She was so popular and loved from Day 1. I m 75 today and enjoy her music today as much as I did 41 years ago before she passed.
This song, written by Paul Williams, was used in a bank commercial. Richard Carpenter asked Williams if he had a full-length version of the song that he and his sister could use as a single.
And the funny this is that he did not have a full-length version at the time but he said "of course I do", hung up and wrote the rest of the song right then and there🤣
He was an amazing musician....but I don't know how amazing he and the rest of the family were when it came to Karen's health concerns (anorexia nervousa and possible bulimia). Having said that, in the '70's, Karen's condition was not that well known or diagnosed.
I'm 74 years old and this year should be our 50th wedding anniversary. Been with my wife since 1967. She passed in 2020. Karen's voice kept me sane. She made me cry so many times. One of my favorite songs of her is One Love.
When music had no autotune. When the record companies didn’t worry because the individuals that were singing were magnificent. It was a different time for music.
Karen's voice was a gift form The Father. I don't know her beliefs but i like to think she is with The One who gave her that gift. I hope someday to hear it again.

This is the song my Senior High School class walked in to on our last school auditorium ceremony. 1976, The Bicentennial Year. Man, those were good times.
This was written for a bank commercial that Richard heard on the television. After the Carpenters were done with it, it became a very popular wedding song.
Richard Carpenter wrote songs, yes. He also did all the arrangements for the Carpenters. He was a perfectionist. He also had an ear for picking the right material for his sister's voice. However, this song was written by Paul Williams and it was a jingle for a Bank commercial (Crocker Bank). Richard Carpenter heard the jingle and recognized Paul Williams' singing voice in the jingle. Richard Carpenter said to himself, "This is a hit" and he called up Paul Williams and asked him if there was a full version of the song. Paul Williams would have said "Yes", even if there wasn't a full version because getting a Carpenters record was a big deal back then . . . and the rest of course was history. Yes, this song was played as the first dance between a bride and groom at a lot of weddings back in the early 70s. Beautiful song.
No auto tune. No pitch correction. The only voices you hear are Karen and Richard. Richard perfected the art of overdubbing/ layering voices and the result speaks for itself. Karen was incredible - they called her “ one take Karen “
Of all their hits, this really is their signature song. It even made Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. And I like the fact that you gave us your own personal reflection on this one.

Richard worked out the rest and turned it into a timeless hit. We've only just begun was the picture of a couple getting married and starting life together.
It was the first song for the bride and groom to dance to at the 3 weddings in 1972 at which I was a bridesmaid. All 3 newlyweds felt this was 'their song'.

78 yr old white musician, played music forever, Karen's voice makes me melt, what a gift, ENJOY YOUR REACTIONS, Rainey days And mondays, Solitaire very deep, " A Song for you"
At almost 63, I’ve been listening to this song released August 21, 1970-just before I turned 9 years old. Back then it was just a really good song by the Carpenters. Today, after 44 years of marriage (at beginning of October) the words have REAL meaning. You are 100%, marriage is NOT easy. It has its ups and downs, good times and not so good. I have said more than once (many times, actually) that I will ALWAYS love my husband, but there are times that I do not like him very much. I’m sure he feels the same about me.😁
I loved the Carpenters since I was a kid. My parents had a record - this music is at the core of everything that is truthfully our real longings and what makes a positive life.
Grew up with the Carpenters, the first time I heard them was in grade school. Don't think my childhood would have been the same without their great music. Karen didn't even want to sing or be upfront, she just wanted to be in the background playing her drums, how ironic! That would have been a tremendous loss for all of us. We were so spoiled in the 60's and 70's, the best eras of music there is.
It's the heartfelt simplicity of it. She didn't have to vocal acrobatics to stop people in their tracks. Her voice is one of those that once you hear it, you never forget it. I love On Top Of The World and many more.
I had a cousin in MA who ran away from home with his girlfriend at 16. He once told me that this was THEIR song during that adventure. Could never pick a better tune!
This is how magical, emotional and powerful Karen's voice was. Karen is my all time favorite female vocalist, and her voice still brings tears to my eyes all these years later.
This was our wedding song in 1977. It's especially poignant to look back over 47 years of marriage and all the life we've lived together: the ups and downs, the births of our babies and grandbabies, losing parents and seeing one another through surgeries, buying our first home and our dream home...every day is a new beginning and yet when we started, we had no idea what was in store. All we knew was we would be together through it all.
Sadly, Karen's own marriage in 1980 ended tragically only just several months after having reluctantly said " I do" . She found out that her fiance lied to her about wanting to have children which he knew was very important to her. He never told her about his vasectomy until just a few days before the wedding. Karen obviously felt betrayed and wanted to cancel the wedding. However, she still followed the advice of her mother and still married him. Once married, her spouse used Karen like his own personal bank account living way beyond his means asking her for carry around money, sometimes taking as much as $50,000 or more at a time from her. He was allegedly cruel to her and belittled her especially regarding her weight loss. In November 1981, she filed for divorce after 14 months. Karen fought valiantly to come back from this failed marriage and even her family hoped and prayed that her mental and physical health would continuously improve. Her last recorded major hit can be seen as a live rendition of "Touch Me When We're Dancing" in 1981 and surprisingly the B side of that single called "Because We Are in Love" was actually used by Karen as her own wedding song. How very tragic when you think about it.
@@jwayne7400 Karen was very career focused most of her life. The one love she knew she could always count on was her fans. I only wish she could have learned to love herself just as much.
