Nice Review with real world wear and tear. I also have a 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie with the Ecodiesel. Currently I am over 248,000 miles (approximately 400,000 km), I had one EGR rebuild at about 105,000 mark, I agree about the cruise control button issue every once in a while (I just keep pressing the 4 buttons on the right side of the steering wheel in a clockwise fashion and then it kicks in), after getting constant punctures with the originals tires - I switched to the Michelin Defender LTX - no issues now, I change my engine oil every 10K, I replaced my struts and shocks after 240,000 miles, otherwise very hard to beat getting 27 to 29 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg around town. My goal - 500,000 miles.
Fellow Canadian here! I’m 7 years into ownership of my 16’ED Bighorn. Relatively low kms for the year at 122,000kms. 1/3 of these kms have been towing. I’ve had ZERO issues! Only been back to the dealership for recalls. Its been GDE hot tuned after it’s first oil change. I wasn’t interested in more power. I mainly wanted to shut off the EGR to help with engine longevity. I do oil/ filter changes with Rotella T6 every 10,000km and change the fuel filter every other oil change. I also treat every tank of diesel with an additive. I’ve never done an engine oil analysis but will start my next oil change. My intentions were always to keep this truck for the long haul. Ive wanted to do other things such as delete/ oil catch can but have stalled on these ideas because now I’m contemplating selling due to the main bearing issues. The lack of replacement engines available and the price tag of a replacement now goes for around $20,000 is what’s put me in this new mindset. From what I’ve read (I’m no expert) is lugging these trucks is the worst thing for them. When they lug it puts pressure on the crank which In turn puts excessive pressure on the crank bearings and inevitably will lead to bearing failure. Which is ironic because when they lug is when they get the best fuel mileage and that’s why we bought these trucks in the first place. Moral of the story is let them rev. Don’t let them drop below 1500-1600rpm especially in the higher over drive gears. I’d love to see accurate statistics on engine failures. Such as are these failures more prone to trucks with 3.21 or 3.55 gear sets Over trucks with 3.92’s? Trucks that are used for grocery getters over trucks that get worked? Sorry for the long post! Keep up the great content.
These videos are what I consider real reviews when it comes to reliability and owner satisfaction. Sounds like a good truck. Yup those early version EGR systems are killers for every manufacturer. I think they are better now but not sure.
This vehicle reminds me of the lennox pulse furnace in the 80s, great piece of equipment that needs a little extra maintenance that the manufacturer does a terrible job of telling the public. I was having issue after issue with the dpf regeneration chrysler never told me about dpf cleaning fluid or alphaobd software, once you learn how to take care of these they are great.
Family of 4 Looking for a first time truck We also get -30c to -45c, Buying a used truck and spending lots of $$$ , is this truck worth it? Tow eventually camper 5500lbs Probably less Blowing an engine doesnt seem very convincing, especially Buying used Can you trust the dealer ? Or previous owner. Thoughs appreciated
its honestly so tough, as long as oil changes were actually done regularly it should be okay. some trucks go 400,000+ with stock parts. ours just rolled over 300K deleted from about 80,000km.
I got a 15 ecodiesel back in November of 23 had 106k miles and ive already had to replace my driveshaft, both front wheel bearing and i had the cruise control wire harness replaced. I want to delete the exaust but im not sure if i can legally do that in my state of Wisconsin.
Thank you for the video - rough to hear about the 25% failure rate. I'm on my 2nd one - had a great deal with the trade from 2015 to 2018 and haven't had any problems. Q: Do you think the problem is driving style with city stop and go vs. the highway?
I would say getting the oil up to temp and circulating more often would help carbon build up. In terms of main bearing maybe not so much but definitely intake manifold that carbon gets rock hard.
Mine has been the best vehicle that I've ever owned. Deleted and tuned at 5,000 miles. Said screw the warrantee. Almost 150,000 miles, not one problem. Hot Shot EDT on every tank and Extreme every 30,000 miles. Old GDE tune. Dielectric greased all electrical connectors under the truck.
had a 2018 eco diesel with 108 000 km engine die from "rod and bearing" failure. What's $17 000 cdn for a new engine between friends? lol You really roll the dice with this engine.
Hello great video, I have a 2014 ecodiesel, bought it new did a few repairs over the year's, it just rolled over 864,000 great truck and still getting 8 litres per hundred.
I had a 2014 Ram Ecodiesel Lonestar. I was the original owner. 176,000 miles. Unfortunately I had to get rid of it. 2 intake manifolds, 1 DPF, 1 DEF tank, and 3 EGRs. I really wish some days I still had it but it spent almost 8 total months in the shop. I hope Fiat got the 3rd Generation Ecodiesel right in the 2021 and up models. Luckily for me all the work and parts were under the regular warranty or emissions warranty. I did get $18,500 for a trade in 4 months ago and it was gone off the lot in one day. I see it every once in a while on the roads. A young man has it. I was excited to purchase a used 2019 Nissan Titan XD (5.0L Cummins) until I talked to the service manager. They replace the EGRs in them due to failure about once every 8-10 months. He told me he’s done too many to count. I couldn’t do it again. Too many issues with emissions and diesels. I live in an emissions state and unable to delete due to yearly inspections and fines. So i did get a new/used truck. A 2019 Nissan Titan SL 4x4 5.6L gasser. It’s a shame that we are choking the diesels to death.
Great video I have 2015 bighorn Ecodiesel with 60000 miles no issues to date maybe the low mileage mine is not deleted have had the EGR cooler recall fixed already the service advisor said mine was the first they’ed replaced that wasn’t leaking already maybe mine built on a Wednesday don’t know I use the shell rotella T6 that Chrysler recommends along with hot shots stiction eliminater great truck probably best I’ve owned and my first Ram ever
I just got this truck (2014 lamarie longhorn) this week with 130k miles. The thing was super clean and diesel with a good deal. The only issue I had right away was the key fobs intermittently not working. I found out that the IC chip inside has too much space behind it and overtime the circuit bends as you push the buttons (pushing harder and harder when it doesn't work makes it worse). Put a piece of paper behind the ic chip on both fobs and now they work perfectly! Everything else on the truck is working good as far as I see. This is texas so no rust. I am gonna delete the ecu/emissions stuff soon to get even more life, power and mpg out of it.
@@AyooKDot Awesome truck, if you find one in good condition jump on it and take care of it. About 3k miles since I got it including a roadtrip. I did the GDE tune on it and while I was disappointed that DEF can't be disabled anymore (legally anyway), the EGR is disabled, truck is wayyy more responsive and I get about 21mpg average with all terrain tires. Comfy asf and I already saved myself about $300 in delivery costs of stuff just by hauling it, barely any mpg loss when hauling (advantage of diesel). I am planning to do oil and filter changes myself with amsoil because my friend says that's the best oil he used (same gen truck) and it goes 15k miles.
@@rupok93 still loving it? I am considering buying one. They can be had for about 20k under 100k miles around me pretty consistently. My biggest fear is emissions systems issues. Last thing I want to do is get a new truck (coming from a dead ass reliable 98 f150 with a 4.6.) and have to do lots of maintenance. Reading the GDE tune solves most if not all problems. Seems like a good buy for 1k with little to no downsides.
I own a 2016 ecodiesel 94k miles. Engine just failed and had to get a new engine. Crankshaft broke. We have only put 17k miles or so on it ourselves. I seem very skeptical keeping it
Crankshaft broke ?? Haven't heard of that failure much at all to be honest. Extended warranties don't hurt. I would personally delete the emissions right away with a new crate engine. Install a catch can from day 1
Thanks for taking the time to make this review. I have a 2015 ED that I bought new, has 200k miles. Lifted 2" in the front, and leveled off with HD springs in the rear. I keep 800 pounds of tools in the bed and tow often, and with additional loads, the rear was compromised prior to changing the springs. Now it stays level with heavy loads. I love the truck, but have had many issues. Truck has the shake at 70 mph that many report, but can't find a resolve. Had many EPA issues when new, it was at the dealer often. Electrical connector issues have been common (lots of idiot lights on and off) especially after rain or snow (I eventually put dielectric grease in all connections that I could access). Water pump failed recently. EGR cooler leaked coolant, bypassed EGR and did a GDE tune. Rear end shot craps when pulling our camper thru Colorado, it was eventually replaced by the recall but we lost a few days of vacation while it was at the dealer. It has the projector head lights, seems like I replace bulbs more often than I should ... by entering through the front wheel wells and removing the light assemblies completely (for a bulb replacement?). Outstanding battery life, I just replaced the original battery. I love the torque curve and the performance of the ED / 8 speed transmission. The interior and comfort of the truck is better than the Chevy and Fords that I have owned. The 2WD traction is incredible, so much so that I rarely put it in 4WD. Engine / Transmission still operate as new which is also impressive. Just did the brakes today, I get 100k miles per brake job, so the truck is easy on brakes, especially considering that I tow very often (I also use the engine braking option on the GDE tune, and I use the pushbutton shifting to downshift when going down steep hills). My main complaint is the 70 mph shake in the center console. Dealers could not fix it, new wheels/tires/force balancing/driveshaft work/u-joint work/new motor mounts etc.. nothing has dampened the shake. The shake is no worse now, than it was when it started at about 75k miles. I have never had this many issues with a truck, but I have also never loved a truck like I do this one, otherwise it would have been gone many years ago.
Appreciate the review man. I had a bad bearing in the front left and it appears to be fixed now I redid the front end. What tires are you running and have you tried removing the 2" lift just to be sure.? Cheers
great review......I have a 2016 4x4 Lonestar Eco Diesel with 169,000 miles. Only expensive repairs were replacement of the tone ring.. (Timing device between the flywheel and block), $2000.00 and now my turbo just went out $4,000.00 cab off repair. GDE hot tune, lots of aftermarket goodies too many to list. Deleting EGR while the cab is off. Love my truck, I've had 7 rams, this one is the best.
2015 ecodiesel I bought new. SCR failures at 20k, 35k, and 66k, had the recall engine update at 44k and the engine blew at 66k. Factory installed new engine and all the sensors. Now has 87k and I just wonder what's going next. It is the best riding and driving truck I've owned but I'll be getting rid of it before it hits 100,000 miles. I have a 96 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins that I bought new. I will be buried with this truck!
Thanks for the 250k review - very much appreciated. Also appreciated the dash cam comment re battery drain; recently installed a dash cam so will now be aware of this. My 2014 ecodiesel (purchased Aug/2014) has 200k and had a GDE hot tune in 2018 at about 130k. Truck runs well, biggest issue has been tone ring which just recently had the warranty extended to eight years/unlimited kms for that part/issue. Also I owe you an apology; in a previous comment I said I used 11 litres when I changed my oil (not 10); I subsequently realized that in fact what I use is 11 US quarts (Amsoil) so 10 litres now makes sense to me. Look forward to your upcoming truck maintenance videos, along with the rest. Good luck with the house reno - most interesting.
Hey no harm done buddy I knew what you meant. I looked my truck up and my VIN wasn't included in the tone ring recall and I mine was built in April like I mentioned. Oh well she's running good. Cheers and thanks
Hi I bought 2019 ecodiesel deleted it with 1600 km have had no issues with truck averages around 9 km per 100 excellent fuel mileage running 146000 km going to try cold air intake see if can increase mpg might try 3 inch exhaust just try and increase mpg not concerned about power price fuel amount of driving I do in a day. Great truck.
I just got a 2015 ED LONE STAR edition. I’ve owned it for two months. Had it in my possession for 2 weeks. It’s been one issue after another. And been back at the dealer since Glow plug failure Glow plug losing compression Massive oil leak Low fuel pressure Bad front differential Particulate Matter Sensor code I think I got sold a lemon
@@GilbertGardens it’s coming from the front of the engine. It’s so bad the oil is all over the rear diff. I’ll find out more this week. It shut off on me on my way to work and had to have it towed back to the dealer lol. I noticed a humming from the front end. Took it back to the dealer assuming it would be a hub. But nope. It’s the diff
I’ve got about 15 months left on my extended warranty and then I’m getting rid of my 2015 BigHorn 4x4 Eco (with 110k miles on it now). It’s been in the shop 3 times in 20 months for a total of 7 weeks. It’s currently in the shop now getting a new reluctor wheel in the torque converter. While it’s there, getting new ball joints and some other minor things done (not complaining about those issues, just normal wear and tear). My cruise control works when it wants. Key Fob, which was still in near perfect condition, worked when it wanted as well. Got a new one from a guy on Facebook for $100 and it’s exactly the same same as factory and works perfect. Had to take it in twice for recalls and was in the shop the first week I had it for electric shutter thing in the hood. I hate the turbo lag. I won’t let my wife drive it because I don’t want her to get t-boned pulling out on the road. I’ve never come close to getting the crazy mpg numbers everyone else claims. I don’t pull trailers or haul loads much and drive usually 5 over the speed limit and I get 17 in the city and 19 on the highway. I love the style and the look. It’s powerful. I just don’t trust it not to send me to the poor house when the extended warranty ends next year.
Wow, sorry to hear about your mileage. I have only had my 2016 for less than 3 months but I've put about 13,000 miles on it so far and I've actually managed to get an average high of 28mpg on the highway but normally around 24. Of course that drops like a stone when I tow my 7 by 14 cargo trailer. Down to 10 / 11 mpg towing.
I'm in the US, last September I found a 2019 RAM 1500 classic EcoDiesel with only 17k miles on it. As I researched further I found that it was originally sold in Canada. So even though the pickup should still have Factory warranty, Chrysler won't stand behind it. They voided the rest of the remaining warranty. How ridiculous is that? So, I went through a very reputable and highly rated aftermarket company and now the truck is covered for up to 6 years or 142k miles. Haven't had any issues so far.
Hey brother, just find your video and thank you for the all the info. I have 22 Wrangler EcoDiesel Gen3. What would you suggest for me to make sure I avoid the typical pit falls. Seems like the EGR delete and DPF delete are the key for a long and happy life. However the obvious down side create pit fall. Any maintenance routines or after market swap to help with longevity? Not looking for 100k more HP or 800kg of torque. Just need to make this engine last. Thanks again for the positive post
@ebec2believe776 it'll involve the egr disabled. That's the main ine for engine life. You can get tunes just to disable the egr. That'll help with engine sludge. The DPF DEF and SCR (exhaust) are mostly just problematic.
I own a 2016 RAM 1500 ECO Diesel it has 66,337 miles. The engine locked up on a drive down the Freeway. It happed Early June 2022. I still have no idea when a replacement engine is going to arrive from Fiat Chysler of America. They are back ordered from VR Motori Engines of Italy. I took very good care of my truck. I had changed the Oil with the 5-40W Shell Rotella recommended oil every time and I changed the oil early! Now I have no Truck no Warranty and No way to fix it becuase Ram Truck can't get a engine for it. It's a terrible situation. I would recommend selling your ECO DIESEL if you own one. They are poorly designed engines on the Lower end. (crank shaft flexes under load and it has some oiling issues with the main bearings) SO this is my feedback to your review.
Watch out for the exhaust gasket between the DPF flex and SCR leaking. On my 2016 one of the 3 factory studs that holds the flange together had backed off enough to allow hot exhaust to shoot out directly onto the wiring loom routed above that area. Drilled out the studs and put in 1 1/2" x 5/16 stainless nuts, bolts and a $37 gasket. Caught it early enough so nothing else came of it, but cautionary tale about more DEF system issues. Honestly great truck, but the DEF system is the Achilles heel. Looking to delete once out of extended warranty.
If you do a GDE (green diesel engineering) tune throttle response improves immensely, fuel economy goes up, and EGR gets bypassed. Unfortunately, price went up dramatically once they developed an EPA approved tune. Prior to that you could get your ECM tuned and never add DEF. Big thing is make sure you use whatever oil Stelantis recommends for your truck. For my '17 it is Shell Rotella T6 15w-40. Just had Blackstone run my oil sample and at 100k on the truck and 10k on the oil the results came back saying the engine and oil were in great shape. Staying with the 10k oil changes. @@wraykizlyk3164
Happy to like and subscribe based on this informative video. I blew my engine at 60,000 miles. RAM gave me a rebuilt one. I changed oil ever 8500 miles. I am going to check my warranty and make sure any mods won't screw me. Again, THANKS!
No worries. Yes change that oil. Keep up on it. I'll be posting more content soon on the ecodiesel. This damn addition has been consuming every free minute I have at the moment.
Do you think your mods blew the engine? Mine just gave out at 94k miles. Nothing was ever wrong with my truck prior. Fortunately it’s still under warranty so it’s currently at the dealership. Wife and I are trying to decide weather to keep it or not
@@sheldonfischer8202 , I hope you get this. Sorry I did not see it earlier. I had no mods, so that has no bearing. I have had diesels in the past and every so often after warm up, I would tromp on it to blow out the soot. The engine just stopped. I will never do it again since it is out of warranty. I just made another comment above saying I will do the EGR. I will also do the oil can. Don't know about other more expensive mods since the truck is 8 years old.
@@GilbertGardens , nice of you to respond. This was a great video. I love hearing your accent. My dad was born up there and served in the RCAF during WWII. 10 years in MN and down in this oven of a state, Texas now.
I had one of these for nine years. Very comfortable to drive,. Very uncomfortable to own. $23,000 in warranty claims including a new motor and still has an open recall . Otherwise,.. it was great
Excellent review , completely truthful. All vehicles have problems but it depends on what your willing to deal with … I have 2011 Hemi with now 149K Miles changed engine due to cam failure with cause a MisFire code . Truck is solid and is my third Ram . I considering getting a 2023 big horn with 3:92s in the rear and ECO diesel , would you think that’s a gamble based on your availability experience and feedback ??? Thanks
No offense but man this truck sounds like a piece of junk. To those of us that cannot remove the emissions stuff that would be a major deal breaker. I was going to recommend this to my dad but now I don't know. There is a lot to be said about having an old truck that is paid for that runs fine. I don't think I'll ever get a new car they all have issues.
Hey! I have 2017 Ram 1500 ecodiesel with 350k miles.! Tow every day! No problems yet! Except oil change what else I should pay attention to.! Especially engine! Any maintenance recommendations???
@@GilbertGardens that’s what I do! Fluids and filters! Recently changed rear seal gasket 294k and alternator 270k! For engine just do on time oil change???? I use only EOM filters and Shell rottella oil !!!
5 times at the dealer in the first 6 months? Wipers and cruise control going bonkers because of some well know connector failure? Your a much more patient man than me. I’m glad your happy with the truck though. Whatever floats ur boat.
@fergyspoolshots it was very frustrating early on due to emissions. I've had the same cruise control issue in our jeep compass 2011. It's something in the steering wheel I believe. It works if you move the wheel up and down a bit. Weird. Not a game changer for me. 1200+ km per tank highway was what I was after.
Here's some statistics 5 out of 6 Ecodiesel owners I know have had catastrophic lower end engine failures. 1 of them twice... Mind you their service and maintenance diligence is questionable but currently one friend just blew his up with approx 50,000km on it and maintained by myself using Mopar filters and Rotella T6 from new. He hauls an enclosed triple capacity snowmobile trailer about 200kms round trip three times a month and nothing in the summer and never matted in tow or lugged it knowing those are Ecodiesel death sentences. We're rather surprised to say the least and there's quite a wait for crate engines with a substantial backorder on them.
Seems to be a roll of the dice... The one guy i know that hasn't blown an engine hauls a wash trailer, plows snow and has even put it in truck pulls and not so much as a check engine light and is easily pushing well over 300,000km. But he does have it serviced religiously. As much as i do believe the crankshafts are made of glass, I'm also firm in my belief that diligent maintenance with factory filters and Rotella T6 will certainly prolong the life of these ecodiesels and any other engine for that matter..
I’m looking at 2015/16 eco diesels. If you disable the EGR, will that take care of the main bearing concern? Are you able to pass emissions with the EGR disabled?
You probably could pass emissions with just the EGR disabled. The emissions underneath are a dead give away. It's really hard to say. There's 7 years of gunk in there. I would disable it and do a couple of short interval oil changes. Get the oil super hot and drain it. The sooty oil hardens and causes the issues. Hope that helps.
U.S. owner--2017 ecodiesel, 119k miles, oil changes at 10k miles. Blackstone showed oil to be great at 100k after 10k miles. GDE tune at 750 miles which eliminated turbo lag and the silliness of regurgitating exhaust into your intake. Still at 27-30 mpg. Tows fantastic. Only problem is that when turning the steering wheel it will sometimes change info screen or radio channel (I'm told there is some electrical "ring" that loses contact or makes contact causing the electrical gremlins). I did have the EGR cooler recall done only because of warranty. Have not changed front rotors or brakes, changed rears because the emergency brake pads fell apart at about 100k miles. I love this truck! Other than the emergency brake pad replacement I have never had the truck in the shop (change oil myself with Rotella T6, 5w-40). I changed the transmission filter and tray at 90k miles just for piece of mind even though the mfg. says it is a lifetime filter. New tray will allow me to change the filter without changing the entire tray. My truck does like tires at 35k miles which seems to be out of character to most owner's experience.
I have a 2019 EcoDiesel and had catastrophic engine failure at 45k miles. This happened less than 200 miles after a fresh oil change from the the dealership. Thankfully it was under warranty, but it took them 58 days to get it back to me. Less than 200 miles on the new engine, and I already have a check engine light on. Haven't read the code yet. I'm very disturbed to see how many folks have had engine failures on this. I love the truck and can't afford to take a loss on it, but my instinct tells me to sell.
sorry to hear that. I would check the error out and delete it immediately. On the other hand I dont blame ya. My wife drives the eco now and it has 290,000km or so.
@@GilbertGardens I think my last reply was rejected because I pasted a link. This is the code that came up. It doesn't seem like it's related to the engine replacement, but what do I know? P2002 Raw code: 2002 ECU: Engine control unit Status: Confirmed OBDII: Particulate trap, bank 1 - efficiency below threshold
I had a 2018 ecodiesel I had it deleted at 40000 miles because the egr cooler was leaking. Other than that no issues until 85000 miles the front diff stubs axles striped out do to water and dirt getting in. I took to see if it was under warranty and ended up just traded it for a used 2018 ram 2500 Commings with only 65000 miles on it. so far I’m happy with it just not getting as good of fuel mileage as the ecodiesel.
I have a 2016 Eocdiesel with 138k miles on it. Recently, I started driving it less since I mostly work from home, and the issues started. I have had the "Service Electronic Throttle" message 3 times. Every time the truck does not accelerate quickly and I have to drive it like a lawn mower. So I take it to the dealer, and they clean the sooth, change air filters, etc and the message goes away. I am starting to lose faith in it but I don't want to give up on it yet! I love the mpg's I get so it is hard to go to a gas truck now.
yes i get that message too from time to time but i dont get any actual restrictions. I believe that message is a generic message that can mean a broad issue. further scanning required. BTW what did they actually do when they "cleaned the soot" out ?
Recover engine longevity by stopping exhuast emissions from recirculating through your engine. Have a computer programer reprogram your engine control unit (ECU)
Error code P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance. Problem is actually the Reluctor Ring or Tone Ring which is buried between the flywheel on the crankshaft $30 part that requires removal of axels, transmission, starter, and many misc parts to access. Reluctor ring has thin plastic magnet around the perimeter that the crankshaft Position Sensor reads. When it fails, and many do, chunks of the magnetic strip break off and the engine will not start. Very expensive repair due to extensive labor required to access. Love the truck but certain repairs require parts that are back ordered from Europe and take weeks or months to get because they are back ordered. Fiat ownership.
Great video. I have an ecodiesel I am now at 137k miles and I now am starting to have issues, mostly with fuel and DPF. I am considering deleting the EGR and DPF . The truck has been great up until now. I would like to get more in depth information about bypassing the EGR and not removing it. Also about the tuning. The DPF is clogged so I will need to delete that. Hopefully I can get the right information and be able to keep this truck for many more years. Thanks for your help.
Hi , quick question would you buy another Eco-diesel if so which year? I really like the Ram line up of models. I am very interested in purchasing an Eco-Diesel as gas prices out here in BC are ridiculous Thanks
How are they for gravel roads? I drive an hour of rough gravel doing 100km/h. Our 2500 diesels are rough. How do you think this would ride compared to a 1500 gas?
@@GilbertGardens I own a 2007 Toyota Tundra with 389,000 miles without any repairs. Then again, I am very diligent about my maintenance. I am somewhat interested in the RAM eco diesel. That’s why I am here. Then again- It’s hard to beat Toyota quality.
I think buddy fried his electrical, all the problems he listed after the def sound like things related to the power draw from his dash cam in the winter, tbh it doesn’t make sense
The service electronic control throttle and a dead battery ? I'm only on my second battery after about 8 years now. The service electronic control throttle is quite common. My wife doesn't even plug the dash cam in anymore. I had it running fir a 2 hour trip a few weeks ago everything seems alright ?
Great video. Very helpful. I just purchased a 2019 eco diesel classic that had a gen 3 engine installed by the dealer. They chose this instead of fixing the crank shaft recall. There is so much negativity online, it’s good to hear someone speaking truthfully about real experiences (good and bad). Fellow tradesman from Caledon, Ontario.
Own a 2015 Ecodiesel Big Horn edition. Currently 110,000 miles since new. The following issues with this vehicle as follows. Replaced two turbos, the radio navigation system was replaced three times, the ignition and starter, DEF system, water pump. Recall EGR Cooler. Currently having issues with the ABS Electronic trailer light intermittently coming on dealer never replaced speed sensor or front wheel hubs. The rear panel developed rust wasn’t covered under Ram warranty. It’s been in the dealership for long periods of time. At least I was provided a loaner car. I received $3,075 under the class action lawsuit. The AEM update definitely screwed with performance. The truck was given an additional 48k warranty with the AEM update.
@@Gene4666 It was the EPA approved emission update. It actually reduced the performance of the Ecodiesel MPG and created a lag when trying to accelerate from a stop. A second AEM was created to address those issues. The lag a poor fuel economy are still present with the updated AEM. Best to not get the AEM. The problem is most people are having complete engine failures at some point under 200,000 miles. The Diesel engine is not reliable as everyone had hoped for. Outside the US people are have the EGR deleted to help with performance. The Ecodiesel before the AEM was a solid 28 MPG. Now it’s about 24 MPG on the highway because of the EPA approved AEM.
I like to delete egr I have 2015 3.0l v6 ecodiesel . Everything still original 140k runs perfect. What kind off parts I need to delete my egr. is my first diesel truck. Any help thank you
Wow, thanks for the review. I was thinking of trading my nissan armada for a 2017 ecodiesel wirh 98k. My 2012 armada has a 130k and I haven't had not one hikup. Only dealer visits have be for regular maintenance
I have a 2018 with 280,000 miles. Only issues, a warranty on the EGR that melted my intake. A bad wire to the active shutters and most resent the crank sensor & tone wheel failed. I do run synthetic oil and Wix filters every 10k miles, fuel filter every 20-30k and Hot Shot Secret stiction eliminator every 50k.
Thank you for the excellent review. I bought mine new in 2017 and the engine gave up at 75,000 km. I had it replaced under warranty and now I'm at 120,000 km. At first I was changing the oil at about 14k to 16k and after the new engine I change it between 8k to 10k now. I baby the engine because I want the truck to last a long time. So far mine is all stock and haven't decided if I want to delete it. Apparently the fines are havety if you're found out. I am in Ontario, Canada
Great video! I have 15 grand Cherokee ED. When I tow, I get an burnt oil smell in the cab? Only towing, does this sound like an EGR issue? Hope you still check this 11 months later. Thanks.
never heard of that before. make sure oil levels are good and your not forcing more oil into the turbo. Check out my catch can video. Its possible you have too much oil vapour being pushed back into the system .
If got a 2015 4x4 long box work truck. Its been a great truck. I use it for landscaping i use Castrol gtx oil and never have engine problems. I use Amsoil transmission fluid, and i use these fuel tabs that improve combustion and fuel economy. My truck used to regen quite often then once i started using these tabs my regens went down to once per tank and has more pep doesnt have to work as hard. Since i use them. I also have a honda ridgeline as my daily driver i dont tow much or haul much with that. I also have a 2016 4x4 crew cab as a travel truck. Both have the 3.0 diesels.
FYI - leaving the EGR cooler on will definitely still cause the fire issues that are being reported. Only way to truly avoid it is to do the stage 2 EGR delete. I've done the DPF, EGR Stage2, CAT, Muffler and resonator delete. It's like a whole new truck!
@@sstanton2252 Yup, stage 2 delete is only way to go. Even the recalled EGR coolers are still leaking. Just drop the weight and liability of the coolers leaking altogether.
We have a 2014 ecodiesel with almost 120,000 miles. Runs great third trip across the country and get 26-28 mpg on real world average and about 19-22 in town... Antifreeze is orange but somehow escaping. I keep it filled, if it is the 3 way coolant valve should I replace immediately?
Good video, I currently have a Sport Trac and found a 16 EcoDiesel in my area that caught my eye… and have been looking for information on them.. thanks
The secret to having a good turbocharged engine experience. Is cooling down the turbo before shutdown. I do add Hot Shots Secret stiction eliminator. And use the Hot Shot Secret fuel additives. My truck is a 2016 Ram Quadcab 4wd 3.92 ratio with the Ecodiesel. Has 163k miles. Totally California emissions compliant. It did add the Bank's silencer delete, but run a Wix air filter. The exhaust has a Flowmaster 50 series HD muffler. New upper and lower control arms. Bilstein 5100 shocks with a rear spacers for a 2" lift all around. My wife has a 2018 Ram Crewcab 4wd 3.42 ratio Cummins beast. And that truck is more expensive to maintain. It tows and hauls twice as much. I almost bought a 2020 gen3. But got a Dodge Durango to supplement the fleet. The pickups do not fit in all parking garages. I wish the Durango had the Ecodiesel.
@Animated Depression I did the lift after other changes. Ever since I added the Ranch Hand Legend bumper. The nose has been an inch lower. So the 2" lift in the front with the Bilstein 51000 shocks. Left the front 1" higher than stock. On the back, there is a Snug Top camper with gear for outdoors recreation inside. I changed to a heavier taller spring from ICON, and longer shocks. So the actual ride height change from the springs was only 1". The truck has the 3.92 ratio differtial. So the increase in tire diameter to 33" was not a problem. So the total increase in ride height was 2" at the fenderwell. Driving the same speeds, measured by GPS, got the same range. The Ecodiesel is a good engine. Be nice to the turbo. And clean the intake manifold every year or so. I use Hot Shots Secret diesel fuel treatments. My wife has a 2018 Ram 2500 with the Cummins. I put a 4wheel popup camper on it. Without the EDT fuel additive, we get 13mpg. With the fuel additive we get 20mpg.
@@jameseroh6544 just curious what’s your process of cleaning the intake manifold trying to do the most to save the motor while keeping it epa compliant.
Just got a 15 grand Cherokee with the eco diesel engine, what should I do to it that’s the cheapest way to ensure the engine will have a long life ? Every keeps talking about deletes but I don’t know what that is like what part needs to be deleted and how much can I expect to pay to do it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Nice truck btw.
Best thing you can do is use Shell Rotella T6 15w40 as recommended by Stelantis. Ten-k oil changes are fine ad I had my oil tested (100k on truck, 10k on oil) and Blackstone sent back excellent results. GDE tune has gotten very expensive but throttle response is greatly improved, power is better, and mpg's goes up a little. Drive it, don't baby it and, if you can, avoid short trips, especially in cold weather.
I have same issue with cruise control. I did front brakes at 40,000k and at 60,000 i did front and rear, pads rotters calipers and emg pads. They had to pull axles for that. I have been back to dealer many times for recalls. It is a 2015 I now have 77,000 k. When I got it I was getting 32 miles to gallon. Now after they played with the computer I average 24 miles a gal. Tires wore out at 20,00 k and now on 3rd.set. Tires might have been over inflated. I have replaced the starter because of the wire harness. I replaced the air con pump belts etc 4500.00 for that job. Total cost on repairs about 10,000 Canadian to date. I bought it new.
man that sucks. my wife is driving the truck now and a caliper seized recently. Had to have the shop do the work as I was out of town. Of course new rotors and brakes. They also wanted to the do rear calipers but I held them off.
I have a 2015 with over 180,000 miles (~290,000 km) on it. I have had to change both front wheel hubs and it need shocks. The line going to the DEF injector corroded away last week. Its plastic so I'm not sure whats going on there. I dont think its plugged like you said yours was. Some Exhaust bolts just rusted out on me too. The rest of the truck is pretty clean as far as rust goes, those bolts just chooched their last I guess. I Have a very small coolant leak... i cant find it. Maybe a gallon a year? its going somewhere... Other that those things this truck is very dependable. I have the GDE tune on it and haven't had any issues other than normal maintenance things. Good video man, Thanks for the update.
The line going to the def injector possibly melted due to the common broken exhaust bolts. I had mine completely melt the line as well as the plastic inlet portion of def injector.
@@pimpedout1620 you’re absolutely right. After further inspection and lots of beer I’ve come to the same conclusion. I had to replace almost everything cause most of it was melted. Ugh.
If you do that intake i recommend replacing the turbo cooling hose in the valley mine went out and this is a known issue on this truck. mine has 170k miles hose blew out at 167k
@@GilbertGardens yea it is It was used as a fleet truck, had 60k miles when I got I mostly do highway miles I actually put a new oil pump recommended by a shop, which didnt even work since my pcv valve went out because my truck would shut off and the oil light would come on so a new oil pump didn't even fix the issue but glad I have a new one now.
Truck has a valve cover leak, and needs a new temperature sensor manifold for passenger side. Also, has 148k miles. There is about 19k left on the 3.0 warranty for the engine. I’m thinking about deleting it, but I know at that point I’ll be out of warranty. I brought my truck used and it drives pretty smooth interior in great confining to be a 2015 Laramie! Real classic truck. There are other things going on with my truck but the major things are the valve cover gaskets and the temperature sensor.
ITS A REAL PAIN. I belive it can be any number of things. theres a good ecodiesel forum out there and they can help pin point more specifically. mine comes and goes still. ten years later
I'm looking for my first pick-up truck and I thought about the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel. It will be my work truck, I won't be carrying any weight, but it will be used on a daily basis. What do you think? Is it a good choice? I was thinking 2016 upwards!
Thanks for the review. Heard it said “there are hero’s and ZERO’S” when it comes to the motor reliability. Maybe that’s the owners oil change frequency though!. On the EGR, remember, the control valve is on the outgoing side of the EGR cooler, so even with flow disabled, the EGR cooler does still see the hot exhaust gas and if it leaks, bad deal. Do the recall for sure.
I did tow with it, I have a 7 ton dump trailer. Not super often but it tows 10,000 lbs fine. I have a 2023 6.6L Duramax now as well so I tow with that mostly. @@DennisGodinho
Hi, my friend I gonna buy a truck but I need your advice on which one is better Ford F150 2.7 EcoBoost or RAM 3.0 ecodiesel (2015 both)? Which is more reliable?
The v8 Hemi, the famous Cam/lifter problem. Change oil every 4 k miles Royal Purple always. Now i got a 2014 Special Service Vehicle Ram 1500, just because i love Ram. I hope it lasts for a long time
Nice Review with real world wear and tear.
Man glad to hear that. 👏. I feel like that's how Mines heading. I'm working on the suspension videos now
Engine oil?
Have the same issue - yeah I press those buttons and it resets
@boumahdi 🇩🇿 yeaaaah buddy
My cruise control started giving me issues recently as well
Fellow Canadian here!
That's a good write up Thank you.
These videos are what I consider real reviews when it comes to reliability and owner satisfaction. Sounds like a good truck. Yup those early version EGR systems are killers for every manufacturer. I think they are better now but not sure.
You look at the handful of rare instances as “real reliability”? Buy this truck and you’re more likely to be dissatisfied
@@AsianNIGMAwhy u say this? Im looking into buy a used one with 120k miles
Family of 4
Looking for a first time truck
We also get -30c to -45c,
Buying a used truck and spending lots of $$$ , is this truck worth it?
Tow eventually camper 5500lbs
Probably less
Blowing an engine doesnt seem very convincing, especially Buying used
Can you trust the dealer ?
Yes = no reason to watch this video past the 3:50 min mark where he deletes it
had a 2018 eco diesel with 108 000 km engine die from "rod and bearing" failure. What's $17 000 cdn for a new engine between friends? lol You really roll the dice with this engine.
Shitttttt
Hello great video, I have a 2014 ecodiesel, bought it new did a few repairs over the year's, it just rolled over 864,000 great truck and still getting 8 litres per hundred.
That's great to hear. Thanks
864,000 Km’s? WOW
Same motor?
@@PesoTowz yes
Youre probably the king of oil changes😂..864k!!
I have the exact lonestar, love it
How you like the Nissan titan ?
Great video I have 2015 bighorn Ecodiesel with 60000 miles no issues to date maybe the low mileage mine is not deleted have had the EGR cooler recall fixed already the service advisor said mine was the first they’ed replaced that wasn’t leaking already maybe mine built on a Wednesday don’t know I use the shell rotella T6 that Chrysler recommends along with hot shots stiction eliminater great truck probably best I’ve owned and my first Ram ever
Glad to hear it brother. There are good stories out there.
You got it. Enjoy the truck keep us posted.
How’s it held up two months later?
Cheers
Love it,,liberal swearing,good Canuck😃💖🇨🇦
great review......I have a 2016 4x4 Lonestar Eco Diesel with 169,000 miles.
I will be buried with this truck!
shit I dont blame at. hit and miss it seems.
What is the 5.9 Cummins mileage
Air intakes don't typically increase fuel economy. The air fuel ratio though tuning will. Air intakes are mostly for sound and eye candy.
I just got a 2015 ED LONE STAR edition. I’ve owned it for two months. Had it in my possession for 2 weeks. It’s been one issue after another. And been back at the dealer since
Glow plug failure
Glow plug losing compression
Massive oil leak
Low fuel pressure
Bad front differential
Particulate Matter Sensor code
I think I got sold a lemon
Jesus. What oil leak ? Bad front diff???? How ?? Sorry to hear
Haven't had any issues so far.
good to hear shawn keep us updated. Our is still pulling hard.
I have a 2017 ecodiesel and had the motor replaced at 83000 kms because it spun a bearing. Love the truck and would buy another one when this one dies
Brutal. I'd be real interested in these after market bearings. Yeah I love the truck and I'd likely be down for a 3rd Gen in the future.
Sorry to hear that. Are they giving you a loaner at least ????
I've heard that. Thanks for sharing.
I have heard the power and feul economy increase after deletion. Whats your opinion

No offense but man this truck sounds like a piece of junk. To those of us that cannot remove the emissions stuff that would be a major deal breaker. I was going to recommend this to my dad but now I don't know. There is a lot to be said about having an old truck that is paid for that runs fine.
@@GilbertGardens my coworker loves his 2014 as well. He’s going in for the fuel pump recall tomorrow…
That's serious. Like I said I can only go off my families exp. I'm just around 280k now wife loves it. Stinks a bit though .
@@tomfox1751 that's how ya do it.
is deleting the EGR done by physically removing it or parts of it, or is it done through a software?
Software shutdown the egr. You can choose to remove it or leave it. It's in the actual tune. Cheers.
@@GilbertGardens Thank you, I'll look in to that,
I have a 2019 EcoDiesel and had catastrophic engine failure at 45k miles.

I took to see if it was under warranty and ended up just traded it for a used 2018 ram 2500 Commings with only 65000 miles on it. so far I’m happy with it just not getting as good of fuel mileage as the ecodiesel.
Good to know. I'd love a 2500 but cant justify it because I don't tow often enough.
Yes tone ring is another big issue

Nice setup for sure. I do toss in some diesel lube from time to time.
How’s the fuel economy with the lift?

The GDE tune bypasses the EGR and keeps that shit out of your engine.

I'm looking for my first pick-up truck and I thought about the RAM 1500 Ecodiesel. It will be my work truck, I won't be carrying any weight, but it will be used on a daily basis. What do you think? Is it a good choice? I was thinking 2016 upwards!
yes just make sure to get on the highway and get the oil warmed up every so often. change it often if you are keeping the EGR
Junk.
Bad experience??
Hi. In Ontario as well looking for a egr delete. Have 105k don’t know where to turn. Thanks
Kijiji usually has a couple of ads. Cheers.
Look up Green Diesel Engineering they can help you with this
Yes or no would you buy another one
yes and id do the same thing to it. love this truck, still
Why did u not tow with it
I did tow with it, I have a 7 ton dump trailer. Not super often but it tows 10,000 lbs fine. I have a 2023 6.6L Duramax now as well so I tow with that mostly.

Hi, my friend I gonna buy a truck but I need your advice on which one is better Ford F150 2.7 EcoBoost or RAM 3.0 ecodiesel (2015 both)? Which is more reliable?
I don't know ow much about the ford's. How many Miles on the ecodiesel
let's say 90 000 miles for both. Which is more reliable after this mileage?
@@alexk163 well if the ecodiesel hasn't blown up by the your probably in the clear. Have a good once over on it
@@GilbertGardens one more question: does Ram LARAMIE (2015 y ) have a air suspention? as I know rear are springs and what is about forward?
My 2012 ram 1500 sport unfortunately only lasted 5 years and 204 k miles. Very upset. The engine was shot, didn't worth it to fix
that sucks what motor was it ?
sorry sport.. v8. what was wrong with it?
The v8 Hemi, the famous Cam/lifter problem. Change oil every 4 k miles Royal Purple always. Now i got a 2014 Special Service Vehicle Ram 1500, just because i love Ram. I hope it lasts for a long time
