Bill Ward - cream of drummers. This is prime Black Sabbath, the passion of a live performance. And note that Bill's drum kit is tiny compared to today's drummers.
Got to sit on side of stage when they performed at Madison Square Garden during song" Ironman" ...Frank Zappa was in town and introduced the band and everyone went crazy..nice surprise for everyone 😁this was latter 70's
@@PML78 It took them a while to get the lyrics all worked out, you can click on 4 early live performances and essentially get 4 different versions of the track
@PML78 this version is when the song was called "Walpurgis", especially prominent in the second verse before the chorus. This performance had the original lyrics
War pigs and Children of the grave are especially poignant right now. It’s quite tragic that 50 years later we’re still hopelessly stuck in the same cycles of war and destruction.

Bill Ward (drummer) like Bonham of Zeppelin proves once again you can do so much with so little. One of the greatest drum performances ever - on a near minimalist kit. Neil Pert will (justifiably) always be considered likely the best of all time with his performance and skill and precision with a hundred different surfaces - but this brutal savage display that births newer guys like David Grohl shows how much sound you can make with a simple set-up.
Remember, there was no such thing as the genre of "Heavy Metal" at this time. -You could say, Black Sabbath was the first Heavy Metal Band. That term wasn't even used until the mid 70s, I think. While I wasn't a huge Fan of these guys, you have to admit, they were way ahead of their time. I was 14 years old in 1970, and I'm now 68. Man, time just flies by.
The term actually came from the 1968 Steppenwolf song Born to be Wild but I'm not sure how long it took to actually become a moniker for the genre at large. It could be argued that some late Beatles tracks and some Hendrix tracks qualified as heavy metal before the genre broke out proper with Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Iron Butterfly, and Steppenwolf. But all those other bands covered a more diverse range of rock music, while Black Sabbath has always played what we now classify as metal even before that term was commonplace. So I think it's proper to call Sabbath the first true heavy metal band, as long as we give the other founding fathers their credit as well.
You nailed it. Being 67 and growing up with all of this, I completely agree. I bought “Are you experienced” in ‘67 and was just blown away by Purple Haze. A writer around that time characterized the song as, metal raining down like rain. And of course as you mentioned, Heavy metal thunder, in Born to be wild. Along with the sounds of some other very heavy sounds of the late sixties. Great stuff.
There were definitely at least a handful of metal songs prior, but Sabbath is very likely the first metal band. Early metal has considerable overlap with rock. There's no real way to distinguish one from the other without omitting some vital piece of metal history on a technicality. Lemmy's classic opener was always, "We are Motorhead, and we play Rock N Roll." Way I see it, if the guys making the music don't care about the label, I don't think we should sweat it.
I can’t explain the impact this band had on my generation. At the time I was a senior in high school looking Vietnam in the face. Black Sabbath was exactly the band we needed. I get the sweats every time seeing this video. Thanks.
I use to listen to my dads records as a kid. The Doors, Deep Purple, Credence Clear Water Revival, and many more. I still remember when I heard Black Sabbath, especially this song for the first time, and I was hooked. Black Sabbath are the godfathers of heavy metal.
I’m 62 and heard this at 11 and it made quite the impact on me. But it was my 2 year older brother who had the album and played it over and over. It has always stayed with me.
I am a little younger probably heard it in the late 70s on my dad's reeel to reel. He had one full of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Wore that reel out when he wasnt home LOL
I love seeing "rookies" begin the listen to rock and roll and thus begin to realize how not only how effing good it was but also how it transformed music, including rap. This 'stuff' changed everything.
Ward can generate a masterpiece of destruction with a most simple drum kit. He doesn’t need drums covering every square inch of his area to make killer sounds. Amazing drummer.

Could you imagine being in the crowd for that live show? One of the few that I would’ve killed to be at if it wasn’t before my time… smaller venues are magical when you get to see raw talent up close & personal.
Yes The only thing that messes me up is the lyrics is different from the album but... I just rock on singing it as I know it SATAN LAUGHING SPREADS HIS WINGS🤘🏽😎
Ozzy sings the original lyrics to the song when it was called, " Walpurgis" after the first verse. The record company forced Geezer to write the nicer lyrics of, "War Pigs."

The accident occurred when he was 17 years old and working in a place that produced sheet metal. After the tips of some of the fingers of his right hand were cut off he was depressed, and thought that his dream of becoming a rock guitarist was dead. I believe it was one of his coworkers that encouraged him to overcome the tragedy, and introduced him to the music of guitarist Django Reinhardt. Reinhardt was an amazing performer who only had the use of two fingers and the thumb of his left hand. The fourth and fifth fingers had been badly burned. Tony Iommi was inspired after listening to Django Reinhardt, and the rest is history.

One of my favorite Ozzy Black Sabbath songs along with Snowblind! As far as Dio sung Black Sabbath, Sign of the Southern Cross along with Heaven & Hell.
Black Sabbath had genuinely brilliant vocals, lyrics and musicians that defined a genre and an era. Rare combination. Makes me even more mad that they cut off the performance Ozzy did for the Rams halftime show in the season opener last year knowing that he had to retire from performing weeks later.

He sings some different lyrics in the last verse here, than on the studio version!! I was 17 when this song came out, and about to marry a soldier 2 months later. For several reasons, I was SUPER late coming to appreciate Black Sabbath. I remember thinking at the time they got popular, that they were tryin' to be Zeppelin!! I came around more to Ozzy, and especially with "The Osbournes", over the years I have become a huge fan! This performance is absolutely EPIC! Amazing quality, both video and audio, considering the time! And that drummer was giving both Keith and Bonzo a run for their money! And The Ozz-Man was KILLING IT! The OG Headbanger!!!!🤘 Loved this reaction, Polo!
Oh, and I almost forgot to say - I'm with you, that this performance is MUCH better than the studio version - which I have a hard time listening to, because Ozzy sings way too sharp......and as an actual singer from toddlerhood, and was still singing until about 15 years ago. Anyway, in this live version, he is singing almost right on key....at least, compared to the og.
All of that sound by Bill Ward on drums. Came from a basic drum kit with one riding tom tom and one floor tom tom and a extra cymbal. And Geezer Butler was a excellent base and was the bands lyrics writer.
Also, when you think that Tony had lost part of two fingers shortly before the band blew up. He fashioned a prosthetic out of a melted washing up liquid bottle top, and had to de tune his guitar and use lighter strings, which is a major part of his sinister sound.
You weren't rambling. Sometimes the right words are just hard come by. You know the band is awe-inspiring when their live performances are equal to or better than the studio recordings.

All 4 are in the conversation for the best at what they do.
That’s why Tony Iomi is known as the riff master
This is a tick heavier/faster than the album version. Love it! Nothing like hearing a fresh take on your favorite sabbath song.
The meanest riff has to be the middle breakdown of “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”. Check that one out! You’ll dig it! 🤘🏼
They sounded so good live. The guitar player Tony had by that time already lost his fingertips and was using the Prosthetics that he made.
You need to see a live intermission instrumental by this drummer. Just insane!
