I see Catra's redemption arc compared to Zuko's a lot and it never fails to rub me the wrong way. Zuko's arc is infinitely better done and it really comes down to two things, motivation and scale. Zuko's motivation for his heel-face turn comes from a genuinely noble place that was built up across three well written seasons. Season 3 sees Zuko on top of the world, he's earned his way back into the line for the throne, he's praised as a hero by both his kingdom and his Father, and he's made a deep and powerful connection with Mai. He has everything he could have ever wanted but his experiences traveling with his uncle and living among common people have shifted his world view and made him realize that he cannot support the Fire Nation anymore. Him joining the Gaang is a massive sacrifice, it's throwing away everything he's worked his whole life to achieve, but he knows that he has to do it to save the world. Contrast this with Catra, whose motivation for turning basically boils down to being out of options. Saving Glimmer is an (arguably) noble act but it's only brought on because Horde Prime is too smart for her to usurp. Catra does her "one good deed" for primarily selfish reasons, to spite Horde Prime and impress Adora even if she dies in the process. If Prime had strung her along, maybe promised to chip Adora and let Catra have her, then it's doubtful Catra would have bothered to turn. Even at her best Catra's motivations never really evolve beyond her own gratification, she's with the Horde because they flatter her ego by deferring to her and then she's with the Princesses because they flatter her ego by absolving her of sin. Catra's motivation for turning isn't very admirable but it could have still lead to a satisfying character arc if the scale of her evil deeds wasn't so vast. For contrast, even at his most selfish and evil Prince Zuko still has a set of standards that he adheres to. He does some dark deeds in his pursuit of the Avatar but he never crosses the line into true evil, whenever he's given the choice between the lives of his allies and the Avatar he (granted with some hesitation) chooses to save lives over catching Aang. Even his worst moment, siding with Azula at Ba Sing Se, only happens because Azula convinces him that that course of action is in the Fire Nation's best interests. His decision becomes even more understandable when you consider that Zuko has just been to Lake Laogai and has seen first hand the depths the Dai Li can sink to. Catra tries to destroy the universe and is indirectly responsible for the death of Queen Angela. Nothing that Prince Zuko does in his series comes close to matching that level of callous evil. Hell even Azula, Fire Lord Ozai and Horde Prime never achieve that level of cosmic cruelty. The rule of genocidal tyrants is awful but complete oblivion still firmly tops it on the list of terrible fates. I could go into greater detail about how personally vile Catra is, how her own genocidal tendencies are motivated by her abusive "love" for Adora, but it would be pointless. It does not matter how cute her sneeze is or how bad her childhood was, Catra tried to commit the greatest atrocity a sapient being can perform and the story ending with her rolling around in a pastel garden with her abuse victim is disgusting. I would like to thank you all for attending my TED talk, I hope everyone reading this comes away with a better appreciation for why the Chad Fire Lord is greater than the Virgin Genocide Cat. #HangCatraforWarCrimes
@@ValenArtsAnimation They'll do a shit ton of mental gymnastics just like they did when Crimson was critical of Adora not wanting to sacrifice herself. "Like oh my god! You know that heros are people right?! She doesn't wanna to die!" Well suck it up buttercup. A bunch of characters are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the world even if they're scared. What's Adora's excuse?
I understand that Catra's lashing out at her allies is an expression of the guilt, anger, and hatred she feels towards herself, but that doesn't give her the right to project her angst onto others or to emotionally abuse Adora. Catradora isn't a friends to lovers romance, it's a cautionary tale.
Even ruby and sapphire from SU had more screentime and dialouge and a backstory. Compared to Nets and Spins. (Edit): I meant to comment this elsewhere not here.
From the flashbacks we see of Catra as a child, she's always been a violent, abusive little asshole and hasn't changed. It comes off that she wasn't even groomed to be this way. She choose to be this way from day one yet the show wants us to feel sorry for her without giving us any clear context as to why we should.
Catra is irredeemable to me, too far gone for too long, no redemption. And how did any kingdom last so long when their magical beings for princesses can’t even handle non magical villagers? Characters in this show are so weak
Exactly. I don't know why people say Catra's redemption was well written. It's not. In fact, how is this show better than the original? Because it's practically a shitty Steven Universe meets Avatar? Majority of these characters are bratty buffoons.
@@TheSpawnfan or worse, pushing them aside knocks them out!😆..wait hold on..princessESS? Please tell me they don't mean Bow too?(haven't seen the reboot because I knew it was gonna be trash)
Your MLP reference actually made me realize something that also really needs to be addressed: can we PLEASE stop comparing Catra’s “redemption arc” to Zuko’s? She actually has way more in common with Starlight Glimmer. They’re both characters that lost friends they were really closed to due to power, which caused them to become abusive to others to disguise their own pain, and both ended up nearly destroying time and space in an attempt to get revenge. The difference between the two however is not only did Starlight back off after finding out what she was doing when she nearly destroyed reality, but she got MULTIPLE seasons to reflect on her actions and develop as a character, from becoming Twilight’s pupil and rekindling her friendship with Sunburst, but even helped save Equestria from Queen Chrysalis. If anything it’s Scorpio and Entrapta that are more comparable to Zuko than Catra.
And I want to add a point to my favorite reformed villain: Sunset Shimmer. Like Catra, she's redeemed rather quickly, but the difference is that everyone doesn't instantly forgive Sunset. The entire school hates her in the 2nd movie, and even the Mane (or Humane) 6 are a bit on edge with her. She doesn't start to be liked by everyone until she stops the gang from arguing and helps them defeat the Dazzlings. It officially comes full circle when she helps the human Twilight come back from her own evil posession. "Take my hand, Twilight. Let me help you, just like someone once did for me." I might've misquoted a little, but it's still really impactful because she EARNED the respect and love from others.
We should have gotten scenes with Micah reuniting with Glimmer and Casta. He hasn't seen his sister or his daughter in years, his wife is MIA (most likely KIA) and all they give the man are dad jokes and odd quirks like calling little girls kiddo? #Micahdeservesbetter
I thought about that as well. We never see him and Casta interact! We never even really see him and Shadow Weaver interact! Such much wasted Potential. :( It could be the Name of this Show. "She-Ra: Wasted Potential"
@@gliscaradu1424 Not to mention he should HATE Catra, she sent his wife to the fucking shadow realm. Actually, has he even ever mentioned his wife? He's only talked about Glimmer, by what I recall.
THANK YOU! Of course knowing Glimmer: "Oh, you essentially killed my mother, but I never really cared for her, so let's be best friends Catra!" Catra: "Totes, and we both put ourselves first and almost destroyed the world. We're like sisters!"
The whole situation with Micah once again come off as Noelle projecting her own hate for her parents into the show and expecting everyone to agree on her POV without considering how it looks as a whole. Micah hasn't seen his wife and child for years so it's understandable for him not to fully grasp how much time has passed as well as the denial of having to accept they are not the same as when he left them. He's not someone to laugh about in this time. He's someone to sympathize with considering everything he's gone through. Everyone else comes off as looking down on him and it's one thing where they are uncomfortable with the situation but it looks and feels like we're expected to mock him. Why? Again, he's a man who's just returned after being prisoner for so many years in the middle of a war and has no idea how his family is, his family that he clearly loves more than they love him. What's even worst is Frosta's response to him because it actually contradicts how the show earlier presented her. The whole 'joke' with her was that the whole seriousness she put on was fake and she's just as much of an idiot spaztoid as everyone else, as seen when she starts acting really clingly to Glimmer. The way Micah is treating her has no harm or disrespect towards her considering that she probably is the same age that Glimmer was when he was taken away so he still has those instincts in him. But Frosta instead lashes out on him and makes him the man cry, due to it coming off that GLIMMER was the one who rejected him which would be heartbreaking. A good show would have handled that with Frosta getting a little upset but then realizing herself that Micah is the parent figure that was taken from her since she has no parents. Micah would be her connection and they could have done something with that, especially to showcase that Micah himself is still a very caring man but instead the show expects us to hate him for trying to be a good person and a good father, with Frosta in the end saying he's 'trying too hard'. Fuck you, Frosta. This is what happens when everyone is written in spite and you expect everyone to wallow in your personal misery with you. Ya know....my parents are separated but I have enough sense and humanity in me to not see every father on Earth as the type of person my dad is and doing so would be unfair on my part. But somehow Noelle thinks doing this shit makes her deep or something. All I see are badly written characters as far as I can see and a grown ass woman with petty parent issues she expects US to comfort her for. No.....no.....I'm not a therapist.
Micah was only trying to be nice and get along with them, but Frosta was being unreasonable and took everything he said to personal and that bothered me. Catra really needs to be on trial!!! Come on people, stop worrying about your ships and worry more about plot and story!!!!
OG Powerpuff Girls did the fighting people who are posessed better than this, the girls beat up the people controlled, yes, but they don't seriously hurt them, and confront the real villain Sat... HIM
Catra was actually the most like-able for me, but then again she did cross the line multiple times. She just reminds me of my cat Luna, she’s the one in my profile picture that looks like she’s about to kill some one, Luna’s mean at times about can be a sweet heart. Catra isn’t really sweet though. This was way too long, sorry for wasting your time.
Well, it does make it easy to identify with a character if you have a hidden desire to be the best and forgiven for everything what you did even though you were too lazy to earn it, potentially aiming this show at a very specific audience mostly growing up on twitter and tumblr, so... mission... accomplished? Kind of? Sort of? At least a bit? Well, Noelle got paid, at least that is something...
"...but the characters in the show don't hate her[Catra]." ...AFTER EVERYTHING SHE'S DONE IN THE SHOW UP TO MEETING HORDE PRIME?! ARE THEY NUTS?! Even the Catra from the original show would be disgusted with her!
When I'm not annoyed by the show's "humor" I'm simply _baffled_ by it. _Why_ is this considered funny to whoever thinks so? Is it a subcultural thing? A personal thing? What kids these days are into?
Catras redemption arc is awful. There's just too little time to develop the relationship the creators want with her and Adora. And it's insulting to say this considering how much time is spent on pointless filler/shipping fodder. If they wanted this relationship season 3 was their chance to actually show Catra being wrong with her methods with the whole dimension plot. But instead she actively revels in destroying everything in her path with little reason to care/change. Catra hasn't felt ANY remorse throughout this entire show for ANY of her actions so why should the audience care? Part of a redemption arc is seeing the character struggling to do good. Struggling to contain some part of their humanity. That's what makes them compelling. Wanting to do good despite your circumstances. All we see Catra do is sulk until she eventually just decides Adora is worth it now. We never see why she acts this way. She's the same character season 1 only with so little going on with her emotional other than being angry and callous that it's not fun anymore. At least season 1 Catra was somewhat sympathetic. Now they've run her course. As for this episode, once again this shows how the creators can not write conflict. War is such a huge thing to tackle in a story because it relies on so many factors/effects that can occur. Without proper worldbuilding it will fall apart. And if the lore doesn't make sense it will make the plans the characters use to look unbelievable. Like here for example. Why use magic when technology is so advanced on the Horde's side and is rather effective? What's stopping a magic user from being killed by a Lazer gun? Several times the characters use magic in the show and yet it feels so underutilized and unfocused. Original She-ra had some fluff as well, but it's main focus was always on the war against Hordak. Here, every character despite being in a war for the majority of their lives....act like normal teenagers. They don't seem to show any effects of what war would have on others. The only character that did was Angela. But she got nuked so now there's no one to ground the show. This is the last season. We shouldn't be seeing slumber parties anymore. We should be getting to the meat of the show where stuff goes down. Instead it's the same bland nonsense. *Sigh*
there was an episode in MLP:FiM where the country was run by a dictator and the main characters were in a rebellion (timeline shenanigans). And they pulled it off quite well. So a show made for actual kids did it better than a show that pretends to be for kids but is actually fetish fap fodder for young adult women
@@Mupyeong Yeah the whole bad future thing is one of the few things I know about mlp but that was very well done. Even with the entire country giving up everything they care about, the war is still at a standstill and half of it is mind controlled and conquered.
That's not really even how real teenagers act. Put real teenagers in the middle of an intergalactic war, even the craziest among them would try and take it seriously.
Mikah doesn't deserve this. Frosta is a brat just like all The Princess Allience, and is obvious that's a "gIrL PoWer" "i NeEd no MaN" move, the writers REALLY have a grudge on men huh.
I mean she is a kid, she’s still learning. The rest of the princess alliance isn’t the same because they’re either are older teenagers or young adults ( not including shadow Weaver and castaspella ). The old man part was rude but the rest isn’t that bad, she is only 11. I see you’re point though
@@Strawberrymilkshake999 yes, she's a child, but she is also a Princess who is burdened with the very Adult responsibility of leading a Kingdom/Queendom. She doesn't have the luxury of "being a kid". At least, she wouldn't if Noelle and company had done any damned research on Female Heads of State or Royals who took on the crown when they were still kids.
Jean Gentry I understand, I just thought I’d point out that she’s still learning, I mean I wouldn’t be able to rule a kingdom at 11. But I do agree that she is in a position in which she is suppose to be more mindful of what she says. I feel like it would of been nice to see how her parents ruled to see I that had an influence on how she treated Mikah, i mean it be nice to see all the parents and how they ruled to see if that had an influence on the Princesses personality and how they ruled. It could answer questions about how they act and react to things, or even Entrapta’s hair ( Hopefully I spelled that right). All in all I think Frosta is being kinda of rude but not to the point of “ our heroes everybody” and does need to realize that for most part she is treated like an adult but can’t expect to always be, and we should of see the parents of the princesses for more insight on how they act. This was long, sorry for ranting. I really enjoy talking about opinions about shows and how they could be better.
oh man it's such a shame they didn't have a princess who specializes in non-lethal, even non-harmful, takedowns OH WAIT! this could have been Netossas time to shine and instead she gets critically injured by a shove. I'm sure all the lesbians out there love watching one of their reps get sidelined so pathetically.
Catra: "Everyone hates me!" Me: "No they don't. I don't know WHY they don't--it would literally make all the sense in the universe if they DID hate you--but for some really weird and irksome reason they don't."
Catra: "Shouldn't they hate me for blowing up Time and Space?!" No Catra, I am the one who hates you for blowing up Time and Space. Bow hates you for throwing him off a Cliff.
@@johannesseyfried7933 To be fair, hating someone for throwing you off a cliff makes sense. The fact that that's the ONLY thing you hate them for out of a list that includes acts that are WAY worse than that does not.
Catra’s terrible redemption arc got me thinking about Shayera Hol’s (Justice League Hawkgirl) which was done better in comparison, when she turned out to be spying on the JL for her home planet until she went against them to save the humans. Even though Shayera did something heroic, the show still recognised that she had betrayed her team and The Earth, and it took a while for everyone to trust her again, and even still, her relationships with others were never the same again. But at least Shayera actually earned her redemption by reflecting on her mistakes, dealing with her consequences, and protecting civilians and her friends time and time again. Her strength, courage, and compassion made her a true hero.
They're trying to give Spinnerella and Netossa more focus in the second half of the final season, but the fact that they were hardly given any prior to this makes whatever development they'll get feel unearned
@@luma4902 because that wasn't their role in the story. they were literally there for decoration. to sit there an appear briefly so that they can go "LOOK GAY PEOPLE!" and then push them back. See, people, this is what happens when instead of constructing a plotline you just throw darts at a board blindly and see which character you ought to give love to.
That’s probably the most perfect metaphor for this show, a dartboard, they take story elements, characters, plot lines, and events from other much better stories stick them on a board and start throwing without regard for what actually works/fits
You know this episode really got me thinking the whole “there mind controlled people we can’t hurt them” doesn’t really make sense like you don’t have to kill them just KO them if it came down to a punch to the face or being a mind slave I’d think they’d understand. And yes I get the idea it may not be mentally easy to hurt a loved one but here’s the thing, this group is made up of entirely of people who can fight without doing harm, frosta has ice/freezing powers, spinnerella can do wind blasts, Micah is able to do glue spells and netossa has nets this fight should have been one and done
Truthfully, they shouldn’t even need to use magic or punch them. They could sweep their legs judo style and run. Considering their status they should know how to do that
Groomsman yeah but no, why, because they need the story to get to the point where the hero’s are at the disadvantage and outmatched instead of I don’t know actually setting up the story to that point through thought out planning and writing
Valen Arts Animation yes literally that right there and even if they did cause harm again either mild pain or mindless slave for a Genocidal mad man I think you can deal with some pain
@@ValenArtsAnimation eh realistically getting frozen is almost as bad as being lit on fire. frostbite would set in, serious freezer burn and if you don't get that thawed fast there's a high chance you would lose that limb. most fantasy shows, especially those for kids tend to ignore this but having a part of your self frozen would be really, really, bad.
Catra never gonna face the consequences of her actions? Sounds like the main characters of RWBY. Team RWBY and JNRP never get in trouble by the authorities
@@Saltedroastedcaramel I would say that She-ra has more in common with Steven Universe when it comes to issues in writing and world building. As much as those two a very left wing focus, they atleast didn't spend an entire SEASON being an allegory for the 2016 american election and do jack shit with it and switch the whole focus by the third last episode.
@@fandude666 That is true, however according to an article once, Noelle liked the Avatar and I doubt she was anywhere near Steven Universe. Any close connection with the latter is either an accident or just part of the whole action slice of life thing.
I really wish they actually failed to save Catra, there is no real way for Catra to have or even deserve a happy ending at this point. The only conceivable way for her to be redeemed is self sacrifice for the greater good. Unfortunately Noel Stevenson really wants the ship to happen and will make so many writing sins just to make it happen. Catra destroying the world was the point of no return. Any decent Writer would tell you that at this point, pursuing the ship is pointless and would be better to give it up.
This Imagine they fail and that guilt especially realizing it gets harder to remove afterwards meaning their best chance diminishes right after they left, would've been good character conflict, can't have that in this show
I believe that Netflix's She-Ra should actually be called "Wrong She-Ra" since pretty much everything it did (aside from looking pleasing the eye at times) was not only wrong but stupid wrong. At least that way it also implies that the original is the right one overall.
It seems like that B-plot could have been trimmed down considerably. It would have been nice for Catra and Entrapta to spend more time together since Catra's love of power and Entrapta's love of science both got in the way of their personal relationships and since Entrapta has mostly gotten past that (depending on the needs of the plot) she could have helped Catra start to work past it too. I don't think they can put Catra on trial since Brightmoon's lack of any prison facilities makes me think Etheria doesn't have a working criminal justice system.
This show coulda been better tbh, they leave certain stuff underdeveloped that would make the show more interesting and great cause it’s not a bad show the writers just make weird choices
@@Surgehero5136 Eh, bad is kind of a relative term when it comes to entertainment. Thinking about this series I'm reminded about Digibro's videos on The Asterisk War and how he said that probably existed because it was the job of the people creating it to make animation rather than them being passionate about producing a quality piece of media.
20:15 ok just have to point out how much I HATE this scene in particular, it’s a blatant example of trying to half assedly emotionally tug at the audience, it’s them trying to do the standard main cast having a big intimate dinner/party with a lot of lively conversation to show how close they’ve all become & deep the friendships they’ve made but that only works if there’s actually a big group of people not just 6 with 3 actual friends it has to be a big group because if not then the multiple conversations sound annoying/ then talking over each other, and that’s what happens. Also there not even really having a conversation about anything there faking one listen to what they say and it’s just Ad-libbed gibberish. It is just such a blatant attempt to try and make you feel for these characters and those people just eat it up
I'm gonna keep repeating this: The whole point of this show, all 52 episodes of chopped up two seasons is to get Adora to hook up with a sexual predator. Everything the show does is to get to that point. Nothing else matters.
imagine if Catra was a guy... nobody would give this ship a pass! But Adora can consider herself lucky to not be a guy. because women preying on the male gender is often even seen as "sexy".

J, of course, Catra isn't going face any trial or consequences cuz she got so much of that stupid plot armor that she can just pretty much bypass any freaking system in the ENTIRE UNIVERSE like a f****** boss.
Could you IMAGINE this version of Catra being on trial? Every time the prosecutor brings up a charge and some damning evidence and a rousing speech, Catra just starts laughing and dismisses all of the charges as jokes and "pathetic."
This episode and this season in general, made me realize how much better Zutara is. I do not like Zutara as a ship. I think you'd have to more of the story dedicated to Zuko and Katara working on their relationship to form a healthy romance. However, I would rather have a Zutara be endgame then Catra and Adora. I couldn't imagine Zuko just constantly going back and forth between angrily pushing Katara away and then randomly cling to her when he thinks she'll leave. It would be weird and unhealthy. Just like it is in this show.
Well here’s the thing that works much better because zuko was never actively focused on trying to make katara hurt or complained that she abandoned him even though adora actively tried to get catra to join her side, she was just that girl traveling with his target the avatar he didn’t technically have any major relationship with her prior to switching sides And yet he was still willing to actively help her track down the man who killed her mother even though he didn’t have to, far better than “I’m gonna be a smug dick to you even though you saved me from being a mindless slave you bitch” catra
Is it bad that even after I've practically abandoned the shipping community while telling them to go fuck themselves for going downhill that I *still* wholeheartedly agree that Zutara is an arguably more realistic and healthy romance? Better than "Catradora".
Donut Bevil yeah no if you think some characters could make a cute couple that’s fine it becomes a problem when people start thinking they are 100% right about it & they deserve to have this happen or they couldn’t give two shits for the actual story only the couples that’s when it becomes a problem
It's kinda like with The Owl House. So many People are focused on Luz x Amity. While I think it's a cute Ship, and MUCH better than Catradora, I don't want it to take over the Story.

I agree that The Owl House's Luz x Amity is cute, and has the potential to take both their characters to new heights, but I agree it shouldn't be the main focus. And many other fans of the ship agree with us, might I add.
Of course Catra isn't gonna face trial. There are fanfics all over the net (including UA-cam) where Darth Vader survives the events of Return of the Jedi but still faces trial. Even he agreed that he should, because even though he returned to the Light Side, he is still responsible for war crimes and mass murder of millions across the Galaxy during Palpatine's reign. It made sense! But Noelle Stevenson doesn't do sense.
@Johannes Seyfried Noelle Stevenson: I actually intended for this show to be like “Alice in Wonderland and Through the looking Glass” Just a string of: nonsensical, loosely related events that people still like, because they’re fun. Noelle Stevenson: but unfortunately I lack the things that made those books successful: creativity, effort, not expecting the work to be a masterpiece, and having fun with piece.
here is the difference: these hobby-writers seem to have passion about what they're doing, compared to the writers of this show. btw. this would legit be a nice plot for a Lego Star Wars Brickfilm tbh.
This was the episode where I knew the series was going to completely fall apart in the final stretch. The minute Adora said "I never hated you!" I responded by laughing and saying "Ohhh nooooooo....." Such a disappointing series. Made even worse by the fact that there is legitimately good stuff in it.
Lmaoo, that was a straight lie from Adora, too. I vividly remember this, in the last few minutes of that episode where Catra almost merked the universe, Adora did some shit and destroyed a machine stopping her. As Catra was beginning to flee, she looked back at Adora to see her glaring at her ass clearly pissed off. Yeah no, that was hate. Also another moment that the show forgot that was clearly an important thing...

Picking at the character designs once again, what is with those bandaid looking things on the characters’ noses?! It’s so stupid looking, annoying to look at, and only a few characters have it sometimes. Swiftwind is also so poorly designed. Once again, the studio that brought the animation of Spirit and other horses in other movies and show let that ‘thing‘ make it to post! Did no one care enough to help them design a decent looking horse?! Though I do kinda feel bad that he’s trying to connect with Adora/She-Ra and isn’t given the same consideration. Sort of like a pet left whose owner left without making sure the could handle the separation. For the story, Catra is definitely forgiven toooo early and easily. Gosh, why couldn’t they have let the stupid ship sink and burn like they do to Seahawk’s in this show? It’s ruined plot points, characters, good story telling, and encourages toxic relationships. Only reason any likes it is for Rule 34.
That bandage thing is because they can't shade so they opt to go the Tumblr route and go for the nose blush. Because why put actual effort into stuff you do?
"The Ship is having trouble, and they lost control of it." Great way to sum up the entire series since if they didn't somehow make Catra and Adora being a couple at the end, the horde would have devoured them- and how Catra has acted and is still acting, it REALLY comes off as forced and rushed just to save Stevenson's skin. From now on, Adora's new title should- She-ra: Princess of Stockholm. because, jeez! After everything she's done, she just expects Catra to be good. (Not till the final episode, anyways), but honestly. Catra could murder her friends in front of her, and the show would have Adora falling into Catra arms begging for forgiveness! If Catra actually faced trial I'd take everything that I've ever said, but I got a strong sense of foresight telling me that she doesn't and everyone acts like she she's just a victim of circumstance- like she wasn't a treacherous, conniving, manipulative monster hellbent on her own selfish desires that if she can't obtain, she'd rather destroy the entire universe out of petty spite who up to this two episode 2 of this season was even going to try and take control over the entire horde, until Horde Prime didn't let her.
Explain to me how it's "fun" to be under attack. It would be nice to see Catra face payback for her actions but why do that when we can focus on Shipping instead? And Yeah you think the Princess Alliance would be better at defending themselves.
I mean as a Christian, I should be open to characters getting redeemed. But this Cattra committed so many atrocities. Plus she’s narcissistic, abrasive, psychopathic, possessive, and unapologetically cruel.
The chipped normal people taking out the princesses w/o it being established at all that they have enhanced strength gave me the biggest eye-roll. Frosta is seriously my least favorite character. She has her own kingdom - why isn't she protecting her people? At no point do any of them go back to their own places so Frosta is not acting like a leader for abandoning those counting on her. I seriously don't like her. I totally believe Entrapta forgives Catra easily. Keep Up The Good Work~!
Entrapta:"Yeah who hasn't tried to or accidentally killed someone. God knows my hands aren't clean, which is also why I wear gloves." Bow:"That does explain why there's only like three people in her whole kingdom." Back on Etheria The kitchen staff of Dryl raise their glasses Green:"For our fallen brothers and sisters." Pink:"And those lost souls trapped in the basement maze, never to see sunlight again." Blue:"May the time of the hair witch come to an end, for both her and that demon she lays with." Kitchen staff toast and chug it all down Pink:"Do you think she's actually dead?" Blue:"I hope so." In Space, Entrapta sneezes Wrong Hordak:"Are you infected?" Entrapta:"No, someone is probably just thinking about me."
@@unigenius Well the reason behind that was everyone left. Entrapta owns a whole kingdom but I wouldn't put it past the trap doors and maze that she's responsible for her own subjects missing. Guess that's what she has in common with Hordak too, they both have impressive body counts.
@@unigenius Since when are random Tourists part of a Country? In Mermista's Defense, there ARE actually People in her Kingdom. They just always have to flee because either their Defenses are failing during War and their Princess is to lazy to fix them, or they are getting invaded, while their Princess hangs around in Bright Moon.... Am I the only one who finds it weird how often they hang around Angella's Castle? Don't these Girls have People to rule over?!?
"They wanted to redeem Catra from the beginning" That is some heavy optimism right there, As far as I am concerned Catra's redemption is nothing but pandering to twitter and tumblr shippers.
I really don't like the idea of her being accepted by them so easily. Maybe if the writers tried redeeming her earlier, I would be okay with it. But after all she's done it just doesn't make much sense to me. I think it would be better if they just, made her die in Hord Prime's ship. Because she still would have had somewhat of a redemption, but she wouldn't have been accepted by the others. Do you understand what I'm saying? I find it difficult to express myself properly through text.
Exactly. Despite being an antagonist, Avatar gave us many moments showing that Zuko truly wasn't a bad person at heart, despite the abuse he went through. Catra doesn't get any of that. She was just nasty all the time and never had any moment in the 1st 4 seasons showing her as a nice person deep down.
Azula also didn't nearly blow up the world. but when she abused her friends she never got a redemption despite the series pointing that she was groomed to be a child soldier. (Though last I heard the comics were reaching her character arc for events after the series.)
@@phantom-ri2tg She was just the one who suggested to her megalomaniac dad.....who then did it and when she couldn't do it with him she got pissy about it. And then tried to burn the face off Zuko and Katara
When the planet is being invaded and possibly burned to the ground, out dramatic heroes of the resistance focus on the most important operation to their survival. A party, imagine if instead of the Horde it was the Empire from Starwars or heaven forbid Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans or any other dangerous Sci Fi army in space. Etheria would be royally screwed.
Show's basically my little pony written by people that don't know how to write. She-ra and the princesses of friendship, watch us forgive everyone despite not having earned redemption in any way because... friendship?
I miss 80s Swiftwind. Edit-Nettosa's weapons are nets, she should be able to bind people without hurting them. Also this whole "Mind control population" was done a 1000 times better (And creepier) in Dark Crystal.
The creators of the show don't really care about the rest of the story, any sort of character arcs for any of the characters, or the world they created for the story either. They don't care what lessons about herself or others Adora (or the audience) learns or whether or not any of the story actually hangs together. As long as Catra and Adora kiss on screen by the end of the last episode, they will have considered their series a RESOUNDING SUCCESS. She-ra is now an LGBTQ icon. And that was the entire point of the series. That the whole thing is pale sort-of gender-bent fan-fiction of Avatar the Last Airbender in which Nichole Stevenson gets to ship her sort-of gender-bent Ang wannabe with her gender-bent Zuko wannabe, or that nobody will remember the show in a year (while the original is still remembered after 35 years) doesn't matter to Nicholle Stevenson or her crew. Now, if any future iteration of She-ra isn't a lesbian or "lesbian enough", there will be twitter riots (and these days, maybe even actual riots) and people WILL be canceled. There could be an interesting story here. You've got some good basics. There's almost a good world - that they never really bother building, there's almost good characters - that they never really develop, and almost a good story set-up that a competent writer could have actually made and epic story out of. I even like the idea of turning the Horde into a borg-wannabe hive mind (though it eliminates the fun of all the original horde's various -toys- characters). But what I've seen watching this show is that the "characters" (half of whom aren't even one-dimensional) and the "plot" are incidental. The POINT through the first four "seasons" were the lame jokes: any plot or character moment was subverted to throw in a lame joke, and in the fifth season the POINT is to create an excuse to eventually have Adora and Catra kiss (and taking digs at Christianity).
TBH Twitter and the alphabet community can riot all it wants but I don't think the toys made much, especially thanks to the UGLY character designs. Plus I think the OG MOTU toys does better than Nu-Ra. Please anyone correct me if I'm wrong. This She-Ra could be it's own universe which I hope is what happens. Does that crowd ever support there artist through money?
@@RollingDodge They do to a certain extent. Many of the artists in this crowd originally found success in webcomics, and many of those are as woke as it gets. They pulled in enough money selling adds or getting patreon supporters they could quit their day jobs (you know, barista-ing at their local coffee shop). Indeed, I think they were able to sell Marvel on going woke by citing the success of woke webcomics among the 20-something female audience Marvel had been trying to woo ever since the 90s when manga began surpassing comics in sales. But they don't care about supporting their artists through money (especially in "nerdy" media they don't care about in the first place); they care about controlling culture. Every aspect of culture must be made into a platform to preach the Gospel of Woke or it must be cancelled. If it goes broke because it went woke, then, at least, it's not out there as a bastion of outmoded ideas like heroism, masculinity or femininity, or good writing, or something.
@@liljenborg2517 yes, we have too many Noelle Stevenson's, Dana Schwartz's, Heather Antos's, Kelly Thompson, ... in the industries. Then some of them and others gatekeep, use whisper networks, which is like running smear campaigns to keep out talent. Companies or industries should use meritocracy for things. The animation, comics, video games, etc still get things wrong about women, and men and I recommend maybe watching #LianaK. I know what you mean, about companies trying to appeal to females. They think ruining characters like She-Ra, Ms/Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, etc, are gonna bring in the females while they turn away male fans. Sorry, but I don't think that Noelle Stevenson was hired through meritocracy.
@Tamia Gayle, yeah if your female is masculine, you might as well make a male character. It's the same if your make your all your characters that's male effeminate, might as well make a female. The way not Hordak is an example of what I'm talking about.
This show will probably be remembered in the same way how the DMC reboot will be remembered: in the next proper installment/reboot, the better aspects of it will be used to create a better product while not actively dissing on those who actually liked the show.
Funny fact: these "vaguely religious" things Horde Prime keeps saying were, according with Noelle herself, a way to create some connection between the Horde and the archetype of some religious cults because, hey, it wouldn't be a LGBT show if it hadn't religious folks as villains. I mean, same thing with TLOU 2. And honestly: this is extremely cliché and a bit lazy, but it could work if well done. But of course, it's about Noelle Stevenson we're talking about.
"This episode has quite a few subplots, to the point where it's a little bit all over the place" *Every episode of Netflix's She-ra summed up in one sentence.*
You know, it's funny that mlp:fim most common complaint was that villains were forgiven too quickly. It feels like this was much quicker, and not as thought out. I at least bought when starlight became good.
It would have been better if it was presented as a way to keep everyone's morale up, but they still treated the war seriously when they're not playing around.
the way Catra only seems willing to become "good" to keep Adora around reminds me of how people think it's cute when a dog resource guards a child and then get surprised when the dog attacks them
So. How long do you think it will take for the people of Bright Moon to be enraged and rebel, since their taxes are spent on parties and sleepovers, but not on the needs of the Kingdom and the people (in particular, on reconstruction after the war)?
18:15 = "I'm still not buying this." I genuinely laughed out loud. 😄 The way the ladies talked about the Alliance not using their powers reminded me of the Teen Titans Go movie. No matter the crazy situation, Raven would just summon a portal and the heroes escaped. I guess the writers of She-Ra could learn a few things from that show. 🤷
To prevent a story from being broken due to a character's ability, writers write some force to prevent them. I think that was lost some time ago. Now characters are idiots
Honestly, even TTG can be more epic than this. When Ravens from across the Multiverse all fused into one and battled the two Trigons....that was the most BADASS Thing Teen Titans Go ever did! 😎 "Who....are you?!?" Raven: " *We are The Unkindness* "
Plot twist: 2020 sucks because we got transported into hell world She-ra, and once it's over we'll be free from the horrible writing that's been controlling this year.
Catra's rushed redemption for the sake of shipping just makes me think of better done redemption stories elsewhere. There's of course Zuko, but others like Digimon characters like Ken and Impmon, TT 2003 Terra, DCAU Hawkgirl, MLP: FiM Sunset Shimmer, various examples from Transformers, etc. SU even did a good job with Peridot even though it dropped the bill with others. Even if some of those characters crossed lines there was still some kind of fallout, self-reflection, and eventually culminating into something meaningful like either turning around their lives completely and/or a sacrifice of some sort. Here we acknowledge Catra feels bad about what she did but she doesn't really suffer an fallout or punishment. Instead, she is easily forgiven by everyone including the girl whose mother she indirectly killed and eventually gets her crush who she treated like crap the whole show to be her girlfriend by the end of the series.
I don't know about Peridot, my friend; her arc was awful as well. Not as bad as Catra, but still awful in its own right. In the words of Starship Troopers, "Would you like to know more?"
This show reallllly needs a reboot, maybe one with the OG cast and her brother.. Thankfully it might be soon or next year since Mattel seems to dislike this show,, they're even having a con, that shows he man and she ra called power con, it's online.
Wait did I miss something? Why is the wrong Hordak also not a means to track their ship? Like yeah the chip but shouldn't that Hordak also be how they continue to hunt them down? Did I miss a scene where they somehow made it possible he's not a method either?
This was my thought as well when I was watching the episode. Before the reveal on how the ship crew was being followed was shown, I honestly thought he was the one bringing the tracking attackers to them.
Vyse .Vee maybe Prime can’t track him because he can’t really control him anymore?? Idk the show doesn’t explain shit and when it does, it’s incredibly lazily done.

So I was looking at the merch to see if the show is doing well here's what I found Toys: season 1 shera, bow, glimmer, catra, scorpia, swiftwind Toy quality: the toys were made of low quality unused DC hero girls and monster high doll parts instead of original parts. Books: I found 2, one was a low effort season 1 comic book and a children's book which apparently has better wrighting than the show. Funco pop: From what I've asked people online said they could only find shera and maybe catra though those were probably orginal series.
If any one wants to know merch has always been a blessing and a curse for series. Allot of merch indicates to the higher ups the show is doing great. Little bit of merch tells the higher ups the show failed. This is why we lose so many good series. Shera pop is the latter. Ps. The movie is not coming shera pop fans.
@Tamia Gayle I forgot to add that when a show is doing great they create parts with higher quality because they can make the money back and then some. When a show is not doing so well they use old unused parts to save money because the higher ups know the show can't make back the money used for the better quality parts. To add insult to injuries the shera franchise is supposed to be a merchandise juggernaut.
I really really really wish they had included Horde Prime from the beginning. He’s an excellent villain and the whole ‘hive mind’ and cult vision they had for him would have benefited the endgame vision they had for the characters. Adora could have joined the Princesses and Catra could have joined Horde Prime from like the end of season one and given great parallels for each other. It also would’ve given a big bad to hate from the beginning, and taken a lot of the irredeemable qualities that Catra possess and push them onto Prime. She could still be a victim and villain and thus seem more redeemable. I understand they were trying to say that sometimes redemption/healing isn’t always pretty, and often people who suffer abuse can go down that same path. But they shouldn’t say that abusers can just say sorry and be with the people they hurt because they are the same age. 🤷🏽♀️The ship had potential, but they just kept beating the dead horse with Catra and made it too toxic to really support even though I think the general idea is a good one.

If I didn't like this show, this wouldn't bother me. But the fact that I've almost watched the entire show, and enjoy most of it. This is just a horrible ship, come on.
Angela will eventually starve to death, but maybe that dimension works differently from ours, like in Ant-Man, when Scott got stuck in that realm, it's passed a few hours, however, years had passed in the real world. Could this have happened to Angela as well?
No I’m betting on something worse Like literally in the show jojo’s bizarre adventure one of the villains, who is also a god like being, is defeated by getting shot into the void of space and the shear isolation and emptiness drove him brain dead like they literally say “after years of failed attempts to try and save himself he was driven mad and eventually he stopped thinking” that is the hell she was sent to but let’s just give catra a super happy love love ending
I didn't even think of that! Yeah, Angella could very likely starve. But then again....when did anyone who was trapped in a different Dimension ever need to eat?
And if she can't die from starvation, there's still the Madness of Solitude. Basically, whatever happens, Angella will be annihilated (and I mean it, either physically or mentally) after a long, unending agony. They should have just directly killed her if they didn't want her back.
@@francescosacca6674 It really depends. How long can a Person survive in solitary Confinement without going insane? Noelle said that this Story takes Place over the Span of three Years.
Have you guys watched Ben 10 Alien Force? This is just like Professor Paradox backstory, but I think it's better as it turned out in the show, because this way we can feel how dangers a war really is. As Mj pointed out , no one actually dies, just in flashbacks.
Wouldn't it have been interesting if Frosta and Micah bonded over their lost Loved Ones that they never actually knew? Micah saw his Daughter the last Time when she was a Baby, and I doubt Frosta even remembers her Parents.....but they could tell Stories about them. Frosta worked with Glimmer, and Micah must have known the Royals of the Snow Kingdom if they were a part of the Rebellion! And if you still need that Mind controlled Villagers-Plot to happen, just send Nettossa and Spinnerella.
The B plot of this episode it's so weird, like in paper it should work, but the way they executed it, it's so off and uninteresting, maybe it's cos the characters have little to no relevance or good characterization, Net and Spin could be interesting separate but they always restricted them to be only a couple and not individuals, Micah it's the most interesting one but they have him in this weird place where it's hard to take him seriously, it doesn't really feel like he was this ruler and expert magician before.
What absolutely makes it worse is how they get beaten by moth people who oh I don’t know...have ZERO powers at all! Like-I I don’t understand how this even got in this show- or how this show is praised for having “good” writing when we have shit like this-- it’s like they only looked at the writing once and said “yep that’s good!” Jshdgdnsmshshss god this shit pisses me off
15:05 - 15:17 does anyone remember that episode of the powerpuff girls where him brainwashes the people of townsville and the people of townsville attack the girls and the girls didnt want to hit the citizens but they had no choice to beat them up, yeah that was done better in PPG than in She -ra. anyway this show can be sum up by this: toxic shipping and waste of time
Well, Scorpia was easy because she was never shown as Evil, just on the wrong side. All they had to do was move her to the Best Friends Squad. They kept the door open for Entrapta to turn good because she started out with the Princess Alliance, and like Scorpia, was Evil because of the side she was on.
I hate how much the "heroes" deviate from their tasks in favor of personal leisure. They're always goofing off rather than doing the right thing and they say it's more serious than the original?? There was a literal episode about book burning!
Sadly Every criticism About this show never gets fixed or even addressed so the flaws of S1 are still very prevalent up to the Finale. @@wizardofarts1276 I honestly expected the Clone to see through the Lie and betray them by the End of the Episode. Why would Horde Prime send Spaceships to attack his own "Friends"? Not even a braindead Clone could be THIS stupid! Looks like I overestimated him.
I want to compare argument made for and against this show by comparing them to hoops in a circus. Arguments against: Their hoop is the size of America super easy to get through Shera pop fans: The hoop is the size of a cheerio and their plan is to throw a rock to distract the crowd so they can get to the other side with out any noticing. But in execution they throw a pepple and scream "I'M GAY,I'M GAY,I'M GAY" at the top of their lungs. Ps. Bigger the hoop better the argument and how easy it is to make
@Tamia Gayle what I'm trying to say is hoop size represents credibility when arguing for or against the show. Bigger the hoop better the argument. The rock is supposed be how they try to chang the argument with out any one noticing when their losing an argument.
Kinda makes me think of Miraculous Ladybug, where we have a redemption arc (Chloè's) which wasn't really in the writers' intentions, and yet it was turning out pretty good... here we have a redemption arc that was maybe TOO much wished for by the writers, with the result it turned out too rushed.
This whole season makes me want to scream! I wish I had never even watched this show, I have lost so many brain cells from it. I can’t understand why people ship these two, Catra is EXACTLY like Shadow Weaver and Hordak. If they don’t get a redemption (I’m not saying they deserve one because they absolutely don’t.) then Catra shouldn’t either. This ship is absolutely horrible and such a bad influence on kids. This ship is the definition of toxic relationships. I’m so disappointed.
I don't know if you watched the end, but holy shit. Redemptions do happen and the way they are done are maddening. Imma say this, Shadow Weaver was done the best, but that's not saying much...
The ending made me hate the show, and it gives me nightmares. Like, wtf bruh? Not even Naruto went that stupid. Orochimaru and Sasuke were (barely) held accountable for their crimes.
@@Dave102693 orochimaru was never held accountable. She doesn’t even go to jail. He gets to stay in his lab doing work with yamamto watching him and kabuto gets to run an orphanage lmao.
Theory: If you play Red Dead Redemption 2 and choose low honor all the time, deciding to help John get to his family in the end is still a better redemption arc than Catra. Might just be my impression, but I don't think that idea comes out of nowhere...
Honestly the whole scene at the village was just The stupidest thing I ever seen. Because they have like all the options in the world to stop them and they don’t use a single one of them outside the ice. also how the hell do they break through ice with there bare hands, it be one thing they had weapons or some sorcerers but they don’t use or these are regular civilians.
You know what I think is entrapta forgiving Catra is a good step and I think she does feel guilty about all the horrible things she's done but like I said before I think all this could have been avoided if catheter just try to talk about her problems instead of lashing out
So I don't watch the show and I don't plan to, I just watch your reviews of the show. I'm wondering was swift wind viewing the party as a reward for saving the people or was he viewing it as an inevitability due to the nature of the people they were supposed to be saving?
Frosta has always been my least favourite member of the Princess Alliance. I understand her wanting to be treated with respect given her title, but her actions have done little to earn said respect, especially when she is so hostile to a fellow ruler who is simply trying to help her.
@@bbgunz1705 Are you suggesting screentime be taken away from Catra's "redemption" so that other non-shipper characters can be fleshed out? Not in Noel Stevenson's show.

I understand that Catra's lashing out at her allies is an expression of the guilt, anger, and hatred she feels towards herself, but that doesn't give her the right to project her angst onto others or to emotionally abuse Adora. Catradora isn't a friends to lovers romance, it's a cautionary tale.

Let me help you, just like someone once did for me."
I might've misquoted a little, but it's still really impactful because she EARNED the respect and love from others.
BB Gunz170 plus she never once tried killing her “crush” (or whatever the fuck Adora is to Catra WHILE she says “I love you Adora, I always have!)

Don't you just love redemption arcs that weren't earned for unlikable characters? That's good storytelling.
Especially when those characters are psychopathic and toxic
Catra was actually the most like-able for me, but then again she did cross the line multiple times. She just reminds me of my cat Luna, she’s the one in my profile picture that looks like she’s about to kill some one, Luna’s mean at times about can be a sweet heart. Catra isn’t really sweet though. This was way too long, sorry for wasting your time.
I'm getting Diamond flashbacks.
Well, Noelle got paid, at least that is something...
unlike shows like Dragonball Z and Beast Wars who made villains actually struggle with their morality
"...but the characters in the show don't hate her[Catra]." ...AFTER EVERYTHING SHE'S DONE IN THE SHOW UP TO MEETING HORDE PRIME?! ARE THEY NUTS?! Even the Catra from the original show would be disgusted with her!
But lesbians. :3
That’s it, that’s all the justification they can muster. -_-
Maybe if she didn't pull the switch and season 3 she would be redeemable. But after all she's done it just doesn't make sense to me.
When I'm not annoyed by the show's "humor" I'm simply _baffled_ by it. _Why_ is this considered funny to whoever thinks so? Is it a subcultural thing? A personal thing? What kids these days are into?
The humour is nothing but a waste of thought in this show. Every time I even hear these characters speak I just loose brain cells.
This isn't humor for kids. This is humor for adults who so badly want to feel like they're still Instagram teens.
This is the crap "woman-children" think is funny. It's fanfic tier shit that should have stayed on watpad and not put on netflix.

Agreed. It strained her relationship with John, and Wonder Woman held an understandable grudge for a good time afterward.

I really wish they actually failed to save Catra, there is no real way for Catra to have or even deserve a happy ending at this point. Unfortunately Noel Stevenson really wants the ship to happen and will make so many writing sins just to make it happen. Catra destroying the world was the point of no return. Any decent Writer would tell you that at this point, pursuing the ship is pointless and would be better to give it up.

Imagine they fail and that guilt especially realizing it gets harder to remove afterwards meaning their best chance diminishes right after they left, would've been good character conflict, can't have that in this show
I believe that Netflix's She-Ra should actually be called "Wrong She-Ra" since pretty much everything it did (aside from looking pleasing the eye at times) was not only wrong but stupid wrong.

Well here’s the thing that works much better because zuko was never actively focused on trying to make katara hurt or complained that she abandoned him even though adora actively tried to get catra to join her side, she was just that girl traveling with his target the avatar he didn’t technically have any major relationship with her prior to switching sides
And yet he was still willing to actively help her track down the man who killed her mother even though he didn’t have to, far better than “I’m gonna be a smug dick to you even though you saved me from being a mindless slave you bitch” catra
Is it bad that even after I've practically abandoned the shipping community while telling them to go fuck themselves for going downhill that I *still* wholeheartedly agree that Zutara is an arguably more realistic and healthy romance?

"They wanted to redeem Catra from the beginning"
That is some heavy optimism right there, As far as I am concerned Catra's redemption is nothing but pandering to twitter and tumblr shippers.
A redemption arc makes sense to me. But it doesn't make sense how she's just accepted by the princess alliance
I still get the feeling that this story is being plotted as a Mad Libs game.
Maybe they think she's Zuko but even Zuko didn't nearly blew up the world

Noelle has stated that she doesn't know how to write a fight scene or Redemption arc only lesbian stuff
Sounds about right.
Did she say that on Twitter?
proof?

I know what you mean, about companies trying to appeal to females. They think ruining characters like She-Ra, Ms/Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, Squirrel Girl, etc, are gonna bring in the females while they turn away male fans.

The way the ladies talked about the Alliance not using their powers reminded me of the Teen Titans Go movie.

There's like, maybe 5 people in total that I don't want dead. The rest can just go to hoard prime for all I care.

So I was looking at the merch to see if the show is doing well here's what I found
Toys: season 1 shera,bow,glimmer,catra,scorpia,swiftwind
Toy quality: the toys were made of low quality unused DC hero girls and monster high doll parts instead of original parts.

Like literally in the show jojo’s bizarre adventure one of the villains, who is also a god like being, is defeated by getting shot into the void of space and the shear isolation and emptiness drove him brain dead like they literally say “after years of failed attempts to try and save himself he was driven mad and eventually he stopped thinking” that is the hell she was sent to but let’s just give catra a super happy love love ending

Well, Scorpia was easy because she was never shown as Evil, just on the wrong side. All they had to do was move her to the Best Friends Squad.
