Karen had more practice at being Karen than Tori did. In another year or two, we might well have a better unique sound. In fact when she sings other artists songs, she's a significant improvement over the original.
1) From a technical standpoint: Very clever, very impressive. 2) From a musical standpoint: Wow! This young lady sounds like Karen Carpenter, and that is about the highest compliment I can give a singer. Karen's was a voice for the ages, and Ms. Holub really captures that sound beautifully. I'll start with the positives... Beautiful tone and control and at times very similar to Karen. One thing that's very different because as much as I love Karen's voice Karen almost causes me discomfort when she does some of her low notes with all tone and very little breathiness... It gets into my chest and it's almost too much. Once again Karen is my favorite female singer besides my mom who has very similar tonal qualities as well. The woman doing the cover uses a little more breathiness in her low notes which causes me less tension in my chest but at the same time it's what makes Karen so unique besides her vocal fry and her overall beautiful and flawless tone and delivery... No one can never be someone else nor should they be but what a great job 💜

Claire had the opportunity to meet Richard Carpenter and wept tears of joy. Richard allowed her to sing remake of a song he wrote for Dusty Springfield Something in your eyes. I assume this song was meant for Karen. It was a hit in Philippines.
Noticeable though that this has mostly Karen's voice. There are bits where TH can sound a bit like Karen (more so than most tribute artistes) but if you listen to the whole of her versions it becomes very obvious that she does not have the sustained control, depth, passion and pitch perfection that Karen had. Of course it's unfair to criticise anyone for not being able to match Karen - that's an impossible standard. We don't get many angels per millennium.

I was the youngest of 5 kids. My older sister played the Carpenters all the time. I was a teen in the 80s so was more of a hair band music guy, but Karen Carpenters voice did (and still does) relax me and takes me back to my child days. i think of Brady Bunch, playing in the yard and the excitement of an approaching Christmas when I hear her voice.

WOW WOW WOW, I have just been blown away. To hear Karen sing, and then Tori......wow just wow. Tori is spot on. Ive listened to her sing before and thought how brilliant she is, but alongside Karen aswell.........TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY! And the musicians playing alongside her were amazing aswell.

I agree. I think that Karen's voice is just a teeny tiny bit deeper. If you really pay attention, you can tell. However, it is so close that you wouldn't know it if you weren't paying attention. I never thought there was a person alive that could sing like Karen. Even so, there's only one Karen Carpenter

Karen was his sister, and her death was very painful for him and the family. He's also much older now and probably is retired. It's not like when Chicago lost Terry Kath. They weren't related, and the band went on. There's another singer in the U.K. who also sounds like Karen, but Richard has shown no interest. I think that Tori should try to create her own style. She definitely has the talent to do it. Take for example Susan Boyle. She loved Elaine Paige and was inspired by her. However, Susan Boyle became famous because she sings like Susan Boyle, not like Elaine Paige. Adele, Celion Dion, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland have their own individual style. That's what Tori should focus on.

If someone else sounds similar and is just as good as Karen it just means more greatness not less. Years ago we were on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a you lady from somewhere in Central America that was unbelievable doing Carpenters music. Her mom and dad did the musical backup. She was selling cds and I’ve kick my tail ever since for not buying all 3…..not to take anything from this you lady, but I think the girl on the boat was just as good.

Tori's voice is good but Karen was galactic worlds apart in her depth of voice and musical intuition. Just listen and feel those waves of delayed syncopation in the opening lines. What incredible talent KC had. This is why singers all over the world were envious of her talent. It's incomparable. Phenomenal.

I am a die hard Karen Fan. Often I refuse to listen to others sing her stuff because it's sacrilege for me. However, I can't get over your voice. I can hear a very subtle difference in some lower tones, but I will shamefully admit that where they play the cover music with the original video, at first I didn't see it said Cover and I thought it was Karen the first time around I listened to it. While I am not sure how I feel about it because I'll never be able to see Karen and there will never be another Karen, I get comfort out of listening to you because of that very same thing. You no doubt channel Karen and how blessed are you that. you do. I hope you keep singing and do some original stuff with the same kind of music that Richard created for Karen. The biggest difference i hear is that Karen and Richard make more use of dynamics. They also project their voice past their teeth. Signs of their years in choir and live performances.

Last winter, I had the honor of meeting Paul Williams at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. I hope and pray that he and Richard, wherever he is, gets to see this, and hopefully, the legacy of one of the greatest voices in pop music that left way too soon, can be honored in a time when we need the wonderful songs she sang!
Look for Tori’s Never Been Mellow cover on UA-cam. She can go way higher than Kacie ever did. So she skews higher. She’s an Alto. Ticket To Ride for the lowest I’ve heard from her.
Wonderful side by side comparison. The blend is so good that you have to listen to hear the differences. They did a brilliant job of copying the accompaniment and backing vocals layer by layer. And when you play them together there's twice the layering. That alone sounds amazing! Kudos for the synchronization work you did on this! Tori is just absolutely magnificent. A singer with a classically beautiful voice for our time. And refreshingly with no vocal or post production embellishments. Just pure beautiful singing. I'm a classically trained singer with a good understanding of vocal technique and interpretation. It's not really fair to compare these singers. But, for Tori's benefit I'll share a couple observations. Karen had just a little more natural metal and sigh in her voice. And that's absolutely unique to her. But she was also is a little more vocally and emotionally free. She wasn't afraid of reaching deep into her chest voice, rise to a powerful Fortissimo from a soft Pianissimo, or crack a little to add emotion to her singing. She really reached into her full emotional toolbox to bare her soul while consistently having perfect legato vocal technique. That combination is what made her so special. Tori is clearly holding back a little and being careful. She just has to let go and be completely herself to go to the next level. We'll love her for that. She is every bit as talented as Karen was at the same age and has perfect technique. I'm looking forward to hearing her perform music that is written especially for her, and for her own unique sound and expression to come forward. I can't wait to hear what she can do completely unchained from covers and their expectations. But this fantastic one got her noticed by a lot of people. I wonder if Richard would consider writing one more song for this special singer. Imagine. He couldn't find a better muse. Just a thought.

good attempt. Karen's voice had a timbre devoid of falsetto, as she was contralto. She was able to stay totally in modal voice, & produce high amounts of overtones in a wide range of volumes. She could also modulate the amount of overtones during a sustained note. Not easy things to do

I agree. I think that Karen's voice is just a teeny tiny bit deeper. If you really pay attention, you can tell. However, it is so close that you wouldn't know it if you weren't paying attention. I never thought there was a person alive that could sing like Karen. Even so, there's only one Karen Carpenter
@@angelamwatts agreed. Karen had a slightly lower register and more resonance to her voice, a little smoother as well, but Tori is the closest I've heard of anyone trying to imitate Karen Carpenter. Richard should work with her.
@alecepting1371 I agree with you. I doubt that Richard will work with her, though, because it might be too painful for him. Karen was his sister, and her death was very painful for him and the family. He's also much older now and probably is retired. It's not like when Chicago lost Terry Kath. They weren't related, and the band went on. There's another singer in the U.K. who also sounds like Karen, but Richard has shown no interest. I think that Tori should try to create her own style. She definitely has the talent to do it.
Take for example Susan Boyle. She loved Elaine Paige and was inspired by her. However, Susan Boyle became famous because she sings like Susan Boyle, not like Elaine Paige. Adele, Celion Dion, Barbra Streisand, Judy Garland have their own individual style. That's what Tori should focus on.

Did you not watch the video? Tori's voice is not only similar its on par with Karen's and that's totally ok. If someone else sounds similar and is just as good as Karen it just means more greatness not less. The one of a kind beauty that is Tori's voice in no way diminishes the the one of a kind beautiful greatness that was Karen's voice.

Saw them concert in london in the 70s absolutely brilliant .
Years ago we were on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with a you lady from somewhere in Central America that was unbelievable doing Carpenters music. Her mom and dad did the musical backup. She was selling cds and I’ve kick my tail ever since for not buying all 3…..not to take anything from this you lady, but I think the girl on the boat was just as good.
Karen had the most pure, pitch perfect voice I've ever heard. This gal does a GREAT job with her cover!

Tori's voice is good but Karen was galactic worlds apart in her depth of voice and musical intuition. Just listen and feel those waves of delayed syncopation in the opening lines. What incredible talent KC had. This is why singers all over the world were envious of her talent. It's incomparable. Phenomenal.

Quite a talented young lady who has relatively recently (at least in my perspective, I'm in my 60s) discovered the wonderfulness of Karen Carpenter! I hope to hear much more from her, but more importantly, I hope many many people of the younger generations finally wake up to recognize the value of beautiful music like this. What's more, we almost desperately NEED this type of music back in our society, in order to help bring humanity back from the brink of disaster! Karen's voice has just a bit more body or low/mid. May not be worth the comment as that could easily be a anomaly created on "mix down".
I completely understand the comments, but I say it is good to give this a standing ovation just for coming close. She did come VERY close. Anyone who does this just needs to understand that people put Karen in a category of untouchable. I say bravo and you have a gorgeous sound. PS This coming from the fan club of Karen. First time I heard Tori. She has a great voice! She can do some great original songs and good Carpenters covers.

I am a die hard Karen Fan. Often I refuse to listen to others sing her stuff because it's sacrilege for me. However, I can't get over your voice. I can hear a very subtle difference in some lower tones, but I will shamefully admit that where they play the cover music with the original video, at first I didn't see it said Cover and I thought it was Karen the first time around I listened to it. While I am not sure how I feel about it because I'll never be able to see Karen and there will never be another Karen, I get comfort out of listening to you because of that very same thing. You no doubt channel Karen and how blessed are you that. you do. I hope you keep singing and do some original stuff with the same kind of music that Richard created for Karen. Hey, maybe he can even do some arrangements for you. Well done Tori. Well done.

The biggest difference i hear is that Karen and Richard make more use of dynamics. They also project their voice past their teeth. Signs of their years in choir and live performances.

The difference is Tori typically lacks the sharper, brighter tone in the higher and louder notes.
Last winter, I had the honor of meeting Paul Williams at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. I hope and pray that he and Richard, wherever he is, gets to see this, and hopefully, the legacy of one of the greatest voices in pop music that left way too soon, can be honored in a time when we need the wonderful songs she sang!
Karen Carpenter's voice hits more of the base frequencies, so I can actually tell them apart. I do admit it's pretty close.
Look for Tori’s Never Been Mellow cover on UA-cam. She can go way higher than Kacie ever did. So she skews higher. She’s an Alto. Ticket To Ride for the lowest I’ve heard from her.

Wonderful side by side comparison. The blend is so good that you have to listen to hear the differences. They did a brilliant job of copying the accompaniment and backing vocals layer by layer. And when you play them together there's twice the layering. That alone sounds amazing! Kudos for the synchronization work you did on this!
Tori is just absolutely magnificent. A singer with a classically beautiful voice for our time. And refreshingly with no vocal or post production embellishments. Just pure beautiful singing.
I'm a classically trained singer with a good understanding of vocal technique and interpretation. It's not really fair to compare these singers. But, for Tori's benefit I'll share a couple observations. Karen had just a little more natural metal and sigh in her voice. And that's absolutely unique to her. But she was also is a little more vocally and emotionally free. She wasn't afraid of reaching deep into her chest voice, rise to a powerful Fortissimo from a soft Pianissimo, or crack a little to add emotion to her singing. She really reached into her full emotional toolbox to bare her soul while consistently having perfect legato vocal technique. That combination is what made her so special.
Tori is clearly holding back a little and being careful. She just has to let go and be completely herself to go to the next level. We'll love her for that. She is every bit as talented as Karen was at the same age and has perfect technique. I'm looking forward to hearing her perform music that is written especially for her, and for her own unique sound and expression to come forward. I can't wait to hear what she can do completely unchained from covers and their expectations. But this fantastic one got her noticed by a lot of people. I wonder if Richard would consider writing one more song for this special singer. Imagine. He couldn't find a better muse. Just a thought.

good attempt. Karen's voice had a timbre devoid of falsetto, as she was contralto. She was able to stay totally in modal voice, & produce high amounts of overtones in a wide range of volumes. She could also modulate the amount of overtones during a sustained note. Not easy things to do
