Take a 2 liter bottle. Cut the bottom portion off and put it over the filter housing and turnn them together. The bottle will catch a;ll the fuel leaking out. I do the same thing for my cummins oil filter so I don't spill any oil. Works great.
Good idea. I was going to suggest spinning the cap off into a heavy trash bag. When I worked on trucks, I used to roll the catch pan under the truck, and then perforate all of the filters with a seal removal claw. You could then spin the filters off with out the mess.
As a Commercial Aircraft mechanic this is a very simple job for me but it was still VERY informative in that you didn't miss a thing... I would of simply dipped the o rings in diesel and not assumed that it's lubricated enough w/the housing esp since you cleaned it out... Other than that it was a great instructional.
Just got myself a 2018, and I am already loving your videos. I like to do all the maintenance myself, if I can do it. Your videos make it easy, man. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I've barely had the truck 24 hours, and I feel I'm already prepared to do a number of maintenance jobs, thanks to you.
The freezer bag trick caught some of it but I still managed to nick the freezer bag while unscrewing the fuel filter housing and still take a bath. Maybe next time with the drain value upgrade and the freezer bag it'll be better.
Your video work is really good for these style of videos - getting the perfect mounting, shot and lighting is a PIA and your effort really pays off here - you are also good about taking the time to let the camera focus on what you are trying to show the viewer instead of flashing by something real quick and not thinking of what the camera is doing. Nicely done.
I've watched a few of your videos and am highly impressed. You do a fantastic job, your commentary is very easy to follow and your camera work is superb. For some reason I have to turn my audio up to max to hear you, it may have something to do with your mic settings or your mic may be covered. Outstanding videos, I look forward to more!
Hey Brian, i was watching another site you might consider watching about issues with the ecodiesel. Not bashing the engines, but it's defineitly worth you watching, so you aren't spending zillions of dollars due to engine damage even with routine maintenance. Just wanted you to know. Keep the videos rolling. Thanks Brian
+Brian Skinner Yeah I have seen the one video of the 2014 that was modified but otherwise I have not seen this. Definitely something to be aware of but I will never keep the truck past the warranty period anyway so no big deal if it blows it blows.
I followed this all to the letter, great video! Sadly, the link to the brass replacement drain plug isn't working anymore. I got one of Amazon that specifically said it would work on my 2019 EcoDiesel, but it was too short and the threads wouldn't grab at all. One additional trick I did was to put a freezer zip lock bag over the fuel housing first with my screwdriver inside, and used that to catch the fuel as it started to drain. I then took my screwdriver out, wrapped the bag around the housing then put the removal tool on and it caught all the fuel coming out. Helpful hint!
I called my dealer and asked them how much they charge to change the fuel filter. They told me the price and also said the job included the fuel water filter change. Does such filter even exist on the Ecodiesel? How many filter does the fuel system actually have. I personnaly think they claimed to be doing this extra work to justify the high price they charge customers. Thanks for your video!
All readers & viewers take note; upon removal of the filter it makes my blood boil to see the filter stamped in yellow print "Made in China"!...Otherwise as a trucker with experience in diesel engines for well over 3 decades and a current owner of a 3 litre 2016 JGC Ecodiesel I must say well done young man...Well documented and simple how to do video...Liked it 👍👍👍
spinner 1211 yeah that China shit really irritates me too. How do you like that 3.0l diesel. I was originally going to buy one but decided on the 2017 Tradesman 2500 6.7 cummins diesel with the hand shaker because the price at that trim level was basically same as the 1500 eco’s. I knew I would be forsaking fuel mileage. But in all honesty it’s not that bad for a 8400 lb truck 25 mpg highway and 17 mpg city. Really curious how yours is doing and how many miles on it? I get that highway mileage because I do 60 to 65 mph and not 70.
Ram recommends draining @10k miles and replacing @20k miles. If you change @15k, when do you do routine drainage only? 7.5k or @ 10k when oil is being done? Thanks great videos👍
Hey brian, i was reading that in 2017 ford may be making a psd f150. i just thought you would like to know. I was also thinking that you might get an e-seies or transit for a travel service or when you travel then you could mount an air compressor, have tools on board, etc. That way you have tools and air both on board and more easily acessible. Just an idea. Keep the videos rolling
Thats cool. I know that I'm on ram ecodiesel source. Even though i am a die hard ford nut, I am glad you're doing video on other brands. Maybe you could do some on Subarus as well. Just so they are not left out. Just an idea. Thanks Brian
Thanks so much for these videos, they are so helpful. I've been using the fuel additive xp3. It seems to work very well. Have you ever heard of it. I changed my fuel filter only once in my ecodiesel and it looked a lot cleaner than yours, but I think I'm going to start changing it a lot more often.
+Bleedblackandgold51 I have never heard of it I stick with the power service or the hot shot's secret additive for now. I have to use them up first. Anything that boost cetane is good considering the poor fuel we have here.
Ram EcoDiesel Source hi you went with the ram 1500 eco diesel how’s it holding up? I chose the Tradesman 2500 crew cab 6.7 cummins with the g56 6 spd manual got the 2017 for 54,000.00 . Love the truck got 43,000 miles on it now. I’m lucky if I get 6,000 to 9,000 miles out of my fuel filters I’m guessing the truck senses restriction and lowers the percentage on fuel filter gauge in my instrument menu. Once it gets to 10 to 5 percent I change them out. I use Power Service fuel additives because Cummins endorses them. Do you still have the eco diesel? If so will you do another video on it?
Hey I've been watching all your videos to do work on my 16 ram 1500 eco diesel. I have 80,000km on it and I think I am missing a few Maintence jobs on it. Anyway you could give me a list on things I should check all the time and when I should do other things at certain amount of kilometers
Ram EcoDiesel Source.. Haven't seen any new videos in a long time regarding the Ecodiesel. Do you still like yours? I've go 11k miles on mine with no problems. Thanks
When I change the full filter I put a large plastic bag over the unit .then I unscrew it and the fuel is trapped in the plastic bag .and there's next to no mess on the drive shaft or the floor or your arm ?
Long shot to get a reply but I just completed the filter change. Primed the system 6 times. She cranked right up but in the fuel tank the pump is whistling. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed that before. Any thoughts? I’m probably going to swing by the dealer on Monday to see if they think it’s abnormal.
Where does one get a new fuel filter cap for an EcoDiesel. The used the removal tool from Geno's shown in the video and two of the fins on the cap broke off, I'd like to purchase a replacement that still works with the removal tool
Interesting find: a small matting of what looked like small bits of straw laying in the bottom of the fuel filter housing. Almost enough to fill a small sewing thimble. Had to come from some fuel fillup somewhere. I cannot remember ever adding fuel from any can. Anyone else ever find things in the filter body?
I tried to replace the fuel filter on my 2016 RAM 1500 eco diesel but when I removed the cup the filter didn’t come out, it’s kinda stuck in my truck. What should I do, can I just pull it down even if it’s hardly come off?
I agree with you,but i saw that video and wanted to bring to your attention. Maybe f150 will get a psd or something equivilant in the future. keep the videos rolling
I do hope so. I know this is ram ecodiesel and i like all your videos. I am a die hard ford nut and i am still glad you're doing videos on other brands GM Mopar and Imports. Just an idea maybe you could make videos on subarus because theyre flat engines instead of v or inline engines and the all wheel drive on them as well.
You have great informative videos. Could you research and pass on any info you have on the cam failures of the EcoDiesel people are having because of the cam drive gear slipping on the shaft. There is another UA-camr that has had his fail at 148,000 miles but they can fail if engine RPM is allowed to get around 3400 rpm. Since his is out of all warranties he's found a shop that has a fix for this problem in the future. His video titles are, 2014 Ram 1500 ecodiesel engine failure @ 148,000 m and 3 0L Ecodiesel engine bulletproofing part 1. Thanks
+mopar ecodiesel (dotcom) I saw it in one of your videos you said fiat didn't want anything to do with me and told the dealer to not talk to me anymore and the rant went on wasn't that you?
Yeah I saw the oil carryover and soot build up seemed normal to me I have been dealing with that issue on the Ford side since 2005 when I started there never seen a Diesel that looked any different.
Any particular reason why you’re recommending changing both the fuel filter and oil prior to the manufacture recommendations? FCA manual lists oil changes up to 10k miles and fuel filter change at 30k miles
@@icenbryse5190 the oil manufacturers disagree with that assessment, as well as independent oil chemical analysis. If you’re ok with the extra costs incurred for peace of mind, no biggie. Just want to make sure that everyone is aware
I was watching a different video where the guy snaps the filter in place first, then spins on the cap. is this a "better" way? should I remove my filter I just changed to make sure that it's fitted properly? your video shows you snapping the filter onto the cap, then screwing it onto the housing. which way is best?thanks. al.
There is no way around the mess with diesel fuel filters. I have the same problem changing the one on my 6.0. I change both of mine at 10k though. I dont like waiting for max recommended interval on any filters or oil change.
Thanks for the video. Changing mine today. Off topic, what do you think about a cold air intake in the 2016 ecodiesel? Been thinking about putting one in from S&B.
I picked an intake from Banks, and huge difference on throttle response, no longer have to go WOT to get the truck to respond. Just got my Exhaust from Banks as well, will be putting it on this weekend, can't wait to see how she does.
I will assume that the author has learned in the meantime to use a gallon zip lock bag to keep the process clean and spill-free. Otherwise an excellent and informative video.
Why didn't they mold a hex in the fuel filter cap like they did the oil filter cap? And I agree with the rest, this is a dumb place to put it. Thanks for the video.
I just bought a used ecodiesel from a dealer, they said it's certified, I saw the change oil indicator still good, how do I know if they change the fuel filter? Specially you working for the dealer, do they really change it or reset it?
You won't know until you pull it out. The best thing you can do since fuel is so important to the engine is replace it yourself and start your maintenance schedule from there.
+cvnapps51 that is just how the light refracts through it sometime it looks light green also this is totally normal and has to do with the fact it is closer to oil than fuel.
Ram EcoDiesel Source my dealer I take it to regularly to do my oil change recommended me to have them change my fuel filter for $400. I declined my truck only has 13k miles. So if I do it myself and next time I go in they ask about my fuel filter what should I tell them?
15,000 miles? You got to be kidding me!?!?! I have 200k on my truck did it once at 130k and am doing it again today. Just looked on youtube for a reminder. Maybe I got lucky.
OHHHH man my filter didn't look anything like yours. Mine was jet black. The new Ram filter has a plastic cage around it and it looks like there's a screen around it now too. Yea so I'm definitely not changing my fuel filter enough. For everyone's information when I loosened the phillips drain on the bottom of the housing I'd say less than an ounce of fuel came out. However, when I screwed the filter housing off probably got 10 ounces of fuel. I used a gallon ziplock bag and it worked great. I loosened the phillips drain and then slipped the bag over it and loosened the drain a little more. Just drain it into the bag there's no sense in trying to catch it separately.
what is the ram recommended fuel filter change interval? I think it's funny that you keep saying "i" recommend... did u design the system or seen 500 trucks that failed the fuel system if the filter wasn't changed at 15k miles? do u have science behind your recommendation or just a feel good?
I'm sorry I come from a world (FordTechMakuloco) where my videos and extensive knowledge are respected so I may come off as all assuming. The 15k interval is what works and is safe in my experience from diagnosing and repairing diesels since the Marine Corps 15yrs ago. With the advanced fuel systems in the new diesel engine being even less tolerant to contaminants and fuel supply I would stick with that 15k interval.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source ah okay. that's nice but I believe the manual says 30k Miles and 20k if u run b20 fuel. unless there is a known issue with waiting that long that's what I go by. I changed the filter in my 3 personal diesel pick ups every at 30 to 35k with zero issues. just don't want people freaking out over changing the filter for no reason;)
Hey I watched another video that stated to put the filter in first and then the housing second Inorder to make sure the filter locks in correctly. Can anyone comment. I replaced my filter based on the steps here without an issue. Want to make sure I do not have dirt going past this filter. Any comments would appreciated.
Sorry I think this was answered in later posts. I really appreciate your videos and have bought the tool to take the filter off and works great. Your oil video of the switch to rotella I used to get a free oil change from the dealership. The dealer was like how did you know about the oil. I use the hotshot products with every tank fill and at every oil change. Please keep it coming.
Great video. Wow if your filter plugs in cold conditions you have to crawl under the truck in the water snow and ice and try to see what you are doing. Better hope it doesn't happen after dark. What are the manufacturers thinking? This is a dangerous setup on the side of the highway. Deal breaker for me. I thought my Duramax was a pain but it is a walk in the park compared to this. Thumbs down Dodge! No need for this.
Gosh, thanks for the video. That has to be the 2nd stupidest place to put the fuel filter. I also don't understand why on earth these billion dollar companies still use those stupid screw cap drain valves. The tractors on my dad's farm had better drain valves and those tractors were built in the 1960s and 70s.
You come across as a reasonably intelligent fellow, but your inability to contain this mess makes you look like an amateur. For god sakes, man, use a gallon zip-top bag; let everything, fuel included--fall into the bag, and take it from there. Would have been a valuable video. Thanks for the attempt. Second, why do people always want to go more than the manufacturers' suggested intervals? RAM says every 30,000 miles. What's your perceived benefit of doubling the frequency of fuel filter changes? I've got about 85K on my 2015 and nary an issue. Just drained and refilled the 1.25 gallons of coolant I could get out of the radiator, and what came out looked about as good as the new that went in. I would have flushed all the coolant, but there's no information out there on how to get what's in the block out. I changed half the coolant, kind of silly, but better than nothing, and got a good view of what's happening inside the coolant system. Not a darn thing! This is a great truck. Oil every 10K, fuel filter every 30K, Air filter per manufacturers' suggested intervals, and coolant will be every 100K, since the Mopar product is good for 150K. Oh yeah, and brakes as needed. The dealership can take care of the recalls.
I agree freddiemercurious. It takes just a couple of minutes of UA-cam search to find the gallon ziplock bag trick. I just did it that way today and it was an easy, no mess job.
Take a 2 liter bottle. Cut the bottom portion off and put it over the filter housing and turnn them together. The bottle will catch a;ll the fuel leaking out. I do the same thing for my cummins oil filter so I don't spill any oil. Works great.
+Johnny Rocket I used a gallon jug. cut the bottom off, even has a handle to hold onto. (oh, put the milk cap on first.....)

You need to cover the filter housing with a large ziplock freezer bag when removing it. It catches all the fuel that you spilled all over.
Damn this is a great idea.
The freezer bag trick caught some of it but I still managed to nick the freezer bag while unscrewing the fuel filter housing and still take a bath. Maybe next time with the drain value upgrade and the freezer bag it'll be better.
I used a 20 gallon garbage bag and it catch almost everything.
When you reinstall your Geno's plug make sure it seats properly! If not, when you re-pressurize the system it blows out.
Brilliant!
Changed my fuel filter today at around 16k and I'm glad I did. The filer was black! I also took it for a short 20 mile trip afterwards and got 29 mpg!
This video and the oil change one just saved me like 700 bucks or more . Thankyou very much for making these . Can you do a egr delete video .
I've watched a few of your videos and am highly impressed. You do a fantastic job, your commentary is very easy to follow and your camera work is superb. I like the video that shows the burping then a funnel to catch most of the remaining fuel, instead of pouring onto rag and arm

If you put a big zip lock bag over the housing after you break torque , unscrew it by hand and mist times you don't spill a drop!!
I followed this all to the letter, great video! Sadly, the link to the brass replacement drain plug isn't working anymore. Using a plastic cup that goes over the filter housing allows you to squeeze the cup to unscrew the cap avoiding any mess

You won't know until you pull it out. The best thing you can do since fuel is so important to the engine is replace it yourself and start your maintenance schedule from there.
do you need to disconnect the negative battery terminal before you start working?? anyone? i don't see that as a requirement but want to make sure
Hi I own a 2014 jeep grand cherokee summit with this beautiful ecodiesel engine.do you know anything about the cam issues?
+Duviel Hernandez I know all about it on the 14's yes.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source thanks fow replying so quick ..so it means mine is in that list of possible failure?
+Duviel Hernandez It definitely could be down the road. If you are easy on it you should have no problems.
+Ram EcoDiesel Source what was their fix on the latest production ?
Great video! Thanks!
Where can I order the brass fitting?
Why not put a petcock on the filter housing and put a hose on it ?
Time for a new banner for your videos! Ford and Dodge Ram Specialist?
+Baxrok2 No not yet.....
Noob question. Why does some of the fuel dripping from the filter appear to be blue?
+cvnapps51 that is just how the light refracts through it sometime it looks light green also this is totally normal and has to do with the fact it is closer to oil than fuel.
Why does it have so much fuel left after the drain release?
Oh goodie. Thought my diesel bath days were over when I sold our 6.0 f250😐. Why do engineers hate us diesel owners so much? What did we do to them?!
Will it void my warranty if I do this myself and save receipts?
No just use the Mopar filter specified and make sure the job is done right.
Good video young man thank you
where can I buy the new plug and removal tool?
+Anthony Benenati there is a link in the video description
Ram EcoDiesel Source
guess next oil change is a fuel filter change!
do you have a link for the drain plug that I can buy?
+Brent Roberts Yes it is in the video description.
i guess that's where the "show more" button comes into play! thank you!
Do you not work at ford anymore dude.?
Please keep it coming.
i change mine every oil change easy enough to both.
+Gary Boyd This one is a bit hard to get to but on the Ford Diesels the primary filter is underneath also.
Anybody use sea foam when changing the filter?
a ford 5.0 would not need to work on it change the oil and hammer the Throttle! can never go wrong with simple engines.
😎👍
Wow- that's a crappy design. It would be hard to make it anymore difficult lol. That filter housing sure could use a nipple to attach a drain hose.
Why Engineers?? Why???
Jessiehardy
Lol good comment
Wow, crap oil filters to replace... made in china none the less.
Very Sloppy Method
