I was on stage with Karen Carpenter once. I was a kid, but they did a song called Sing a Song where they use a children's choir in the chorus. My school provided the children's choir for their concert in my town and I was in the choir, so I was on stage with them during that one song! 1973 I think.

A reviewer with Rolling Stone Magazine once said, "Karen Carpenter's voice is like the sound of a lover whispering in your ear." I can't find any flaw in that statement. Voice of an angel.... gone too soon! RIP Karen.
Nor can I. What an absolutely brilliant description. For me, I have always said this is what God's angels sound like in heaven, only in this earthly realm, and for almost 33 years. Loved you and miss you still to this day, but your music lives in to mesmerize new generations. Thank you, God, for sharing Karen with us, if only for a short time.❤❤❤❤
People used to laugh at any man who admitted to liking The Carpenters, paticularly if they spotted the album on the shelves. But I couldn't care less; that song has sent shivers down my spine since the day it was released
Such a brilliantly constructed pop song, with so many complex things happening musically. Karen sounds especially gorgeous on those low, intimate verses.
It's so awesome to see someone from the younger generation come to appreciate and fall in love with the music that is Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard. They truly were special. If you haven't listened to it yet, you really MUST listen to Superstar, my all-time favorite Carpenters song.
While it is understandable that we focus on Karen's voice. After all it ranks at the top of all female pop artists. But her brother's ability to arrange and score these songs is incredible. I particularly enjoy his use of the oboe and harmonica in many songs His ability to find the right instrument to convey a mood is outstanding.
My reaction to your reaction: tears of joy in my eyes... My reaction to this song: it's always been one of my favorite Carpenters' songs. "Only Yesterday" should have gone to #1 on Billboard Hot 100, but #4 isn't bad!
love your reactions, also that you are open to so many different types of music and appreciate them for what they are.Karen had a once in a generation type of voice and you clearly know that, keep expanding your sheer joy and pleasure at hearing all types of music,it is a great joy to watch you.
I hope you get the chance to watch the video. The outdoor footage was filmed at Huntington Library Gardens in San Marino, California, and featured some footage of a red moon bridge, which was roped off to the general public in the Japanese Garden there. Should do their remake of "Please Mr. Postman" from this album, their third and final #1 on the Hot 100. The video for that was filmed at Disneyland, the first time they'd allowed an artist to do that there. Karen adored Mickey Mouse.
She hit that F# right on the button at the start of the song. She was known as "one take Karen" in the studio for her singing abilities. She was a true alto with full control through her entire vocal range. Such a powerful and soulful voice.
You really should hear their astounding version of “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina” along with its prelude “On The Balcony Of The Casa Rosada,” from the musical EVITA, recorded in 1977 when it was still only a London stage musical, before it became a Broadway sensation. They give it the full treatment with chorus, orchestra, and Karen’s superlative performance. 🎭 ❤
Great reaction. Bravo. Great song. Horizon is my favorite album. And it has my favorite Carpenter’s song, “I Can Dream, Can’t I.” It showcases that Karen could sing anything. IMHO, the GOAT.
Horizon is an awesome album. I play that thing from start to finish quite often. Each piece is a joy to listen to, and the bookends of Aurora and Eventide are beautiful.
Oh, how I wish Karen could have seen your joy - and fun - while listening to her have her way with the tune and lyrics!! Maybe she did from above. If so, it was with a huge smile. 😊
You should do side 2 of their Now And Then Album. It starts off with, Yesterday Once More and then goes through a bunch of their favourite oldies songs. I know it's a bit long but you can't go wrong and you would love it.
Thanks so much, Salvo! I had not heard this one in so long... forgot how great it was... (besides her low-to-high vocals.. check out heavy on the DRUMS.. don't know if Karen played on this, but we know that was her first love) appreciate your reaction... as always..

Those lyrics in the Karen's voice is... there's no word with power enough to describe how gorgeous the feeling transmited is.... LOVE U KAREN!
Such a brilliant arrangement. For example, Richard added extra overdubbed vocals to "brighter than today" to make it literally sound brighter. What this also is, is a companion piece to The Beatles who sang "Yesterday" about how yesterday was better than today, and here are the Carpenters saying that today is better than yesterday. And yes, it's always sad to hear Karen sing about how no one knew how much pain she was in.
The carpenters, to me, were the best sibling dou to ever grace the music industry! Richard,s musical genius and karen,s golden voice! What a wonderful combination! Their songs are classics and will live until the end of time! Long after their peirs made fun of them for being square in their time! I love it it when nice people get the last laugh!
It was so refreshing to listen to the audio from the album (which I bought years ago), as opposed to watching the video, which every other reactor has done. The video cuts off the last 30 seconds of the song. By the way, about Tony Peluso, he was added in a remix of "I Won't Last a Day Without You." Wasn't on the album. I bought the album, then heard the remix on the radio, and went back to the album, wondering where the wonderful Peluso guitar fills at the ends of phrases went. If you ever do that song, please consider the version that's from the "Singles 1969-1981," which is the remix. Really enjoy how you REALLY listen.
If you can find the 1989 TV movie, "The Karen Carpenter Story," maybe you'd enjoy it, Sal. It makes me happy to see that the great music I was raised on in the 70s lives on.
If its really true about her parents it's a shame they didn't love her as much as we do.41 years she's been gone but it says it all when we are sitting here listening to the songs and reactions from everyone 😅😢
Ohhh if he likes the multitrack harmonies, the neo-Bach stuff on that track will blow his mind...the Close To You album (1970), which has Mr Guder on it, was the purest expression of the Carpenters sound, with the multitracking and the jazz and classical influences.
I’ll add that there is a very recent restoration of a classic performance. 1973 on The Tonight Show. Looks like it aired yesterday(once more?). ua-cam.com/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/v-deo.htmlsi=4jZDWDRnOrtA72Rb .
Salvo, KC's voice IS also the female harmony, as is in all her songs. Born (not trained) with vocal talent not heard since. She died from anorexia after a continuous onset beginning in 1975. Sang while playing drums in many songs. Listen to 'I Can Dream Cant I', a big band type ballad. Unbelievable.
I do believe you will love doing a reaction of Karen Carpenters Make Believe it's your First Time. It's the version off her solo album with just her pure voice and a piano background.
You aren't obviously old enough to remember them on the radio but believe it or not, that guitar solo got them a lot of grief. The hard core fans thought they were selling out with a rock part. I've always loved this song and it's one of my favorites. I actually have pretty much all their albums still today on the original vinyl. Let me also tell you, ine the 70's you didn't say you liked the carpenters. It just wasn’t cool. Im really glad some of your generation can appreciate great music from then. Her brother called her voice "PHONO-GENIC" and Herb Albert said it felt like she was singing only to you and sitting in your lap...
This is exactly the difference between Karen and a lot of other great female vocalists, who shout rather than whisper.
