I was 9 years old. We didn't have satellite tv in our house at the time. I watched this entire race in the sports section of a department store in my town. It was the only time I spent more time in the shop than my mother. This race alone made me fall in love with CART.
That Ben Edwards never got the F1 commentary gig is a travesty! Easily the best commentator of the 2000s. Probably in the top 5 commentators of all time in sports. Instead we had to suffer through James Allen. Considering him and Ted's background, its no surprise that they shafted their way into the spotlight
*WOW! Montoya = BEAST!* At first i thought the back-marker 'yellow car' was going to get in the way. But Montoya was actually able to pick up a little bit of tow. *Amazing!*
Michigan was a clue that in the days when the IndyCar ran was full of emotion. How can we forget the duels in the final laps of Scott Pruett x Al Unser Jr. in 1995, Tony Kanaan in his mythical victory in 1999 (thanks to drought Crash Max Papis in the last meters) where by millimeters Montoya won in 2000 this duel Montoya x Andretti in 2003 and already in IRL the duel between Hornish Jr. and Alex Barron. Track that left longing and deserved return to the calendar of the current Indy.
H4nnub4l I'll 2nd that ! Ben is such great talent when it comes to calling awesome moments like this ! To be able to stay that excited and keep all of those words coming through crystal clear is not easy !!
Quite simply, the greatest race, simply fizzing with brilliance. Enhanced by the commentary, if you want a soundtrack, try More Than a Feeling by Boston.
That's what they do for a living. I don't think we can call them stupid but rather we have to admire them. As a spectator, I appreciate the drivers who are willing to take risks to win; not just because of the show the put on, but because the courage they show is inspiring. If no driver took risks, racing would be a very boring sport.
There was no DRS or Kers. It sems like the solution for today is what use to be done on the past. F1 is great but it could work if they look back on F1 or even Cart, Indy and etc. Great video. Amazing.
I agree. I've been watching F1 for a while. Quite rare to see this kind of competitive racing in F1. I think it's partially due to regulations frowning upon any extreme racing for "safety reasons" and give out penalties for maneuvers that might seem like fair racing. Another reason I guess is because of the whole "oval" versus "circuit/road" courses debates.
Epic race, Montoya is on of best drivers ever in world. Only I noticed how the guy in car in front of them felt, i bet he was shaking because these two gone beserk in matter of car speed just on his tail .)
Damn, that literally sent chills down my spine. Absolutely spectacular, given some time, i think indycar racing can get back to this and over take nascar as far as on track quality of racing. It wont be hard with the crappy racing nascar has put forth recently. The indy 500 this year was one of the best i'd seen in almost 10 years. More of those type races and my loyalties will quickly shift from nascar to indycar.
I saw this live. Just after the commentary on the vid stops, I think Jeremy Shaw chuckled and said "If you've seen a better motor race than that, I want to hear about it". No one had.
@MissEgasMoniz That's inaccurate actually. He dominated road courses through the 90's more then he ever did ovals. Yes Montoya is a great driver, that's undeniable. However, in this race that lapped car made all the difference for Montoya to gain the little draft he needed to win by a nose. Also, while F1 has great drivers, I wouldn't say all the best drivers in the world are there.
Notice when Max broke, they didn't throw the yellow and ruin the race like IRL and the rum runners would have. THOSE were the days of CART! The pinnacle of ALL motorsports. 230MPH super speedways, 200MPH road courses.
@dfp2101 There is NO way that anybody would lift in an ideal situation for the win. He was wishing that backmarker stays in his path and not Andretti's. Awesome race!
Michigan Raceway is where Mansell set the fastest average lap 340 km or something like that. Going that fast and bumping wheels is insane. That's staring death in the face.
Yes you are so right that's why after the split in 1996 with in three years of CART 3 people died 1 on an oval 1 on a street course and 1 on a road course and it took 16 years of mostly oval racing in IRL to reach the same numbers. you are so right in saying ovals are so much more dangerous.
Yeah, i remember that day, it was halloween.
This was probably one of the best indycar finishes ever.
the
De todo el automovilismo!!

SALUDOS desde Colombia!!! 🎉❤
The commentary was so good that in France, Eurosport used the UK commentary for the highlights

This is years later, but listen to the passion in the Colombian commentary, it's legendary.
That is such an epic finish. The golden days of CART. Thanks for uploading!
The narrator almost having a cerebral vascular accident... great days of CART
The colombian narrator in colombian TV almost had a hearth attack.
F1 wants JPM Back
*WOW! Montoya = BEAST!* At first i thought the back-marker 'yellow car' was going to get in the way. But Montoya was actually able to pick up a little bit of tow. *Amazing!*
Exactly, the fockin' backmarker fucked Andretti over.
I think I have the whole race on VHS somewhere.Ben Edwards and Jeremy Shaw were a great commentary team.
This was a great time for F1 and Cart.
It's been 8 months. Still waiting for you to find that vhs
I have hundreds of recordings, and not really delved deep into the piles.
MirVids Happy delving, mate :)
I remember watching this and even though I'm a huge Andretti fan it was one of the most exciting finishes ever. CART....come back!
By far the best Indy finish race ver.
Michigan was a clue that in the days when the IndyCar ran was full of emotion. What a unespected final!! great win by Juan Pablo Montoya :D
The man with no fear
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic finish! From 96 to about this time is my favorite era of indycar. Especially the look of the Reynard chassis!
Incredible!!! Great Montoya!
Ben Edwards should be knighted for his services to motorsport
H4nnub4l I'll 2nd that ! Ben is such great talent when it comes to calling awesome moments like this ! To be able to stay that excited and keep all of those words coming through crystal clear is not easy !!
They touch wheels!!
JPM got the slip stream of the car in front.
Quite simply, the greatest race, simply fizzing with brilliance. Enhanced by the commentary, if you want a soundtrack, try More Than a Feeling by Boston.
This never gets old. Great drivers, great cars and great racing.
Looks like he might have picked up some slipstream from the backmarker right at the end... Great racing!
Got to see that race live. Please Bring back CART AND INDY car racing in Michigan. Definitely best I've ever seen !
These boys earned their bread that day, and so did Ben Edwards!
Two legends who live on forever in the world of motorsports 🔥
Those were the glory days, saw 45 races there.
Freeze frame at 3:25
Montoya is a BEAST
The announcer is just as incredible as the finish. Love it!
I was 14 years old and still remember this race like it was yesterday
i miss this guy in F1
👍🏻👍🏻

How good was that! I miss having the Indycars racing at Michigan. Try and find racing like that in F1 or Nascar. Great stuff from 2 great drivers!
What an awesome piece of racing. Hell yeah!
Epic man...just epic.
ben edwards and jeremy shaw...the greatest commentary pairing that ever lived! no arguement!
toby moody and julian ryder a very clsoe second.....
mi papá desvarató la cama celebrando esa victoria tan tremenda
regresa a la F1 Juan Pablo
Respect for each other.

Gracias Tarso Marques!!
Andretti drove very dangerously at the end. Ir could have been a very nasty crash at the end. He squeased JPM.
some damn good racing and what a finish. good job JPM! the commentator was as excited as i was for a min there ...
Imagine how many wins he would have if he didnt go to F1
Definition of Motorsport!
What a relator Ben Edwards! worthy of a Latinamerican broadcast.
Fucking legendary, man.
Not a fan of american ovals without shifting, braking etc but this is probably the best finish of all time
Juan Pablo Montoya for ever. This guy not only won on Indi.He also won many races in formula one with Williams.
This commentary makes me shiver!
Great clean race for the lead and win. Epic finish.
Haha - still watching this video 3 years later...
Que hp final grande Montoya.
That was an amazing race.

Those were the days!!!!

Wow, Ben Edwards has the best screaming call ever! He should crank it more often!

UNBELIEVABLE
were they using the hanford devices for this race?
best time!
BRILLIANT! My HERO Juan Pab-Blo Mont-TOY-Ya wins again!!!
@xobrentox. MIS was bought in 1999 by ISC(owned by France family(NASCAR)) and announced that no more open wheel racing would be allowed after 2001.

Montoya deserved to win at least one F1 championship. I still hope he goes back.
GREAT commentary at the last !! ! :D !
Damn what a finish
That´s what I love about racing !
Wow great racing

Montoya 🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!!!
I'm here after the Verstappen/Hamilton finish in AbuDhabi
@dfp2101 There is NO way that anybody would lift in an ideal situation for the win. He was wishing that backmarker stays in his path and not Andretti's. Awesome race!
Michigan Raceway is where Mansell set the fastest average lap 340 km or something like that. Going that fast and bumping wheels is insane. That's staring death in the face.
IndyCar Michigan Oval, official avarge Q lap 388 km/h. Unofficial practic top speed 412 km/h. Gil deFerran 2002.

Montoya is the best
@zTheBigFishz
I wish I could give you a million thumbs up! You hit the nail on the head!
That is called racing.
