From Northern Ontario where Pike abound this was an excellent video on how pike react as they get ready to strike. I’ve been lucky to have caught pike ranging from 20-29 pounds. I work in a fishing tackle store and I tell my customers that pike prefer dead bait. Dead bait gives them time to size up their next meal. Nothing beats a dead bait under a float for pike fishing. I still get a thrill as the bobber dances on the surface then plunges under as the pike hammers the bait! Awesome underwater video I really enjoyed it!

It's so interesting to see how they investigated the baits before taking them.. I was always under the impression they just go for it if there are there
I think it is because the bait is stationary. If it thought the bait was swimming away I think it would be more inclined to strike. I saw a weird interaction between a cat and a pigeon one time. The cat was aggressively approaching the pigeon and clearly wanted to jump it, but the pigeon just slowly walked away every time the cat got close. It approached the bird probably 5 times over 2 minutes but did not attack. The cat was not seeing an expected fear response in its prey and didn't know what to do.
@@juliogonzo2718 Could be that, predators don't like prey that are not afraid because they may be dangerous prey. Or as interdiction said, it's been caught before and learning plus there is a camera in the water and fish know their surroundings, that may also scare them off. They're also familiar with their normal prey and neither of those bait fish really belonged.....which could be another red flag for a predator.
@@juliogonzo2718 Yeah, the stationary bait doesn't trigger the immediate bite response that a moving bait would. I am used to fishing pike with lures that simulate moving fish and pikes are very eager to nab anything moving that looks like something they eat.

You can see that most of those fish have been laying doggo during the bad weather because of the water leeches on them. The footage is amazing as usual. Good one Chris. 👍
I find with Pike there are peak periods where they feed both day and night, I’ve had weeks where I caught far more pike at night actually. But that’s usually during the spring and fall shallow water periods. Just sucks when the conditions are blown out and terrible, some seasons are just like that unfortunately. Can’t choose what the weather does, just gotta get out when you have the chance. Pike can be very touchy with weather patterns and feeding windows, I find overcast with light rain in spring and summer, a coldfront with snow moving in during Fall, or stable warmfront/snowy weather in winter gets them going. As long as it’s overcast I do pretty well for Pike usually. I’ll be setting desdbaits under tipups here in Wisconsin USA soon, waiting for the arctic blast to pass and warm up. Been watching your videos for awhile now , and I run a UA-cam page myself here as a fisherman! You make great content! Good luck fishing!
they dont want dead bait, throw live bait in there and i bet they would strike almost immediately, they dont want a free meal, they are mean and are triggered to strike out of aggression, the dead bait doesnt activate that instinct
Another great video showing fish behaviour. Although the Pike fishing is different in Scotland (we don't have pike in rivers and have only a small handful of canals, we have to fish lochs, casting further and in deeper water) the fish behaviour is the same (I presume)() This video has helped and got me thinking. Cheers 👍
It's a really good channel with for me perfect content. However, there are some creators like Fish with Carl (and Alex) or Jon B. who have made (especially the longer) videos that are true works of art when it comes to filming, presenting and editing. Chris' channel is not on that level, yet. But hey that's just my two cents.
@@mergru6371I’ve been watching both creators for years and they both create for different purposes. Indeed, Carl launched a new channel to compete with Chris’ of the day to day angler vibe rather than the epic over edited films of the old Carl and Alex genre. The ginger fisherman takes you along to the bank and gets the action we all want to see in real time. I appreciate sometimes that it is filmed over more than one session and long sessions at that but we are there all the while. Some of the smaller channels are really interesting. Lured by Esox’s is a brilliant hybrid of both types. Sean and Catherine take you along and also produce cracking films. We see the problems with some creators DB fishing being one. Basically too much casting and retrieving in go pro with very little "B roll”. I take into consideration that all of these guys don’t like to advertise their locations for obvious reasons but too many close shots are boring. As long as good creators keep producing what is interesting I’ll keep watching.
As clearly interested in the bait as they were, worthy of note was how prudent their attitude towards both the bait and the camera. Great video - thanks!
Pike have really good vision, so my guess is he could tell the difference between the mackerel and the roach, also predator fish do prefer to hunt so the roach being hole could have helped if he thought it might be alive. fascinating video to watch, i watched some guy put a live fish in a see through cube and place that on the bottom of the lake, and the pike was going mental for it and kept striking the cube trying to get the fish.
I spent my childhood fishing for northern pike, pickerel and small mouth in Northern Ontario, as my parents had a hunting and fishing camp. We did all sorts of fishing, still/drifting, casting, trolling etc. and had many good days as well as our share of days being "skunked". I always wished I could see what the heck was going on "down there"! :) Nice vid! Man, I wish I could go back to those days! A bad day fishing is better than a good day at the office!
Chris, I have to say that you are an absolute legend buddy, you're the David Attenborough of the fishing world. Thank you for exceeding the world of fishing video's, you have taken it to another level, it's going to be difficult for others to compete with, albeit, this obviously, is not your intention. Really appreciate your work mate, as we do for other you tube anglers
I’m from Canada and I ice fish for pikes. Even if water is colder, it’s pretty the same conditions: cold water, slow-ish pikes. I have the same result as you do: best results (by far) are with a dead bait, lying very close or straight on the bottom. I usually set my bait 6-12 inch (15-30cm) of bottom. Even half of a big dead bait works. But the key things are really big dead baits, no action/mouvement. It was pretty cool seeing these shots! Great video!
I've only ever fished with a float for small stuff at the local club but watching these videos has inspired me to buy a light spinner rod. Everything I know about spinning is from this channel or one or two other English UA-cam channels! (Thanks Carl!) So far I've got a load of perch - mostly less than half a pound but I've caught a few up to a pound which isn't much compared to Chris but I've been so happy with them! Thanks for your tuition Chris! I love the videos where you teach the basics - I think that's how most fisherman learn how to fish these days! Tight lines and keep the educational vids coming!
G. Fisherman, thank you so very much. The underwater video is fabulous. It's crystal clear and sharp as can be. Really enjoyed seeing natural fish behavior.
Here in Southern Ontario, Canada, we fish for Pike and Muskie using LIVE minnows, very large minnows. And the bait is presented LIVE, not dead. Pike are not carrion eaters, they are hunters.....they want LIVE BAIT. So, even if your bait fish has died, hook it just under the top fin, and jig it occasionally, to give it the appearance that it is alive. You will get must better more often bites and catch far more.
I'm a southern Ontario guy too and while I agree with your statement in general, of the thousands of pike I've caught over many years, the biggest was ironically caught fishing a dead perch as bait from a dock at night as a kid! Just cast it out beyond the drop off, out the rod in the dock pole and wait! Caught many huge Bowfin doing that as well!
I hope you know using live bait is illegal in Zone 16. I already contacted the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, thanks for giving all the proof.
Not trying to be a party killer here, but remember live bait is cruelty. Use dead bait and jig it. Most of us fish for sport anyway, no need to torture fish when sporting.
As a Yank working in Germany, my friend and I traveled yearly for 7 years straight to the northern tip of Loch Lomand in the town of Ardlui to fish for pike. What we did differently to other enthusiasts who were there doing same is that we purchased about 200 live trout at 50p a pop from a fish nursery some distance from Ardlui and aerated them in the back of van in big plastic barrels like mad, and probably had about 170 alive by the time we got back to the Loch. We always caught many more and much bigger fish than those who were using dead baits. Me and my mates pulled some giants from that Loch and the locals were all for it as we were doing our bit to safe-guard the other more important species in the Loch.
They were very fresh. Knocked over the head just before casting out, so I think there was still some nerve twitching going on with a couple of the fresh baits 😂Only noticed in post
Amazing footage, so interesting to see what happens under the water. All those times we're sat on the bank wondering why nothing is happening when in actual fact there's multiple fish scoping out your bait! Great video and can't wait for more like this for other species
Some nice pike, interesting how that first pike was so hesitant to take the bait, where as the others were straight on it, great video mate, keep it up please 🎣🎣
Pikes are protacanthopterygian ray-finned fish that constitute the family Esocidae, they are the only extant family of the order Esociformes, there are over eight extant species under three genera and are native only to the Northern Hemisphere continents, the eight extant species of pike are the Redfin Pickerel (Luciella americana), the Grass Pickerel (Luciella vermiculata), the Chain Pickerel (Luciella nigra), the Northern Pike (Esox lucius), the Amur Pike (Esox reichertii), the Aquitanian Pike (Esox aquitanicus), the Cisalpine Pike (Esox cisalpinus), and the Muskellunge (Moschulongius masquinongy).
It’s still raining in February…I haven’t been able to take my dogs on their usual walk for a while now, the regular field is like a swamp! But I bet we’ll still have a water shortage in the summer!
great video, i like how you have respect for the pike and release them without stressing them out too much. quick unhooking without harm. i used to like using sprats. killer bait.
There use to be plenty of them in our neck of the woods, in which they were solely fished for sport. Then the MNR came up with ridiculous pickerel slot sizes and limits, in which the pike population got hit the hardest, since everyone were throwing back perfect eating sized pickerel and keeping the pike instead.
Fascinating !!!!.. It looks like after they have done thier first checkout, they swim around in an almost protective way above and around the bait... looking to see if any other pike are around that might want to nick thier find, or perhaps if bleongs to another. Only after they are happy do they finally go in for the meal..
Brilliant footage! I've fished for Northern Pikes before (been a long time!)and this really shows how smart these fish are! They are very careful and you have to be patient when fishing for them.....I don't have enough unfortunately 😂 Cheers!
i often fish for pike and perch, however ive never used deadbaits, a tutorial would be a great idea, setting up the different rigs and what equipment would be best, great video as always , you and snagged bro are must watch for fishing rivers and canals, the two best channels out there
Just stumbled across your channel, and what an interesting and fun look at pike behavior and fishing. No denying their predatory nature. Well done and thanks.
My dad, brother and I would go to Ontario in late Summer/early Fall every year to fish the multitude of privately owned small lakes surrounding Algonquin Provincial Park. Small mouth bass and speckled/rainbow trout were always on the list. Often a guide friend of ours would take us to naturally unstocked lakes which were on farmers' private uncultivated land. Well hidden by forest land from trespassers (who kept every fish they caught regardless of legal size or limit); Northern Pike lakes always provided us the most fun and most beautiful, naturally reproduced fighting fish. We always saved the best of the keepers for the farmers, in addition to some cash. They simply never had the time to fish their own pristine lakes. I had never seen canal fished Pike, and I certainly had never seen a Northern Pike, at least, eat dead fish. Live frogs, large minnows, perch and rock bass (or crappies as they are also known) were the only non-artificial, live bait we saw or used ourselves. Lures were used 75% of the time. The Pike must be ravenous in the wintertime to act like this. Thanks so much for a very educational and informative vlog.
That's crazy that you got northern pike in those canals in the UK right in town. I had no idea they were there until today. Learned something new and enjoyed the video.
When fishing for Canadian pike, we use large red and white spoons (3 to 6"). Pike will hit anything that's red very aggressively. I've had the privilege of fishing in absolutely untouched waters in deep Canadian wilderness (pulled a canoe up a small stream to a lake off the main canoe route, about 150km from closest civilization). Four or five casts, every fifty feet or so along the shore would get reliable hits pretty much every time. Catch one; move 50' down the shore; catch another. Pike are territorial, so they space out at 50' intervals. The thought of waiting an hour for a pike to hit seems kind of bonkers to me. I would be surprised if English pike are significantly different from Canadian pike. A fishing guide told me that even tying a bit of red cloth on the tail of a non-Pike lure will get results.
I know that (as a commercial fisherman, for Salmon etc, in Alaska,) fish are extremely sensitive to electrical current. A lot of time and effort is put into ‘tuning’ the trolling boats to have the right current. The lines going into the salt water are stainless, and the boat and salt water become a giant battery. All sorts of different things have been tried over the years, but if the current isn’t right, the boat won’t fish as well. I wonder if those pike were picking up the electrical currents from the Camera? Good video. Sure do love fishing!
Hi GFM that was great, and very very helpful, yes do more stuff underwater, I like the fish that swims between both pike at the start it was so cool, you are just the best fisherman on youtube, please keep the underwater stuff coming :) thanks Chris
Worth an award this one, the tentative behaviour is a real surprise, I have known trout to be similar which can account for foul hooks as they test the subject before trying it.
Great footage,I've been out many times this year & blanked in places I normally do well.I thought I was doing something wrong but.just shows its how they are on the day feeding wise..👍
Fantastic video, I normally fly fish for trout but seeing the sophistication of these pike is really interesting! I'd like to try for them on the fly but I don't have the right rod yet.
love the footage. subscribed. I"m a US transplant currently in Germany and we don't use a whole lot of dead bait back in the states so I'm learning and trying to adjust my techniques.

Those pike 100% know something isn’t quite right. We don’t give them enough credit.
It’s facial expression said it all, so did his lady friend, you could tell she was panicking like mad telling him not to take it, “don’t do it jack”
Generally, if a pike or musky are caught on something, they will avoid that presentation, outside the young ones.
they dont want dead bait, throw live bait in there and i bet they would strike almost immediately, they dont want a free meal, they are mean and are triggered to strike out of aggression, the dead bait doesnt activate that instinct
I agree same when they follow a lure in a couple of time change the lure and normally they take it
So true
the initial approach of the honorable mention, awesome. just a silhouette coming out of the depth. great video!!
Another great video showing fish behaviour. Although the Pike fishing is different in Scotland (we don't have pike in rivers and have only a small handful of canals, we have to fish lochs, casting further and in deeper water) the fish behaviour is the same (I presume)() This video has helped and got me thinking.
Cheers 👍
Very interesting to see how the pike behaves before taking the bait. Well done on filming that.
This fresh water fishing channel has 💯 got the best content such a choice of different stuff fantastic 👌
They're so majestic cruising through the water.
An excellent episode Chris, fascinating to see how the Pike reacts to the various baits. More vids like this for me..
As clearly interested in the bait as they were, worthy of note was how prudent their attitude towards both the bait and the camera. Great video - thanks!
Great footage - really interesting to see the different reactions and how the pike behaved. Would love to see more. 👍
Seriously great footage. Really interesting to see the pikes reactions when a bait turns up. They certainly dont waste time in showing interest
Great video. Very pleased that you released these magnificent creatures.
I've been sick recently - your videos have helped me into recovery, just letting you know great work dont stop and thank you 😊 🙏 your pike pal
Thanks Buddy!
David Attenborough of the Fishingworld is funny 🎣🦆👍🪱
Great video. I can remember catching 10 to 20 lb pike fishing in North Dakota when I lived there. Summer fishing and ice fishing.
Funny how the pike hesitated before taking the bait, as if they've seen a camera before 😂. Excellent video.
Absolutely fantastic photography. Greatly we!comed..cheers...
I know an underwater rock in gulf of Finland where you can get a pike literally with every throw of your lure. It's incredible how many sit there...
I find any underwater footage of fishing intriguing, so for me the more the better thank you.
Interesting video. Especially that last take where the pike moved the bait with water movement and then nailed it as though it was alive.
Enjoyed watching this really eye opening watching the underwater takes 👌
I agree better luck live with northern then dead but big ones like dead or alive
Live bait is ilegal here in the Netherlands. Dont like it myself either. Good law
Excellent underwater coverage Chris, nice one 👍
Always very interesting to see the behaviour of pike. Great video👍🏻
04:49 That roach really was fresh, it even takes a gulp.
My exact thoughts 😂
They were very fresh. Knocked over the head just before casting out, so I think there was still some nerve twitching going on with a couple of the fresh baits 😂Only noticed in post
@@The_ginger_fisherman my question is, would the pike have took it quicker if it was alive and mobile. Great video 👍
Yea I thought I saw it gulp.
@jimjoelliejack no doubt buddy. Never seen a pike turn down an active live bait
Brilliant footage mate .Your the only person taking time on this subject and your enthusiasm shines .Great vid sir .
❤Amazing underwater pikes footage 🎬❤
Amazing footage, so interesting to see what happens under the water. All those times we're sat on the bank wondering why nothing is happening when in actual fact there's multiple fish scoping out your bait! Great video and can't wait for more like this for other species
WoW... If you can..jajaja.. please more footage Like this... Cheers from Germany 🎣👍🐟
Great fun here :-) I liked the way the Pike approached the bait at around 9 minutes into the video :-) excellent maneuvering
Brilliant!!! Definitely love to see more Chris, professional footage and informative narration, great work
Is that an anchor worm above its left eye at 2:16
I think
I'm a "catch and eat" kind of guy (only one fish for dinner) but... I loved it that you released that beauty.
You wouldn't eat pike surely
@@cribscian those are too boney aren’t they?
Some nice pike, interesting how that first pike was so hesitant to take the bait, where as the others were straight on it, great video mate, keep it up please 🎣🎣
Could you do a similar under water video to test if a ‘circle hook’ is even worth a try, compared to trebles.
great clear video and no loud music. interesting even for a non fisherman like myself
Love underwater videos! 🔥
Then the MNR came up with ridiculous pickerel slot sizes and limits, in which the pike population got hit the hardest, since everyone were throwing back perfect eating sized pickerel and keeping the pike instead.
don't have any pickerel here in Blighty. well not to my knowledge anyway.@@crazyralph6386
Pike are nothing more than "fresh water" Barracuda!
And your point is?
We call them the lochness of the lakes

that footage is crazy, getting to actually watch the fish under you like that
The surgeon of the water, great bit of filming and thank you for sharing this
Fascinating !!!!..
I love the camera work, thank you Chris!
i often fish for pike and perch, however ive never used deadbaits, a tutorial would be a great idea, setting up the different rigs and what equipment would be best, great video as always , you and snagged bro are must watch for fishing rivers and canals, the two best channels out there
Carl (and Alex) have some great pike tutorials on the Fishing tutorials channel 🙂👍
Just stumbled across your channel, and what an interesting and fun look at pike behavior and fishing. No denying their predatory nature. Well done and thanks.
That was great footage, very interesting to see the Pike in action!
Hey ginger fisherman , i really appreciate your Videos. Not only because of the information, i really appreciate your style and your commitment.
that was a really facinating video and i don't know of too many other content creators doing this stuff...thanks a lot and please keep it up.
That was fun to watch! First fish I ever caught as a child was a Jack Pike, remember the fight fondly.
This was amazing video, well done. And the float fishing for pike is one of the best!!!
That was so much fun! Please give us more. Thanks. 😀
We have decent size pike in Maine like these. Love these types of videos.
Class act Chris. Brilliant footage. Unique stuff thanks!
Dormant (leaches) rise in temp so maybe yet well fed ?? how much pressure with those fish capture marks on the fish ?? so many questions
Excellent video mate! Never seen them feeding underneath the surface, so interesting so let’s have more please!👍🇦🇺🙏
Amazing video. I had no idea that pikes were so manouverable.
Hi GFM that was great, and very very helpful, yes do more stuff underwater, I like the fish that swims between both pike at the start it was so cool, you are just the best fisherman on youtube, please keep the underwater stuff coming :) thanks Chris
I loved that! They look like monsters on the bank but the way they move and their faces in the water, They really are like puppies 😂
Bloody awesome video Chris. Thanks for sharing buddy.
Absolutely great videos! Really interesting to see how the pike react to these baits. Thank you.
Absolutely wonderful! Going to try it in the forthcoming spring.
Absolutely Fantastic Footage!! A Great Watch to see what these buggers are doing underwater . Look forward to some more footage soon . Cheers!
love the footage. subscribed. I"m a US transplant currently in Germany and we don't use a whole lot of dead bait back in the states so I'm learning and trying to adjust my techniques.
Fantastic, exciting, and fascinating to watch. Thank you.
Truly beautiful fish and wonderful footage!
(would LOVE more like this!)
Brilliant. Very educational. Well done for that video mate. I've shared it with all my pike fishing buddies because it's class. Top man.
wow so cool to see the underwater view of Pike
your underwater footage is what drew me to you Chris mate .. been following for about 2 years now .. love your vids
