I’m 68 years, this was the song played for my high school graduation in 1974. It amazes me to see a young man like you appreciating this great singer 50 years later. Keep on listening to great music from the 1970’s, you will continue to be amazed. I just subscribed to your channel and look forward to what you react to next.
Goodbye to Love is their hardest rocking song with a nifty guitar solo. It wouldn’t be out of place on a prog band’s album. This song was written by Paul Williams( think Smokey and the Bandit)for a bank ad in SoCal. The Carpenters were always just the 2 of them. The very best LA studio musicians were the “band “
The fact they were brother and sister, she sings & maybe plays drums. He arranges the music, what better person to frame her voice than her sibling !! Thankfully she left so much behind as we lost her way too early !! 🥲
Paul Williams wrote this touching song about newlyweds for a bank commercial. Richard Carpenter saw the commercial on TV, got permission to record the music, and the rest is history!
Suggestion: "This Masquerade," which features a fabulous jazz piano solo by Richard and a great flute solo by Bob Messenger. Karen's vocals are amazing as usual.
You may be surprised that the Carpenters harmonies and background vocals are just Richard and Karen with many overdubs. The other band members would provide the background vocals when playing live performances, although videos, like this one, are the studio audio with just Richard and Karen singing.
Too many songs to list here. Start with "This Masquerade" as I suggested above and follow with "Close to You" (their first hit), "A Song for You," " I Need to be in Love" (Karen's favorite), "Yesterday Once More," "Goodbye to Love," "Only Yesterday," etc. That's only the beginning of your trip down the rabbit hole!
The Carpenters were mainly just Richard and Karen, brother and sister, with changing musicians for tours and clips like this one. They were not really "a band".
I remember when I was growing up, there was a tv show that I used to watch and the theme song was by the Carpenters, it was my introduction to Karen's beautiful voice. All these years later and I don't like listening to the Carpenters anymore, even their happy songs make me sad. It is terrible what happened to her.
You are not hearing the whole band sing. You only hear Richard and Karen. They record 6 parts each and mix them together. However, the band did sing when they performed live. ua-cam.com/video/RS6pIkIImsM/v-deo.htmlsi=DIPVaEudg2EOJ2IA
Carpenters are not a six member group. It’s just Karen and Richard Carpenters (siblings). The other persons in the video were just there as “props” or people who were their backing band members, and they are not related to Karen and Richard. And even if these people were shown to be singing, do note that all the voices you hear are actually of Karen and Richard, who overdubbed their voices to form a choir-like sound.
Hi Bimu! Love that you are continuing on your Carpenters rabbit hole journey. There’s a lot to explore and love. I’m going to give you a suggestion for a live performance with Karen on drums and singing simultaneously. The song is from their second album Close To You and the title is Mr. Guder. It’s a song about Richard’s boss at Disneyland before they became famous. It was on The Tonight Show in 1973 so Karen is 23. The link is to a restored video and looks fantastic! ua-cam.com/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/v-deo.htmlsi=DEnktowj5DOMjTkW My second suggestion is for a recent (March 2, 2024) cover of We’ve Only Just Begun. Something that many people don’t know was. All the harmonies on the vast majority of Carpenters songs was ONLY Richard and Karen layering their vocals. There were exceptions but this song wasn’t one. The video below gives a very good representation of what was done back in the day. But, it can only show so much. There were many more vocal layers (about 20) than could be represented on the screen. It is a great representation, though of what was going on. Besides the fact, in my opinion as an OG Carpenters fan, it’s the best cover I’ve ever seen of a Carpenters song. Now that you have seen the original, you have a basis for the cover. It was produced by James Wilkas who also played multiple instruments and did the male backing vocals (Richard). And it features 20 year old Tori Holub (Ha Lubb) as the lead and backing female (Karen) singer. She is of your generation, I believe. Since this is new I need to tell you there is no autotune or pitch correction used. Nothing that wouldn’t have been used by Richard in production all those years ago except the recording is modern technology, good luck finding working old tape machines. ua-cam.com/video/J95lfJqo9VY/v-deo.htmlsi=wV9I71oA6Rm1stLT I hope you give both a chance to blow your mind, the old and the new. They are worthy of your time. Joe
Since you are not an old fart, like me…..the guy singing with her (both wearing white) is her brother, Richard Carpenter. He is the musical genius that put every one of their songs together, by arrangement. One might think she is singing about her lover, “We have only just begun,” but they are singing about the two of them as a musical duet. In your prior video, you saw her as a singing drummer. But the genius of Richard knew that the song should showcase the couple, hence the white colored clothing, with the remaining group members more blending in with the black back ground. A singer is being showcased, not a drummer that sings. A beautiful talent(s), but with a tragic ending. Thanks for letting me remember back to those times in my early years!
Comments are spot on and Richardxwas and is a musical genius. No doubt. But that voice touches my soul and spirit like no singer has done in my lifetime. For me, given her pitch, phrasing and intonation, the GOAT. You can have your big and brassy, I will take gentle soothing and heavenly everytime. And Richard knew it, that is why he brought her from behind her beloved drums. And an angel blossomed. And yes, so sadly, gone way to soon. 😢❤
Karen had a wonderful voice, but......for me the best ever female voice is that of the late great Sandy Denny. Look her up solo or part of Fairport Convention or Fotheringay.

Karen has such a deep voice, grace and strengh

This song was huge for weddings, graduations in that day.
For All We Know, very underrated song of theirs. I still have the 45 RPM.

You need to listen to the last song she ever recorded.... "Now"
I listened to this song yesterday and I had a similar reaction of amazement! Great video my friend 😁
They are so, so, so good. Unreal.
Excellent Choice😊 Thank u.

Also, along the same line, "A Song For You".
@@rayfaircloth8253 yes, that's another great one!
Thank you again for this Carpenters song. I hope you would also react to their song, "Top of The World" - Thank you. Peace.
- "There's something about 'Carpenters'."...
KARENS' VOICE + RICHARD'S ARRANGING

Next should be their #1 song, "Close to You."

The Carpenters had more no. 1 hits than The Beatles and Elvis. Karen’s amazing gorgeous voice and Richard’s composition. ❤❤
Check out The Three Degrees, When Will I See You Again

The top rated song by the Carpenters is, strangely, Mr. Postman.
"So much of life ahead" but Karen was taken from us much too early.
