If you haven't yet, I highly recommend checking out the afternoon tea at the Wolseley next to the Ritz! Amazing feel, mid price range, insanely good vegetarian/ vegan selection and they offer free refills of everything (yes, we ate so many scones and had sandwich and mini battenberg refills...)
I find that afternoon tea has become a total luxury in the latest years. Fortnum and Mason have doubled the price in 10 years or so (£80 now!). I found years ago that The Orangery at Kensington Palace had a great value, but now it is £55. You can still find budget options, like Pastiserie Valerie for around £40 for two people. So 20 each, and it was yummy. Maybe not so posh or fancy, but very nice. Also the café at the crypt in Saint Martin in the Fields have lovely cream tea for around £7 and it was delicious.
My daughter and I splurged and had tea at the Rosewood Hotel, as per your recommendation and it was beautiful. Every item was artistically created and presented.
I really enjoy the way you present things (through American eyes but acclimated to the London ), it’s easy and takes the stress away. I’m American and I understand your jokes and mannerisms. I cannot wait to go to London ❤ Love all the different price points and experiences 💪🏼
Can you please tell me the location of this place in london. The price point you mentioned is closer to my budget. Also do they provide vegetarian and eggless options if you remember?
Thank you. I’m staying at the Rubens at the palace and this is right across the street. I noticed it a few months back and it’s funny seeing it mentioned in the comments.
We did afternoon tea at the Ting, there was a light rain and it made the view even better if that’s possible. I also ate a few things I would have never considered otherwise
With your advice, we enjoyed tea at Ting two weeks ago complete with the foggy Shard cake!!! We then took the tour to the top of the Shard which was a hit on a clear sunny day. Everything has a price but for us Virginians, it was worth the cost....
I've been waiting for this video to get some recommendations and like the look of the Mad Hatter afternoon tea. When I visit London I usually have coffee and cake at The Parlour at Fortnum and Mason its usually fairly quiet and relaxed in the afternoon. They do savouries, cakes, ice cream and an afternoon tea for £23, not bad for that part of London.
OK I've purchased The Casual Tourist Guide to West London as I'm going to Japan House on Kensington High Street, very impressed by the digital map its exactly what I'll need to do a bit of exploring.
Planning on taking my son for his 13th birthday to the Shard building at Ting for afternoon tea. You are welcome to join us 👍. Although still a long way to go (June 2024) 😂
A lot of people don't have afternoon tea and cakes etc. It's a misconception to assume that everyone in the UK follows this tradition. But absolutely worth producing a vlog like this one. Many thanks - keep them coming! 👍
Afternoon tea is now 45 per person. But the review was spot on. Super wonderful experience and great environment. The staff was SUPER friendly. The art collection was also very impressive.
I think it's excellent that you took in consideration different price points. I'm Colombian, in our culture we do "elevens" and afternoon tea/coffee. I've been to many high teas and I love them. But, for me, your latter option of just the scones and tea was lovely and just the right amount of food I want in an afternoon snack. This is a recommendation I've never seen before. Could you tell me, do bakeries in London also offer tea and a place to sit? Or is it more like most French or Italian bakeries/bars where you take your coffee standing?
Agree about cream tea, usually the full afternoon tea is too much food for the afternoon. Highly recommend the Ivy (they have restaurants in many locations) great surroundings, great service and great quality. You can even get cream tea at one of London’s top hotels, The Lanesborough and it’s a lot less expensive than the full option.
me too girl!! I just booked my flights in the morning and I have been dreaming for this. Already planned everything out. I hope you will enjoy your trip 🥰🥰
Dear Jess; I,m staying at Meliá White House and when I asked them a nice play for having afternoon tea, they suggested the very same hotel. Nonetheless I do not want to spend my leisure time in my hotel and, since I,m at London, I decided to attend another establishment. Yes, the one from one review of yours, so : Fortnum and Mason was my choice. I,ll keep ypo posted!
Our tea at Grosvenor House was fantastic but that Mad Hatter tea is adorable! There is a tea place in St Louis, MO called The London Tea Room ( owned by British expats) that has a great afternoon tea for the price. They have authentic clotted cream. We go every few years when visiting family.
Personally I always put the clotted cream first on the scone. Then when I put the jam on top, nobody can see how greedy I have been with the cream! That looks like the gardens of Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park at the beginning of the video?
Cream then jam. Nice. 😁 I am sure this is going to sound super touristy, but we did get the afternoon tea in the cafe in the Westminster Abbey during our tour there. It was a lovely break and I recall it being very tasty. It was about the lower end of the midpoint per person on your list. Granted, it was largely a convenience thing, but we still enjoyed it.
I've read that some places allow you to order more of something if you like it, without an extra charge. Is this only at the more expensive places? We plan to have afternoon tea at Claridge's on our trip to the UK, but Ting's looks AMAZING!
I went to Claridges about 7 years ago and yes they allow us to order more of the savory sandwiches. And just had tea last week at the dorchester and they allowed more sandwhiches. When you are paying $100 per person they allow it lol
For my money considering price, quality and ambiance I recommend the Palm Court at the Firtzroy in Bloomsbury. Love your videos! (But sorry, I am Cornwall all the way when it comes to scones and clotted cream. And … “white” and “chocolate” should never be used next to each other. 😅)
Nice video as always :) And comes just at the right time. When looking for an afternoon tea/dinner for my upcoming London trip, I noticed a lot of restaurants are asking credit card information in advance, is this normal? And do you have recommendations for restaurants that are easy to book? :D
Yes that's normal for popular and high-end places as if you don't show up or cancel last minute they will charge you. We have tons of easy to visit reccs in our guides if you're not finding enough on this channel: shop.loveandlondon.com
We did the RAH guided tour and afternoon tea - interesting tour and nice tea lovely service didn't break the bank but we don't have anything to compare to since it was our first (not last!)
I was schooled in Tasmania and I love scones. When I was back to Germany I would bake my own scones and in summer I would make my own raspberry jam 😊. Oh people don’t get scones. They just don’t. 😂
And to think I was in London last Saturday….and then again last Monday/Tuesday and I didn’t have afternoon tea once ??!! ….what was I doing !!! ps the answer was on Tuesday afternoon I was at a show at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane which I was very pleasantly surprised by the interior and ambience…. They do afternoon tea…. Very convenient for tired legs near Covent Garden.
At the famous Betty's Tearoom in York, they charge about £35 or so, and it's usually full of foreign tourists queuing up outside, thinking they are getting an authentic British experience. You can find much cheaper ones around the city for a third of the price and it's just as tasty
Can I recommend the ivy Chelsea gardens? It’s very affordable at £35.5 (2024 price) the ambiance is amazing, and the food and service are both really good
Hi, this video was amazing , exactly what I was looking for. Just one question for the creator or anyone who knows for sure. Is there a strict dress code for afternoon tea? I’m hoping to do a day trip with just hand luggage, so I would need to plan my outfit before I leave my country 😊🤍
I will visit London next Spring and would like to try an afternoon tea for the first time. Is there any etiquette to the afternoon tea. Are those sweet refillable? Can I take what leftover home? Is there a place for solo? Thank you!
Hey Jess, how are you? I came across your youtube video whilst trying to search for something on the net. Initially saw your Afternoon Tea videos which were great. Loved the review. Haven't got round to the Fortnum & Mason Afternoon tea as yet. Just as a recommendation have you been to the Indian Afternoon Tea at The Taj St James Court. Great food and service. The Taj has been voted World's strongest brands last year. They treat you like royalty, it's a whole different level of Afternoon Tea, lots of sweet and savoury treats, also perfect for vegetarians. It has Indian and western fusion going on.
Hello! The city is so big and there are so many to choose from so it's hard to only suggest a few as it also depends on what your budget is, where you'll be located at the time, etc. Our London itineraries and Casual Tourist Guides are where you'll find our top veggie recommendations but they're grouped by area or by a single route to follow so you can easily figure out how to work them into your plans without having to spend hours on public transport. All looks terrific. I hope when I go to the high-end tea I’ve booked for my May holiday, they’ll let me swap out things I don’t like, such as fish & seafood or coffee desserts🤢 🤞🏼
@@loveandlondonIt worked! (At the Cafe Royal, which must be one of the most expensive teas in London. But it was fab-u-luscious!!!! 😊The venue couldn’t be more over-the-top fancy, but it was an awesome experience, I highly recommend adding to the Bucket list!)
I thought the Ivy seemed really good value, and what I would go for. I noticed you didn’t actually compare the quality of the scones, I think that is important.
The Ivy does afternoon tea with the savouries and sweets too (not just scones) and all of their restaurants are lovely and individually decorated so no two are the same. its very affordable in comparison with the 5 star hotels which are now nudging at £70-100 + which I do think is a bit ridiculous for a sandwich and some cakes!

For the free refills, did you just ask them for it? I hear that there is free tea refills but not sure about the pastry and sandwiches etc
Also curious!
I’m a Brit and I’m getting quite old… afternoon tea is still on my to do list - don’t worry even we Brits can’t agree whether to say skon or skoan
😂😂
Skon
Skon
It depends where you come from in the UK as to how you pronounce it. Where I grew up everyone said Skoan, scon just sounds pretentious to me.
Skon
