New 2024 5th Gen owner here. The general concern I have about the 2025 6th Gen is engine longevity. Is the new 6th Gen engine going to go the distance that the 5th Gen has a proven track record for? Is this new engine going to last 300k, 500k plus miles without having significant maintenance issues as long as you keep the oil changed and preventive maintenance up to date on it? The answer is to be determined by what 6th gen buyers experience. For the exorbitant price tag the 6th Gen is going to have, is the juice really going to be worth the squeeze? I don’t want to be the guinea pig to find out so I’m going to let someone else buy it first and see what they experience.
New colors are good. 4cyl engine - NO THNAKS, not for $65+k These engine are made in the same factory as the Tundra engine that are blowing up. Toyota is falling from grace. I don’t trust the engine. In three years we could be in a Tundra situation.
Not likely with 4Runner considering the Tacoma and Land Cruiser are using the same engine now. You better believe they are checking the 4 cylinder production now to make sure they stop any similar issues to the 6 cylinder from happening.
We know what is happening with new gen tundra turbo engine and the latest recall. So, people who were skeptical about the turbo charge engine were totally right. So I won't fall the new, shiny look of this new 4runner. Toyota can keep it. We ain't buying it, bro.

The new 4Runner is so over engineer and what we learned from over engineering from BMW & Mercedes it crashed and burns. The electronic 4wd is buggy it sometimes won't even engage 4wd. Drive shaft breaking. Engine is over stressed when towing, that engine gets hot AF just towing 3,000 lb that's absolutely pathetic. The V6 can tow 6000 lb without getting hot AF.
I remember V8 fans didn’t like the V6 but a 4cylinder in this size is ridiculous at this point on a truck. i can feel feel the jerky movement trying to move this heavy thing from here😂
Will see how long will this 2.4L turbo/ hybrid last. More complications more chances for things to go wrong. Lease should be OK own for many years maybe not, as you will be stu k with the high bills to cover for repairs. Recently the 3.5L turbo in Tundra has major engine failure with metal parts in the engine and main engine bearings damages.
Hello Jeff, from Ouray, Colorado! Thank you very much for this orientation run down of the pending 2025 4Runners! We have a 2019 4Runner Off Road. Since it is our traveling vehicle, we are considering updating it within the year. I really really like the adaptive cruise feature (which we don't have currently). And, since we live in a backcountry mecca with all of the old mining roads to explore, we'd also prefer it to continue to have a bit more off road features vice the gucci trims. We don't off road on super technical trails; so I don't foresee a need for the TRD Pro. Colors-- hmmmm--this is technically, my wife's vehicle. So, she gets to pick the color. My guess is that green ish color is what she may favor. Then again, we have a red vw bug and a red F350 too; she may prefer a louder color such as that. Thank you for what you do! PS. Yes....I am liking the new overall appearance. THANK GOD it isn't like the new Chevy trucks transition to this massive front grill/in your face/with very non standard headlights type look. I am sure many many folks will chime in about the transition from 6 cylinder to 4 cylinder and such. I'm not a big engine tech guy, so I am generally indifferent. I definitely did not get a 4Runner to win 0-60 races. We just want it to get us there; which includes traversing national forest roads and old mining roads here in Colorado. Since this would be somewhat our retirement vehicle, I feel like we would steer away from the hybrid model as I just don't want to hassle with a mega battery after I've quit working.
That’s super nice of you to say that Dan. Yes that is how creators get paid thru UA-cam - when people watch the ads. But I try to not mention that too much haha :)

Click bait. Good ploy Jeff! I should have known that you would never have anything negative to say about Toyota. Anyway, it will be at least 2 years before I even consider that 4cyl turbo hot mess to be.
Is Toyota cleaning all the engine debris out of the new 4runner engines or is left in there like in the Tundras ? Toyota built it's reputation and customer loyalty on reliable vehicles at a fair price. Seems like they're doing their best to reverse that trend.
Virtually all SUVs (and most of them are unibody, which is another problem) are moving / have moved to tiny turbo-charged engines. I wonder is this shitty trend will ever reverse.
Jeff, I am sure the new 4Runner will sell as well as the last one. My chief concern about the 4Runner is the somewhat cramped 2nd row. For a vehicle this huge, the second row lacks head and leg room. The other concern relates to the disappearance of the famous 40/20/40 rear seat. Why would they ever drop such a useful feature? 🤔
I just bought a '24 TRD Off Road Premium. Coming from a '17 Tundra, yeah, it felt "sluggish". I popped on a K&N Cold Air Intake, Magnaflow Overland Exhaust and a Banks Pedal Monster. These three mods have transformed my 4Runner into a much more responsive and fun to drive vehicle. The next mod is Suspension, bump stops and all terrain tires. If you're looking for a 4Runner, get the 5th Gen with a V6. You don't want to deal with turbos!!
Based on these newer prices, sort of glad I got my 23 GX460. All wheel drive and great stereo along with full time ATRAC and MTS with crawl control. And a rather proven NA V8 that can knock out 21-22 mpg on the road. Anxious to see what the MSRP will be for the Trailhunter.
If only they could’ve allowed the old v6 as an option. Even the 3.5 hybrid from a previous highlander would’ve been nice. 4Runner used to represent the most reliable vehicle you can buy.
Here is a reason, the engine will go the way of the Tundra… Toyota believes it’s the fancy gadgets that make people want to buy a Toyota, NO… it was Toyota’s reliability that sold them not some gadgets
Last December my wife and I bought a brand new 2023 tacoma and a 2024 4Runner. Can't wait to see what the 5th gen Tacomas and 7th Gen 4Runners will look like!

Love the styling of the 6th Gen especially that TrailHunter edition! The biggest ding for me is the lack of rear air controls. Wish they would switch to overhead air like the Land Cruiser. Those two small vents coming off the back of the console leave the second row stuffy and if you carry your dog with you in the cargo area it is miserable for them with no air vents. I still am very concerned about price. If the TRD Pro and TrailHunter are anywhere near the price of the TRD Pro Tacoma I think you’ll see a lot of people opt for the similarly priced Land Cruiser with the taller body and offroad capability.
I purchased a new 2023 TRD OFF Road Premium with KDSS. I'm glad I was able to find the version before the 2025'. If I want more power, I'll have it supercharged or procharger. I would have more HP/TQ and still have the reliability over this new version

So many people forget that the early 4.0L V6 is known for failing head gaskets. The 2.4L may have first year issues to work out, but it's very possible it'll be a worthy successor to the 4.0L. Sure the Tundras are having issues with the 3.5L twin turbo, but it could also be Toyotas next bullet proof engine. All the issues it's had so far was due to manufacturing issues, not design flaws.
Instead of 9 trim levels, how about 3 trim levels with 3 engine options, turbo four-cylinder, V6 and small V8. SR5 comes loaded and street oriented. TRD Off Road is the current Pro. Limited comes loaded with real leather, 20 wheels HUD. 6 cylinder and V-8 come with sunroof. No other option group needed.
@@michaelpalm2210 Funny, an inoperable sunroof is still a sunroof. My Tacoma had a sunroof that worked as good the day I sold as the day I bought it (9years).
Looks and colors is so not the real topic. Price and known reliability loss. Every mechanic will tell you a turbo charged engine will not last as long as a naturally aspirated engine. Unless Toyota has some secret sauce I hope they tell us but everyone buying these vehicles will smell the bs a mile away. We already have other trucks that aren’t starting out their revamp well. Salesmen will have their hands full in afraid. I think there’s too much focus on form rather than function. Toyota has seriously underestimated the psychology involved here.
I'll give you ONE I'll never buy a 4RUNNER or the Tacoma and Tundra. I will not let Toyota rip me off. I bought a 2024 Frontier Pro-X for 8000 dollars cheaper than the 52,000 dollar TRD off road. It's a V6!!!
I know 2025 can "fly". But why? Why to fly? Why do I need to create so much pressure in the smaller size engine I am sure very well designed? Driving mid to large SUV by definition does not mean to fly. What am I missing? I don't disregard new technology and I'm sure 2025 4R is going to be a very well designed generation, but only time will tell. And lets not forget Toyota made new engines just because tremendous government pressure to meet imaginary "green" emission targets. So if those new Tundra/Sequoia/Tacoma/4R engines will stand a time trial - I will be the first one to applaud and recognize the Toyota Engineering efforts and achievement given the scarcity circumstances. But for now, I'll stick to my Toyota 5.7LV8. Till it happens... Great review Jeff, as always. With love from Vancouver, British Columbia,.
Because people are morons. They want faster SUVs so they can race to the red light faster. Better power even though they don't tow with them. MORE technology, yet they are shocked when the dash lights up like Christmas tree. Giant, goofball "infotainment centers" even though we are supposed to be trying to mitigate distracted driving. The masses are just dumb and Toyota is following the market trends. It's the movie 'Idiocracy' but in real life.
Im glad it got its new model. But i too joined the last call movement on gen 5s. Have spent 10k so far on upgrades. Got about another 15k and who knows on time in the garage but i know when im done i have a tank for 15 years
I am thankful we own two 2021 Rav 4 Primes naturally aspirated and one Camry 2025 naturally aspirated. There is zero chance we will buy another Toyota if it comes in a turbo.
I don't like some of the interior / controls. Enough of a reason for me to keep my '22 TRD ORP a lot longer. Which is good. Some day i'll get a 6th gen , but not in a hurry. Exterior is great looking and "some " of the interior I could get used to.. the rest, it'l have to grow on me with time and see how reliable it ends up being. Great vid Jeff.
The 5th gen will be the last of its kind that will not only retain value but that will actually qualify to be a 4Runner. But hey maybe this will outlast, and keep up with previous generations.
1-The only thing the 5th gen needed was a transmission upgrade and I bet it would drive as good if not better than the unreliable 4cyl turbo. 2- Prices will be crazy, pay more for less compared to 5th gen. 3- Design looks like crap with the multi gen salad and handlebar Mustache. 4 - Nothing unique beside shell of the 4runner. Everything is passed over from the Tacoma. 5 - Get the 5th Gen 4Runner while you can as its the last true Toyota.
Driving new 2024 Tacoma for 7 weeks now and absolutely love it. Old was nice for what it was, but new one has better handling, acceleration and driving dynamics. Can't wait for new 4Runner!
Gen 5 IS a bullet proof tank. Things people complain about are minor stuff, info screens, buttons, heated back seats, heated cup holders etc. I wont go to far into detail however things that are concerning are for example the frame bump stops. Good old reliable bump stops for the past 14 years no issues what so ever. Toyota eliminated them of the fame and put them on top of the shocks....cant see that working out to well specially when then promoting barreling through the desert in the TRD pro. In my humble option I will be sticking with my Gen 5 for an extremally long time. Thank goodness Gen 5 has been tried, tested and true for the last 14+ years!
I’m not hating or protesting the 6th Gen, but I’m curious about 2nd row leg room / head room, and reliability with a brand new platform. The Tacoma stories I’ve heard have me a little worried. I’m sure everything will be sorted over time. The 5th Gen and every other Toyota ever made, was improved over time.
Easy: if you want the latest tech and gadgets and lots of recalls, rattling plastic (see new tundra and Tacoma) , nanny lights/whistles and have the newest ride then get the 6th Gen or Land Cruiser. If you want older tech and never worry about your vehicle having problems with bulletproof reliability get the 5th gen. What do you value? The constant nanny lights and whistles on the new Tacoma will place you in an insane asylum.
I would like for them to make the wind chill pearl color with the toyota red interior for one of the trims. That is my favorite combo but I typically only see it in the camrys
If people felt slow getting on the freeway with a v6, they need to learn to use a gas pedal properly, specifically that putting pressure on it makes it go faster. I could easily get on the freeway where cars were going 85 to 90.
Have a 2018 SR5 Premium. Sluggish? YES! Nothing like the good old (pre electronic/computers in cars) days with actual metal throttle cables between the pedal and carburetor. Fix? Banks Power Pedal Monster. MUCH better. Tunable acceleration. Not more power, but WAY more responsive. Pull out in traffic and just GO!

Funny how these guys try to sell you on what they want to. He said The 4Runner 6 cylinder is sluggish, not sluggish to me when I jump on my 2024 nautical blue runner she gets up😂
It’s even better when you have a better throttle kit on the 5th gen. Then again, it’s the little details that most don’t think of

Toyota 4runner owners biggest issue is transmission not enough gear which causes poor fuel mileage.
New 4Runner looks cool. But i think the previous generation looks timeless.
@@KG-kq9tk I think it's too similar to the Rav4 now. I'm thinking I might as well just get one of those.
I get from A to point B fast enough with my beautiful 2024 forerunner and it toes my trailer really well
These new toyotas are not like the previous well built ones. They are cheap and made for profits. Do your research folks, they have tons of issues, engine, transmissions, panel gaps, interior rattles, etc..
Wait for the recalls.
I just bought my 2024 SR5 premium in the ice cap color. I wanted an old school bullet proof truck.
I hope the new Truck is as reliable as the 5th gen.

Hey thanks good work!
Yup that is why I just bought a Gen5 TRD ORP
I won’t bring up the engine, but my biggest concern is how big is that back seat legroom compared with the fifth generation? Looks smaller on camera.
Yoooo JEFF!! Dude idc about this generation 4Runner came to see and get a good vibe you always put out
Will that new 4 cylinder be reliable? or will it be like the new Tundra V6.
Exactly it’s gonna be less reliable maybe recall in the future just like the tundra
@@josefermalino461 Yes and do we really want batteries in our 4runner? I don't drive in the city. Has Toyota forgot why people buy Toyota over other car makers?
@@DavidWX877ask the new idiot running toyota now. IT CANT BE A COINCIDENCE!🙈
Time will tell if the 4 banger turbo will be reliable. The first buyers will the guinea pigs.
The Limited doesn't have that low approach bumper anymore. Full time 4WD with center and rear lockers with the hybrid will be a budget LC250. I'm in.
I really like the limited
I love your 4Runner reviews! You hit all the right things. I am one of those people that upgrade their 4Runner every 2-3 years so the color choices are a huge deal for me. I would love to see the TRD Pro color options on the SR5 Premiums.
Awesome that is so cool of you to say
Will the old 5th gen V6 tank engine fit in this?
I Don't Know But I Am All In To See Someone Do A Engine Swap.
He’s a politician which means he’s a perfect car salesperson. All semantic nonsense
How about you address all the quality issues Toyota has had in the last few years?
The world's 4runner guru....God bless you sir. You explain everything so well, I love that blue color. It's beautiful 😍
Thanks! It’s so nice in person too
Have you had a chance to drive it
Thanks to you I totally want to upgrade my 4runner. The heritage blue is gorgeous 😍
Jeff, do you need to remind your subscribers to watch the ads so you can get paid?
That’s super nice of you to say that Dan.
Yes that is how creators get paid thru UA-cam - when people watch the ads. But I try to not mention that too much haha :)
@@AutoJeffReviews My pleasure Jeff. That is the least I can do for you since you made two reviews of the 2024 RAV4 Hybrid XSE. I especially LOVE the night review. I learned a lot!
Does the new 4Runner have the engine on/off function? This is the feature that turns the engine off at the red light and starts it as the break is released and the gas pedal pressed. I hate this feature. My new 2024 4Runner doesn’t have this feature.
I’m not a fan of the new styling. I am on my third 4Runner. I’ll stick with my ‘21 Nightshade edition.
I'm concerned about the room in the back seat. Is it comfortable for two adults? What are the mileage estimates on the electrified version?
Love your reviews!
Will all the 2025 4runner trims have those cool black fenders around the wheel? Or just the TRD Pro and Trail hunter? Asking because the Limited fenders have the matching body color so I’m curious what all the other trims will have?

Can you flat tow? Gow is it offroad vs landcrusier?
Click bait. Good ploy Jeff! I should have known that you would never have anything negative to say about Toyota. Anyway, it will be at least 2 years before I even consider that 4cyl turbo hot mess to be.
lol I knew it was catchy! But these are also eight comments that I pulled from viewers. So these are definitely things. People might hate about it.
Is Toyota cleaning all the engine debris out of the new 4runner engines or is left in there like in the Tundras ?
Toyota built it's reputation and customer loyalty on reliable vehicles at a fair price. Seems like they're doing their best to reverse that trend.
😂😂😂😂
Turbo. Save your time people it’s the turbo
Virtually all SUVs (and most of them are unibody, which is another problem) are moving / have moved to tiny turbo-charged engines. I wonder is this shitty trend will ever reverse.
@@stIncMale nope.
@@stIncMale If Biden somehow gets re-elected, you can kiss the ICE goodbye, say hello to all electric and 3 cylinder gasoline engines. TRUMP 2024!
Why would the second row be somewhat cramped. There’s plenty of room in the Land Cruiser and aren’t they pretty much the same package/size?
I don’t mind the 2nd row space in new 4Runner. Will be curious what you think if you test it for yourself Hog!
Have an awesome weekend

Any performance difference between 4 Runner limited and platinum?
Last December my wife and I bought a brand new 2023 tacoma and a 2024 4Runner. Can't wait to see what the 5th gen Tacomas and 7th Gen 4Runners will look like!
I added a Pedal Commander and it made a world of difference for get up an go! It has respectable power, but a painfully slow start off the line. Love my 5th gen baby!
Still driving my 3rd gen and ordered 5th gen before the V6 is gone
if theyre gone, will you still be able to buy those spare parts? will toyota still make spare parts for gen5 and below?..... what if toyota will stop at all, so people will buy the 6 gen?
@@bogart5131 I just put new lower ball joints and new inner and outer cv boots all purchased from my local Toyota dealership. I did the work myself and couldn’t believe they still have parts.
@@bogart5131. I just bought from my Toyota dealer new ball joints, CV boots and fasteners for my 1996. Can you believe dealer parts available on a 28 year old vehicle! and the 3rd gen only ran 6 years. The 5th gen ran 14 years and with hundreds of thousands of them made parts will be available a long time wether Toyota or third party because there’s money in parts
The Trd pro version of the 2025 4 Runner will be just short of $70,000.
Sounds like typical Con man used car sales man😅
Does it have power lift gate?
I purchased a new 2023 TRD OFF Road Premium with KDSS. I'm glad I was able to find the version before the 2025'. If I want more power, I'll have it supercharged or procharger. I would have more HP/TQ and still have the reliability over this new version
what's the payload with the hybrid battery?
I have a 2021 TRD Pro 4Runner and I installed the Pedal Commander($299) and it works great. The 2 things I dislike about it is MPG and the color I have is black.
All the issues it's had so far was due to manufacturing issues, not design flaws.
does the passenger seat have more options for 2025? Like goes up an down for more head room for tall people
The forth gen 4 runner with the v 8 motor was the best 4x4 in the world just as good as a landcruser Toyota needs to bring that technology back a v8

That was the most boring 4Runner ever made.

Nope! sunroofs eventually fail. If you keep a vehicle for 10 + years like me ,the roof will leak or stop working.
@@michaelpalm2210 Funny, an inoperable sunroof is still a sunroof. My Tacoma had a sunroof that worked as good the day I sold as the day I bought it (9years).
Will 93 Octane Gas ⛽️ going to be required to run those 2.5 Engines?
Absolutely not. The 4Runner won't require premium fuel.
No. Use regular unleaded
I’m very curious if the Trailhunter and TRD Pro will have the options available that are on the platinum. Such as heads up display…
Just a bunch of junk.
I just bought a 2024 4Runner SR5 premium. I love it! I’m so happy I got this generation! ❤
how much did it cost?

Nice reporting ,Jeff.
What engine does that have the Highlander engine or the tundra engine? Do you know?
1-The only thing the 5th gen needed was a transmission upgrade and I bet it would drive as good if not better than the unreliable 4cyl turbo.
2- Prices will be crazy, pay more for less compared to 5th gen.
3- Design looks like crap with the multi gen salad and handlebar Mustache.
4 - Nothing unique beside shell of the 4runner. Everything is passed over from the Tacoma.
5 - Get the 5th Gen 4Runner while you can as its the last true Toyota.
I would buy one if they upgrade the transmission yo atleast 8 speed
Jeff this is confusing. Can’t decide 5th gen ,6th gen. Or even Land Cruiser. Comfortable ride which is best?
I’d choose Land Cruiser over 5th gen.but I haven’t driven the 6th gen yet :)
5th Gen all the way.
I will keep my 2023 trd. Hope the 4runner doesn't have engine problems like the tundra. The taco sounds like a diesel too.
