazing how they avoid the hooked bait. I actually felt good that I wasn't the only one getting skunked even though I felt I presented the bait reasonably well.
It is the movement that attracts the bass. That is why when you see bass in a pond next to other fish the other fish move real slow and the bass don't attack . However if you observe and one starts to move fast the bass will attack the fish that is moving fast. . The bait was still at first so the bass was not interested. The movement triggered it feeding instinct. Reptiles do the same thing.
For all the people saying they know what a hook is.... ever stop to think about the fact a fish swimming upside down and haphazardly means the meal is probably going to be crap? I think the fish are hesitant because normal that would mean the prey animal was very sick.
I've experienced sort of the same thing, this year I started trapping minnows and shiners in the shallows of a cove at my local lake. There's about 8 ft of vis. , the bass would school up around the trap and be blowing up on the minnows outside of it, but wouldn't touch any of my hooked minnows
I’ve seen companies invent electric baits that look and act like real live baitfish and swim in the water by themselves, I personally have never used one but I would love to try it.
Just want to say I really enjoyed your videos! I live in Titusville and have been bass fishing the st. John's, Etc my whole life and I would have loved to have done what you have here there! Just to see what goes on under the water how awesome!
That was awesome as an experiment. If actually fishing I would use a net and the jar since watching this. Just fascinating. Thanks, cool video for sure.
Dude excellent video. My buddies day fishes salmon… salmon.. with 10lb test and trout tackle. He loses a lotta fish but he hooks up like 4 times more often than the rest of us. Light line. Tiny hooks. If you think unnatural stuff doesnt matter your wrong as hell. They’ve never been hooked by a fish in a jar
The bass are attracted to the minnows and one goldfish in the plastic jar because of the sounds or vibrations they are making. I think that these vibrations are as effective if not more to trigger the bass to get their attention. The same reason when a live minnow is used with a bobber. The minnow freaks out knowing that they are unable to swim away from predators that are approaching nearby. Fear and panic must emit these special vibrations and the bass cannot resist.
Nope. Small mouth grabbed it by the tail to get a better look at what is attached to it. People usually don't hook shiners by the tail so I'm assuming that's a safe place for a fish that's seen a fair share of hooks and sinkers.
I don't fish freshwater much but this was very interesting. I'm not totally convinced yet that it is any of the tackle that kept them from biting. Maybe it is; but I wonder if it was the number of minnows that grabbed and held their attention? I would like to see this again but then swim an a rig by the jar to see if they bite.
Try just a plastic jar with fake fish in it, or other stuff inside, some sparkle stuff, and then try one with nothing in it as a test. You have a weird reaction going on with them, and if you can figure out what's going on, maybe you can make a bait that looks like a miniature jar with mini shiners in it with a hook attached to the sides.
Very good. Next time have it attach to a line. And keep it up off the bottom, to keep from stirring up a cloud of mud. Being it's so small, fewer minnows. Cool trying to get a reaction from live bait on another line.
I use the same tactics to catch bass that I use to play with my cat. They love the same jerky movements and like to pounce from behind and under stuff.
I think it was because they saw it like a panicked "school". The numbers. I see guys fishing with those lures that look like a small school and having good success in certain conditions. Even some record fish have been caught with that type of lure.
Do it in deep clear water with one of those huge 5 gallon jugs 😳 Have a couple other people with GoPros on lines as well to be sure you get tons of good shots ☺️
Bass are super smart, line and hook definitely makes a difference. I’ve thrown tons of live shiners and it causes a feeding frenzy then I throw my shiner in with super light flourocarbon and a tiny hook and they won’t even go for it or even look at it. They’re too damn smart!
Wow! So interesting! I thought for sure you would hook them right away too. Maybe try with thinner line, smaller hook and smaller weight. See if that makes a difference. And the first video I saw of yours was in Florida. This must be up north cuz I didn't think there was small mouth in Florida?
As an aquarist of 10 years and someone who researches aquatic ecology: please don't use goldfish as bait! They are tough as nails so if they get off the hook, they WILL survive and are horribly invasive. They can choke out entire waterways. They're also relatively intelligent and are probably more aware of their situation than some other baitfish.
@@aceunderwater Just because it's common doesn't mean it's a good thing. There's a reason why releasing goldfish into the wild (including using them as bait) is illegal in many states, including Georgia where I live. Yet bait shops sell goldfish for bait. We have a responsibility as fishermen to conserve and protect our waterways, not enable practices which actively damage them.
BASS: yum yum minnow BAIT MINNOW: don't fall for it cuz I only have 30 seconds left. *lesson learned* Always kill ur bait becoz they'll rat u out to the others🫡
I wonder if the bass associate fish that swim strange with infectious diseases and so avoid them. This would be a useful evolutionary adaptation. However, the fact that the bass pulled the tail of the bait fish also leads me to wonder if the bass was actually testing the bait by pulling on it to see if it was attached to a line! This would also be very evolutionarily useful in a heavily fished area. It may even be learnt behaviour, which if restricted to only some bass populations and not to those that are seldom fished, may be an example of culture - which is rare within animals. There is a great fish behaviour PhD waiting to be researched here.
culture/personality etc definitely IS NOT a rare thing amongst animals . its incredibly common if you just actually look. Theres a great tv series made by bbc called dynasties. There youll see numerous animal species of different types from primates, big cats, birds, wolf etc all displaying their cultures and personalities. Sorry but i cant stand the whole notion many believe, that animals arent sentient/have consciousness etc, and they simply operate on instinct nothing else. its such an ignorant thing to believe, animals dont learn best methods for things they do, remember where they put stuff, engage in war, teaching their young, all purely by instinct. And yes, animals do engage in war, especially primates, theyre renowned for revenge. A family member could be killed by a rival family and theyll go out looking for them, find the one responsible and kill them all the while the rest are all fighting each other. Thats a true display of culture, everything i said here is
It’s not natural! Even when the gold fish went down it tried to flee and that drew the interest of the fish. Those minnows even in the jar were trying to get away it’s not the fishing line as much as the action. And minors flee big fish not just hang around.
My guess is those fish have been hooked before and put back in the lake. Maybe more than once... ya think they would remember what a hook line looks like...
@@aceunderwater cut most of the middle of the lid out so you just have a ring of screw thread left, kinda like a mason jar lid. put plastic wrap over the mouth of the jar then screw the ring over that to hold it on. or just use duct tape to hold plastic wrap on. See if the bass can tear through the plastic wrap lid to get at the bait.
Those minnows are definitely traumatized 😂
Lol thats what I was just gonna comment
So much so one just went belly up.🤣
Don't get too upset, all the minnows were sent to therapy after filming.
The minnows were definitely taunting the bass 😂
Don't worry, that many of in that little amount of water they won't live long enough to have any serious emotional trauma.
Ha, those minnows probably felt like the two kids in Jurassic park in the SUV with the TRex banging on the glass- minnows probably dead from fear…😂
Looks like the bass were trying to help the minnows that were trapped in the jar he's like "hold on fellas I'll get u outta there" lol

In the immortal words of Hank Hill that bass saw the hooked goldfish and said ''that boy ain't right''
Those Bass obviously read the same magazine as you do! 🤣

Plot twist : the bass was just trying to free those minnows 😂😂😂
Bass know what a hook is! This proves it.
Ok that's pretty darn cool. Do more of these please.
That's why it's calling fishing and not catching! Ha ha ha!
Thanks, Dad
@@teebob21 You're welcome, Hipster Dude.

Bass are literally cats.. Haha noted
I remember reading the same article. Never thought it would work.
so interesting! after this one and the pier video, can't wait to see what you have next!
Those bass didn't get that big by being stupid I guess...I was always told to hide the hook .... bury it deep in the baits body
amazing how they avoid the hooked bait. I actually felt good that I wasn't the only one getting skunked even though I felt I presented the bait reasonably well.
Minnows: emotional damageeeee

The minnows and goldfish in the jar were safe to eat. The bass knows the goldfish is armed with a sharp hook. It ain't a dumb fish.
This new channel is going to skyrocket👏 hope to see many more
Those Bass need some frickin “laser beams” 😉

I love the old reposts!
Perhaps you can put some hooks outside of the jar so the bass will inhale the hook because the bass will be trying to inhale the minnows
Mr Bass:: "What's on the telly then?"
Mrs Bass (sceechy Monty Python 'Mrs Pepperpot' voice): "Ooh, looks like one of those food programmes".
I love your videos ace. You are the goat youtube, respect from Australia

make a release hatch so the minnos can swim away and see the reaction of the bass

Let a PA Game Warden catch you with goldfish and it’s gonna an expensive day!
Maybe they just wanna save them

this is honestly hilarious

Loved the video! I almost wonder if the smallmouth was testing for a hookset. Like, if it gets jerked into oblivion ill just leave it alone...
Dude great idea! Run with it! I’d love to see more!
Cool new idea, love to see more of this.
Gonna have to do this at some point in the spring or summer
That is very interesting. I’ll have to try that method to try and get the bass close by.
Nice video ace 😂 that bass was pissed
Interesting , why is it we all want what's out of our reach ? The same thing is available for nothing but it's not good enough ?
Man I've been binging your vids for an hour or so. You have great film work in general. Adding the goldfish was sorta genius

Maybe you could try taking the bucket away once they're nearby? Then they'll not have any distractions and see the bait.
Test the theory of the lure. Drop a minnow not on a hook and see if it nails it.
Could you try a jar full of crawfish or worms?
Fun underwater video!
I’ve had saltwater fish tanks for years and I can say that fish on as dumb as people think. Fish can think and process things

Busted its lip trying to get at the food
Interesting. I may try a variation of this in the future. It really does appear that those fish recognized a hook.

They were trying to rescue the trapped fish.
Shark cage for minnows
Something you could do is connect fishing line to the jar and reel the up/pull
Basically a mini bait ball for the bass
Catfish do the same in moving water and minnow trap
