Luck must have been a factor in this horrific crash of the Irish man Derek Daly. Never saw this before as I was working, but I worked in CART for several years 1987 - 1992, and I am a race fan since 1967.
It was not career ending crash, despite him having a lot of fractures on this accident. He returned to Indycar racing in 87, and raced full time in CART until 1989. Also ran on the 24 Hours of LeMans in 88, 89 and 1990.
@@fedbet909 I've just listened to Derek on the radio here in Ireland and he spoke about this crash. Intensive care for 10 days, crushed left ankle, lost a toe, double broken tibia, broken femur, busted ribs & lacerated liver. Sure there was more!
According to his book, what saved him was John Paul Jr hitting his car as he was about to go back into the wall exposed-legs first because it knocked him down into the infield.
Near career-ending? You mean near life-ending.
"We will hold of on identification of the car" = "Not enough left of said car to even make a guess"
He looks like he may be dead, so we won't speculate...lol

Finally some high quality video of the accident, thanks for uploading.

Derek Daly...
A true Indycar racing legend...
That's why I'm a fan of his son Conner!
Hell yeah. Big fan. Hes a tough guy for sure
Derek Daly lives by the standard that Anything worth doing is worth doing right" as all his crashes are dramatic!! Tough guy.
Almost like Smiley's crash, how he survived is unknown but amazing

There were some monster crashes that race
Bob Jenkins, Larry Nuber
those cars look amazing
Michigan was a completely insane track for CART/IndyCars. They should never have raced there after 1981.
1:14 back in the primitive days when they wore rubber collars around their neck instead of HANS devices. The rubber collars didn't work.
Yeah true but better than nothing
Finally someone in heaven took his license to race....thousand of crashes over the years putting everybody in risk...
I'm enjoying a large "blunt" as this video plays.
Derek "The Crasher" Daly. His son is just as good as he was.
