@@lutomson3496 You're actually wrong. The EcoDiesel comes from VM Motori, not Mercedes Benz. The 1st generation was to go into a European Cadillac but GM's 2009 bankruptcy cut it short. GM used to have a 50% stake in VM Motori.
I have a 15 eco diesel. I'm on the 4th complete SCR. The crankshaft sensor went at 45000 miles. Engine exploded at 66,000 miles. Just made the appointment for the recall on the high pressure fuel pump, and the next day, it started throwing the codes for the SCR again. I got the FCA lawsuit payout and every problem has been done under warranty. But enough is enough. When it gets fixed next week I'm selling it. I can't afford the continued emissions failures.
If RAM would make a long term investment and put a diesel in that’s one thing but just having this a few years and updating makes me feel like I’m not missing anything . The 5.7 or the 3.6 V6 options will both last longer than the truck. You can’t go wrong with that.
Love my stock 2014 with 140k of mostly reliable ownership. Having a single axle travel trailer this truck was a superior choice, no regrets. Just fell out of warranty. Plan on a delete. Satisfied with 3.0 power.
Emissions are the killer! I have a 16 limited use Amsoil signature series and use a bypass filter by Amsoil. So far so good! I do the the oil analysis and it’s perfect still
Yeah I work on these and bunch of engine issues with crank rod bearings, fuel system, egr cooler leaking, holes in intake. Etc. When these 3.0l fail they are expensive to fix.
I personally think a lot of people that bought these have never owned a diesel and treat them like a gasser. Diesels need warmed up and fresh clean diesel. Running around town not getting up to temp and never letting a full regen happen is probably most of it.
@@MattSmith-vl8zp thats exactly it. Early Gen 2 Ecodiesels did have crank and cam gear issues, but those were largely resolved by 2015. Ecodiesels last for a long while when properly maintained and are largely trouble-free.
@@MattSmith-vl8zp I have those gauges to show me when it's regenning the DPF. The truck's manual says the dash is supposed to have some indicator come up when it's regenning but I've never seen it. I could see how some people just aren't even aware of the regen and run into problems.
Hate the one we use. 210k on the clock, 2013. Things constantly broken. Have seen other locals with them lose the engine, one has caught fire twice. local dealer had replaced 7 engines last year, and I don't live in a densely populated area. Gets great mileage when it works.

My 2016 Laramie is at 113,000 and looks and works GREAT! I cannot believe how quiet and how strong it pulls. The detunes did affect they way you drive after that action. But once you adjust your driving to match the truck…all is good.
A buddy had the EcoDiesel in a Grand Cherokee and it was a nightmare -- in the dealer probably 10 times with engine problems. In the end it was something pretty simply to fix with the replacement of one item, but it took the dealer an eternity to get there. I guess if you get a good one, it's good.
I love my 2022 Jeep Wrangler with the ecodiesel. I love it. I guess I may have to keep it forever. I had one gas vehicle. Did not like it. Well I guess I will have to keep the old 5.9 Cummins around forever too. As I drive a lot of miles. Even in winter I still love the diesel
I wish I could get one of these I love the range on my BMW 328d. I usually get between 425-586 miles on 12-14 gallons. The one Ram dealer in town marks up their vehicles at least $6,000
I'm nervously waiting... The tone ring sensor (?) failed on the way home from an ECU update earlier this year but thankfully it was covered under some kind of factory extended warranty. They had to drop the transmission for that one. $$$.
The current EcoDiesel still has a throttle delay at tip in. They haven't found a way to adequately meet emissions standards without the ETC cutting power.
Loved my 15 til it spun bearings and is now a driveway paperweight. Oil analysis every 9k oil changes, then out of nowhere side of the road. Fiat is not releasing motors til January 23' what multiple dealers told me. Thanks Ram

Ecodiesels are dead because they make no sense when the price of diesel is $1.3 more, per gallon, than regular gas. I get 23 mpg in my eco diesel average over the last 24k miles. This is equal to 15 mpg regular gas in terms of cents per mile! Any regular gas truck with 15 or higher mpgs is cheaper to run! Even the big V8 gas is cheaper to run than this V6 diesel 3.0

@@MattSmith-vl8zp, I do too! But still you have to replace the fuel filter every second oil change and then you have the DEF cost, on top of the extra $1.3 per gallon of fuel. But the Duramax is also a good engine and now seems to be the only one left if you want a diesel.
I would have really wanted to see a jeep wagoner or grand wagoner diesel. But looks like that’s not gonna happen anymore.
Stelantis, if you’re reading this, you must have had your reason to drop the eco-diesel, but it was such a good engine and smooth ride.
30 to sometimes even 33 mpg..(the way I drive)!!!
Did a green diesel tune on my dodge sprinter and its the best I have done to it with no more egr problems still passes emissiions in the state I live in
Still rocking my 2015 ECO @ 220,000. Running like a top with a lot of love invested.
Is it stock? Any deletes?
Define "love" because I got 340k from a V6 Toyota and beat the piss out of it daily, and only did oil changes every 3k, plugs every 100k, water pumps every 100k, and exhaust manifold gaskets, once..
Love my EcoD. Smooth ride, lots of power, and great fuel economy.
It’s actually the 2nd Gen Andre. The 1st Gen was essentially a prototype for Cadillac that never actually went into production.
you do know dodge had the 3 liter diesel out when they were partnered with Mercedes in 2007 so I dont know where you got the Caddy relationship...and they copied the Merc for their design...
It has 110,000 miles and is actually the best riding and driving truck I have ever owned. Averages 24 to 27mpg and I will miss that but warranty expires at 120,000 and next summer .
I love my ecodiesel. Fast as hell. Put a tune on it and it’s the best value for dollar
I love the longer beds on these trucks.
To my eye they look better than the 5' beds, but there's a noticeable difference in parking lot maneuverability.
Emissions are the killer! I have a 16 limited use Amsoil signature series and use a bypass filter by Amsoil. So far so good! I do the the oil analysis and it’s perfect still
I had a 2017 ram ecodiesel and tuned it because of the tip in was so bad the tuned helped and was a fun truck after that.
I just put it back into stage 0.5 and it makes a remarkable difference.
Does it have a timing belt or a chain?
I think chain not 100 on that
I think chain not 100 on that
Talk to a Ram dealer service tech about the Ecodiesels. Lots of problems.
Yeah I work on these and bunch of engine issues with crank rod bearings, fuel system, egr cooler leaking, holes in intake. Etc. When these 3.0l fail they are expensive to fix.
Not the Gen 3's that came out in 2020
I personally think a lot of people that bought these have never owned a diesel and treat them like a gasser.
For whatever reason the regen invariably starts whenever I'm about a mile from home so I need to either idle it a bit when I get home or do a lap.
They didn't start putting this engine in the trucks until 2014. You must have a prototype.....
@@jonnantau9354 Fat fingered for 14 but yes. Thanks for the laugh this morning
Got 650 000 km with my first engine towing about 10 000 pounds daily and wasn't one for regular maintenance lol great engine to bad for the the end of the best ram
Yeah can y'all hire this Toby(i) guy because dude's voice is so smooth lol
I'm available for voiceovers, LOL!
My 2016 Laramie is at 113,000 and looks and works GREAT! I cannot believe how quiet and how strong it pulls. The detunes did affect they way you drive after that action. But once you adjust your driving to match the truck…all is good.
I think I would stick with the Diesel and leave the electric to the wall sockets. lol
Absolutely love my Eco in my Jeep Rubicon. Sad to see it go. The MPG and power...and off road are Absolutely Awesome.
@@TobyDallas Jeep has the Gen 3. 80% redesign from other generations.
@@cleveland53015 his was a mid-10's model, so would that have been the Fiat diesel instead of the VM Motori diesel I have, I think.
I see about 600 miles range on a full tank, I hear the DT generation you can get ~1,000 miles with the larger fuel tank. That's pretty awesome.
proud ex-owner of a 2014 ecodiesel.. yes great gas mileage, but thats about it.. fixing anything on that engine is 2-5k... nightmare..
I'm nervously waiting... The tone ring sensor (?) failed on the way home from an ECU update earlier this year but thankfully it was covered under some kind of factory extended warranty. They had to drop the transmission for that one. $$$.
The tone wheel goes out than it's 3k to fix at the shop plus the intake is bad for busting
The current EcoDiesel still has a throttle delay at tip in. They haven't found a way to adequately meet emissions standards without the ETC cutting power.
Bummer. Have you tried the Chevy in comparison?
Used a Sprint device and no lag now on my 21 Limited eco diesel…..works great
I love mine at 247568 on my 2015
Nice!
Loved my 15 til it spun bearings and is now a driveway paperweight. Oil analysis every 9k oil changes, then out of nowhere side of the road. Fiat is not releasing motors til January 23' what multiple dealers told me. Thanks Ram
Yeah I'm a tad nervous, and with the air suspension starting to get finicky I might trade out. A suspension delete / change to coils would be cheaper, though.
Pedal monster would help mediate the throttle top in. EPA fascists committed to hamstringing US energy and Diesel engines in particular. They’re coercing Americans to accept unproven EVs.
The gauges turned off as you zoomed in.
Why do you always have to put your hands on the paint??
The Ecodiesel will continue on in the Jeep Gladiator. Jeep isn't dropping it.
Very clean for 7 year old truck
Thanks, but the camera was pretty kind in this one!
Should film more in that location what a backdrop
TFL does a few video right there.
Fully delete it and the truck is much more reliable
No 0-60mph? Come on Toby!
My '15 ED 0-60 about 1 light year
@@chrisheffner3024 😂 just curious compared to factory specs when someone claims a performance/tune improvement where is the pudding?? High 7/Low 8 seconds in a lot of magazine/UA-cam testing
@@GarcBomber Seriously the initial turbo lag off the line was borderline unsafe. Part of the reason I got rid of mine. my wife’s Hyundai Tucson felt like a jet.
I have a 2018 eco diesel. I have had way too many close calls driving around here in the Phoenix Metro area. The truck can’t even get out of its own way! But, with the proper maintenance being done, she is still chugging along with 81k on the odometer
@@chrisheffner3024 a good way to describe it. It scared me / I scared myself a few times when I first got it before I got used to the terrible initial acceleration. Our neighborhood comes out at a t-intersection onto a local highway with lots of traffic doing ~70, and crossing it can give a pucker moment if you don't goose the accelerator a bit first.
I would really like those trucks if the engine wasn't terrible. I just replaced 1 in a 18 with 38k.
I hear if you get a bad EcoDiesel you'll know it pretty early.
Rather have a 5.7 Hemi for reliability
Haha. The 5.7l Hemi has plenty of issues like the lifters eating cams
@@TheRamGuy yeah I have the 09 Hemi. 350,000kms haven't had any motor related issues. Beat it up everyday, don't idle it and change the oil every 5k. Love it
My 2010 5.7 best truck I've owned, much more reliable then the fords ive had especially the EcoBoost 3.5.
@@TheRamGuy My 5.7 HEMI is at 225k miles on the original camshafts. I change oil every 5k with 5w30, add a ZDDP additive, and rarely idle it. Though I have idled it for 30+ minutes on several occasions waiting on people for Facebook Marketplace sales.
What tune do you have? Please share! I know it’s controversial subject among different tunners…
It comes from MRTuning. I have the Stage 0.5 -- meaning, it's a bit less than true Stage 1, and is emissions compliant.
Ecohater here terrible platform horrible power seems to like to throw rods and have bearing failures
It's a FIAT fix it again Tony diesel.... too bad it wasn't a cummins. A cummins straight 6 would have been the bomb
Fair point
For now yes...at some point soon the price will be close to regular gas again.
That's why I traded mine in the platform just doesn't make sense pay for diesel, DEF and expensive oil changes in exchange for what? Gutless towing, not being able to pass on the freeway? I'm glad it gone
@@KennethLondon-ft9gw I do all my own oil changes. Like 80 bucks with filter
@@MattSmith-vl8zp, I do too! But still you have to replace the fuel filter every second oil change and then you have the DEF cost, on top of the extra $1.3 per gallon of fuel. And OEM fuel and oil filters are ridiculously expensive for no reason for the Ecodiesel. She’ll Rotella ain’t cheap either. And all that for what? Towing performance isn’t that much better if any at all
Baby Duramax is absolutely superior.
Those transmissions tho!👎
@@fireant1272 I haven't heard the 10-GM version is nearly as bad as the problems Ford's 10-speed has been.
As for me my six-speed bullet proof Tundra is all I need.
@@SuperSnakePlissken yeah I'm sure the fords are terrible! I like the zf8 in the Ram bullet proof.
@@fireant1272 I would not say that they are terrible but from what I've gathered their version of it hasn't been as reliable. What is so interesting is they developed the same transmission, and then Ford took it and tweeked it making it worse. They should have stuck with the original design that they worked with GM to make.
Andre told me the same thing. I haven't driven one but will check it out when this truck's time comes.
I have a 2022 Ram 1500 3rd gen ecodiesel and it has the same issues with the tune on it. Sluggish and powerless for several seconds until it spools up, its even worst if you have to hit the brakes to slow down for a turning vehicle then go to speed up it takes forever to accelerate again.
I had the same issue with my 2019 ford ranger till installed a 9drive pedal assist , really helps with the lag
Yeah, the lag is terrible, especially if you lose momentum. A couple of neighbors here have steep driveways -- I'll have to come to basically a stop to turn into them, and then getting the truck to even move uphill is a drag unless you floor it -- and then better watch out for fireworks!
Who made this engine.why they dont use Cummings engine.
Vm motori builds the engine. I’m sure they were chosen for price, packaging, performance reasons. I believe fiat has a stake in the company as well, which is prob a huge reason.
Relatively high mileage is 119k?
They were not known to be very reliable.
@@PlayWaves1 yeah I had heard about the emissions issues about the eco diesel I'm just wondering how Andre thinks 119k is relatively high mileage.
@@PlayWaves1 turbo diesels?? 😲 I thought "They were not known to be very reliable." is valid only for the dodge gas versions with the fancy fuel management system?
Yeah this is really high mileage for that gen engine. Surprised it hasn't spun a bearing yet.

Me with an 01 f150 at 200K+ 😐
I had a 2018. Its engine blew up at 109k kilometres. 9k over the warranty and therefore Dodge would not do anything for me. I am on the hook for all of it. They will give me 10k for a trade in. Eco Diesels blowing at 100k is a known problem. DO NOT BUY A DODGE anything. They do not help you out when it is their shitty problem. Class action time.
Diesels are made to be work horses not daily drivers of 20 miles/ short trips or in the city. If you drive a diesel less than 30 miles non stop your destroying the motors. People buy them for the mpg with no clue at all.
There very eco minded because they never run but when they do its good until they breakdown which happens alot
The air suspension will fail again 100%
168000 kilometres… BOOM mine blew up. Not worth the money
It's a fiat Fix It Again Tony engine that's the problem!
I drove a brand new ram 1500 with the ecodiesel and 3.92 gears early this year. I was not impressed. The thing drive like shit. Like he said it's nothing then everything. Very bad drive ability. This was a brand new truck too. I was literally the first customer to drive it.
This is the only one I have driven but I've heard it's typical. Not impressive, and why should you have to throw a tune kit on a brand new truck, right? That said, with the tune kit this truck becomes sweet to drive.
@@TobyDallas I totally agree. The fuel economy would be great but I'm the kind of guy that would drive stock until warranty is done. The stock ecodiesel would be unbearable for 60k miles. I have seen reviews of some tunes that really bring the truck around but it's just another hassle.
