This song was written by the great Paul Williams as a jingle for a bank commercial. Richard contact Paul and asked if he could write another verse. The rest is history.
Karen Carpenters beautiful velvet voice and The Carpenters beautifully arranged music with wonderful lyrics and smooth harmonies defined the late 60’s and early 70’s , you can hear there influence in a lot of songs from that era. Hear voice is something beautiful that I never tire of hearing , and she can Rest In Peace knowing she left us with an amazing catalog of musical masterpieces .

When I was a teen in the '70s, I listened to Yes, Rush, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and other popular rock bands, but my guilty pleasure was Carpenters music. Karen's voice was magical and the music fit her voice. This song is terrific, and that one section where you reacted strongly to their harmonizing is one of the most beautiful sections of music ever. Simply gorgeous! Thanks.
“Guilty pleasure” is, unfortunately, what the Carpenters were to us too-cool-for-school ‘tweens, teens & 20-somethings - who didn’t know how to appreciate music, or ignore the naysayers. But hey; *somebody* was obviously buying their music, big-time!

This was the wedding Song to have! I grew up listening to the Carpenters and wanting to be Karen Carpenter. It’s a shame that we lost her so young. If only she knew how beautiful and talented she was.

She went to one voice lesson, and at the end of the lesson the teacher said “you don’t need me”
Paul Williams, one of the most unlikely looking fellows you'd ever see, wrote this amazing song and it was truly her best work. It's almost as if he wrote it for her. He also wrote "Rainy days and Mondays" which also was one of her best works.

Harri, I'm very happy to see you get back to The Carpenters! They are in a class by themselves, and I daresay there's no voice more comforting in this world (other than our mothers') than Karen's. I just closed my eyes while listening to this song and was transported back to when I was 11 years old in 1970. I was crying like a baby because Karen’s voice was so beautiful and the fact that she is no longer with us.

The Tambourine Master LOL
Almost every reactor has mentioned the man playing the tambourine, but they all don't mention that he plays clarinet and sings backing vocals.
The credits for the song have Doug Strawn playing clarinet, two others playing woodwinds. I'm not saying this is who he is, that was in the studio.
This video was made for television, and there's no mention if they are the same ones from the studio. There were nine in the studio but only six in the video.
I'll throw out one request that no reactor has done yet.
Sing - which was done for Sesame Street with a children's choir as background singers. For that recording, Doug Strawn is listed as Tambourine and Triangle, so you never know.
Yes Harri, Karen Carpenter was one of the best voices of a golden age of voices. Joni, Carol, Joan, Carly, Melanie, Janis, but Karen is something special.

The opening to this song made me emotional as a little kid and it has hit me the same every time I’ve listened since ❤️.

Suggestion for next Carpenters is "Goodbye to Love" (album version, not live.) Its got a great guitar solo at the end. One of their best.

Richard Carpenter the first verse of this song on the bank commercial Andy called up John Williams and asked him if there was any more to the song and the rest is history
So glad you did another Carpenters Harri! Always love watching you. How about a Beatles cover the Beatles liked more than THEIR version? Richard turned a catchy, upbeat tune into a poignant ballad. We get to hear Karen sigh in this one. "Ticket to Ride." As a second "cover" suggestion, that I like better than the original, "Desperado" was given the treatment by Richard, which ended up making an already pretty song into an emotional ride.
Give me the original Beatles version over any cover any time.

Imagine, for a moment, Angelina Jordan's arrangement and performance of this song. AJ and Karen are right in the same range, with the same rich alto tone. AJ could remind everyone why Karen was one of the very best female vocalists.
