They have a very unhealthy love hate relationship to start off and then it shows that they Zim has feelings and it appears Dib does too but then it switches and Dib seems agitated and disgusted with himself, most likely because Zim is an alien. Even during their... Risqué scenes they still are shown to have a level of hate towards each other. Zim wants Dib to belong to him in a way, and Dib is like "Yeahh no screw you" then it moves to them both having a sort of crisis about the whole situation. Then when something is talking to Dib in his head, I'm guessing it's either Zim or just another voice in Dibs head. Another risqué scene happens and Zim is hurt that Dib decides to leave him there. He then tries to take a sort of revenge on Dib by "marking" him with an Irken symbol this definitely doesn't help the internal battle Dib is having with himself. Then we see Dib finally snapping about everything and taking what his main goal was all along, to study Zim, even if it is in a more grotesque way, but at the very end it shows Zim, possibly saying he's still alive and trying to get revenge on Dib.
