Behind the Wall of Sleep is a lead in to N.I.B./Evil Woman is a cover song that they didn't really like but their manager talked them into doing it/Sleeping Village is a lead in to Warning.
The "satanic thing" was just an aesthetic choice. Across from where they were rehearsing was a theater showing a Boris Karloff horror movie called "Black Sabbath", and they got the idea of doing "horror music" just like movies did "horror films". which were always popular. They even took the band's name from the movie. That choice shows how huge this band's influence has been, since that "satanic/horror" theme has been redone by almost every metal band since. Even the hand gesture everyone uses today came from Black Sabbath. Incidentally, "Evil Woman" was a cover song that originally only appeared on the UK album version, while the US album contained "Wicked World". Wall of Sleep is about dying and awakening in the afterlife in heaven. Really, all of Sabbath's (Butler's) lyrics were very positive in terms of God. Geezer Butler and Iommi were both raised Catholic, and in fact, after he retired from Sabbath, Iommi even wrote a piece for his local cathedral, which you can find on YT under the title "How Good It Is", which is taken from one of the Psalms. ua-cam.com/video/5r-9-5T93N8/v-deo.htmlsi=-1Mnlj4y6f7wrM5r
The “satanic shit” is just an aesthetic thing. There are certainly bands out there that have an actual satanic agenda, but they’re a very very small minority. The imagery and even lyricism referencing anything satanic is meant to shock, think of it like a horror film. It puts the ugly and terrifying on display and says “hey look at this” to go against the grain. It’s that rebellious nature of rock/metal music.
I kind of lost touch with their music after the first four albums. I always suspected the were branded "evil" because war pigs spoke too much truth to power. They needed to be tainted to lessen their influence. They were asked if they were a satan group so they put out the song "After Forever" in response to show where they were at with that.
Greatest band to ever grace the planet. All 4 members pull their weight. Bill is ridiculous, geezers lyrics and grooves drove the track, Iommi is the riff god and Ozzy just gives them that doomy feel. Good shit man. Subbed!
They should name hurricanes after the first four Sabbath albums. People would get the fuck out of the way because obviously some serious shit is coming.
Side Note: As far as the satanic shit goes, back in the day if you even mentioned the devil people put their hands over their ears and Black Sabbath's first song on their first album talks about Satan coming round the bend. Then Ozzy did a live album called Speak of the Devil in '82 which is one the greatest albums ever made as far as I'm concerned. Freaked my mom out when I got that album when it came out. I think my parents thought I needed counseling, lol. Ozzy calls himself The Prince of Darkness, too, which doesn't help.
Ozzy thought that if people would pay money to see a Monster Movie that scared the sh*t out of them, then why not make a music album to do the same thing. The rest is history

jinx
Evil Woman was a cover, not written by them. It was not on the American release. Im guessing it was an attempt to get on radio in England.
Great info thank you!
