I got a Toyota celica automatic, 1995 st, can’t hear it run. It’s got the carrola engine. Over 300,000 miles still runs great. Oil is clean, no smoke. Love it.
I had a 1965 Ford pickup. A lot of people thought it was an automatic until they got confused by the clutch pedal on the floor. Most people these days never have seen a 3 on the tree shifter.
Manuel is the Mexican gardener that takes care of your flowers. Manual is the (standard) shift transmission in your car. Vanna White sold you the wrong vowel.. lol
When we lived in San Diego in 71 our friend carted us around in an old '49 ford truck that had a bad starter. He would park it on a hill so he could pop the clutch in low gear to start it. Took a trip to Tijuana, Mexico in it once and parked it on a level street. We had to bodily push it so he could pop the clutch.
I have an 07 Corolla, my kid has an 04. And even my coworker bought an 06xrs Corolla. All of them have at least 200k miles on them and never have problems, thanks Scotty!
In the 1990’s I made Shift Handles for 8th Gen Corolla the QC was seemingly ridiculous BUT now nearing30 years later I have Never seen a used roller with the rubber stuff blistered, cracked ,chipped or peeling off …and I am a proud owner of a 99 w 175k Roll On !!!
How ironic that I watched the manual Mazda video earlier today and you mentioned it in this video. I love my Scion xB, per your recommendation. For a 2005, it's super reliable and fun to drive with a manual transmission. Thanks, Scotty!
Scotty been watching your videos for years appreciate your advice although I don't always follow it I have two sons their first cars were standard Transmissions on purpose my father always told me if you can drive a standard you can learn to drive anything and I live by that
So I got an 07 Corolla sitting outside. A blue one too. Mine's an automatic though. the vehicle is easy to upgrade the interior which is what I did with mine. I put in an interior floor led strip kit, a dash cam, alexa auto, and an android auto multimedia reciever with a windshield phone holder. I was doordashing with it, I actually profit off the doordash gas reimbursement, the car gets 35 mpg at worst and 40 highway at best. That's a 13 gallon tank, that puts 500 miles in the tank. I drive 100 to 200 miles a day because the area I'm dashing in is rural. I get 1 dollar per mile which is around 31 dollars profit from doordash per gallon. If you have a high efficency car like the 07 corolla, you should doordash with it as a side hustle.
My parents bought a new 06 Toyota Corolla (same generation) with the 5-speed manual, they used it to commute to LA for about 8 years racking up 195k miles, then sat in the driveway for long periods of time but occasionally still drove it, I turned 18 in 2016 and needed a car for college so my dad attempted to teach me manual while learning how to drive, and I learned and so the 2006 Toyota Corolla became my 1st car! It had 203k miles when given to me, I drove the car throughout my 4 years of university along with taking it on many many long drives and road trips and never left me stranded, I put 120k miles on it!!!! During my ownership though I needed to get a new clutch at 210k miles, alternator at 250k miles and starter at 275k miles but that’s it! Impressive for an over 200k mile car!!!!! At 320k miles though and 4 1/2 years of ownership I crashed it though unfortunately…but my parents definitely said that car lasted far far far longer then they ever imagined so definitely was worth their money when buying it back in 06 and lasting 14 years with 320k miles lol
I learned to drive in a late 1950's era Willy's Jeep truck. It had 2 sticks one for shifting gears other to engage 4 wheel drive. No power steering etc. It was built like a tank! Plus it had a snow plow with its sticks. I tore up the country lawn alongside the dirt drive but it was fun and hilarious.
Yep had an 03 Corolla automatic. Best cheap car ever. Nothing broke Nothing fancy it just (worked). Sad day when it got in an accident cost too much to fix.
Try double clutching a rig, trained on those when I was going for my class A license. The instructor would put his coffee on the dashboard, the new guy who knocked it off would sit the bed bay all day and not drive. The bed wasn't very comfy I confess
I was selling a Toyota truck a while back so on the test drive the buyer comes up to a red light on a hill and holds the clutch half way out so the truck doesn't roll backwards..I said put the clutch in and THE BREAKS ON..He said that's the way my father showed my how..I said if you want the clutch to last don't ever do that..He bought the truck..Some people have no common sense..
I have a pristine 1994 Corolla GTouring wagon, JDM, well kept, with 11,000 kilometers on it. Like new. It was kept garaged, driven once or twice a year in Japan. The car sold at the auction there for a few grand. A few more to ship to Hawaii. It has a 1500 engine, automatic trans.... gets 50mpg ! I couldn't believe it. Not a lot of power but zips along at the speed limit. No trouble registering, but because RHD (right hand drive) I had to insure it at $15000 for replacement value to keep the policy premium down around $50/mo. PS: I hear that not all mechanic shops will service RHD... good thing this is like new 😅
The same thing happened to me. I bought a 2015 automatic corolla with 126,000 back in 2020 for $7000 got rear ended this year and got $12,000. I made 5 grand in two years!
I’m torn between these two options… Civic hatchback 6 speed manual with the naturally aspirated 2.0 or a Base Camry LE 4 cylinder? Both being new and not taking into account the Camry is slightly more. Decisions decisions. I’m looking for a reliable non turbo new vehicle under 30k.
Even cars that have all their hubcaps I end up putting a set on to save the stocks for when I go to get something else. Having the original hubcaps on anything is kind of a novelty
I was considering getting a small old pickup and I notice the manual ones are quite cheap. I don't know how to drive manual but I may be willing to learn since Scotty says manual transmissions are pretty much bulletproof.
I drove a 2000 Camry for 12 years and then a 2000 Corolla afterwords for four years and they both had 5 speed manual transmissions. They were absolutely fun to drive. That’s the only way I could afford a Camry.
I drive an 18 speed, but when I tried to drive a five speed car, I have no idea how to shift a five speed. But I have no problem driving an 18 and 13 speeds semi trucks.
2007 was a really weird year for cars So many companies switching to garbage designs and laughably bad decisions for parts, but then you get stuff like this
Speaking of Toyota Corollas there is a Toyota Corolla for sale in a suburb in Sydney get this it has 987000 kms on it and l have seen photos of it and its straight looks good and the engine looks good to and it is $5000aud
Scotty: you have a Mazda Miata? I used to curse those cars when they got in front of me - i couldn’t see around them! . . . . . . I was driving a Pontiac Fiero.
Scotty, after you fix the exhaust leaks, if the catalytic converter light (or the indicator for it) is still on, you can't get an inspection sticker! So you have an economical 2007 standard-shift Corolla (cheap to buy and run) but the state won't let you drive it without replacing the catalytic converter (and perhaps some other related parts). Would you replace the cat converter on this car if it costs a lot? Is there a way around doing that? In RI for example!
Here in south Africa, people are either Toyota or vw fanatics. I grew up with the former...first a 1984 corolla ke70, then a 1988 corolla Twincam 4age, then a 20v 4age corolla...then a 2zzge . so safe to say, I'll always have a Toyota in the garage lol.
Back in the day(1990's)...my co worker at Goodyear called them "Yotas", he was a Master Toyota tech, so yeah go with" Masta Yota" for a well built little car. ( Laughing Donkey meme her).. lol
Idk I rode a kx80 when I was a kid before I legally drove any 4 wheel vehicle. So I had an idea how to modulate the throttle and clutch. So it didn’t take me long to zoom off in the 5 speed notchback foxbody 5.0 I traded my tricked out 1995 kx250 and $1000 for. Both the bike and car are RIP. I miss them both
I bought a standard as my s cond car. My dad said you bought get in and drive it home. It was a1970 VW beetle and that 4 speed was a dream to drive in summer but those heater boxes not so good
Toyota's seem to last forever, unless you neglect it. Great quality. I've seen several 90s Toyota's still driving around today and looking clean. The guy referred to in this video must be pretty satisfied.
nice Mercedes on your driveway, the best they ever made, the W124, A question please, Mercedes in the states are build in the states, was that the case of the Mercedes W124 in the old days or were they imported from Europe. I ask this because The Mercs in The states were not so well put together as here in Europe.
I had an 06 corolla put 60k miles on it and only changed the front brakes, tires and oil changes. $35 dollar fill up before the pandemic. Best first car and taught me a lot on how to maintain a car!
My sister needed another car because my two over 6 feet tall teenage nephews couldn't fit in the back seat of her existing car, so she bought a John Cooper Works Mini
He should make a racecar out of it. Run the American flyer 4cyl. class or whatever. My cousin ran that class in a chevy cavalier back in the day! Was a hoot!
Another great video.......but....... I want to know how long have you had that hooded Jean jacket???🤣 I had a few throughout the years that I loved but as my boys grew older they stole them from me.😡😡 They are great and will never go out of style. You look good in it Scotty!!👍👍🤣
I thought you were going t talk about Yugos and for pintos or what was my worst nightmare the Chevy Monza…what a mess . I’m having an issue with my Honda Fit Honda put a new clutch in and it didn’t work…they gained up on me claiming it was my falt….I called the CEO and asked if he had been driving stick for over 35yrs. 15 in that very care…would you accept these results from your mechanic.…or the mechanic did that to your wife or daughter. So they “fixed” it and it’s still not right. It works most of the time but it just not right…I don’t know if thy necked the master or slave cylinder. Honestly if they just fain interest in what they’re doing.
This video feels like I just saw an ex girlfriend that got away. I both a brand new 2007 stick shift that I loved but for some reason my dumb butt trade it in for a Hyundai a few years later. Letting her go is one the worst decision I’ve ever done 😢
2600$ the insurance company ripped off the public to make up for being so called generous. Should have offered 300 cash or contract it out to a buffer expert for the same price.
I had to learn on a stick, The drawbacks are that they really suck in traffic and they are not completely maintenance free the clutch will wear out multiple times during the car‘s life and it’s really not that cheap to get fixed unless you do it yourself.
what if you live in NYC, is it still worth the hassle to learn and own one ? I plan on getting a car in the future and I've kind of been obsessed with manual transmissions and realized how fun they are. But I don't want to ignore the potential appeal being just a honeymoon phase with the stop and go traffic. Thoughts?
Sounds like my story. 1994 Corolla. I made more off of it than I spent on it new!! Two wrecks neither my fault, had it for about 15 years. And it was still running after I got a new one.
This Corolla in Manual is real Gem and much more fun than it looks, zippy and nimble , that 1zz is fun to ring out. I drive Toyota 86 so I have it good on my end too
A friend of my daughter backed into her 92' manual Nissan Stanza when she was in high school 20 years ago. The insurance company gave us a check for $2500, for damage to the hood and grill. We used a bungee cord to keep the hood closed and used the money to buy our 3 teenage girls a second car/ a used Camry for them. We were going to need to get a second car for our girls anyway since the oldest one was leaving for college. The youngest ones didn't mind driving the damaged Stanza. My kids were pretty low maintenance.
I saw an early 90s Corolla on the street recently. It still looked new. It was probably garage kept and driven little but still, a lot of other cars won't last that long even if you keep them in the garage and maintain them fanatically.
Much respect to people driving well maintained and groomed old cars regardless of age and model. Beater is a state of mind. You can tell a lot about people by how presentable or lousy their car looks and runs. If you can't afford maintaining a car, either work harder or get a bike. Even when I was younger going to school and working at a Pizza Hut, no way was I rolling in a rinky-dink rust bucket. It was my first car, an old 2nd hand corolla, parts are cheap not replace what needed to be replaced and me and a friend did the paint, interior was well kept. Put on some nice aftermarket second hand eBay rims and had it lowered. It wasn't fast but it was always fresh, clean and reliable. It was efficient and got me to places on a cheap. A lot of DIY work, it started my education in cars. I took care of it so it took care of me, never let me down not even once.
For me personally I prefer a standard transmission. I learned on and got my license in a 5 speed manual transmission with a 1.8 liter. My original clutch lasted 274,000 miles and I've roasted more than my fair share of rubber off the tires. I'd personally take a stick over an automatic any day. Thank you Scotty for giving us the truth and helping people out. ❤️
Same, been driving manual transmission since I was 16 and I’m almost 30 and have zero interest in “driving” and automatic. Heck I even get excited at work when I get to drive the toro workman 3-speed golf carts 😂
@@21DaHoagie12 likewise. I originally learned to drive on all the dirt roads when I was 11 or 12. Needless to say I got my license on the first try. I learned how to drive years before and automatics just don't feel right to me. Not having a clutch is practically a foreign thing to me. Lol.
@@josephtrunk3565 I'm lucky not to have arthritis but I was driving my econobox manual after knee surgery after the two days it took to stand and hobble to the car on crutches. That's how light the clutches are. The pain killers may have helped too.
My dad was a die hard Toyota guy. He was sold on the Toyota engine when he bought a 1987 Chevrolet Nova that was built with a Toyota engine. The more I watch your videos I am convinced that Father knew best about Toyotas
My mom bought an '85 Nova bare bones NO option's even had an AM radio. in '92 when I got my license I inherited the car. Once i got the engine tuned up and the oil changed (which I don't think had ever been done) and had a half decent stereo put it in it ran great. The car got me through college at one point I was putting 1000 miles a week on it and it just ran without complaint. Still the BEST snow car I've ever had. I've owned 4 cars, 3 of them have been some variant of the Corolla.
For most of my childhood, my grandpa worked for a Toyota dealership as the service manager. All but 1 of my cars have been Toyotas. The non Toyota was the biggest mistake of my life.
I'm pushing 60. As a kid, we weren't allowed to apply for our learner's permit unless we could drive a manual. (Dad's rules). I learned on an old Plymouth wagon with a "three on the tree". While most of my CARS have been automatic (A few big Buicks over the years), My trucks have been manual. No frills and mechanical simplicity is what I look for in a truck (and THAT'S getting harder to find...).
I have a 04 vibe with the 1zz-fe and it's literally outlasted every single other vehicle i have ever owned, and it's so easy to work on it taught me so much about doing my own maintenance. Plus in the winter with some good snow tires I'm passing big gass guzzler SUVs and trucks who are stuck. Plus having the hand e break it makes for a fun durable car.
My grandparents neighbor had a Corolla that looks like that, but it was an 05' model year and it had a beige exterior color. I would visit her sometimes since I was little, and she loved daily driving it a lot!! Unfortunately she sadly passed away at 84 years old after she had a stroke this year. It also means that her Corolla ended up on sale after it had about 430k miles, and her daughter and one of her family members were planning on moving there, but didn't feel comfortable anymore. Unfortunately the house was sadly taken down a couple months after she passed away :((

My Dad trained myself to Drive on a. 73 f100 explorer 3 on the tree ford pickup..
Me, living in LATAM where 99% of us have manual xD how do u even drive an automatic
My first car was three on a tree that's how I Learned to Drive
@@brianmorris2841 mine too. A POS 1970 Maverick base with no options AT ALL. $250
I haven't seen Scotty this happy since he last drove the 94 Celica.
@Paul Boden I thought it was just me, he was overly happy in that Toy! It was the shifting, Scotty should've been a race car driver! ;-)
It's joy and happiness all together!!!!
It's true
shoulda tried a 74 celica
I agree. Toyotas are absolutely golden from 1999-2006. Always a smart buy!
I just bought this same car a few months ago because of Scotty's channel. I haven't driven a manuel in years but it was kind of fun driving one again.

Manual transmission is the only way to really enjoy driving a car. I love a manual.
Yes, manual is perfect for anti theft lol
Depends on person, if someone wants a appliance, lacks coordination and understanding to drive fast, it's a headache.
Not if u love in Houston or the like had bad cramps before
Disagree. Overrated experience.

Scotty, that 1.8 engine you love is great, but i love that 2.2 Toyota had back in the 80's

The best anti theft device is a 3 on the tree😂👌🏻
But that's Rare these days. Last I drove was a Chevy truck.

A 90-93 Accord is the strongest vehicle lots still around at 250-300k plus miles
I love standard transmissions. Some cars are worth more as a manual. My Carrera is a prime example of this.
Back in the day(1990's)...my co worker at Goodyear called them "Yotas", he was a Master Toyota tech, so yeah go with" Masta Yota" for a well built little car. ( Laughing Donkey meme her).. lol
My first car at age of 16 was a standard transmission VW Bug and I didn't know how to drive a stick.
I miss them both
I can't believe I bought a used hilux with a 6 speed manual transmission in the Philippines bumper to bumper gridlock traffic. lol.
The guy referred to in this video must be pretty satisfied.
nice Mercedes on your driveway, the best they ever made, the W124,
A question please, Mercedes in the states are build in the states, was that the case of the Mercedes W124 in the old days or were they imported from Europe.
I want to know how long have you had that hooded Jean jacket???🤣
I had a few throughout the years that I loved but as my boys grew older they stole them from me.😡😡
They are great and will never go out of style. You look good in it Scotty!!👍👍🤣
I got an '09 with a quarter million miles, toughest car I've ever owned
Tie rap the hubcaps on.
2600$ the insurance company ripped off the public to make up for being so called generous. Should have offered 300 cash or contract it out to a buffer expert for the same price.
My 2014; Corolla started bubbling rust at. 3 years old and so it can still rust
I didn't have an automatic until I got so old I didn't want to shift anymore.
Resale of manual transmission performance cars is higher though. Enthusiasts want them.
“If you already know how to drive a car 🚗; u can drive a manual transmission…”. Girls 👧 burning out the clutches!
I had to learn on a stick, The drawbacks are that they really suck in traffic and they are not completely maintenance free the clutch will wear out multiple times during the car‘s life and it’s really not that cheap to get fixed unless you do it yourself.
wore out my knees with my Honda Accord 😒
Thanks scotty
what if you live in NYC, is it still worth the hassle to learn and own one ? I plan on getting a car in the future and I've kind of been obsessed with manual transmissions and realized how fun they are. But I don't want to ignore the potential appeal being just a honeymoon phase with the stop and go traffic. Thoughts?
You just said it. It's a hassle. Coming from another New Yorker. But you won't mind it at all if you enjoy driving.
"Manual" transmissions aren't "Standard" anymore.
That right there is my kinda deal man.
Sounds like my story. 1994 Corolla. I made more off of it than I spent on it new!! Two wrecks neither my fault, had it for about 15 years. And it was still running after I got a new one.
Scotty, is that a Mercedes diesel wagon in the background? Yours?
Wow, Scotty got a Yugo?
This Corolla in Manual is real Gem and much more fun than it looks, zippy and nimble , that 1zz is fun to ring out. I drive Toyota 86 so I have it good on my end too
My first car had a manual transmission. It was easy to learn to drive.
What that guys name Lucky I never get a deal like that wow Scotty
Good afternoon Scotty, hope you and yours are doing great today BROTHER! 🧰🙌👍
Dang, the guy is lucky and smart.
I have a 2006 vibe and this car still gets hard like an 18 year old.
287k
Didn't think Scotty was a Toyota fan.
the 9th gen corolla is also sooo cute uwu
What is the Mercedes Wagon doing in your Driveway ?
Manual trans here in japan is still high 😂
Ohayou gozaimasu
..was Whitney from Houston? "..Houston, I think we have a Problem." 😂💥😳🤏
Smart man !😊
Well brought up no doubt. :-)
Well that worked out nicely
How ghetto.. why didnt you just get a damn job
Those stanzas were solid and bullet proof.
I saw an early 90s Corolla on the street recently. It still looked new. It was probably garage kept and driven little but still, a lot of other cars won't last that long even if you keep them in the garage and maintain them fanatically.
It's because people are fanatics about corollas.
I’ve got a ‘99 that I had to shape up a lotta rust on, but it still looks great and runs fine
Fun to see Scotty do the neutral jiggle. I bet even racecar drivers jiggle the shifter, “just to be sure”. 😂
omg the horror of the accidental startup lurch & stall w the alarms jingling
Always
Lol.
Manuals are great. As long as my arthritic knee isn’t acting out, I’m good. 267,000 mi. and going great on it.
Toyota is hard to beat. Especially the older ones. You can’t kill ‘em! Lol
I have a 1988 Nova Twin Cam -- the racy DOHC model.
@@tancar2004 Nothing makes a car run great like a half decent stereo
My 2005 vibe with the 1.8 5 speed is a blast to drive. I red line it all the time & she had never let me down. 293000 miles and still running strong
don't mistake that vibe's reliability for gm reliability though! just keep that in mind!
Keep an eye on oil consumptions...those 1zzfes had an issue with piston ring lands..
Unfortunately the house was sadly taken down a couple months after she passed away :((
Scottys the only mechanic I know that can say "behoove" and get away with it...
I had a commanding officer in ROTC who said it and got away with it too.
