In early April 2020, I sold my moms 98 (orig. owner) with 3sp Auto Trans and a bit over 283k miles for $1000, mechanic bought it, and left pretty content with the buy. I learned a lot of maintenence on that one car. Very reliable indeed.
All the things you said were 💯 I have a 97 Corolla 303k miles still running strong. Don’t forget about the 1.8 timing belt motors still good engines belt breaks no worries just replace it
I got a 2 owner Chevy prism same car with 37k 0 rust that I got from my Grandmom. I am getting ready to show it some love get new bumpers (city car), paint it, put new shocks and headliner in it.
Over 210,000 miles on my 1998 Toyota Corolla. Nothing's ever gone that was any big deal. Two brake jobs and two batteries--which just seems like normal maintenance. Somebody else here made a comment about the door handles and I've had the same thing happen. I've had to replace three on the front seat passenger side and two on the driver's side. Which is kind of a strange thing to go wrong on an otherwise perfect car. The paint's still great, the gas mileage is super, and it's unbelievably quiet. It does use a little oil--which has been mentioned here, also--but I keep on top of it and just write it off as a personality quirk of the car. Best decision I've ever made, I think, was to buy this car new in 1998. It feels like an old friend.
My crap mobile (2012 Chrysler 200) fell apart at 90,000 miles. It's still sitting in my driveway. About a year and a half ago a buddy told me his grandfather had a Corolla for sale for 3000 dollars. It was a 09 with a standard transmission with only 75,000 miles on it and a mint body. I bought the car and a year and a half later it still runs and drives like a brand new vehicle. It starts up even in freezing cold Canadian winters. I'm 6"5 285 lbs and there's a ton of room in it. I'll never buy North American again.
Thank you for this! I am getting one tomorrow at a local car lot for $2500 with 137k they did all the good maintence you would normally do for a used car including new tires and plugs and gaskets supposedly.
I just bought a 2010 corolla ce. The only problem I have and didn't notice it when i was buying it is; When starting it up in the morning, the RPM goes to max. This only happens when you start it after an hour.
Amen, brother! I bought a used 2000 about eight years ago when my Mercedes was totaled. I was immediately impressed with oil changes that cost 1/5 of the price of Mercedes changes. Then I found out it had a timing chain instead of belt and decided to just maintain it well. My goal was 200k miles and quickly learned that proper maintenance should yield twice that. I actually prefer the simplicity. You've not lived until you've dealt with electronic issues after electronic issue like a Mercedes. I do all my own work and rarely spend over an hour on on any repair. Regarding headliner, I saw replacement kits but instead went to a local fabric shop and got (two yards) of matching felt for like $5. Then I got spray adhesive from Amazon for like $5, pulled the old one out, pulled off felt, applied new one, it looks new. Regarding the paint, I had some of that peeling clear coat on the door and ordered the paint code (inside the door) on ebay. It's a little darker but mostly blended right in and looks way better. I'm now at 190k miles, no burning oil, 36mpg freeway. I'm currently wrestling with a P0420. I'm not giving in to new cat yet, but it's driving me nuts. No exhaust leaks, but performance does feel clogged, trying to figure out how to measure back pressure.
Use a Lazer thermometer to check the temperature in front of the cat and behind the cat, if they're the same temperature, it's a bad converter, if it's higher at the back, it's starting to clog. A good converter will be hotter at the front than the rear, hopefully this helps. Thanks for your comment!
@@GrumpyMonkeyGarage You sure? I have seen that it was supposed to be higher in the rear (outlet) after the chemical reaction. Regardless, same in/out implies bad - I've used a thermometer but the readings weren't consistent (sometime different, sometime the same).
@@GrumpyMonkeyGarage I also wanted to check backpressure. On other cars they say to screw a pressure gauge in where upstream O2 sensor goes. I don't think the Corolla's unscrews (from that flange, I forgot).
It’s good to run into your comment I keep have the p0420 but my exhaust manifold has rusted through making a cool sounding motor lmao but it keeps coming back I tried changing both o2 sensors still doesn’t clear the code I’m dreading this to replace the cat and exhaust manifold but ca emissions is coming so Ill have no choice I’d rather not sell the car I think I’ll have to replace the motor it smokes bad
@@erikgonzalez2278 I see I didn't close my solution, it was the cat. But I exhausted all options including both sensors and cat clearner (G2P which does work) and lacquer thinner idea (which didn't work, which I suspected). If you have 200k miles, it just might be time. I'd do the manifold first since it clearly needs replacing, but I doubt that throws the 420. I got anWalk cat (recommended by muffler shop) on Amazon for $200 (they were like 800, then 566, then 400 then near year end they were closing them out and I think it was like 212 or something - high demand last summer due to all the thefts) and shop welded it in for $100. Old one looked good, no rattling, but shop said that doesn't mean anything and I'll be happy. Sure enough it passed CA smog no issue and has been fine for almost a year. Walker is guaranteed, make sure to get 'CARB compliant' fir the CA smog nazis.

Great video. I have a 1999 toyota corolla, it has a temperature problem. Lola, that's her name, has had a new radiator, fan assemble, upper and lower hose, thermostat, water pump, temperature senors, replaced and when she starts, temperature spikes up in about five minutes. Gave her all this loving including an oil change and she still spikes up. What am I missing ? Oh, I also replaced the relays and fuse. Help. The Fans turn on when the AC is engaged, but don't turn on any other way. She has antifreeze. Could a blower motor resistor keep the fans from turning on?
If it's not rusty or crashed, that's an excellent deal, those older Corollas had a timing belt, so check to make sure that was done on time, chains started in 98 (atleast in the US)

🛑 What about 1.6 mechanic is it durable too? I have no idea what kind of corolla it is but it has rounded headlights 😅 the major problem is only oil burning and rings ? Thx
I got really exited, i thought the motor might be swapped.. But no.. It's the Non-VVTi version of the 1zzfe 1.8ltr that you can tell by the Aluminum intake vs the Plastic intake on the VVTI 1zzfe, and yet still not the 1zzfeD that was in the MR2 Spyder or the Celica GT that used forged crank and rods.. But that motor is still a good motor, assuming you change the oil every 3k miles, otherwise get ready to be doing piston rings around the 200K mile mark as the piston rings were junk from the factory on these engines..

I don't dislike the 96-97 Corolla, but the timing belt is what gets me. Most customers won't be able to budget that into their life, and when it breaks it's a lot for the average person. But if you stay on top of that timing belt absolutely that car will go just as long! I recommend the 98-02s because they only need cheap oil changes and the occasional brake job. They'll outlast us all.

Thank you make me happy I just bought a 1999 for $750 nothing wrong with it other then tired paint the odometer just hitting 300,000
I paid 500 for 1998 with 123,000 miles clean title
In early April 2020, I sold my moms 98 (orig. owner) with 3sp Auto Trans and a bit over 283k miles for $1000, mechanic bought it, and left pretty content with the buy. I learned a lot of maintenence on that one car. Very reliable indeed.
These are amazing. My 1997 Corolla has gotten me through a lot.
My WRX has only been getting around 16 mpg, so fired up the 98 Corolla. 114k miles and it gets like 35mpg. Same Khaki!
I don't think this corrola give 38 mpg . Probably he is lying. Because I have Camry 1998 and it gives 19 mpg
I have a 98 corolla I love it so much you're are hilarious the references you made 😂😂😂 5 on pump 7
🛑 What about 1.6 mechanic is it durable too? I have no idea what kind of corolla it is but it has rounded headlights 😅 help
I paid $900 for mines in 2014, and it goes faster than a new car
Wow $900 thas a great deal
I have a 2021 RAM buttttttt… I just picked up a 1998 Corolla for $500 on Sunday. Couldn’t pass up on that
Just found your channel, I appreciate everything you stand for in this video! Keep doing you man!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment, be sure to check out our $500 car challenge that went live around December 22' !
@@GrumpyMonkeyGarage Your honesty is awesome. I am much like you, I'm all about reliability, flashy fades.
I am getting ready to show it some love get new bumpers (city car), paint it, put new shocks and headliner in it.
just bought one $1700 80k miles
Thank you for reassuring me on a used car purchase. I'm not a car guy but your video is very reassuring.
Good quality video. Love these corollas, my gf hates that i like them and always have them around for beaters
Lots of parts yes., That Toyota is like a tank. Is better than my Nissan Sentra SV 2015. I preferred old cars model.
Honestly the generation the 98 rolla is from I love it, it's a relatively fun shitbox
6"5 285 yum
Thank you for this! I am getting one tomorrow at a local car lot for $2500 with 137k they did all the good maintence you would normally do for a used car including new tires and plugs and gaskets supposedly.
🙂
I live in central america and that corolla is my first car, got it for $3800
Thanks for the review. Very helpful!
I have the same car. I love my beater. It is worth spending 1500 so far including sales price 3 years ago!
Great video man. Got a 99 prizm myself
Just picked one up about a week ago got it for 1350 with 135k on it I got a steal honestly.
I just bought a 2010 corolla ce. The only problem I have and didn't notice it when i was buying it is; When starting it up in the morning, the RPM goes to max. This only happens when you start it after an hour.
That's by design, then it should drop down.
Nice! My friend is selling me one in immaculate condition and only 130k on it.. $2200
Worth every penny! My 95 DX is at 277k
I appreciate u, thanks for the truth appraisal I own one seriously it's a unkillable life savings machine it will keep moving with many problems won't just give up.... I really liked about the a/c really colder than other modern small cars ...
I had one,my dad brought it from USA to Jordan it has a 1zz engine. An amazing car
Just got one for $800. It only has 117K miles.
I'll argue with anyone who wants to say a 98 Civic is better or more reliable than a 98 Corolla. Its just not the case!
Love this!❤❤❤
I might buy a 1999 Toyota corolla CE Sedan 4D for 2500 as a daily driver. My regular daily driver is a 65 VW karmann Ghia and the 20 mile commute round trip has been doing damage since the road is very bad. I hope it does the Job.
You had me at hot dogs in bread slices
I would love an older car but the safety compared to newer cars is reason enough to not buy them for me.. sad tho, love the styling of 90' cars
Toyota Corolla one of the best Quality Japanese Car ever Japan produced!
I’m gettin a 1997 Toyota Corolla DX for 1000$ and miles are 228,995 is that worth the pay
If it's not rusty or crashed, that's an excellent deal, those older Corollas had a timing belt, so check to make sure that was done on time, chains started in 98 (atleast in the US)
I have a 95 DX... with 277k going strong. Paid $2700 like 13 years ago.
Man I bought one of these new in 98 as a 20-year-old. I was looking for a used Tercel and the salesman walked me over to the new side and after a test drive I was sold. Great car brand new - great car now. I wish I still had it ;-(
@James Hicks i have a 1998 toyota corolla VE vintage edition model no power windows no clock no arm rest no speakers no steering wheel adjustement. .Luxourous edition has arm rest and power windows clock and adjustement steering wheel

I'm about to buy a 66k mile 98 LE for $1750. In 2021. Insanity
Only 464 views?! Damn buddy I'm liking for the "Not blow a rod *COUGH* bmw" xD
i really want to buy a 99 with a 5 speed manual and in black with grey interior but its so hard to find... Its worth it though for that mpg and reliability !!
I have 98 1.8 L . i just learned their notorious for bad rings. burn oil. ruin cats and sensors and evap cans. thats what mine is doing. but i've read that if you replace rings ,their good.
🛑 What about 1.6 mechanic is it durable too? I have no idea what kind of corolla it is but it has rounded headlights 😅 the major problem is only oil burning and rings ? Thx
Es increíble las millas que aguantan estos vehículos
I got really exited, i thought the motor might be swapped.. But no.. It's the Non-VVTi version of the 1zzfe 1.8ltr that you can tell by the Aluminum intake vs the Plastic intake on the VVTI 1zzfe, and yet still not the 1zzfeD that was in the MR2 Spyder or the Celica GT that used forged crank and rods.. But that motor is still a good motor, assuming you change the oil every 3k miles, otherwise get ready to be doing piston rings around the 200K mile mark as the piston rings were junk from the factory on these engines..
I have a 1998 same color. No drive or reverse? Mechanic said is the transmission. Do you think he might be right or do you think is something else.
Absolutely you should, I found one with 59k miles 😎
I had a 99 Corolla LE & I regret selling it. I now have a 98 Ford Ranger
How many liters of automatic transmission oil carry the 1994 Toyota Corolla when making the change is serious if it exceeds the level
How do u call the plastic on the trunk the one that líne up on top .. I have one a 2000 , 149 k miles, I got it when I was 17 113 k miles now I’m 22 149 k and this car is amazing worth the 2 k I pay for it .. but yeah how u call the plastic that goes on trunk it’s kind of old and when rains water comes inside
Depending on what part you are talking about, "Trim" and "Weather stripping" would be my assumption if water is getting in. Good luck!
maybe the "spoiler" like the sporty japanese cars like to use.
I put a touch screen in mine 😂. I ended buying the wrong speakers so I never got to listen to music but soon!
I have a 2010 keep fixing keep going
My car has been stuttering when I accelerate. There are no codes and I've clean that m a p sensor and it doesn't make a difference. Could it be my fuel injectors or spark plugs? It does kind of have a rough idle and it said that around a thousand RPMs on start. But I'm more concerned about the stuttering when I press on the gas and is happening more frequently now. Can you help I don't want my Corolla to die. Thank you and any suggestions will help. And great review of the 98. I actually have that exact same one you have in the video
Replace injectors, spark plugs, plug wires, check your fuel pump and fuel filter too.
I’m moving from LA to NYC, was going to sell my 98 Corolla CE very good condition maintained religiously. 140k miles. For $2,500. My buddy and I were gonna road trip there in his newer car, but he’s flaked on me so I’m thinking of just driving it there and keeping it for ever. I’m gonna stretch it out over two weeks, you think it’s worth it and will it be ok doing the long distance? Sounds dumb after watching your great review of the car lol
How did it go
I'm late but if you're still considering it.
I got my Corolla from a gentlemen that worked in Washington and Maine , he would fly one way, then buy a car and drive it back Midwest to sell.
So I'd say if its in good shape absolutely.
@@-g.k.4389 he probably got stranded
@@BlackAxe101 hey thanks! Ended up not working out and did SF instead, stayed for 6 months.. now I’m driving it to go work in Montana this coming Tuesday! Haha got a tent as well so will camp from LA to West Glacier..
I have the 1997 model I think it’s just as good in reliability
I don't dislike the 96-97 Corolla, but the timing belt is what gets me. Most customers won't be able to budget that into their life, and when it breaks it's a lot for the average person. But if you stay on top of that timing belt absolutely that car will go just as long! I recommend the 98-02s because they only need cheap oil changes and the occasional brake job. They'll outlast us all.
How many miles do y’all usually get ? Or how many gallons does it take ?
Talking about miles to the gallon? 30-33 average, but on long highway trips 38 was the record on this particular car.
I have a 2001 that’s in mint condition with only 98,170 on it.
What is the engine code for the 1.8l
1 bought a '98 in 2015 with 36,500 miles on it for $6,000. Definitely one of the best purchases I have ever made. Does anybody have a recommendation for a cell phone holder? I bought the vent-style kind, but couldn't get it to stay attached.
I wrestled with this too if you have an aftermarket radio with cd player I ended up with a Schoche cd magnetic mount perfect distance to steering wheel I use my phone for navi and music so I never look at the radio covers it depending how big your phone is.
I have a 97 corolla 303k miles. And wow fkn mint 36k long life ahead for your corolla once I’m ready to upgrade I’ll look for a 98-02 or 2012 and up depending on price like those 2012s too
My 1998 Corolla has a bent rod in the #2 cylinder. I'm a college student who has been waiting for finals to end so I can source a junkyard engine to inspect and install! Any advice you can give to me for the process?
music volume in the background is too hi we can hardly hear you. mix it better, lower the music.
i just got a 96 that im in the process of restoring it has the 1.8 engine do i also have a timing chain instead of a belt?
Nope you have the 7afe engine which has a timing belt.
@@Evo8mr06 oh well wishful thinking i was told to do the timing belt at 100,000 miles i only drive like 10 miles a day so i have some time
@@michaelsisk7875 At least it's a non interference engine. So no big deal if the belt does snap.
@@Evo8mr06 thank you i appreciate that
Bro, I am planning to buy 2000 corolla ve manual transmission 123k ..please suggest me..car looks very clean , i am not a mechanic please tell your opinion
Buying one tomorrow ,2000 Toyota Corolla LE with 188.765 the dealership is asking 2900.00 I'm going to bargain him down . what would you pay for it .? It's in good condition outside and in no rust and paint is good . thanks 👍🇨🇦
lol u should see my 98 corolla, but im having relay problems adding led, gonna need independant relays for each led add on, its stance mode, maan. just added a rear defuser and eliminated the rear bumper cover... u got the right valve head, not tooo many corollas have the 16valve cover, those are the right heads to race w/ max 800hp
🛑 What about 1.6 mechanic is it durable too? I have no idea what kind of corolla it is but it has rounded headlights 😅 what is it's major problems? Thx
thanks for the vi.. i go the exact same car and i wanna ask you if you know that problem i have cince one week: when the car is stop and i shited from park to reverse it makes a little cluanking sound .. can i still roll with it like is it dangerous to roll with it or it is ok to dont repair it now ?
Yeah mines like that too you should check the fluid if transmisiion fluid is good mostly likey its the transmission/motor mount hitting each other when car shifts, mines doing that for a while i never adressed it and it did not get worse. However main concern is this piece of shit car is talking oil eveey day i had to add quarts and quarts and looses power sometimes
2:33 in and I’m crying 😂
