We packed 10 medium sized suitcases in the back and drove 3200 miles from Texas to the east coast . Spending over a week in our new limited really made us appreciate all the quality and build of a Toyota and I don’t regret buying it one minute! Best decision we ever made! Gas mileage was between 19-21 mpg on a full tank of 87 octane…..and once we even got 24mpg up in the mountains of a small town in Virginia. Toyota has my business for a long time….as long as they keep building the 4 runner like my 2023! The 4.0 V6 had sufficient horsepower….@270….

We have thought about buying a more fuel efficient car, but the cost savings are clearly offset by the reliability and ruggedness of this car. So what, we spend $500 a year more (yes, first world luxury) and get to drive a car that she can rely on, even at that mileage. It is heading towards 300,000 miles, and it is still all original with the exception of tires, shocks/springs, alternator, and brake pads and rotors. And the battery. That is it.

Always suggested waiting for the 2nd year when they put out a new generation. If you look at the used car market, you are right about the last year of a generation usually holds its value really well because all the issues revolving around reliability have been ironed out and the tech although outdated compared to competitors, is usually a big difference compared to earlier years(better materials for interior, improved led lights, etc). 4Runners are probably the best when it comes to depreciating, even 3 year old 4 runners prior to pandemic could still be sold at msrp levels.

2011 4Runner limited here with 200K miles and no major issues. Worst thing that's ever happened is the neutral safety switch went bad causing the 4Lo light to blink and gear shifter to become stiff. A fairly common problem. $130 part and $90 of labor to have my local guy put it on and problem solved. Love this car and plan to keep it another 100K miles.

The bear hunting sites are located 10 miles away on BAD 2 track. First day we took another guy's brand new Ram 2500 Longhorn. Next day we took the 4Runner. There was no comparison. Bought that exact truck after being on a list for a grey TRD Pro for almost 8mo. As soon as I saw there was a year extension on the 5th Gen, and the ‘special’ color on the pro was Solar Octane, it was a ‘must have’. ZERO regrets. It’s replacing a tricked out 2nd Gen I had to give up a decade ago when kids and dogs and stuff forced us into something bigger. It definitely feels like a vehicle from another generation, but in all the best ways possible. You did sortof gloss over a number of differences that set the TRD Pro and TRD Off Road Premiums apart: KDSS option (OR Premium), ATRACS, crawl control, terrain select, etc.). Off the showroom floor, they are so darn capable.

Watching your videos has helped convince me into getting my own 4runner. My family was in need of a larger vehicle and I was debating on either the 2023 Highlander hybrid, 2023 Honda Pilot, or 2023 4runner. After much thought we decided to go with the 4runner with the 3rd row upgrade.
As a new owner of a 2023 4Runner Sr5 premium 4x4, I can say I have no regrets. Sure the gas mileage is very poor compared to the Highlander, and pilot, but theres something endearing about the 4 runner.
The design has aged well and still looks like a modern vehicle given its age.
I was drawn to the 4runner becuase of its well known reliability and durability.
Even though the highlander and pilot would probably have been more suited for my family's needs, the 4Runner inspires a spirit of adventure.
Will i be rock climbing with my 4runner any time soon? Most likely not. But, I do plan to go off the beaten path on a few camping trips and even drive up to Big Bear without feeling deterred from the slight incliment weather.
I look forward to the many adventures and memories my family will share with our new 4Runner.

I wouldn’t do it unless you absolutely needed the extra clearance
It monkeys with the geometry of the components and seriously degrades road handling
I am not going to use mine for anything except road trips and some light off-roading
Good luck to you and enjoy your new truck

My wife and I bought a 2015 4Runner TRD Pro, here we are 8 years later with 110,000+ miles and we have not had any, and I mean any issues at all. We do oil changes every 5k miles and that’s it, the most reliable car truck we have ever owned next to my 2015 Tundra Platinum.

I have had very good service from any of my Hondas and Toyotas. That being said, I have a Voodoo Blue 2007 FJ Cruiser. I bought it in 2015 with 81k on it. Today, it has 97k and I changed ALL the fluids and I just love driving that machine. Inside the cabin you get a most secure feeling like nothing is going to get you. I love the three windshield wipers and the extra storage box in front of the driver which looks like the passenger airbag cover. This car was equiped with every option available from the factory. The speakers in each front door are huge and even though the CD player is only single load, I have NEVER heard a better factory sound system in any vehicle. It is better than the JBL in our 2013 Avalon Limited with all factory options including the Technology Package. I am thoroughly impressed with that FJ Cruiser and if I were to replace it wiuld be a 2014 or 15 Forerunner. They are better for families than the FJ because of rear door access. I think the way the rear doors on the FJ open and seem to be on an odd hinge set up and seem to drop down is just a marvel and not seen on any other car I know of. The rack on the roof is handy and having the soare tire where you don't have to crawl under the car is a huge plus. As you probably have gathered, I LIKE TOYOTAS

TRD off road premium is hands down the best, I agree. Will say, I got a 2022 sr5 premium, and it’s perfect. It’s so good I can’t really see why I would need the rear locker, unless I was on a beach or doing very serious off roaring. And even then, a-trac is pretty amazing for 90 percent of those situations. It’s also way less than any trd model. And for the less money you can buy awesome tires and some cool interior accessories instead

    • @MrSatchelpack

The sr5 doesn't have kdss. Despite what a lot of people tell themselves there is a perceptible difference in ride quality. I wish they offered it in the sr5.

One thing about putting it in 4wd every month or so to prevent seizing (if you don’t have full-time 4wd or awd), only drive in straight lines e.g in a parking lot unless you’re on dirt or snow. Gear binding can damage the transmission if turning on asphalt in 4wd since the tires wanting to spin at different speeds will fight against the 4wd system. On dirt, the slower tire just slips instead of transferring that twisting motion to the transmission

My wife and I are from NC but go to Utah as much as we can. We’ve rented Cherokees, Armadas and explorers and taken them all off road from Canyonlands to Cedar Mesa. Did not feel comfortable with the the Explorer off road, but it did have a lot of comfort bells and whistles and was a good ride driving on the highway. When shopping and doing lots of research for a new car in 2021 it came down to the 4Runner and an Explorer which was cheaper, had many more options, and had better gas mileage. We bought a 2021 4Runner TRD Premium for exactly all the reasons this guy mentioned. We regularly take it to deep sand beaches of OBX and effortlessly drive the beaches and will be driving to Utah soon to visit some of trails where we were not comfortable with in an Explorer.
