WARNING: THIS COMMENT BE LONG I'm so glad to find more people who honestly don't buy Professor Membrane's redemption arc in Enter the Florpus. I'm not totally against the idea of trying to redeem him, I don't think it's impossible, but that needs to be handled carefully. If you want to redeem him, you need to show him actually making an effort to understand and care more about his kids. Enter the Florpus did not do that. It'd be one thing if the film just pretended Membrane only didn't appreciate Dib's interests rather than repeatedly calling him insane to his face which - depending on how the viewer interprets Dib's mental state - is either gaslighting or ableism. No, instead Florpus also decided to include the Issue 1 plot. You know, the plot that requires the professor to ignore his son as he has a several week long (at minimum!) paranoid breakdown so bad it's implied Dib never even left his room to go use the toilet. The one where the man who normally lets Dib get restrained and/or locked up at the slightest provocation doesn't call mental health services when he was legitimately a danger to himself and in severe need of help. The one where Professor Membrane not only didn't give a fuck about his son, but ignored his poor daughter who he forced to deliver food to her brother and live next to his awful smell. That plot. You can't just include that and then expect me to buy he's a good dad. Hell, the film decided to make that aspect WORSE by having the professor go all like "At least your brother isn't going on about paranormal stuff" making it look like he never even bothered to check on Dib that entire time. At best, the Issue 1 plot makes it look like Membrane only cares about his son's mental health when it can negatively affect his reputation. At worst, it makes it look like he wouldn't care if Dib died, if not be much happier for it. That's not even getting into how the ending of Enter the Florpus also shits on its attempt at an emotional scene by showing Membrane learned absolutely nothing and still doesn't believe Dib. Even though the town is clearly in ruin and Clembrane is still there, he still won't listen to his kid, no matter how illogical it is to continue to do so. Doubly insulting because he writes it off as a hallucination despite bullying his son for his (at the very least perceived) psychosis for years. Even the quote they used during the climax is a slap in the face - "I'm always proud of you son". Bullshit. If Professor Membrane was truly proud of Dib, why does he constantly reject, ignore, and belittle him? That's not how you act towards someone you're proud of... like at all. Hell, he never even calls Dib by his own name, as if he's too ashamed to acknowledge him properly. But yes, 10/10 great dad, how could anyone have any issues? I think I'm so bothered by the Membrane's role in Enter the Florpus because I know the staff can do better. The original show handled the topic of abuse surprisingly well. While Zim and Dib's rivalry was over the top and ridiculous, most other bullying and harassment in the show was portrayed oddly realistically, sometimes even subtly. And while most of the abusers went unpunished, it was still clearly shown as wrong, especially in episodes where the psychological damage it causes is made clear. In regards to Professor Membrane specifically, it's pretty easy to tell Dib and Gaz are neglected and/or abused at home. Both of their personalities are unusually cynical, distrusting, hostile, and depressive for a 12 and 11 year old, respectively. They're both very mature and independent for their age as well. In real life, that combination of traits is a common sign of a child living in a harmful household. A lot of Membrane's worst abuse and neglect isn't directly discussed either, instead only being hinted at. There's the obvious one with "Bloaty's Pizza Hog" stating he only has one full day off a year, which leads to a whole host of sad images of these poor kids left alone all day, even on holidays or their birthday. However, there's also much more subtle ones. Several episodes ("Battle Dib" and "Future Dib" are the two off the top of my head) imply the professor actively lies to his coworkers about having kids, presumably so he could work more without suspicion over their well-being. The latter episode in particular had someone from his work pick up Dib and Gaz by asking for Professor Membrane's "roommates". Not his kids, his "roommates". They don't even question it either, they're just like "Welp, that must be us" and go with it. There's another episode (unfortunately I forget which one) which had the professor talk to his children via floating monitor only for it to turn out to be a pre-recorded message that's several years old. Dib and Gaz notice this when they're told to feed the dog, who they haven't had or seen in a long time. So he can't even be bothered to make new messages apparently. Then there's all the times Professor Membrane sees Dib getting bullied, whether it be by his sister or (in one case) a bunch of world leaders he's letting tour his house, and does absolutely nothing about it, sometimes even low-key condoning it. The original show knew it didn't have to try to redeem him. That wasn't the point. It would feel incredibly out of place in a series so thoroughly dedicated to showing how abuse often doesn't get stopped or even acknowledged, even when it should. That might be what we want and wish to happen, but that's not always how reality works. Halfheartedly "redeeming" him was an insult to that message. I feel this animatic does an excellent job acknowledging a lot of those issues. I appreciate the nods to the prior mentioned "Bloaty's Pizza Hog" and the Issue 1 plot, as they're both great callbacks to some of the professor's lowest moments. You can just see the anger, sorrow, and pain in Dib and Gaz's expressions - they don't want to do this, but they have to do this because they don't want to suffer anymore. Some of the shot set-up is done really well too - I love how Dib and Gaz's positions in relation to Membrane reflect the situation. They start off distant from him, get closer to confront him, then literally switch sides against him before they walk away. The section the siblings were given perfectly fits each of their characters. Gaz's parts focus more on how she wanted to like her dad but was sick of him never being there and seeing the negative effects he's had on her brother while Dib's parts focus more on the constant pressure to try to get his dad to notice him, only to be repeatedly rejected for having different interests. There's also how Gaz is the one who's more confident and willing to start the call-out, staying mostly level-headed, while when Dib comes in he's a LOT more angry and bitter... but also much more depressed. It's very accurate to both their characters. Oh, and the way the lineart gets lighter to indicate flashback sections is a cool indicator as well. TL:DR; This animatic is incredible, the Enter the Florpus redeem-the-dad arc was handled terribly, and Professor Membrane can go fuck himself
The fact that he also canonically relates to Zim about feeling neglected too... Zim was training to be a soldier all of his life, only to be labeled as a defect and sent to rot on a foreign planet. Dib was a clone of Membrane and wanted nothing more than his support, but he was also labeled as defective just because he strayed from Membrane’s path and was interested in the paranormal. Anyone familiar with a certain very popular anime will know exactly why you don’t create children just to follow your path and surpass you. They’re living beings and their emotional needs have to be met.
ok, but that very last panel is just??? like, i get that its supposed to be funny, but i can only imagine them explaining what happened and dib breaks down and zim is just like ‘uh. what. uh. are you ok.’ and he awkwardly pats dib on the head or shoulder or something, saying ‘pat, pat’ like you always see
@@kawaiiemolga Honestly I thought you were being sarcastic tbh, (I don't ship them either), so I made a tsundere joke, you can google that but think the 11 yr old mindset of "if someone punches you, they're trying to get your attention" as an anime trope
The "if i turned my insides out would you even know that i was there" hits SO HARD because there's literally an iz ep where that happens to dib and membrane's just like: "eh gaz fix him or no bloaty's" without even like, a second glance
@@kawaiiemolga To be fair, it's been proved that Dib is just a clone of Prof. Membrane so he can continue his research after he dies and he considers Dib a failure because of his fascination with the paranormal. However, I don't believe we've gotten any proof that Gaz is a clone. She might be an experiment, or perhaps is an actual child made through a female donation. (Because I doubt Membrane has the tolerance to get a woman impregnated and tolerate it for the next eight months.) It has been shown thought, that Gaz has more favor from their father then Dib does.
HOLLY SHIT. This is so gorgeous bro. The facial expressions are just so HHHHHH??? So many amazing moments in simple character movements and their faces. Just wow. I legit felt like I was going to tear up while watching this. You rly do be out there,,,, being talented O_O
I think thats incredible that the World is about to end, and Dib and Gaz just start singing about how they hate their dad , and the songs of tgwdlm fits very well ;-; I just think that was funny :D Yay
If you like tgwdlm I think the invader Zim series is right up you ally. I'll admit the movie is so good but all the characters feel a little nicer??? which might make it harder to understand why the kids (especially Dib) are angry at their dad.
I cam imagen this happening if the show was brought back; Dib and Gazz confronting their father for his terrible fathering skills and out casting his son and not seeing the alien threat, leaving him pretty much nothing to bring Dr. Membrane to feel joy and happiness while Zim's confused out of him mind.
This is absolutely gorgeous and heart wrenching. What a wonderful representation of their awful awful family problems Also the bit where it says “if I turned my insides out, would you even know that I was there” reminded me of that one episode where Gaz saves Dib from being experimented on by Zim specifically because she’s afraid Membrane will cancel their family dinner if Dib’s body is inside out
"What's got you in a hurry?" "Outta my way, Gaz! I'm gonna perform a dramatic musical number, to call Dad out on his crap!" "What's the point? He never listens to anything you say anyway... or to me..." "That's exactly WHY I'm doing this, Gazleen." "...Can I tag in?"
The fact that Zim is more observant of Dib's emotional state than Membrane a lot of the time is incredibly sad. Sure, usually he's outright antagonistic, but he's not a complete monster devoid of anything but malice. Just, like, 95% that.
@@twist_ending7545 yeah I agree. Dib saying "you'll be proud of me!" And Membrane saying he already is. No he isn't. Dib's passion is the supernatural and Membrane keeps telling him it's not real and he wants him to study "real science".
GOD DANG I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS TO BE THAT EMOTIONAL I THOUGHT THIS WAS GONNA BE A FUNNY LITTLE CROSSOVER! it took me like 5 seconds to see who it was made by and I was JUST LIKE AHSGRHHSDHHEHE. also I love how you gave Gaz some issues too. Like I *never* see that! ALSO ONCE AGAIN ALL THE FRAMES AND THE CHOREOGRAPHY AND HE ANIMATION WAS JUST SOOOO- *I AM OUT OF WORDS*
@CapyClara Honestly I think that Gaz has a better relationship with Membrane than Dib because, sure, Membrane pays no attention to either of them, but he doubts Dib, and he really doesn't do anything to Gaz... I don't know it's just my opinion.
Gaz and Dib may not always get along (especially not in the original show), but, at the end of the day, it's clear that they do care about each other in their own weird way. Even if he annoys the crap out of her, I can totally see Gaz sticking up to Membrane for both Dib and herself in a scenario like this, where the neglect shown during the original show (and emotional neglect in the movie, for the most part) catches up to them.
upon later rewatches i always found it interesting that you gave Gaz the line 'its not my fault anymore' granted the usual presumption would be that Dib, as the 'screw up' child would be more likely to blame himself. But it makes a lot more sense than expected when you actually delve into Gaz's place in all of the Membrane Family Bullshit. In canon Dib has, despite being constantly downtrodden by the world, always stuck to his guns, he's been well aware this whole time that the failure wasn't actually his own to bear (usually the only person he specifically screws over other than himself is Gaz) but by the people in powerful positions in his life ignoring and dismissing him and writing him off despite the fact that he's right, even if often wrong about the actual level of threat Zim poses most of the time. Dib's always known its not his fault. Gaz however would often end up in a... i suppose you could say 'early years Adora' situation, where she was effectively put in charge of the 'problem child' in the family, she has to take Dib's meals to him, she has to tell him he's grounded, she's the only other person that knows that Dib is right about Zim but just has the good sense to know that Zim's not an actual threat and he self sabotages most of the time anyway. But that also means that if something happens to Dib Membrane will likely blame her for 'not handling him well'. And out of everyone Gaz will often be stuck suffering the consequences of Dib's ill-thought out actions, some of which were considerably more unthinking and self centered than just 'zims an alien i gotta stop him damn the consequences'. they ended up in the back of the line for the game console Gaz wanted because Dib just HAD to watch that new episode of Mysterious Mysteries and if she didn't get her revenge quest to take the game back from that bitchy kid she would have LOST her chance at getting the new Vampire piggies game for MONTHS when a rerun of that episode Dib was watching likely would have played next week. She had to break Dib out of Alien experimentation just so their family could all have one (1) dinner together for the first time in years because Dib couldn't sit tight for one day. Dib cursed her with the hotdog curse literally just because he 'wanted to try out the spell' People always say that Gaz bullies Dib but if there's anyone that has REASON to be consistently upset with him it's Gaz, and she never really goes out of her way to do it, she'll smack him around when he reveals HOW much he's screwed her over (but if my brother cursed me to have Pig Mouth for no good fucking reason than 'i wanted to try out this spell and i didn't want to use it on myself' i'd beat the shit out of him too) And make her displeasure known, but if there's anyone in this household that WOULD have valid reasons to be tired of Dib's constant reckless abandon toward his own safety and the safety of others, it's Gaz, but despite it she still goes to save his ass every time he needs her. So in the end it's likely that Gaz would be afraid that when things inevitably fall apart that its because she didn't try hard enough to reign Dib in. She didn't do enough, she didn't make him too scared of her wrath to set up a trap for Bigfoot in the garage, she didn't break his leg so he wouldn't go out hunting mothman. If things fall apart its because she didn't try hard enough But Gaz is just a kid too, she's even younger than Dib by about a year, and it's just as unfair to Gaz for their father to expect her to 'handle' Dib as it is unfair for Membrane to be Like That to Dib. they're both just children. none of this is their fault. I like how in the end after Dib storms off Gaz hesitates. She pauses, and looks back at their father one last time, as if weighing out her options. Because Dib's fucked her over so many times... but he was THERE. He was probably the one helping her with her homework even though he had his own waiting for him and teaching her how to flip a pancake because Dad forgot to leave them money for pizza tonight. And he can make her FURIOUS sometimes. truly FURIOUS. when he doesn't think things through and she's the one that suffers, but he'll take on suffering willingly to make it right too, even if it's at HER hand in her all-encompassing preteen rage. And she calmly walks after Dib. Because Dib doesn't blame her when he gets into trouble. Dib doesn't act like she's responsible for him. he can be INFURIATING. But he was there, and no one else was, so why bother chasing the love of someone that doesn't actually care about them? It's not because of her that Dib's reckless and thoughtless, it's not her responsibility to parent her older brother. It's not her fault anymore.
This is possibly THE best analysis I’ve seen of gaz and her relationship to Dib … ever??? You’re so right and I just want to thank you for writing this it’s so good
That part were Gaz says "your only daughter's under the weather" 0:36 OOF! i can feel the spite and anger in that animation even if it was just a few seconds. This is very well done, so many emotions and brings up memories for those episodes were they would just be sitting at the table ether waiting on him or looking at a recording of his face... makes you feel sad for those two kids.
I love this! I am always there for some good membrane sibling vibes. Membrane wouldn't listen to dib but he definitely would gaz, especially if she sided with dib. It makes this even better/heartbreaking because dib is softcore confirmed to be a one to one clone of membrane.
Wow this is really amazing ! I haven’t seen this musical but I really love IZ and the content regarding Membrane, Dib and Gaz. There’s so much potential to be explored ! I know IZ is the “funny haha cartoon” but Membrane is a really neglectful dad and I see myself in Dib a lot. That saying this animatic is really powerful and I cried up watching it.
I always get obsessed with your animatics and watch them over and over and over again and they inspire me so much I love your work and I wanna learn to animate so badly
If you pair this with the fan theory that Doctor Membrane is actually a irken who ran off and tried to hide away the fact aliens existed from his children it has 2 times the amount of PAIN and ANGST :,) Anyways absolutely amazing Animatic!! I love Tgwdlm and you did this song absolute justice!!
*"Diiiiiiib....I'm sorry. You looooost."* But man am I glad to discover both Tgwdlm and this animatic at approximately the same time. Like I've been rewatching this animatic on repeat for so long, but man does it still give me chills with how good it is!! Like best crossover animatic I've ever seen, for real I do love it!! They mesh together surprisingly well and this animatic is proof of that. [Mariah's vocals thooooo!!! X>] Moments like this are where Membrane deserves a good *kick to the head.* For it would be justified tbh.. :)
I love this so much, this matches the story so well. The composition, the movement, the storytelling in the flashbacks, it's all perfect. Thank you, holy shit.
I still remember the "clone" or "fake dad" in the Netflix movie called "Enter The Florpus" was more fatherly, caring and loving more than Membrane or pretty much known as "Proffesor Membrane" which so sad
I'm not crying, your crying. In all seriousness, this animatic was amazing. It wasn't just the story that brought tears to my eyes, the emotion captured in this animatic was absolutely incredible! I loved everything from your shot choices, to your keyframes, to the motion, and the arc the song pulled the viewer through. Overall this was an incredible animatic that borders on being animation.
This is stunning!!! I adore every movement and the expressions hit hard!!! Also I love the fact that both times Membrane reaches out he does nothing. He doesn't know how to comfort his children and it really shows.
This animatic it's just amazing, Professor Membrane really needed to hear some truths. Now, all I need is an animatic where Zim confront the Tallests, cause they are even worse than Membrane.
I wish that could happen. But that would require Zim to realize, REALLY realize the fact he's been exiled, left to rot. With as he is now, his denial is so strong he could stay on Earth for thousands of years in ignorant bliss. He needs the biggest wake up call in the universe for him to start thinking negatively about his Tallests and the lies they fed him.
GAH your animatics are so well made. The characters are appealing to look at, they are really expressive, the friggin perspective shots are so well made and well thought out and the lineart is so clean, I'm in complete awe
I think I broke the replay button, I'm just so obsessed with this gorgeous animatic. Most animatics I skip to my favourite part, but here I can't pick a favourite because they all are. Every expression (especially the heartbreaking ones), every movement, every smooth animation part, every transition, it's just beautiful. How do you not have more subscribers?!? Your art style is amazing, your animations are so smooth and detailed in little motions that just sell the movement. Just pure beauty.
I reviewed the past iz animatic almost every day ... oh my god. I haven't watched yet, but I am sure that this is masterpiece. I'm sure that it will be my new favourite animatic
I remember watching the episode where Dib had to go through all those tests just to get onto his dads show and freaking TALK to him. Sure it’s funny I guess, but that’s so fucked up. None of the security guards recognized him as Membrane’s son and he had to break into his dads dressing room in the end, before being immediately thrown out. Say whatever you want, but Membrane was not there for his kids.
I really dislike Membrane as a father. He is neglectful and unsupportive, he is barely at home, and when he is he still terrible towards Dib, treating his childhood hobby and interests as something stupid and inferior, as well as never standing up for him, even if he's ridiculed right in front of him. And the worst part is that he really loves his kids very much, he's just bad at fathering. I know this is the whole point of his character, but golly. Membrane. It really is not that hard to at least pretend you give a shit sometimes.
I'mma just, steal your animation and art skills for a minute XD but like seriously, this is amazing! Me and my friends our making our own Invader Zim comics with our female Invader characters and I'm mostly in charge of the art work but like, I could NEVER draw nor sketch like you, it's so hard! Adding musicals to this just makes it a masterpiece. Now if you'll excuse me, I'mma go cry in the corner because so many times I think shot Membrane's kids just standing up to him and this- oh my heart, I'm so glad the movie made him a bit better, like the character development is lovely
HIS "CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT" WAS TERRIBLE!!! "I'VE ALWAYS BEEN PROUD OF YOU"? NO! NO YOU HAVEN'T!!! HE DIDN'T DESERVE TO BE REDEEMED AND HE WASN'T EVEN SUCCESSFULLY REDEEMED!!! HE STILL DOESN'T BELIEVE DIB AT THE END AT THE MOVIE!!!
THIS. THISSSS. I have Always seen not your seed as a Gaz song and you did this wonders. AMAZING. the emotion you captured here... I cried lol. Thank you for making this, it's phenomenal!!!
Que bueno que Gaz cambio en la película para apoyar a su hermano Dib , me alegro que ahora tengan una buena relación de hermanos , siento que el profesor membrana necesita cambiar su forma de ser

I’ll drink to that

The fact that he also canonically relates to Zim about feeling neglected too...
Zim was training to be a soldier all of his life, only to be labeled as a defect and sent to rot on a foreign planet. Dib was a clone of Membrane and wanted nothing more than his support, but he was also labeled as defective just because he strayed from Membrane’s path and was interested in the paranormal.
Anyone familiar with a certain very popular anime will know exactly why you don’t create children just to follow your path and surpass you. They’re living beings and their emotional needs have to be met.
@@julietf3360 Lol yeah
ok, but that very last panel is just??? like, i get that its supposed to be funny, but i can only imagine them explaining what happened and dib breaks down and zim is just like ‘uh. what. uh. are you ok.’ and he awkwardly pats dib on the head or shoulder or something, saying ‘pat, pat’ like you always see

The "if i turned my insides out would you even know that i was there" hits SO HARD because there's literally an iz ep where that happens to dib and membrane's just like: "eh gaz fix him or no bloaty's" without even like, a second glance

Is that true or is a theory of the fans?
@@kawaiiemolga To be fair, it's been proved that Dib is just a clone of Prof. Membrane so he can continue his research after he dies and he considers Dib a failure because of his fascination with the paranormal. However, I don't believe we've gotten any proof that Gaz is a clone. She might be an experiment, or perhaps is an actual child made through a female donation. (Because I doubt Membrane has the tolerance to get a woman impregnated and tolerate it for the next eight months.) It has been shown thought, that Gaz has more favor from their father then Dib does.

Invader zim is the best! I recommend watching the series before the movie 😁
Invader Zim is a truly bizarre show, but if it's your type of humor it's absolutely fantastic. I'd definitely give it a shot and see if it's for you.
If you like tgwdlm I think the invader Zim series is right up you ally. I'll admit the movie is so good but all the characters feel a little nicer??? which might make it harder to understand why the kids (especially Dib) are angry at their dad.
Bro, please watch Invader Zim. The series, the comics if you can, the movie. Do it, it's so worth it
I cam imagen this happening if the show was brought back; Dib and Gazz confronting their father for his terrible fathering skills and out casting his son and not seeing the alien threat, leaving him pretty much nothing to bring Dr. Membrane to feel joy and happiness while Zim's confused out of him mind.
This is absolutely gorgeous and heart wrenching. What a wonderful representation of their awful awful family problems
Also the bit where it says “if I turned my insides out, would you even know that I was there” reminded me of that one episode where Gaz saves Dib from being experimented on by Zim specifically because she’s afraid Membrane will cancel their family dinner if Dib’s body is inside out

The fact that Zim is more observant of Dib's emotional state than Membrane a lot of the time is incredibly sad. Sure, usually he's outright antagonistic, but he's not a complete monster devoid of anything but malice. Just, like, 95% that.
I feel like this needed to be more of the focus in the movie
Membrane's "redemption arc" in the movie was awful
@@twist_ending7545 yeah I agree. Dib saying "you'll be proud of me!" And Membrane saying he already is. No he isn't. Dib's passion is the supernatural and Membrane keeps telling him it's not real and he wants him to study "real science".

ALSO ONCE AGAIN ALL THE FRAMES AND THE CHOREOGRAPHY AND HE ANIMATION WAS JUST SOOOO-
*I AM OUT OF WORDS*
If things fall apart its because she didn't try hard enough
But Gaz is just a kid too, she's even younger than Dib by about a year, and it's just as unfair to Gaz for their father to expect her to 'handle' Dib as it is unfair for Membrane to be Like That to Dib. they're both just children. none of this is their fault.

“It’s not my fault anymore” ALWAYS gives me chills. Every time.

Now, all I need is an animatic where Zim confront the Tallests, cause they are even worse than Membrane.
I wish that could happen. But that would require Zim to realize, REALLY realize the fact he's been exiled, left to rot.
