I'll start with the positives...
Beautiful tone and control and at times very similar to Karen.
One thing that's very different because as much as I love Karen's voice Karen almost causes me discomfort when she does some of her low notes with all tone and very little breathiness... It gets into my chest and it's almost too much.
Once again Karen is my favorite female singer besides my mom who has very similar tonal qualities as well.
The woman doing the cover uses a little more breathiness in her low notes which causes me less tension in my chest but at the same time it's what makes Karen so unique besides her vocal fry and her overall beautiful and flawless tone and delivery...
No one can never be someone else nor should they be but what a great job 💜

Karen had more practice at being Karen than Tori did. In another year or two, we might well have a better unique sound. In fact when she sings other artists songs, she's a significant improvement over the original.

Did you not watch the video? Tori's voice is not only similar its on par with Karen's and that's totally ok. If someone else sounds similar and is just as good as Karen it just means more greatness not less. The one of a kind beauty that is Tori's voice in no way diminishes the the one of a kind beautiful greatness that was Karen's voice.

In the Philippines we also have a Karen voice alike in 1970s her name Claire Dela Fuente and sings Filipino songs. Discovered when she sang in a cigarette commercial. We thought she was Karen. Claire had the opportunity to meet Richard Carpenter and wept tears of joy. Richard allowed her to sing remake of a song he wrote for Dusty Springfield Something in your eyes. I assume this song was meant for Karen. It was a hit in Philippines.

Karen's voice has just a bit more body or low/mid. May not be worth the comment as that could easily be a anomaly created on "mix down".
I completely understand the comments, but I say it is good to give this a standing ovation just for coming close. She did come VERY close. Anyone who does this just needs to understand that people put Karen in a category of untouchable. I say bravo and you have a gorgeous sound. PS This coming from the fan club of Karen. She is my favorite female voice.

1) From a technical standpoint: Very clever, very impressive.
2) From a musical standpoint: Wow! This young lady sounds like Karen Carpenter, and that is about the highest compliment I can give a singer. Karen's was a voice for the ages, and Ms. Holub really captures that sound beautifully. Brava! (And many props to the musicians/tech folks as well, because they nailed it too.)
I have and - will always believe, the greatest female singers are those with a deep, rich alto voice.
Karen herself said the low notes are where the money is.
Easier to the ears also.

I'm not sure that having a deep rich alto voice is a criteria for greatness, but I can say they are my favorites.
Two distinct voices, both nearly identical styles. Loved the split channel comparison. Tori is something very special.
Noticeable though that this has mostly Karen's voice. There are bits where TH can sound a bit like Karen (more so than most tribute artistes) but if you listen to the whole of her versions it becomes very obvious that she does not have the sustained control, depth, passion and pitch perfection that Karen had. Of course it's unfair to criticise anyone for not being able to match Karen - that's an impossible standard. We don't get many angels per millennium.

One of a kind
I was the youngest of 5 kids. My older sister played the Carpenters all the time. I was a teen in the 80s so was more of a hair band music guy, but Karen Carpenters voice did (and still does) relax me and takes me back to my child days. i think of Brady Bunch, playing in the yard and the excitement of an approaching Christmas when I hear her voice.
Tori, you are a sweet heart and a wonderfull singer. Thank you to honor the talents of the most beutifull voice that i have ever heard. I listened with tears in my eyes. Specially knowing after many years the terrible circunstances of her death. The sensibilty of persons like you, make the world a better place in the current dark times. God bless you ❤.

Midrange is almost identical...lower register...I feel like Karen's voice is "wider" if that makes any sense at all. What a beautiful and incredible tribute this is...thank you and keep 'em coming
I agree. I think that Karen's voice is just a teeny tiny bit deeper. If you really pay attention, you can tell. However, it is so close that you wouldn't know it if you weren't paying attention. I never thought there was a person alive that could sing like Karen. Even so, there's only one Karen Carpenter
@@angelamwatts agreed. Karen had a slightly lower register and more resonance to her voice, a little smoother as well, but Tori is the closest I've heard of anyone trying to imitate Karen Carpenter. Richard should work with her.
@alecepting1371 I agree with you. I doubt that Richard will work with her, though, because it might be too painful for him. Karen was his sister, and her death was very painful for him and the family. He's also much older now and probably is retired. It's not like when Chicago lost Terry Kath. They weren't related, and the band went on. There's another singer in the U.K. who also sounds like Karen, but Richard has shown no interest. I think that Tori should try to create her own style. She definitely has the talent to do it.
Take for example Susan Boyle. She loved Elaine Paige and was inspired by her. However, Susan Boyle became famous because she sings like Susan Boyle, not like Elaine Paige. Adele, Celion Dion, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland have their own individual style. That's what Tori should focus on.

Outstanding on this song. Reminds me when I would watch or listen to The Carpenters. Seen an analysis on a channel showing no autotune or pitch correction on this take only true talent, great putting together this video, and great vocal true to Karen and Richard.
Absolutely love how you edited this!. I heard the cover a few days ago, and marveled at the tonal similarities in Tori's voice. This provides a direct comparison. Tori and Jim did an awesome job.

Years ago we were on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a you lady from somewhere in Central America that was unbelievable doing Carpenters music. Her mom and dad did the musical backup. She was selling cds and I’ve kick my tail ever since for not buying all 3…..not to take anything from this you lady, but I think the girl on the boat was just as good.
We were married in 1970 and this song was top of the charts. It was a sad day that Karen lost her battle to a disease so little was know about. You have a beautiful voice and I hope to hear more of your work soon and wish you the very best of luck.

I am a die hard Karen Fan. Often I refuse to listen to others sing her stuff because it's sacrilege for me. However, I can't get over your voice. I can hear a very subtle difference in some lower tones, but I will shamefully admit that where they play the cover music with the original video, at first I didn't see it said Cover and I thought it was Karen the first time around I listened to it. While I am not sure how I feel about it because I'll never be able to see Karen and there will never be another Karen, I get comfort out of listening to you because of that very same thing. You no doubt channel Karen and how blessed are you that. you do. I hope you keep singing and do some original stuff with the same kind of music that Richard created for Karen. Hey, maybe he can even do some arrangements for you. Well done Tori. Well done.

I’ve been following Tori since October and it’s been a goosebumps ride. Now add Jim to the mix and wow! I used my headphones after my initial watch on my TV and HT equipment. So close it’s amazing. ❤

Karen Carpenter's voice hits more of the base frequencies, so I can actually tell them apart. I do admit it's pretty close.
Look for Tori’s Never Been Mellow cover on UA-cam. She can go way higher than Kacie ever did. So she skews higher. She’s an Alto. Ticket To Ride for the lowest I’ve heard from her.
I though lower mids,,,,,could be the mic. The Carpenters were recording on the best analog gear at A&M records….Tori is using a relatively high end Blue,,,,but the Neumanns are way higher quality

Tori...my God, can you sing beautifully...just like Karen...all you need now, is Richard to sing with you...wish I could...best I can do is whistle to that gorgeous voice of yours!!
It seems in my mind that Tori is pushing more air through her vocal cords which softens her tone compared to Karen, but she is dang close to being a dead ringer for Karen.
Maybe that’s it. Any difference is very subtle. She did such a beautiful job with this song.
Good observation. Tori is more breathy. More in the head voice where Karen is more chest voice and therefore more pure sounding and it seems effortless.

good attempt. Karen's voice had a timbre devoid of falsetto, as she was contralto. She was able to stay totally in modal voice, & produce high amounts of overtones in a wide range of volumes. She could also modulate the amount of overtones during a sustained note. Not easy things to do

Wonderful side by side comparison. The blend is so good that you have to listen to hear the differences. They did a brilliant job of copying the accompaniment and backing vocals layer by layer. And when you play them together there's twice the layering. That alone sounds amazing! Kudos for the synchronization work you did on this!
Tori is just absolutely magnificent. A singer with a classically beautiful voice for our time. And refreshingly with no vocal or post production embellishments. Just pure beautiful singing.
I'm a classically trained singer with a good understanding of vocal technique and interpretation. It's not really fair to compare these singers. But, for Tori's benefit I'll share a couple observations. Karen had just a little more natural metal and sigh in her voice. And that's absolutely unique to her. But she was also is a little more vocally and emotionally free. She wasn't afraid of reaching deep into her chest voice, rise to a powerful Fortissimo from a soft Pianissimo, or crack a little to add emotion to her singing. She really reached into her full emotional toolbox to bare her soul while consistently having perfect legato vocal technique. That combination is what made her so special.
Tori is clearly holding back a little and being careful. She just has to let go and be completely herself to go to the next level. We'll love her for that. She is every bit as talented as Karen was at the same age and has perfect technique. I'm looking forward to hearing her perform music that is written especially for her, and for her own unique sound and expression to come forward. I can't wait to hear what she can do completely unchained from covers and their expectations. But this fantastic one got her noticed by a lot of people. I wonder if Richard would consider writing one more song for this special singer. Imagine. He couldn't find a better muse. Just a thought.
Tori is very good but one thing about Karen is I heard most of her vocal tracks were one take recordings. She brought it EVERY time. I have watched a lot of her concert videos and she sounded exactly like the records. And don't forget she started as a top notch drummer and had to be coaxed to get in front of the band and ultimately give up the drums. Is copying Karen like an artist making a hard to tell copy of an original work of art? Karen was an original once in a lifetime singer but she is gone so someone like Tori can keep that memory alive.

I honestly think this is because of how each of their voices were mixed. If you were to take a little mid and bass tones out of Tori's voice, or vice versa, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Also, the layering of Tori's voice during the non harmonizing parts kind of throws it off, imho. Still cool, but not quite the same as Karen.
Tori is a very good singer, but yes, I notice hundreds of differences! Karen was unique, but also there is no point in comparing. The cover is beautiful, done with great respect for the original version, and that seems to me to be what's really important.

Tori's voice is a dead ringer for KC's voice. Tori is truly amazing. That said, where will she go from here? Maybe more Carpenter's covers? New compositions? Collaborations with Richard Carpenter? I , for one, would love hearing more of Tori's beautiful voice? Please figure out a way to make this happen!
The problem is that Tori is copying another vocalist's voice. In order to be recognized as a singing star like Adele, Barbra Streisand, Celion Dion, you have to be an original artist. This is a copy, not an original talent.

Ms. Holub is a fine singer (to my untutored ear), but she doesn't achieve the richness and warmth that Karen Carpenter had. Of course, neither do I. Still, she does a great job.
To my ears, Tori actually sounds richer and warmer than Karen.

Anybody that says Tori doesn't sound like the great Karen Carpenter, doesn't have any knowledge of music. I have heard a few that were close, including one from Japan that sang I Know I Need to Be In Love in front of Richard, and it was so close. Tori's voice is almost an exact match of Karen's great voice. It is scary.
It is not even close. Karen's voice is way more fuller and has higher octaves. Also, with current technology, you have no idea how manipulated Tori voice is.
Majored in music and there is a very noticeable difference. Only mentioned the major in response to 'knowledge of music'. Both are excellent but different. However, IMHO, no one has ever covered a song Karen sang better than Karen. Not that I have heard, anyway.
