I honestly hate when a movie or show is marketed to have 'empowering women lead/characters!!' 'First person of color huge lead role!!' 'LGBT character is in the spotlight!!' Cause a lot of times they hype it up to the point where it doesn't deliver according to the audience. This show was way to dependent on the empowering women and LGBT stuff. In the end we got female characters who weren't even that great/likeable and a lesbian couple with no decent screen time or taken seriously as characters? Come on.

I agree. I have absolutely no problem with charactera of any race, gender or sexual orientation. But for goodnesa sake make them good.
Even as a kid I'd often dislike female character if she was a just a token girl. I would wish for characters like that to actually do something or to get some personality but NOPE.

Those labels on a movie just makes me not want to watch it. If they have nothing to do with the story then why does it matter? The gender, race or sexual orientation are the most boring part of a character, it's what they are, not who they are.

DororoXPenana I feel like it’s a spectacle, rather than an actual relationship to them. I’ve noticed not many treat is a just a normal relationship. It’s doesn’t need to be loud and flashy, but it does need to be meaningful and heartfelt, like all relationships that mean something to the story. I feel like they’re too scared to go all in.

Netossa and Spinerrela legit only exist to stare into the audience and announce "I'm GAY". And where did all the guards we see in the entire show go. Why are these kids the only ones fighting. Makes no sense. They try so hard to invoke emotion and drama into the finale, but it just doesn't work, it's so badly written and is no different from any hugging scene from any other episode.
    >Be sad
    >Blame self
    >Gets validated
    >Best Friend Squad hug
    >Rinse and repeat
And to top it all off, they beat them with a rainbow. Absolutely pathetic. I know an army of kindergartners that are more treating than the horde.
Also one thing that irks me. Adora has always been capable of beating Catra her entire life, but somehow loses to Catra with the power and speed of She-Ra, with gold armor to defend her self. Even by removing the sword there is no reason Catra should have lasted 10 seconds in that fight.

yeah that problem with the soldiers is so stupid, the kingdom that's leading the rebellion doesn't have an army\soldiers to defend it and just have some kids for defense ( how tf were they fighting before she-ra appeared, it was just bow and glimmer ? )
and why were the elemental princesses in their full power ? i thought they were supposed to be disconnected from their stones or at least having any kind of trouble with the connection as entrapta said and when they showed up the moon stone was weakened so their powers were supposed to be unstable or weak or anything, but they have their full power ? why ?

Knowing nothing about the original, I didn't think this show was terrible, but I don't think it's great either. It's just sorta...there for me. It has good concepts & ideas but with poor execution. Most fans of the show I've talked to only seem to care about shipping and praise it for "being gay" which I don't get cause the only canon gay characters had laughably small amounts of screen time.

I never liked the original, back in the 80's. She Ra was a mary sue from the word go, but I didn't (because I was about 10) know what that was at the time.
Everything about her is better than He-Man. She took him down without any powers, Hordak is Skeletor's Boss, who is more powerful, thus is more of a threat, She-Ra is rarely the cause of her own problems... I found her boring.
But even THAT was more interesting, well thought out, paced and explained that this mess of a 'show'. Which I use loosely.

If you take away all the controversy and the insults towards the fans of the old show, this show is one of the best examples of, "So close and yet so far," in existence. You can tell that there are so many good ideas in here, such as the mystery of the First Ones, the younger generation picking up the slack of the older one, and the spark of good character development in every character. But at every turn it is wasted on stupid jokes to show how these child soldiers are colossal dorks and making people want to imagine teenage lesbians. I never once believed that these were children who grew up in a warzone fearing for their lives every day, which was furthered by how modern the characters acted and talked. The original show had a few things that tied it to the 80's in terms of writing, but most of the dialogue and mannerisms are pretty timeless. Here, I swear the writers and animators were intentionally making every scene solely for the purpose of making gifs online. Especially with the net princess.

When I was a kid I used to like She-Ra more than He-Man because while the the stories were similar, she-ra had better character designs (no thanks to Mattel, though), better villains (the Shadow Weaver is an all-time favourite of mine), and She-Ra herself was a more versatile hero than He-Man (HM was mostly bunching, lifting and using his muscles, SR used brain and brawn, as she punched, kicked and threw horde vehicles around, but she also exploited her sword's tranformation powers, used psychology and was a better tactictician in the use of her allies' powers) not to mention that while Adam had to pretend to be a lazy spoiled brat to cover upt his secret identity, Adora was notoriously a kick-ass even in her non-magical form.
I appreciated the slight nods this series made to the original and to the original concepts of the series (before the Filmation took the series, it was all about She-Ra and Catra's rivalry) as well as the references to the MOTU universe in general (like the Despondos thing, the techno-magic nature of Etheria as a whole - like the runestones thing which explains why Etheria is way more diverse and filled with magic than Eternia - and the redesign of Light Hope as a sort of "holographic Sorceress") but there are things that left me quite perplexed.
While I can overlook things like Glimmer being a dismissive spoiled brat (if they decided that was her character, what can you do? At least it makes sense), Seahawk being turned into a comedic intermission and Castaspella being turned into a stereotyped aunt, I can't help to wonder why they made some choices they made in the redesign.
I love how diverse the cast is, but why changing them so much from the original? I don't talk about the body types or "how they look", but the character themselves.
OS's Frosta was a shameless flirtatious girl with a badass attitude, why don't keep it that way instead of turning her into a child? Including a character like that could have been a good way to show that a "pretty girl who flirts a lot" is not necessarily a "queen bee" or a stereotypical cheerleader out of a teen drama, but can be a nice person who supports her friends, and that there's nothing wrong in being friendly (hence making a lesson against "slut shaming" in the show).
It would have made more sense if the child character was Perfuma, who in the OS was this head-in-the-clouds girl who turned the Fright Zone into a spring fair the one time she was captured. With Frosta and Perfuma switched, it would have made more sense for Glimmer to be jealous of Bow (as Frosta would have invited him to the prom) and for Perfuma to ignore Adora's warning about Catra and Scorpia, as the OS's Perfuma would have more likely dismissed those claims by believeing C&S were there to have fun. It could have been a good lesson on how giving people a chance and think the best of them is good, but you always have to be careful, specially with people you don't know very well. Instead, we have a petty kid!Frosta who shields herself behind protocol because she hates Adora on the assumption she doesn't take her seriously. So what's the lesson in it? "Be always respectful to the host, even if it's a kid, because otherwise they'll become your enemies?" "If you say something that it's perceived offensive to someone, you'll be automatically wrong even if you are right?"
Then there's Entrapta: why make her a princess if she didn't even have a runestone? And what is her character supposed to mean? She's so central to the whole season's plot, yet I don't know what to make of her: she is clearly a negative character from the start (even before irresponsibly playing with unknown tech che had designed her house ad a death trap and forced three people living in it), BUT she's supposed to be one of the "good guys". Then she turns tables and joins the Horde because her "friends" abandoned her (without realizing they thought she was dead). And worst of all they made it look like it was Catra who manipulated her and talked her into joining the Horde, exploiting her alleged "innocence" when she had been a jerk since the beginning! It would have made more sense to introduce her as this tech genius who didn't pledge any allegiance and they wanted to join the rebellion because they needed her help, and since she would have been a neutral party, she could have switched sides more easily (and logically) when Catra offered her to play with the Black Garnet. She could have been a good example of those "false friends" who look friendly and hepful but are in fact selfish and self-centered, and how you can spot the signs early and avoid them.
Mermista could have been fine (I appreciated the concept of her being a bored teenager with a "whatever" attitude in sharp contrast with Glimmer) but everything around her makes her character out-of context and makes you question her leadirship skills. You've already addressed this issue, but tbh I think that even a single moment in which she snaps and tells the others that she DOES care, that she's been under pressure since she inherited the throne, but since every effort whe made didn't change the situation she just stopped to care, would have been enough to salvage her character without rewriting the whole episode (perhaps replacing the cringy exchange she has with Seahawk in which they imply they were in a relationship despite him looking much older and she looking in her mid-to-late teens... or at least tell us she's 19 or something). It would have been a good lesson about the importance of not giving up on something important if it's too hard to achieve.
But I guess it's not the 80s anymore so cartoons don't have to teach morals anymore?

    • @CaffeineDeprivation
      @CaffeineDeprivation 5 років тому +10

      Of course they don't
You see, nowadays, the most important thing for a cartoon is to be either a) funny in the most stupid and/or insulting way possible, OR b) politically correct in the "right way". (Who cares what the audience wants??)
If you've somehow created a series that's both at the same time, you pretty much have a masterpiece in your hands!

    • @MagnusKraken
      @MagnusKraken 5 років тому +10

@@CaffeineDeprivation That's not entirely true, but I guess it depends on the target audience: there are cartoons (mostly targeted to little kids) that still try to teach you a lesson in the process of entertaining, but this becomes more rare as the target audience grows. Thing is any moral lesson in a kid's/teen targeted showe story is always implicit rather than explained to you at the end of the show like the Filmation cartoons did in the 80s, so it becomes open to interpretation - when it doesn't fly right over your head.
I mean, the classic episode plot in which the protagonist can't do something on their own then asks for help and they succeed it's still used today, the difference is that at the end of the show there's no annoying side character telling you "Did you see what happened to Protagonist? If you can't do something on your own, ask for help!" (unless the show is targeted 2-5 y.o. and even in that case they say that during the episonde rather than in an epilogue).
Animated series with complex stories do touch complex morals and topics even nowadays, but sometimes they forgot how to do it properly. Look at this series: the "betrayal of a friend" is a recurring theme (Catra/Adora, Bow/Glimmer, Princesses/Entrapta) which could have been very interesting but was treated badly, sparsely and poorly.

even with what they were going for... i can see some potential. The problem being you should know what you are capable off and the writers of the show definitely did not do well. They had some interesting ideas, and they had potential to develop them, yet they never really explored them or gave themselves away to either. At moments i just felt like they have been arguing like little siblings drawing on top of each others pictures... I could just see how several "groups" wanted to have totally different take on the show and Noel was the big one that pushed west agenda, "message" they say, "representation" they say. Probably some writers tried to do what they can behind the scenes but that probably was not their biggest priority so yeah...
I do not think cartoons or anything should teach morals really. It is art, and about telling stories... it does not always have to be about simple lessons and messages or worse - being a fuking commercial the way She-ra's reboot was. As long as you give yourself to something, as long as there is good writing that make sense i do not care who is morally right or wrong or whatever. It is about being interesting.
Personally i was never a big fan of people looking down on children and probably would not enjoy Perfuma being the child, repeating the same trope we have seen so many times once more, but if that is the price of Frosta being closer to her original self and actually making more sense for the story i will take it...

How funny it is that Bo's VA acted like the original was beneath him, when the iteration he portrays is mad that the princesses that came where not the right ones. I fairly sure the OG Bo would have been joyful to see fellow resistance fighters no mater who it was. He's face is just "Oh, right. You two." and let's be honest; I doubt any of them know what they do. I'm going to be blunt; the 'best friend squad' is comprised of all assholes. I feel like Stevenson was made to include them, but didn't want to which would explain their lack of dialog to cut down on paying actors for voice work- and again, just their to reinforce that they're in a relationship. This in itself wouldn't be such a big deal, if every outlet didn't make such a big deal out of it.
Why is Adora all of a sudden blaming herself for everything? Self-reproach for everything of the blue is not a sign of character growth. It's learning from mistakes, and Adora's biggest is being friends with Catra and in some cases Glimmer as they both seem manipulative and abusive.
How ironic is is that the pudgy princess with wind powers was not only able to move herself much, but couldn't even blow away the enemy tanks? I just find it hilarious they did that. I guess she just got _winded_ quickly. I don't apologize. You know this show deserves the roast.
All-in-all; The episode ends the most anti-climatic way that a mediocre show with such high praise from outlets could. With a care bare stare rainbow beam. I honestly saw one screencap from this episode and called that. People I was debating over this show went from loud and obnoxiously defending it to deathly silent.
We know "Season 2" won't be any better. Many shows, Dreamworks included love to cut the season they're given in half to make it look like they are given more then they actually are. It's still Season 1, and I doubt Hasbro really wants to continue with this, considering there isn't even a toy line. A toy company not making merchandise for show. That's very telling.

Keep in mind, they had this second season secured from before production even started "Season" is a very loose term when dealing with a Netflix serial since they just buy a number of episodes and portion it out. So they most likely already have the core scenario extending to episode 26 already mostly planned out.
That being said, they marketed Netossa and Spinnerella way too hard in the prelaunch promotionals and made them look like a much bigger deal than they actually were for the start of the series. In the end of the day, they effectively debuted in this episode since a single sight gag with them in the 3rd or so episode is not a sufficient introduction when they have no lines until 10 episodes later. If I had to wager a shot in the dark guess- they were pushed to hard for the lesbian diversity points (since their marketing heavily relied on representation over everything else) in addition to Stevenson herself voicing Spinnerella. The former reason ends up being pretty moot when they've also said in interviews literally everyone in the cast is gay unless stated otherwise.

I'm honestly more disappointed than I am angry. Even though I knew that I'd get something terrible when I decided to watch it, part of me wishes that this series was good. It had the potential to be a great reboot, but because it's made by SJW assholes who only care about pushing an agenda than telling a good story, it is not. For all this series does wrong, I do see a good series buried in here. If I was to direct this reboot, I'd focus more on the relationship between Adora and Catra and how they grew from loving each other at the beginning, to mortal enemies. Adora is now in the company of people who care about her, but in order to achieve this, she had to lose that one person she cares the most about. Where's Catra is surrounded by people who care about her as well, but she reject their comfort and support, and only accepts it from Adora or Hordak, whom she starts to see as a father figure out of desperation, who has a bad influence on her. It may not be the most original, but it's better than the crap we actually got.

they were just bad writers and with the social justice warriors behind what probably was going to be poorly written anyway despite all great ideas and potential just came out even worse... There were tons of things that deserved so much better, tons of interesting themes that could have been explored but unfortunately they did not... It felt like the writers and Noel were all fighting between themselves as everyone tried to push what they think is the best ignoring the others.
Personally i think the show deserves admiration for being able to offending and getting criticism for so many differnet things from so many different people with different values. Some say it is about morals, some claim they pissed off even the gays with their loose "representation", some like me hate the writing and cinematography etc, some talk about disrespect towards the original source, others complain for the art style or animation quality... somehow this was a disaster in the eyes of all audiences.

    Here's how'd I'd write it;
Hordak commands Entrapta to build him robot troopers that are more durable than his flesh and blood ones. Entrapta says
she needs a stronger power source to power them up. Hordak, realizing that Shadow Weaver, the main person who HE ordered to bring back Adora, failed all her missions, kills her and uses the giant crystal(I forgot the name of it, sorry) to power up all his new soldiers. He also had a specialized mech for himself(we'll call it Hordebot Alpha), but Catra, wanting her battle with Adora to be personal, steals it and takes off with the rest of the mech troopers.
Cut to She-Ra and the Sparkle Crew getting wrecked by these new troops. Bow's arrows are nothing but paintballs as he gets hit with an uppercut knocking him to the ground. Glimmer's teleporting becomes useless as the reflexes of the troopers are superior enough to overpower her. And then here comes Catra, coming in with Hordebot Alpha. Feeling nothing but rage after the countless amounts of times she's tried to persuade her to rejoin Hordak, only has one objective: kill She-Ra.
After learning about the She-Ra inheritance, Adora storms into battle, a giant amongst ants, tearing through the troopers like a hot knife through butter. With the mindset to destroy all Horde enforcements clouding up her mind, she runs up to Hordebot Alpha and slices it in half effortlessly. Cut to a still of She-Ra slashing through the mech(like those stills animes used to do). Through the wreckage, She-Ra sees the body of Catra lying unconscious. She turns back into Adora to check up on her fallen friend, only to have her rise up and slash at her with her claws. "Why did you do this? You could've prevented this! Remember the times where we laughed at the princesses and their flashy clothes? Where did the love go, Adora? Do you WANT to be the reason Brightmoon falls?"
"I know where I stand. And I'm not going anywhere...old friend."
Knowing that her words won't move Adora, Catra runs away, with her tail literally between her legs. Then Adora checks up on her friends to see if they're okay. They all celebrate after successfully driving off the Horde. The camera then pans out to reveal Hordak atop a mountain, looking at Castle Brightmoon from afar. "So, my greatest soldier became the strongest being on this pathetic space rock? It doesn't matter. Friends come and go, but the Horde will last forever..."
Let me know what you guys think!

    • @unigenius
      @unigenius 5 років тому +12

I was with you up to when She-Ra easily beat Catra in Hordebot Alpha. Maybe even when she storms into battle. This version of Adora has no idea how to use She-Ra's powers. However, the second episode showed that She-Ra can have this mode where it's more like the Avatar State and does stuff outside of Adora's control. I think that should be what takes over at the minute when everyone is backed against the wall by these new troopers and fancy new Hordebot. So she starts wrecking everyone and turning the tide of battle. But then Adora snaps out of the trance when she realizes that Hordebot Alpha is being piloted by Catra, whom she rescues from it before it ultimately blows up. She's fully apologetic to Catra, but Catra isn't having it, being completely unaware that She-Ra was in control and not adora. This makes Catra double down on her idea that they are no longer friends and completely unsalvageable. Then Catra uses some distant explosion as a distraction to escape. Hordak didn't really care about Adora nor She-Ra, so he wouldn't really comment on it.

    1. Netossa and spinnerella. Chekov's lesbian couple. This is why diversity isn't a selling point for a series. Their flagship thesis, set aside, literally chekov's. And on spinnerella, the new method of using her abilities is why the fat jokes were precognitive. The creator played DND, she knows how magic works, but she played a warlock so verbal components are ignored.
    2. I get bow's reaction, but not for the reason you would think. Bow always been the odd man out. Everytime he suggested something, tactical or otherwise, was literally laughed at for suggesting something because of the lipstick lesbian couple. Now an actual lesbian couple showed up, he probably would have been arrested post battle on average, summary execution would be my bet.
    3. When I heard about the rainbow attack, I rolled my eyes. It was described as a angry lesbian care bear stare, and I agree. The power of gay to compel the straight away! I told my gay friends about it, 3 out of 5 said really?! My artist friend drew a angry lesbian care bear, because that's basically the real premise of the series. And the last friend wasn't sure if he should facepalm or Neal Patrick Harris joke.

They have skiffs that can fly like speeders in Star Wars, we see Catra and Scorpia fly off in what looks like a spaceship, and yet the Horde hasn't produced squadrons of bombers, dive-bombers, fighters, escorts, etc to use against Brightmoon? If you control the sky, you can control the battlefield. Do they not have enough pilots? Did they run out of pilots like the Luftwaffe did in World War II? No wonder the Horde sucks at warfare.

The show was honestly a disaster from the start to the finish - what was meant to be empowering shows entirely the opposite, 'capable female leaders,' making reckless choices and downright questionable at best - moments of development are quickly backpedalled in the favour of the next humorous point. A show can work with humour, case and point in Avatar, but the growth felt superficial and didn't just feel genuine? It was either rushed or squashed in, only, not to matter an episode later.
I did actually like Glimmer, and if her character was better written, I would have enjoyed her a lot more. I did like her, I honestly did and I liked her re-design, but in Princess Prom, I wished she focused more on the rebellion, rather than 'friendship problems,' but meh. Empowering females didn't care about their Kingdom, purposefully endangered their Kingdom or were treated as nothing - just what is empowering about that? Inclusive characters were treated as nothing in itself, wasted space and air.
The Horde seemed more befitting of a Saturday Cheesy Special - the seriousness and some of the tension just didn't hit me; considering what we saw already. Catra is an interesting character and a dynamic that is good, but I wished she wasn't rewarded almost every other episode. I wish she had her own success that merited what she got; not plot armour.
She-Ra and the Princess of Powers is honestly a flat three to me, some of the ideas and character designs were nice, but too many errors, opposite to what they were trying to achieve and they should have left the name She-Ra out of this.

I'm pretty sure that you can just edit them out and nothing will change. I actually forgot they existed when I saw that episode.

A lackluster ending to a lackluster season.
And given that the current series of MLP isn't even the first to do the whole 'DEFEAT THE BADDIE WITH RAINBOWS!!11' shit, can it just be said that nothing in this show is revolutionary, like....at all? Getting up to this point in the series, the whole thing has been a mediocre waste of time and energy with far too much ego behind it for its own good. Had Noelle and her crew just been lax about it, not bringing up 'toxic masculinity' or being disrespectful asshole to both older fans and the creators of the original show, I would have been a lot more patient with them. I wouldn't let it be an excuse for the show being so slowly paced but I would have at least a lot more open about the show but they ruined that moment themselves by acting like jackasses.
She-Ra is yet another reboot that needs to go down on how not to do it; how not to treat the original source, how not to create your own timeline for the reboot and how not to treat fans, whether they be older fans or new ones. The whole series just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I'm far more bothered at the pretentiousness of Noelle n crew than the show sucking as a whole and I'll tell you why.
Noelle and a lot of current animators in her group are being held not only in high regard but are being set up as the standard. This should be a worrying sign for a lot of fledgling animators who actually care because shows like She-Ra are setting the bar incredibly low. Shows like She-Ra and other bad reboots and even new IPs are setting a mindset that you don't have to try at all. You don't have to world build, you don't have to develop your characters and so on. All you have to do is project yourself and how important YOU, or better yet your LABELS, are in order to get attention and praise. Most of the praise from this show is always aimed at how 'diverse' it is when for any well-adjusted weeb or even fans of older series know that there is not one thing that this reboot does that has broken ANY grounds at all.
Gay characters? Even in US shows? In a POSITIVE light? Been done before.
Fat characters that aren't jokes? Been done before.
    Black characters? Been done before.
Female lead? It's a reboot of a female lead series so IT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE.
Hell, even behind the scenes there is nothing ground breaking about this series so in the end, the show is not just mediocre, it's mediocre without a goal all the while pretending that it has done something. Hell, even as sick as people are with the fan art, it's not even new in shipping. Tumblr was already flooded with underage lesbian porn fanart before this shit arrived. (whomp whoooomp)
I have a feeling that one the show is over and time has passed people won't talk about Nu-Ra. It just doesn't have the lasting touch as the original show and for all it tries to do to appease a crowd that no one wants, I can beat that in five years those same people will find something 'problematic' about this whole series, making all attempt to draw this crowd in completely pointless.

It looks like they traced a how to draw Anime book. *Edit:* I figured out why they didn't nail the anime look. Gotta say, even though I despise Steven Universe (stopped watching aeound season 2 because I got too annoyed at the main characters, Peridot is the only character I like now), it's vastly better than She-Ra because it does at least have an interesting setting and tries to tell a good story. The characters' sexualities are not their main selling point, but rather their backstories is what keeps them interesting.

This was, quite possibly, the absolute worst finale to a show I have ever seen, and I didn't even watch it!
Everything that happens in this episode, *everything,* is so poorly constructed that it hurts. There is no doubt in my mind that this whole "season 2" thing is just season 1 split into two parts, because there is no way in hell this show is coming back based on merit.
I have to ask, what made this better than the original? There is no character development, barely any plot, and a veritable sea of bad animation. I swear, I could write a book on everything that is wrong with this series, and more than half of it would cover just this finale. This show really did have potential. There were a lot of good ideas, but they are painfully underutilized.
I highly doubt season 2 is going to be any better, and I have a feeling that Netflix won't be making a season 3, and if it is, it is purely from the fact that Netflix, as a company, has money to blow.
All in all, this episode was terrible, and when season 2 comes out, I pray it's better, but I'm quite sure it won't be.

Question... okay so at 12:41 She-Ra has new-ish armor I guess and I assume it was from Glimmer's armory? Did they just have upgrades for only Bow, Glimmer and She-Ra's basic outfits? Also that sword turning into shield thing is still not explained. Even the first time it just "happened" with no commands or any explaining of why...
Also I always figured She-Ra was nigh invulnerable to harm... how's she taking damage from a 15-year-old humanoid girl cat's claws? For that matter, that "armor" must be made of tissue paper...

And about Entrapta, I kinda think they copied a character from "Sora Wo Kakeru Shoujo". This show was disappointing on so many levels. I wanted to like the show, I really did, but when you talk a big game and you execute it poorly it’s not going to receive any kind of good credit.
The show runners made a lot of promises when marketing this “reboot” and followed with untrue criticism of the original. They promised representation and the finale just had us learn that there have been two gay characters this whole time, and every princess was incompetent at being a leader. So much for women empowerment in the late 2010s. And then the whole thing with consent that you’ve mentioned multiple times.
Overall, I think this She-Ra is terrible. But then again, this was just the first season, which means there’s a 50/50 chance it could get worse like Supergirl or it could get better from building off of the mistakes that were made. I love this series you two have made. You two did great and I can’t wait to for your next video. ❤️

I know I sound like a broken record when saying this, BUUUUUUUUUTTTT.... Read the 2012 Nasters of the Universe Comic by DC. It’s fun, exciting, great art, and has a really interesting version of Adora. It starts of with her conquering Brightmoon and either killing or enslaving the inhabitants. On top of that you get a Rapunzel Mother Gothel relationship with her and Shadoweaver. Adora is constantly afflicted by visions of her past and what she will become, and shadoweaver constantly mindwipes her, with it working less and less every time.
