Is Afternoon Tea at The Ritz London Worth The Hype?

  • The Ritz London is one of the most prestigious and luxurious hotels in the entire world. It is so famous, in fact, that the expression "ritzy" actually originates from The Ritz! There are few hotels more well known than The Ritz London, though staying at the hotel is not quite within this up-and-coming UA-camr's budget right now! But we did decide to try the famous Afternoon Tea at The Ritz in Palm Court.
The Ritz London Afternoon Tea in Ritz London's Palm Court is one of the most famous British afternoon tea experiences in all of London, if not the world. It is a posh experience and a jacket and tie is required. Mick Jagger was once even almost refused service for not being properly dressed! We have had afternoon tea at The Plaza Hotel in NYC before, but never the Ritz's, so we'll be seeing if one of the best afternoon teas in London is worth the hype!
Everyone knows the legacy of the Ritz and its "Ritzy" Afternoon Tea, but is it worth the hype or is it just living off its reputation at this point? As always, this is the question we seek to answer on UA Eats. Tune in and find out!

UA, split the scone in half lengthwise, then add a nice thick layer of clotted cream and jam one on top of the other. This is the way it’s meant to be experienced.

Seriously. Dude doesn't really know nearly enough about food to be a food blogger. It's cringe but its also wholesome at the same time and kind of hilarious. For some odd reason I'm here for it. It's like the lay mans interpretation of fine dining.

@@BeeFan9481 I'm from the US and even I know that's not how you eat a scone. I won't debate which goes on first, though I've always put on the clotted cream first because it's the harder of the two to spread so going on the scone directly makes that easier. I'm not sure why they serve it chilled here though.

Some excellent advice provided here by those who like myself have eaten many an Afternoon Tea. One further piece of advice. You put some clotted cream and jam onto your own dish and then you put them on the scone. Remember you sometimes are sharing the jam and clotted cream. I highly recommend anyone experiencing Afternoon Tea for the first time, needs to watch a video offered on UA-cam on the proper way to enjoy such a culinary experience.

Have had High Tea at the Ritz before, several times. The ambience is incredible. Can be a little overwhelming. The food, basically the same as in many other places. My favorite spot in New York is the Gotham lounge. They don’t let it get crowded, which suits me well. Small space, couches, comfortable, unhurried. Good food, very laid-back No need to get dressed up. Always told my daughters to meet me there at a certain time without fail. I would get there 15 minutes early to have an espresso and Sambuca at the bar. Then I would pretend I just got there to enjoy some nice tea, finger sandwiches and scones. So I’m not really a connoisseur.

Glad you got to experience the Ritz👍 (although you did make a big mistake with eating a scone dry…!🤣) Personally I prefer the afternoon tea they serve in Claridges in London. Wow! UA you were in Ritz London having English high tea! Good on you! You must have booked it very early. We went to London in Feb and I wanted to try the high tea in Ritz London but it was all booked out for the period we stayed in London. So we booked the high tea at the Claridge hotel at the heart of Mayfair and loved it. The dress code was not as strict as the Ritz but the food was exceptional (compared to what you showed in this video), you should try next time when you’re in London.😊

I had tea there recently just ate it rather differently.Had similar finger sandwiches. Then two plain scones pulled in half with jam and clotted cream. To finish I had chocolate cake .Had some sort of fruit tea to drink.Lots of food left so they packed it up nicely for me to take home .Think I paid 70.

That afternoon tea was really good value, dont forget its the Ritz, there was an abundance of food, even more that you could finish. It might not be mind blowing, but lets face it , you can't expect a Michelin star experience for £75? Definitely value for money. Plus those scones didn't actually look like scones? more bread like than a scone!

The Ritz London has a much better presentation with the plating than the NY tea you had. I noticed the Ritz waiter is relaxed but helpful obviously used to people who haven’t had tea every day. Cute how they called the egg salad egg mayonnaise with watercress. Because that’s exactly what you do for egg salad, as opposed to all the weird things people think you should do to egg salad. ❤ I am American and was taught to break my bread before I butter it so I’m not sure but I believe with scones you don’t break it into small pieces butter or whatever it- you just prep it in half and eat it? Does anyone understand this?

  • @engkev

From all the comments about proper way to eat scones. I truthfully didn't know that was a thing either. Being a middle class North American with not much exposure to this type of experience myself. Interesting to learn.
It's kind of like learning that culture. Maybe not the harsher comments. I'm sure UA had no offense intended.
I take it as a comparison example. It's maybe like seeing a person pour soysauce in white rice. To chinese ppl it's really not done. And worth mentioning.
Thanks for the lessons! Noted. Split scones and add cream and jam.

    • @irenechua910

Actually in regards to the soy sauce and rice... we do do it 😆 Also, in Japan there's this dish that you mix rice, raw egg, and soy sauce. There's also the general addition of soy sauce to rice porridge too, especially when you're feeling ill (marmite or bovril in SEA).

When the waiter brings around the dessert cart and asks you if you have any allergies, he means if you have any nut or dairy type of allergies... not shellfish allergies... did you see any seafood type items on the dessert cart? C'mon UA... you're better than that.
