- Murder in Melbourne looks at the murders of three Irish people over 2012 & 2013 by three criminals released early by the Victoria State Parole Board. Broadcast on RTÉ1 & Channel 9 Australia in 2015.
I have lived in Melbourne all my life. Our justice system is broken. I was brutally beaten and robbed in the CBD by a male and a female. Ambo's came, police came. I made a statement, picked out the guy, he was known to them. Then....NOTHING HAPPENED. He got off, totally free. The powers that be DO NOT CARE about law abiding citizens or visitors. I am SO SORRY for the families and loved one's of these people who died in preventable, violent and completely unnecessary murders. I'd also like to thank Greg Davies for always speaking up for victims of crime.
Similar thing happened to me. The perpetrators the criminals were police informants and so were protected

I am a Melburnian and have lived here for most of my life. I just cried and cried watching this video. I remember all of these stories and how horrified I felt hearing of them on the news. My heart just goes out to these beautiful families and I am so sorry that they have had to go through this. Yes, on the whole, I feel very safe in my city. But time and time again, we hear of people who go on to commit devastating crimes after just being released on parole. It is ludicrous and wrong.
I share your pain: I too, was so sad and cried throughout this video: No body deserves this PREVENTABLE pain.
As a child, I lived in Moe, Victoria for two glorious years.....the thought of any of these crimes being carried out was unthinkable.
I share the disdain of all decent people that we have to suffer the ineptitude of our so-called leaders.... These crimes were preventable: But who will be held responsible?

And it is thus in most of the so-called "Civilised-West" where we continually delude ourselves that habitual criminals with violent tendencies are somehow "Re-deem able"
Tell that to the innocent victims...such as these.... absolutely appalling shoddy governance.... from the top, down.

There should be a law that states harm inflicted on a victim that directly associated with a murder should be charged with attempted murder. The only reason her injuries weren't "categorized as serious" is because her husband stepped in; otherwise, he would have killed her. This is one of the biggest cases of injustice I have ever seen. Just horrible. 😔
Yes it's cruel beyond words the so called justice system victims and their families never ever get closure knowing that these beasts will get out of jail and have a life when their grieving for their precious loved ones who are gone forever it's all wrong
Many sentences in Australia are laughable ... it is time the judges and parole board members were held responsible for any crime resulting from lenient sentence or early parole. Our legal system is ridiculous . Protect the criminals .
homicide rate in Australia is remarkably low, lets not import alien values into this place...whatever they're doing it works to a substantial degree. You are not an expert.

Prisons are overloaded. Very hard to predict when an individual is going to be so desperate that they kill. Crimes involving money for drugs, even more difficult to predict and control.
As a Peninsula local Dermot and Brigitte were my jewellers, they were both the most generous, happy welcoming couple…..Such a shocking tragedy to happen to a wonderful family….such a senseless death…..
This showed how bad the justice system is. Always protect the criminal.

As a Brit who watches loads of crime shows I can say that Australia along with Canada are easily the most disgracefully lenient on violent criminals in terms of sentencing ; its time the judges were held accountable.
Judges can only sentence within the laws of the land. All countries have trouble with criminals and some seem to get off lightly no matter what country they are in.
I am an Australian, and I feel compassion for these honest people who made Australia their happy place🌞. Only to be betrayed by our lax system! Harsher laws Australia... please!!

If it were not for Jill working for the Australian Broadcasting Commission, things would have been different. Because she worked in the Media, the Media really went all out to publicise the case like no other before or since. The Media pressure on the Police was unprecedented. They would not let up. Its a shame such effort is not put into every murder case.
The average Aussie is ashamed when visitors to our country are harmed. Its a personal insult. We need the Death Penalty down here, should never have got rid of it.

It's nice to see the scenery in the stories but these are heartbreaking stories.
I think your idea is sound, if you take a life you should forfeit your own. If you hurt a child in a certain way you should be in jail for life.

The sentences from the UK and Australia always leave me dissatisfied makes me wonder how the people who actually lost loved ones feel if I feel shitty after these ridiculously lenient sentences.
The O'Toole family should not have agreed to a plea deal. The evidence against that murderer was overwhelming. I understand they probably didn't want to go through a trial, but seriously, everyone knows that criminals plead guilty to get a lighter sentence. How did no one inform this family about this????

These stories are so sad. My condolences to the families of the victims. Bridget breaks my heart. Dermot and she were soul mates. I feel if you take a life save for in self defense , or are a repeat offenderyou should never take another free step. So many families would be spared the grief of losing a loved one.

Money issue. Who Would pay That if you Would keep so many for live and where Would you draw the line. Who has to get in for life and who Not? Its not Easy. In this cases maybe Yes with so many prior convictions. But not Always. Ans countries like Australias goal is the Reintegration of those People and Not like in America only punishment. I don’t know how it is in Ireland but i think They have also Not the Same System like America. But the sentence he got now for Robbery and murder together is ridiculous and That After having so kann prior convictions. Yes, we believe in rehabilitation here but how many chances should a person get? The guy who killed the jeweller had over 200 offences against his name. He was clearly so cocky he knew that he would get a slap on the wrist whatever he did.

I have always said that if you want to murder someone go to Australia. They don't really care about the person that was murdered OR their family. You can't rehabilitate someone that is a murderer

As a Canadian, I know our system isn't perfect, but I think that's true in many other countries. I have to say, most of the time our system gets it right. Unfortunately, there will always be some that slip through the cracks.
As a Canadian, our ‘justice’ system is absolutely garbage. Australia appears to doing its best to sink as low as we are, but we are currently still rock bottom of all of the Western countries. If you want to commit a crime, come to Canada! We will tell you how poor and victimized you are by your circumstances, how it’s not your fault, and send you on your merry way.

What judicial system would give a parolee, who murders while out on parole, a 20 year sentence? Didn’t they say each of these murderous violators committed multiple crimes and harm against people; and one committed something like 200 crimes? It sounds like their laws were designed to offer no respect for their victimized citizens. Wait. Here’s a possible way to bring change. He did not get a 20 year sentence, he got life with a 20 year non parole period, does not mean he will be out after 20 years. Judges do not make the law so can only hand down sentences within the laws laid down for them.
Perry spent most part of his teenage in juvenile detention and he had more than 200 convictions for offences by the time he got sentenced in 2014. Sound like 20 years too short for him considering all the criminal offending he has done. At the age of 47, He will be back in our society and possibly could commit another crime again..

Shouldn´t previous convictions weigh on new sentences? Someone who commits horrible crimes like these, is imprisoned and once released commits violent crimes again, should never let out of prison.

2012 Australia - An Irish man settled well in Australia and later he was killed in Australia. The Irish man set up a jewellery shop in Hastings about 45 miles from Melbourne city. One day the shop was robbed and the 64 year old Irish man named Dermott O Toole was killed trying to save his wife Bridget. I remember this murder and the terror and the trauma and the agony and the pain of the victims wife. The killer named Gavin Perry 27 years of age with a criminal history was caught and jailed for 27 years. The parole boards who release killers to the community to kill again should be charged with murder or manslaughter.
The individuals who realised all these people early should be jailed for life
A jewellery store should engage a full time security guard to secure the shop or foil any attempt at robbery.
Watching him wipe his prints off the glass made me sick. When the man walked over to close the door I wished he'd locked the door and closed for the day. It was so creepy and so sad. That man should have gotten the death penalty for stabbing that couple. Just heartbreaking.

This is horrendous, didn’t know about this. This is gut wrenching. I live in North Queensland and visited Melbourne eighteen months ago for the first time and never felt uncomfortable or unsafe. It’s a wonderful city. I’m so sorry this happened to these lovely people 😢
I’ve lived in Melbourne since 1997. In my view it’s not a safe place to live. Crime has increased year on year and the justice system is not handling it. Too many bad eggs are being given bail and parole because the prison system is not resourced to meet demand.
Lived here all my life and the amount of repeat offenders and people on bail committing crimes is unbelievable 😢
There is absolutely nothing wrong with Melbourne itself, there are terrible people all over the world who don't care what they do to anyone and everyone ! and no matter what laws and punishment are dished out it won't stop crimes of all kinds and in any place in the world !
To this day, there has been no accountability from the parole board for letting those monsters out

My heart started breaking hearing that Bridgett & Dermot had met when they were 6, so when the photo was shown at 3:09 i really choked up. I instantly knew it was taken at an airport before she said anything because i have some just like it. Taken 3 years earlier & in a different airport than hers, but strangely enough, the same destination, except Perth, not Melbourne. My dad was transferred when i was 12 & we stayed 3 years. So we left, just as they arrived. Seeing that group shot of family & friends brought on a wave of mixed up emotions. Remembering what i felt then added to the deep sadness of Bridgette's loss. Two years ago, i lost my partner of 15 years, barely 6 weeks after being diagnosed with leukemia. It was an overwhelming shock, made worse by not being allowed to visit because of covid, but at least i had a few weeks to get used to the idea before she died. After spending, literally, a lifetime together, Dermot's death must have been excruciating. Will have to watch this some other time, not a good idea just before bed.
2023 and NOTHING has changed!
Our police services dedicate so much time and skill to apprehend these violent criminals only to have them given light sentences AND released early.

How disheartening to then be called to a violent crime perpetrated by someone who should still be behind bars!
My deepest sympathy for the families left behind and for the police and first responders who have to deal with the aftermath.
My heart bleeds for these families. These murderers should never see the light of day again. How these victims are not up in arms, firstly about these grubs even having been on our streets allowing them to commit these crimes ~~ it just should never happen. Then to receive another slap in the face, particularly Bridget O’toole, when these disgusting humans receive only very small sentences, would make my blood boil !
We have seen this same pattern again and again. Scum bag criminals receive early parole, only to go on and perpetrate the most heinous of crimes against, good, law~abiding citizens. In Queensland, one of the most infamous cases being the murder of Daniel Morcombe. Where is the truth in sentencing ? Why, if the law says, ‘x amount’ of time must be served, why then do we give them, he must serve a percentage of the time, in order to gain parole. You cannot rehabilitate a murderer within a few short years of them behaving like "model prisoners" (Whatever that is supposed to mean?) so why take the risk?
And add to this, my argument, where is the punishment value? You kill someone: You are punished. Be a model prisoner all you like: Society will punish you. Justifiably!
Stop being a "model prisoner" and society will expect you to serve even more years......

I have lost my husband in Melbourne I think due to negligent driving, I couldn't see him because I injured and unconscious. I have a very bad memory of a beautiful city.
I just read up your tragic story and hope you are doing better now. Your right most likely driver was negligent. I hate it how people say accident when generally they don't happen without some form of negligence behaviour. The driver must have been distracted but it would be hard to prove unlike alcohol or drugs. The only other solution is to mandate inside hardwired dashcams. Hopefully the driver got some sort of punishment and the only lesson is to always be aware of surroundings and make sure cars stop before crossing. I notice a lot of people are doing that, they won't cross until cars come to a full stop and I don't blame them. Hope you can visit Antarctica.
Soo sad, at the time l lived not too far away. I heard on the news what happened and we were all soo surprised as Hastings is just a small beach town. It's always the good people go first while lowlifes live on. R.I.P

Couldnt finish watching this. So frustrating to know how judiciary system/members make decisions that causes damage to the very society they ought to protect.

A lot of these people say “they caught him, but it didn’t matter because so and so was dead” or “they gave him 18years but it didn’t matter because this victim wasn’t coming back” .. whatever happened to vengeance? Is it that archaic to wish death on those who take someone you love? I’m not saying I’d repay the act if someone killed someone I loved but I damn well would consider it if they didn’t get life
Vengeance is biblical. It’s part of what makes us human. We should all repay acts of kindness, live by the golden rule and so id argue the opposite to be equally as true. People commit great wrongs should be repaid with similar suffering. Do unto others as you would have done onto oneself. Penalizing a murderer with the death penalty is as valid and essential a society building concept as the idea l that a society reward positive behavior

Capital punishment is there to put evil out of the land. And it says in the Bible that is the reason.
I think what they mean is that no sentence will be enough since their loved one is gone forever. it's not that they don't want the criminal to be punished they just know there's no closure when you lose someone you love
The trouble is when you're angry it's easy to say kill the other person, a life for a life.
When you're calm it's not quite the same. You don't want that persons death on your shoulders. You don't feel good putting someone to death, it's not an easy choice. You don't want to be the same type of person as the killer. You want to find forgiveness not so much for the murderer but for yourself. It's so hard to be angry and full of hatred. It feels awful. These killers are horrible people. They deserve to be locked up for their entire lives. Letting them lose is insane in my opinion. It's setting up everyone for failure.
There needs to be a complete overhaul of every justice system. They should be same, so there is no place you can hide from the authorities. It should be aimed towards rehabilitation if possible, otherwise the murderous, the cruel and the molesters should lose their life to an institution until they die.
The good people deserve to be safe. When we it be our time to be considered, to be safe ?
The law is not about vengeance, and luckily the courts and laws are not based on the bible. The death penalty is no deterrent to a would be murderer.
@@janetpendlebury6808 I can provide examples of real life murder cases where subsequent evidence showed the criminals discussed and took into account local sentencing guidelines before committing their crimes. So if criminals take into consideration whether a crime will net them 2 years in jail or 20 years, what on earth would make you believe this same premise wouldn’t apply to the death penalty?
A criminal will oftentimes think about, perhaps sometimes even reconsider a crime based on doing an extra ten years in prison so why wouldn’t a portion also reconsider if the death penalty was on the table?

I just love an Irish accent, my thoughts go out to the friends and family, I am glad justice was found at last for Dermot and his adoring loved ones, this really is devastating 😢, so luke was a pos,and received a short sentence! he should suffer each minute of his life, rip Davie. These sentences are absolutely shocking, take a life you get life, and I believe the death pentality should be world wide.

Someone needed to turn off Luke's life support, people would be safe from him in the future. I have noticed that Australia is really light on sentencing laws maybe the people might want to get some laws changed for tougher sentences.

My heart goes out to them. So many bad people slip through the "justice" system. Those family members left behind are the ones who serve a life sentence forever.
