  • Our review of episode 11 of She-ra and the Princesses of Power, "Promise". We know that this is a well-liked episode, even among those who are critical of the show. We liked that this episode was more character focused and didn't focus too much on drawn-out comic moments, but we felt that it was too focused on Catra and Adora was sidelined. It's okay to disagree. At least Glimmer isn't in this episode.

    IMO this season needed to focus on five things:
    1. Adora's character development and training as She-ra.
    2. The Rebellion's struggle against The Horde where we actually see them fight.
    3. Catra's development as a villain and her place in The Horde.
    4. Shadoweaver's reasons as to why she's obsessed with getting Adora back.
    5. Actually have Hordak do something other than sitting there...MENACING!
    Lower the silly-billy humor and trim the useless fat (like Princess Prom) and the show might be decent.

      Personally, I think waiting on Hordak would be fine as a way to build tension. However, we know they can't build to a climactic payoff to save their lives, so it's just a moot point.

    Along with the others here, I like your deeper thinking about this subject. The episodes is really imbalanced and does give insight into Noelle's preferences. I never delved into why, but I was quite dissatisfied with the payoff, and now I think it's because Adora doesn't defend herself enough, she's too wooden. She just accepts Catra's accusations and replies with apologies or canned lines that don't make it sound like she's really listening. I think the only human thing in the episode was when she tried to keep Catra from reliving the bad memory (which in retrospect was not that bad, it probably should have been darker).
    I'm really glad I subscribed. I hope you guys are able to make a name for yourselves.

    Shadow's obsession with Adora was always something I think they could have done way better. Have Shadow treat Adora like if she was her actual daughter, but I mean in a bigger manner, having Shadow completely changing her voice tone and manner of speaking around Adora, seeming like a different person in when she's alone with her (maybe even be a sign that her old self is still alive somewhere). Maybe in that memory land that Catra and Adora got stuck in Catra could see how different Shadow got and almost be horrified and angry seeing how nice she treated Adora, maybe even show to Adora how terrifying to the others Shadow was

      Here's one more thing to have; have Hordak and Adora be the only ones who know what SW's real face looks like and have that later be used as a means of Adora feeling guilt between betraying the Horde, especially AFTER she learns about SW previous life as Light Spinner.

    Nu-Ra seems based on one or two episodes of the 80's show. One of them being, the Stone in the Sword. Adora's stone in her sword breaks, and she has to find the 'First One's', to help her mend it. The episode is mainly about Adora and how she embodies the qualities of She-Ra. But it's not done in the 'pat yourself on the back' way the new show takes it's time to do. Adora's up a mountain, skidding down stairs ahead of a spiky ball, dodging her way through what is essentially a arrow trapped hallway and walked up to a Rakdos Circus concert. All in about 6 minutes? Nu-Ra takes 6 minutes to whine and complain and express the feelz.

    You know, unlike Catra and Adora, at least Julius Caesar and Titus Labienus had understandable reasons why they became enemies. When Caesar began his governorship of 3 provinces he had Labienus serve as his second-in-command, and Labienus deserves at least half the credit for Caesar's conquest of Gaul. When the Senate declared Caesar as an enemy of the Republic, he crossed the Rubicon and Rome entered a civil war. Labienus was shocked by this, and wasn't even consulted on the matter. In response, Labienus left Gaul and sided with Caesar's enemies, without attempting to steal away Caesar's legions when he could have. Caesar repeatedly extended many olive branches, pardoning him as he did for many of those who sided against him, but Labienus would slap down every single one. When Labienus died during the Battle of Munda, Caesar buried Labienus with full military honors and won the civil war for the third and final time. Why does that dynamic sound so much better than what Netflix gave us in She-Ra?

    To me, I honestly think the writers love Catra more than Adora for reasons I honestly don't want to hear; mainly because they might all be about mommy issues or something along those lines. Adora still feels like this doormat of a character, or better yet a cardboard cut out on wheels, if the writers properly conveyed how much of an impact Adora and Catra made on each others lives instead of telling us when it's plot convenient this episode would have made more sense. Honestly...the show should have been called Catra and showed her times in the Horde since her story shows more development and often more than times favored over Adora's story. Even I find myself liking Scorpia and Entrapta despite some of their weird written flaws and not seeing a single episode of the series and only these reviews.

    I thought the ruins only acknowledged She-Ra. Why is it showing Catra her own memories if the entire facility sees her as a threat? Hell, technically, by the logic presented, Adora shouldn't be able to see her memories either, because she's not in her She-Ra form. What makes all of this worse is the fact that Adora is *supposed* to remove herself from all attachments so that she can become the avatar - err,I mean She-Ra. So why is there technology in the ruins that would be able to specifically remind her of her previous attachments, such as friends and loved ones?
    It just makes no sense...

      @annemarieching1451 5 років тому +9

      Alex Kennard Of course I’m not a writer of the show so I can’t say anything for sure, but there’s a promising theory going around that Light Hope manipulated both Catra and Adora’s memories to drive Catra to push Adora away once and for all, and aid Adora in letting her go. This would confirm why it shows Adora’s memories and not She-Ra’s, as in one of the earlier episodes Lighthope repeatedly says “Adora” rather than “She-Ra”. While the facility could have simply killed Catra, that would’ve been ineffective and probably counterproductive towards grooming Adora for the She-Ra role, as it might have turned Adora against the First Ones and Lighthope.

    • @alexkennard2422
      @alexkennard2422 5 років тому +6

      @@annemarieching1451 That makes no sense to me, because that means that Light Hope could have easily shown Adora and Catra memories of them getting along, having fun and protecting one another than, rather than memories that would tear them apart. Why is the being that tells Adora that she needs to "bring balance to the world" doing the one thing that would create further conflict? Why not make them friends?
      To me, this is just further proof that the writers are trying to steal from Avatar: The Last Airbender. In that series, it made sense for the guru to tell Aang that he had to let go of Katara, because the Avatar has to act as a force to save everyone. However, if you notice, the guru told Aang to let go of his attachment to Katara, not his friends. That means his love for Katara.
      The writers of She-Ra, on the other hand, translated that to "you must abandon all your friends" while directly contradicting that point by showing that She-Ra has to act with other princesses to keep the world safe. They have made the mistake of telling us that She-Ra has to be detached from society and the powers that be while showing us that she needs to maintain a connection with everyone around her. Again, it reads like a poor man's Avatar, at least to me.

    • @annemarieching1451
      @annemarieching1451 5 років тому +2

      @@alexkennard2422 It seems that every adventure-based cartoon somehow draws from Avatar, as it is a fantastic series that covered many different issues over its many episodes. Although I do see your point regarding the guru-Lighthope parallel, the point of driving Catra away from Adora was specifically so Adora would agree to the isolated training and accept her role as She-Ra fully. The only reason as to why they didn't show Bow and Glimmer's memories with her I'm guessing is because they weren't with her at the time, and in the end Adora didn't need those memories to agree to the training -- it was only after they showed up in person that she refused Lighthope.
      She-Ra can still work with the other princesses, including Glimmer, while being detached from friendships. It's not that she has to be detached from society, because society and the world is what she's trying to bring balance to and save. It's just that being more partial to one princess or one group of people over another would cause conflict to bringing peace to the entire world as an individual -- as Lighthope puts it.
      Being attached to Glimmer, Bow, and Catra makes it hard for her to say yes to the She-Ra training and responsibility. Just imagine if Lighthope had shown Adora all of those good nostalgic Catra memories -- do you think she would've said yes to the isolated training any faster now that she's reconciled with her best friend since childhood?
      I think you're mistaking the writer's opinion with Lighthope's. The overarching theme in this show, like Avatar and many others, is that people are stronger when they work together.

    • @alexkennard2422
      @alexkennard2422 5 років тому +2

      @@annemarieching1451 I can see your point, I can, but your ending statement of "people are stronger when they work together" only reinforces my viewpoint. There is no reason for what Light Hope is doing in my eyes. Light Hope could have easily brought Catra to the side of good to fight against those who hurt and manipulate her, if that is her plan, by showing her all of the memories of the time she was abused by her superiors. In fact, that's exactly what they were doing when they showed that Adora was sticking up for Catra when she had issues with Octavia and Shadow Weaver. So why on Earth would Light Hope pivot Catra's memories towards moments that would leave her to be upset with Adora rather than her abusers? And again, it does not change the fact that Light Hope would have made two friends into bitter enemies for the sake of making the supposed savior into a force that would bring balance to the world, which in itself is a concept that's so nebulous in this show that it hinders on being pointless.
      Think about it. What if Adora was still a member of the Horde while she was She-Ra? Would she bring "balance" by defeating the good guys? It would make sense seeing as the forces of good have ruled the planet for ages now. Can't have good without evil, right? In that case, it would be okay for She-Ra to slaughter millions of innocent people because there's just to much benevolence in the world.
      I get the same concept could apply to Avatar, but there is a slight difference. Avatar cares about worldbuilding. This show hasn't cared nearly enough about doing the same. This is why the show manages to move too slow and too fast at the same time. Things just happen with no real rhyme or reason.
      Oh look, a Horde soldier has been granted the power of an ancient warrior? Let's not question her loyalties and blindly trust she's on our side!
      Hey, look! That abused cat girl hates her captors. Let's make her go back to them over and over again because she's having a pretty squabble with the one person who seemed to actually care about her!
      Oh hey, a prom! Let's invite the evil side to the party because we're impartial, and can't possibly conceive the fact that the people we're allowing to attend this party literally want to take our kingdom and enslave or slaughter our citizens!
      It just does not make any sense to me. I want this show to be good, I really do, and I hope season 2 is better, but right now, the series is in shambles, at least in my eyes.

    This series really loves Catra! I'll admit, i rooted for Catra and Shadow Weaver way more in the original series than I did She-Ra. But mostly only when they had a really good plans and She-Ra had to use protagonist powers to win. But this series is different. This series gives Adora nearly no development! In fact, Catra is the most developed character in the series! No one else has this much backstory and such! And the writers REALLY don't care about Adora! She has even less development than Glimmer! She just goes along with whatever someone says! She's exactly what Catra accused her of in the first episode, a people-pleaser.
    And this show is so inconsistent with She-Ra! Is she a whole other entity or just a power-up? Because when we first see her, she's like Aang lost in the avatar state. But from then on, she and adora seem to be the exact same.

    In the beginning I had a theory that Shadow Weaver needed Adora in connection to that crystal-the other princesses seemed related to their crystals so SW hijacking Adora's crystal & needing to get her back or lose her stolen connection would have made sense to me & given SW valid motivation to why she wanted Adora so much. I'm starting to wonder if I gave the writers too much credit (granted this is really half of season 1 based on how Netflix splits their seasons)

  • @Selvokaz
    @Selvokaz 5 років тому +7

    this is just a theory, but I think Shadowweaver literally sees herself in Adora. Like we know it's not because of her She-Ra powers that Shadowweaver favors Adora, because she's liked her more since she was a child, a baby even. So either Shadow Weaver developed maternal extinct's for Adora because she raised from a baby up until the present, or and this is the theoratical part, Adora looks like what Shadowweaver looked like in her past. Think about it for a second, in all the horde we've seen so far only two people have fair skin and blond hair, Adora was one, and Kyle was the other. Scorpia has fair skin, but she's not blond, and she's kind of awkwardly big, as in fearsome, despite her girly personality. Anyway, perhaps this relates to Shadow Weaver on some level, we know Shadow Weaver's appearance isn't her original one, and her name reflects a inverse sort of that being Light to Shadow. What if her physical appearance is a reflection of her old nature to her new one? Light to Dark in terms of appearance, well if you flipped her appearance around her dark/greyish skin would become fair-pinkish skin, and her black hair would likely be blondish right? Her reptilian green eyes might go from green to normal human-like blue eyes? There are a few fan images out there about this new incarnation of she-ra that seems to also subcribe to this possibility, in that Light Spinner looking similar to Adora in her youth. This would be another great reason as to why Adora can do no wrong in Shadow Weavers eyes.

It feels very forced especially for the machine that make them go trhough their memories, we never get to know how the machine works or even why it works that way. It could be possible that Shadoweaver is an allegory for the She-Ra fanbase that prefer the old She-Ra/Adora while Hordak is an allegory for the people who like the reboot, or Catra. Think about it, we're not given a reason why Shadoweaver goes out her way in favor of Adora in a way that the people who defend this show don't really understand why most old fans prefer the old show. Hordak just blindly gives Catra a pass and promotion as time goes on despite her failures.
    Show would be decent if all the characters were written well or given clear motivation rather than "reliving their teen angst". X-Men TAS had angst but it wasn't relegated to just one character. Everyone in X-Men had their own issues dealing with being with mutants be it Cyclops' inability to look at anything without his visor on or Rogue's inability to touch someone without putting them in a coma.
    Most of this shows problems is that their character development is usually petty or irrelevant. Glimmer keeps messing up but wants to be taken seriously but she doesn't grow from her experiences. Bow is basically a man-servant whose constantly re-assuring and apologizing despite several claims not being his fault.
    Everyone has to apologize for your fuck ups and not the other way around. So much victim blaming in these modern cartoons. Adora did nothing wrong but defect from the Horde. It's not like she tricked Catra and Shadoweaver betraying their trust from the start. But, she's apologizing as if she ruined Catra's life. This is also why I got annoyed/bored with Steven Universe as well. The same shit. People blaming others for their problems and not taking responsibility for themselves when they actually caused it. It's only a toxic relationship if you keep going back. We've told you not to go back but you keep going back. It's not my fault after that.
    It does sicken me seeing people "like" Catra because she's so "well-written". And the "Princess Prom".
    Let me back up. In the 80s She-Ra, the villages that were under the Horde at least had a school system that would teach young children "how great the Horde is". This was a village I believe Bow came across in one of the episodes. Either him or Adora. HOWEVER, Adora or Bow tried to convince the kids that the Horde are baddies. To which, some of the kids don't trust them. However, by the end of the episode, the kid saw the wrong the Horde was doing and sided with Adora or Bow. As campy as you want to claim the 80s cartoons are, at least they've had forethought about how they want the cartoons to go.
    These modern cartoons like to focus way too much on one or two characters that the entire cast becomes irrelevant. The Mistakor episode could have been a flashback episode of Shadoweaver's rise and fall while she's still trying to reclaim Adora. It could have Castaspella's backstory of why her and Angela had a falling out as well.
    That one kid that made a Dexter Laboratory cartoon that Genndy Tartakovsky hosted on Cartoon Network back in the 90s is far more enjoyable than this She-Ra reboot.

    I heard somebody theorize that Hordak is intentionally playing Shadow Weaver and Catra against each other. He might know how treacherous Shadow Weaver is and how desperate Catra is for approval, and so he pits them against each other to keep either from thinking of turning on him.
    Maybe he knew what Shadow Weaver was doing when she took credit for Catra's work, and when it failed he punished Shadow Weaver instead of shoving the blame onto Catra like the sorceress would do. It sends a message that, unlike Catra's mother, he is fair toward his subordinates. This instills loyalty to him into Catra, and if Shadow Weaver keeps butting heads with the girl it just means she is wasting time and power on that instead of trying to stab her boss in the back.
    The details of the theory are explained better in the Tumblr post I originally heard it from.
    I don't personally know what all to think of that, but it does help to make Hordak actually seem more competent.

    I just realized, why is the face reveal showing Shadoweaver's face is scarred important? What does that imply?>

    At least in Season 2 Shadoweaver's backstory finally gets explained.(Best episode in the series.)
    But really this episode made me dissapointed in Cat-rah as a charater.
    In my mind they were building up to Cat-ra's redemption, but the writers chose to have her choose
    evil over something so minor.
    Skylanders Acadmey actually dose the best friends on opposite sides idea better during the
    Season 3 run. So pretty much I can call Dark Spyro and Stealth Elf better written
    versions of Reboot Cat-rah and Adora!

    Best episode of the series, exactly because is one sided and only focus on the best character (the only one not openly annoying).
    On a different topic, I have to admit that the writers, in the whole series, managed to deliver a very powerful pro-Hordak propaganda. I'm completely pro-Horde now. Even if Hordak displays questionable managerial skills, still seem the less incompetent ruler of the whole planet. And the territory under his command seems the most economically prosperous.

    I don’t know why but after watched the last episode, I REALLY want to see Adora fights Cathra in a way like till one drop dead? (Maybe not that far but something like that) since they are clearly on a different side of the war. Also, Cathra might be the who start the fight since she want to prove to the horde and shadow weaver that she is better than Adora as revenge or something?

    it's a simple matter, Shadowreaver is based on the sorceress from the 80s he-man cartoon, who afaik is Adora's biological mother, so basically her character's concept is the "evil mom" concept turned around, when love turns into zealous overprotection and threatens to hurt of other beings that arent her offspring.
    and if you dont believe her character is the sorceress, the fact is literally stated to us in th sky temple thingie episode.

    My reasoning to why Shadow Weaver favours Adora and hates Catra (shown through my fanfiction) is that Shadow Weaver is Adora's biological mother and sees Catra starting to crush on Adora but doesn't approve of Catra being Adora's girlfriend.
