I get offers from people who want to buy it all the time (I've kept it in an excellent condition), sometimes offering crazy amounts for it, but I simply can't bring myself to sell it since I know they don't make cars this reliable anymore.

2:59 Toyota had a 1AZ-FSE 2.0 4 cylinder engine they were using in the Avensis in Europe. That made about 147hp. My guess is that Toyota decided not to use that engine in the Corolla because it might have been more powerful than the larger Camry 4 cylinder.

Great cars but this generation Corolla burns TONS of oil just like the 2007-2011 Camry 4 cyl. These cars are one of the most reliable cars ever built but if you have to CONSTANTLY open the hood to check the oil level it defeats the purpose. I own a 2009 BMW with the inline 6 engine it has 200k miles, it obviously isnt as reliable or cheap to maintain as a Toyota but it was cheaper to buy AND doesnt even burn a drop of oil. Go figure.

The secret to all Toyotas reliability is they continue to perfect they don't just throw an engine away and start new. Models have issues along the way but in the next model year they perfect it.
I do think Toyota made a serious misstep with the tundra discontinuing the V8 and going v6 twin turbo.

Absolute worst Corolla generation. They were so bad Toyota cut it's production 2 years early. They have lots of problems, but the biggest one is they burn lots of oil as they age. The 7th gen Corolla before this generation and the 9th gen Corolla after this generation were very good and could easily last 300k-500k miles and that's why you see a price jump for the 7th and 9th gen Corollas compared to the 8th gen. The 8th generation ones are being sold cheap for a reason. You would be wise to avoid the 1998-2002 Corolla completely just get a 7th or 9th generation instead.

The 8th and 9th gen corollas have the same engine and they all burn oil if you don't use a PAO full synthetic. Oil control rings get gummed up and can't do their job. Most of the newer cars today become oil burners because the oil is too thin and isn't high quality enough.

    • @Prepare2Survive

@@imzjustplayin For the 9th generation Corolla they updated the pistons to include extra oil return holes behind the oil control ring which solved the oil burning problem.

@@imzjustplayin Any car can if the oil isn't changed often enough. Here's a list that shows the change in pistons.
      1. 1998-2002 Corollas and Prizms (8th Gen) using older metal intake 1ZZFE engines WILL burn oil. This is true regardless of the transmission, whether they have VVT-i, or whether they receive good maintenance. Eventually, they will burn excessive amounts of oil (1 quart in 500-1000) miles. This is also true for 2000-2002 Celica and MR2 models, though they use Japan assembled engines (also they got updated pistons during their production runs unlike 8th Gen Corollas).
      2. 9th Gen Corollas with average to good maintenance DO NOT burn oil. This is true regardless of year or transmission.
      3. All 9th Gen Corollas have different pistons than the 8th Gen Corolla. There were 5 total piston/ring combos. The production change was made as follows:
      8th Gen non VVT-I (08/1997 - 04/2000) - Piston 13101-22020 Rings - 13011-22040
      8th Gen VVT-I (05/2000 - 12/2001) - Piston 13101-0D040 Rings - 13011-0D010
      9th Gen 2003-2004 Early Rings (01/2002 - 05/2003) - Piston 13101-0D090 Rings - 13011-0D010
      9th Gen 2004-2005 Late Rings (06/2003 - 04/2005) - Piston 13101-0D090 Rings - 13011-0D090
      9th Gen 2003-2004 Late Pistons (05/2005 - 12/2007) - Piston 13101-0D091 Rings - 13011-0D090
