I love watching rap/hip-hop fans listening to Sabbath and enjoying Geezer's funky base, Iommi's heavy riffs, Ozzy's vocals and the awesome drumming and breakbeats of Bill Ward. Great reaction guys keep following Sabbath down the rabbit hole!
When Sabbath was still "Earth" they played gigs throughout Europe, some of these gigs would be day after day of several sets a day, they would use these gigs to rehearse and work out new material.
During the recording of this album the band kept getting pushback from the studio engineers who told them this isn't how a recording should sound with the heavy distortion. They recorded this album in 12 hours over 2 days... bands now spend months and don't get results like this. Legends 100%! Great Reaction!
It was ‘71…..i was 16. This guy said “come and check out this album”. He had a kick ass stereo. Played it through. “Blown away” doesn’t describe it. Changed my whole concept of music. Till this day, still my favorite album. Never gets old……
The sound of the bass coming out of Bassically into N.I.B. is astounding. That first riff in N.I.B. is just the bass. Hugely distorted, many overtones. Beautiful.
Great reaction gentleman. This debut album is in my opinion one of the best I have ever heard. They were the king of tempo changes in there songs. It’s like you’re listening to 3-4 different songs in one. My favorite musicians of all time. Bill, Geezer, Tony, and the Oz man love this fricken album. Keep on doing what you’re doing love you guys…❤
This album was the birth of heavy metal. Not an exaggeration - before this, there were songs here and there that were heavy, ominous, etc. - but this was the first example of a whole album that was just HEAVY. It birthed a genre.
I was 10 when my older brother brought this album home in 1970, the cover actually creeped me out and when he put the first song on real loud, it freaked me out even more. My mother rushed into the living room and immediately turned it off proclaiming that it was garbage. Soon after, she bought us a pair of headphones.
Trying to catch you guys early before you get to their second album, which I really hope you'll check out. The album (called Paranoid, released 7 months after this one), opens with War Pigs, which is a song you guys have already reacted to. Rather than skip it or hear the same version again, there is a legendary live performance that was recorded while the song was still being finalized. Musically the song is there note for note, but the lyrics are still being worked out. The energy of the band, Ozzy's enthusiastic performance, and the quality of the recording, all make the video a classic. But what really sets the whole thing off and makes it a must see is watching Bill Ward beat the hell out of his drums with an authority and confidence few are capable of. It's a great video and one of my favourite live performances of all time. War Pigs - Live in Paris - 1970. I think you'll dig it. Bill Ward is a beast.
WOW!!!! Based on your recommendation I just watched that live War Pigs performance. AMAZING!!!! Sounded just like the album. And to see Ozzy's energy...and the drummer! THANK YOU!
You should check the live version of N.I.B and War Pigs in Paris in 1970 It encapsulates how loud, heavy and powerful they were on stage in their early years
Sabbath recorded this entire album in one 12hr session. 12 hours! Just let that sink in. Records today have a dozen writing credits and take months to get a single track how they want it. Genius stuff from Sabbath
OZZY at 21 yrs old here ! 🔥❤️🎸🤘🏼 I can’t believe he’s “74” now ! Time flies and I’m getting old 😢 Ozzy said he did not know what to call this song so he went with Nib… after “ Bill Ward’s” beard ! (Drummer) 🤪 but he said to make it more intriguing he added punctuation’s and named it N.I.B. Which Sabbath fans renamed it “Nativity In Black” 🔥🎸🤘🏼❤️
Guy's, sorry I'm late to the party, I have a vague recollection of a video with Tony saying that this whole Album was recorded in either one or two days. Imagine anyone doing that these days. Great reaction as always, keep rocking.
They were together about a year, and 19 or 20 years old when they recorded this album in October 1969. Incredible creativity and innovation in such a short period of time, and at such a young age.
@@JoeandAngie 13 hours in the studio total, recorded live off the floor with Ozzy in a booth. They basically recorded a live set, and then did some double-tracked guitar parts and vocal overdubs. It's raw, and it's perfect. Very remarkable just from a recording/studio perspective.
Ad's a few thunders and bells, and the master piece are ready .... the only production mistake was the inverted cross inside the album... that's crucified them all journey
This album is a landmark in music history. This is considered by many music critics and music historians as the very first heavy metal album in history. This is “H. I. S. T. O. R. Y.“ !!!
I was 12 when this was released and was fortunate to have an older cousin down the street who always played great music, and he played this album all the time. Sabbath was the first band I saw live, on the Sabotage tour in 1975. The opener was Mountain, whose "Nantucket Sleighride" is a great tune.
Two things I notice about this album: its raw sound and funkiness. It definitely sounds like a band jamming in a garage and the sound quality is a secondary concern. That’s not a put down, it’s a compliment. One last observation is the bass. It’s louder than most rock/metal albums, but with Geezer Butler playing, it’s important to have him turned up.
These are really two separate songs - Behind the Wall of Sleep and NIB. Warner Brothers records in the US added the other titles and made it one long track.
a quote from metallica.....you cant always sing about things that are pretty, if not for sabbath there would be no metallica...., a great quote...beside them being great musicians, this was so different and unique, they by far my favorite band of all time, guys, keep doing what you do, its greatly appreciated!
Another great reaction! You guys nailed it again. It's great to see how on point historically and open minded you are towards music. Black Sabbath released their second album "Paranoid" in alsio 1970 which put them on the map forever. Hope you guys review that album too!
As usual great reactions guys. Black Sabbath recorded this in 12 hours and you can rarely find that sort of magic these days. They had honed their craft so you basically you have a live performance in the studio with a very very few overdubs. Continue with every Sabbath album as you did with Led Zeppelin. I'm sure you'll hear no complaints. 🤘
Ozzy is an all natural tortured soul, soul singer from a not so great childhood and rough tough streets of Birmingham uk. His voice carries so much sorrow and he was just a kid then. A sick kid in fact when they recorded their debut ozzy had a cold which is also why he sounds more nasally on this record but it does the heaviness justice
I was 15 when this album came out...and it was epic...my friends ask me to this day why I still love this band...cause its timeless...never stops being great...thank you guys...
I told you would like this album! One of the best ever. The double track guitar solos are also unique which is used quite a bit on their next album "Master of Reality". This album is as good if not better than the first. BS is one of the best ever rock bands. Also their lyrics do not get enough credit. Many are really good and vastly under rated.

Great reaction gents!! Ending off with what is probably my #1 Black Sabbath tune! NIB just has that bass groove & killer guitar riff that sold me on B.S. back when I first heard it when I was 13! And the lyrics, which is basically a Satan's love song to another is just awesome. Yes, this debut album was an absolute KILLER!! So bluesy, yet SOOOOO heavy! Guys…I really enjoy your reactions to Sabbath. I love heavy rock but I think Sabbaths magic is the funk. To be honest, if you listen to the albums Paranoid, Masters of Reality, Vol4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, you are in for a world of awesome, funky, heavy and at times beautiful tunes.
If you want to hear a different sound from Sabbath, listen to their song "Spiral Architect." You also need to listen to Sabbath with Ronnie James Dio as the front man. They put out some great music together. Their album "Heaven and Hell" is my favorite!
I understand that most people can't say what song is their favorite out of all bands... Me personally I have no problem revealing my favorite ever... BEHIND THE WALL OF SLEEP... That's right...
Prior to this album being released most of the songs being aired were "Bubble Gum" rock. Lyrics all had the same theme...Boy meets girl, falls in love and life is great. Then this came out. HAA! Turned the music world upside down. Sabbath's main theme was life is going to be a battle and it's going to sting EVERYBODY from the President to the janitor. I honestly thought Ozzy was black the first time I heard him on this album. Thanks guys.
Guys, I believe you have reached the pinnacle of rock and roll and heavy metal with the Sabbath and Zeppelin songs you have done. I think you should work towards some of Ozzy’s solo stuff with Randy Rhodes. Diary of a Madman will get you many likes
Thank you so much for doing this album. I'm 62, and this was my youth. Before this, they were 'The Polka Tulk Blues Band' and 'Earth'. Heavy blues music. This album begat heavy metal! i love ALL Sabbath, but it was all down hill with Ozzy's vocals after this one. No more gritty sound. He got more "nasaly" as the years went on. Just like John Fogerty.
Queens kid born & raised! Represent! also a Sabbath &music head, I love the reactions, and hearing your perspectives via your producers ears . It’s really hard to do, hearing these songs cold .. True story re: the Mets gear - my uncle was an usher at Shea in the late 70’s- mid 80’s- he was also a bookie and the ushers were neighborhood guys and some real heavy gamblers, that’s why you were able to bribe your way down at Shea unlike Burns Security at Yankee Stadium.. 😂 Queens in the 80’s- what a time! ✌️

My parents hated this album when I bought it. I was 14. It lived on my turntable for months
Remember N I B is a warning!! The Devil is lying to you-/You are the first to have this love of mine!! Yeah right.. pay attention people
Queens kid born & raised! Represent! also a Sabbath &music head, I love the reactions, and hearing your perspectives via your producers ears . ✌️
That’s awesome. Che is a huge Darryl Strawberry fan.
their first album sounded so goooood
It's as if they kept that drumbeat in for generations to sample.
