Long Term ownership review, 1998 Toyota Corolla VE. High mileage: 275,733 miles

- 1998 Toyota Corolla with a 1.8 liter, inline 4 cylinder engine mated to an automatic transmission. Corolla was purchased from a Toyota dealership in 2005 with 26000 miles on the odometer. As of Jan 3, 2021 the Corolla has 275,733 miles on the odometer with original transmission and original engine.
The only major repair was air condition compressor needed replacement at 263,360 miles. The valve cover gasket was replaced about 261,000 miles. Power steering line replaced about 252,000 miles. Rear struts replaced at 270,000 miles.
Oil and filter changes performed roughly every 3000 miles or less. The oil used is any brand on sale in 5w-30. Oil filter any brand on sale also. The timing chain was replaced around 150,000 miles and transmission fluid flushed. Over the course of 16 years of ownership the alternator has been replaced three times and starter twice. The interior door handles on passenger and driver side replaced about 4 times each. The exterior door handles on passenger and drivers side one time each. The serpentine belt replaced two times.
The windshield wiper sprayers driver and passenger side two times each with original equipment sprayers. I installed aftermarket sprayers but they didn't work very well that is why I use original equipment. This has been a very dependable, reliable vehicle to own. It has seen the snow to tropical weather on a many highways and pot hole ridden roads. The Corolla has traveled from New Hampshire to Arkansas, Mississippi to Florida and wherever paved roads may be! High mileage cars don't happen by accident they get high mileage on purpose by proper maintenance and stewardship.

After buying a couple of new cars and selling them after 2 or 3 years i've realized that there was saying that goes something like "we buy things that we don't need, with money we don't have, to impress people that we don't like". Cars last long especially toyotas if we look after it.

I noticed our models dont have cabin air filters that need to be changed, which is nice, they started putting the changable ones from year 2003 onwards I believe. I was just confused as I saw some DIY videos about changing cabin air filters which listed my year model in it, but found some info. online that we dont have to worry about it.

My 1990 camry was driven to the wrecker at 330,000 km, 23 years old because of rust. It still had the original starter, alternator, rad, muffler, front struts, wheel bearings, rear brakes steering rack, transmission, engin and all front end components. It did have a few oil leaks along the way, but most were easly repaired by me. If only I cold buy another simple car like that with out all the gimicks.

One of the best cars ever. Honda Civic can take a walk compared to this generation of Corolla. Im currently driving an 05 Toyota Avalon with over 300,000 miles and its a great car. But i still miss my 99 Corolla LE. It was the perfect reliable package .. i felt like i was surrounded by luxury with a/c and power windows in my little corolla. Im constantly on craigslist looking for a corolla of this generation... to find one with no rust power windows and a power sunroof is like the holy grail for me aha.

I have been on the lookout for a Toyota Corolla manual shift. Well, just the other day it happened. A motorist asked me for some assistance to get her manual shift Corolla started it again!
I was smiling inside upon seeing that manual shift lever and yes, I got her car started. The Corolla needed some petrol and a jump start.

I'm so proud of you for keeping it maintained after all these years. Sadly, way too many people neglect their vehicles. I'm the 3rd or 4th owner of a 2000 Corolla (1zzfe) I bought in 2012 with 154,000 miles and it's at 212k miles now, because it became rarely used in 2014 with the purchase of a new vehicle. It burns oil badly, check engine light's been on for at least the last 30,000 miles, catalytic converter is clogged, can't drive in high elevation(Colorado), o2 sensors are bad probably because of the excessive oil consumption, engine ticks loudly, muffler bracket rusted out and fell off, muffler has a hole in it from having the bracket break 15 miles from my house.(had no choice but to drive it home dragging like that). All that said, it runs fine. It could drive cross country right now. As long as I skip Colorado. 😂
Gotta love that Toyota stamina. They don't give up without a fight.

Thank you the "Old Workhorse" has been serving well! I finished a 900 plus miles vacation road trip in the month of March 2021. "Old Workhorse" performed flawless. The only on the road repair I had to perform was replacing the original factory alternator and serpentine belt at approximately 280, 000 miles on the odometer.

Im driving the family 98 corolla right now. I was driving a 07 Lexus gs350 until it died on me while driving at 140K mi due to my ignorance and neglect of cars.
Now im driving this corolla at 204K miles. Its pretty bad and a rust bucket haha. BUT im finally learning how to do basic car maintenance stuff myself, im proud to say ive restored it somewhat.
The car had super spongy brakes, then braking started to sound like aluminum cans crushing and felt grindy, and above 60mph the steering wheel would terribly shake.
Because of these issue and not having any other choice i delve into learning how to finally address the issues myself. I replaced the calipers, rotors, pads drum shoes, and master cylinder and learned how to bleed the brakes. Learned some things about the fuse and how to restore some dead electircal components. And I learned how to do my own oil changes (this is the main neglect that caused my lexus failure), and the car is running waaaaay better now but theres still many things i can fix. I appreciate this car for lasting this long and allowing me the opportunity to work on it. Hopefully i can maintain it until 300K too! Lol
It amazes me i only spent like around 400 hundred dollars in parts for these jobs (and also had to spend more money to buy tools haha), BUT these jobs would've cost $2-5K if brought to an autoshop!
The failure of my much nicer Lexus was a lesson in disguise. Now all i do is consume auto mechanic content! Haha

Just bought a brand new 2021 Corolla Hatchback XSE in January, hoping mine lasts this long! It's fascinating to me to think about all the sportiness and technology that's loaded into the current gen, and know it still bears the Corolla nameplate and then I see older ones like yours that are very literally just barebones, no frills transportation! The selling point of all the older generations until now has always been "boring, basic, but safe and super reliable transportation" (and don't take that as an insult, I think it's great! Just fascinating to see the transition happening now). I will say that your E110/8th-gen 98-02 Corolla is my favorite gen of all the older gens. If someone came up to me and offered me any previous-gen newly-manufactured Corolla with 0 miles on it, I'd pick this one in a heartbeat. There's just something about it. It looks the most Corolla out of all the Corollas.

as a 98 rolla ve owner myself this car can keep on going with the exception of the starter had to be replace and now im replacing the radiator and upper mount brackets other than that this car is still running strong
Mr. Perez, Totally agree with you on the Corolla running strong. I replaced the starter one time in over the 16 years of ownership. I recall the mileage on the odometer at the time of replacement 155,000 miles.
April 1, 2021 I replaced the OEM Alternator that was stamped with Toyota on it. The alternator stopped working after 23 years of service. The miles on the odometer at the time of replacement was 278,620 miles.

If unsure to sell or keep , look up those videos with those gadgets to make it feel new. That's what I'm going to do and then next year I'll make the rust grinded and maybe a little paint job.

98-02 Toyota Corolla one of the best cars! Toyota improved this from the previous generation, more power, no more timing belt (timing chain). Purchased mine for $350.00 w/ 203,000 miles. Guy didn't know anything about cars. All repairs myself and now I have 245,000 miles. Best car I have ever owned for reliability.

I use to work at a Toyota car lot with a body shop back in the late 90s. In '99 someone brought their 1985 camry with 485k miles on it wrecked and they paid out of pocket to get it fixed.

I have a 94 Corolla with similar repairs. Right now the car is at the shop because we can't get the driver door open as the locks won't open. I have replaced the alternator and Serpentine belt and windshield wiper spray nozzles and interior door handles and driver seat belt and the latch on the hood would not chat and the plastic on the brake lights melted and all the brake lights had to be replaced. The plastic on the dashboard is amazing but most of the other plastic is not stable overtime but next year the car will be 30 years old. The air conditioner is still very cold but unfortunately after the brake lights were fixed in the radio no longer works as it should. There is rust on the exterior trunk lid opposite of where some welds are to reinforce and attach piece of metal on the interior that I cannot get out. Also rust on the top near the front and rear windows where spot welds had taken place when manufactured.

2000 Corolla here, 212k miles. Still drive it once or twice a week to keep it as fresh as my time allows possible. Never gonna get rid of it. It will be passed down to my kids who will hopefully maintain it.

Proud owner of a japanese-built european 98' Corolla Liftback with the 1.6l 4A-FE engine (107HP) and 4-speed ATM. Runs like a clock and shifts smoother than my friend's 50.000€ Audi. The only "issue" I could find is that the ATM acts a little 'wonky' (like a short shudder) when it shifts into overdrive. my toyota mechanic said that's negligible, so I don't care. lol

I have a 2002 corolla for a secondary vehicle, it's at 218k, cold a/c hot heat, I only paid $900 for it 2 years ago and only put about 16k on it in those 2 years

Those 1zzfe engines had a major recall due to a poor piston ring design that causes carbon to build up and burn oil. To prevent that, you have to very generous with your oil changes.
I have a 2010 CE and i hope to keep it for 15 more years haha

I had the earlier generation model, 1997. The ve that you have has a 3 speed transmission, which is high rpms on highway. Im surprised yours lasted for so many miles with the high revs. The ce and le had the 4 speed and better highway gas mileage.

Thank you for your contribution and providing the transmission options available on the Corolla models. This VE Corolla now has 301815 miles on the original transmission and engine as of 2023 June 15th. This car shifts smooth and gets and estimated 30 miles per gallon on the interstates. Average speed of travel on interstates about 65 mph's is the sweet spot cruising speed for this VE Corolla.
The major repairs for this year 2023 on the VE Corolla were replacing all four engine mounts with original equipment engine mounts bought for Toyota Dealership. I also replaced the driver and passenger constant velocity axles as well. Also replaced front brake pads, rotors, rack/pinion, two new tires on the front with an alignment.

I have a 1998 LE with a moon roof. I has around 180K miles. I bought it in 2004 for $5500 and it had 88K miles on it. Downside of these cars are, oil consumption (1 quart every 700-1000 miles) and engine check light issue. Oil consumption issue is caused by a flawed piston oil drain hole and piston ring design (Toyota owners manual says it will consume oil too). Oil drain holes on the pistons are too small and there are only four drain holes, so it gets clogged up with carbon over time. As for soft piston rings, they don’t scrape off oil all that well. All that oil burning is bad for O2 sensors, catalytic converters, and emissions (commiecrat California is a real ball buster when it comes to emissions). I could do an engine out and replace those pistons with high compression forged pistons and stiffer rings, but that wouldn’t pass emissions in California. 1ZZFE is a great engine if tuned right. That’s why Lotus Elise, Lotus Exige, and the third gen MR2 uses it.

98 LE with a sunroof is my DREAM corolla. honestly its exactly what someone needs if they just need a car... toss an aftermarket heated seat in there and you're golden. 40mpg and wondeful quality!
I have an 02 and it still runs like a charm as well, but mine only has 100k, so it had better run like a charm :) I'm wondering if yours is burning oil since some say that generation of Corollas starts burning oil at 150k miles or so?

Wow, 100k on an 2002 Corolla amazing! Great question you asked. Yes, the 1998 burns a bit of oil. I go thru a quart every 6 months. The Corolla also has minor valve gasket leak that is contributing to oil loss.
I noticed the leak and loss around 225, 000 miles on the odometer. Keep on putting the miles on. Long live your 2002 Corolla!

My 2000 Corolla burns oil excessively but still runs fine. I bought the car with 154k miles on it. I think it burned a little oil from then and only got worse. I plan to do an engine rebuild and clean up the internals. I want to own the car forever even if it is ugly as hell. 😂
My 98 Sienna runs like new 163k Put a bottle of AT-205 in the next oil change and it stop the oil seals from weeping and leaking on the engine. The list of parts I replaced is too long to write. I don't pay mechanics. The lids need paint. I changed the transmission fluid, installed a heavy duty transmission cooler, Denso radiator and trailer hitch. I have pulled 4x the van's trailer capacity and power stop pads stopped the van at lights. Posi-quiet pads did not!

@@ablecraft842 your welcome. All my Gen1 1998 Sienna is, is a Camery with a minivan body. And Toyota replaced the 4 cylinder engine with the 3.0 V6. The MOOG control arms and ball joints last about 35k. Had Toyota left a 4 cylinder engine in the Sienna, the control arms/ball joints would not wear nearly as fast (design flaw) The 1998 3 liter is not an interference engine. 1.8ltr engine is bullet proof! My buddy installed several turbo kits on 1.8 Corrola engines. His son just built a 2001 Corrola with a 1.8 300hp crate engine. Certain year Corrola's were produced with exhaust headers from the factory. It does not require touching the bottom of the engine to add a cam and a low boost turbo and make over 200hp. How heavy is a Corrola? 2700 pounds.
My first Corolla was a 1995 Geo Prizm sedan, bought new off the lot with 13 miles on it. Replaced the timing belt at 150K and it survived to over 200K when it got T-boned in 2009. Was a great car.
Just bought a 1996 Corolla wagon, stick shift, with 319K miles. Runs like a champ. 33 mpg that will probably improve after a tune-up. Addressing all of the issues that the prior owner seemed unable to afford. 👍😏. Keeping it as long as possible!! 500K miles??

I have a corolla 2000 station wagon with the 1,4 l 4ZZFE engine. It dosent burn almost any oil between oil changes and it has 254000 km..always start and its realible. Not bad after 22 years i think...

Thank you for your post and testimony on the reliability of these Toyota transmissions. The Corolla in this video achieves 28 miles per gallon highway and 26 miles per gallon city driving 350 miles before a fill up. The current mileage on the odometer is 289,891 miles.

I did it last year by sourcing a lot of the 2T1 Corollas. A few VEs did come with power windows from the factory (they are quite rare) and I managed to find some door panels for mine. I was originally going to take a CE or LE door panel and just swap the fabric insert over but I lucked out. The main thing is the common crank window version VE's from the TMMC plant, you have to swap the secondary main wiring harness (that connects to your wipers and seat belt reminders, etc...) with one that is able to be equipped with power windows. Basically 82131-02250 (crank window wire harness) to 82131-02280 (the whole 9 yards wire harness). The rest is just regulators, actuators, door lock relay, wiring and bits and pieces. These cars are pre-wired with a lot of things so it make installing many things real easy. So yeah, no problem man.

I will Never sell my 98 corolla (maroon), her name is Ruby. Old girl just hit 250,000 miles....has NEVER let me down. My girl is the 5 SPEED tranny....finally changed the clutch last year....lol! She likes a quart a oil a week! About to change the valve cover gasket and rear O2 sensor tonight...that's why UA-cam mixed this video in my feed....hope you still have yours.....she's probably at 300,000 now....I always joke around saying I can't wait til mine hits 1,000,000 miles. I hear a rattle on my 2010 Corolla only upon cold start(when it's been parked for more then an hour) . What could this issue be?

That noise your hearing can be a variety of issues.
I would isolate wear the noise is coming from, under the hood, under the car or within the car.
Have another person start the car and you listen to where the noise may be coming from. Also pop the hood open, prior to starting to the car. You may be able to isolate the rattle if it's coming from the engine compartment.
Common rattles from engine compartment: Worn timing chain, valves are chattering, serpentine belt tensioner needs replacing or serpentine belt, low on oil.
Common rattles coming from underneath car: upon a cold start up. Loose exhaust components such as exhaust heat shield loose on top of muffler, catalytic converter or exhaust manifold rusted or loose, exhaust pipe. Sway bar links loose or brake shields behind brake rotors. Basically any loose components can emit a rattle when vibrating against steel.
Common noises coming from inside car:
Trunk may have objects rolling around inside or shifting upon start up.
The noise, rattle can be isolated you need to listen and observe. Hopefully this information can move you in the right direction in locating and finding the source behind that rattle! Have an Ablecraft day!

I would need more specific information in order to address your water leak question. However, I would strongly recommend taking the car to reputable service center and have them perform a pre-purchase inspection on the car before you buy it.
Paying for a pre-purchase inspection will save you time and resources and perhaps a peace of mind when buying a used car.

I would inspect the serpentine belt to make sure its serviceable, inspect the belt tensioner, and the air conditioner pulley.
Does the vin start with a J? Just wondering if it was made in Japan. I'm debating on the camry and corolla for my next car but it'll be a long ways from now lol.
Great question! I did some research. The world manufacturer identifier (WMI) starts with the first three values of vehicle identification number (VIN). Position 1 starts with a 1. I researched what the 1 means. Position 1 denotes region which is North America specifically United States where this Corolla was made.
The subsequent following values in the VIN are N second digit and X third digit. The coupling of 1NX revealed place of manufacture. Second position N, New United Motor Manufacturing (NUMMI) located in Fremont, California. Third value X is manufacturing division or vehicle type.
NUMMI was a jointly owned General Motors and Toyota automobile manufacturing plant that operated from 1984 and closed 2010. Tesla, INC would reopen it in 2010 as Tesla production facility.

The 1998-2002 vins start with 1NX if built in NUMMI California or 2T1 in Cambridge ON Canada. The J Vins of these cars had a different body style and the A engines instead of the ZZ.

120.000 miles on the transmission oil change ? you should change it with the filter every 30.000 miles tops to protect your transmission . add a can of complete fuel system cleaner to clean the engine combustion chamber and injectors . Change the fuel filter every 10.miles . Change the spark plugs every 20,000 miles . Also add some engine flush with ur next oil engine change with filter . It will clean the gung and old oil buildup out of ur system .

This 1998 Corolla with the 1.8 Liter 4-cylinder engine miles per gallons are approximately 25 mpg city and 32 highway mpg. How to achieve the best miles per gallon? Maintenance is the key to having your car perform at its best. The Corolla meets all of its recommended maintenance requirements e.g tune ups, fluid changes, fuel filter, suspension and brakes checks to ensure function to standard. Another tip is that I add about bottle of Seafoam to the gas tank every 1000 miles to help decarbonize valves, fuel lines and injectors. Overall if something is broken or needs repair on Corolla the issue is corrected.
