In this episode we check out the T-Rex Replicator - a real tape delay unit - in comparison with some of our favourite tape delay-emulating pedals.
There’s definitely something magic about using real tape to create delay and echo. From the early European units to the fabled Echoplex in all its guises, their unique preamps, idiosyncratic mechanics, involuntary noises and of course their utterly unique tones have captured the imaginations of countless guitarists. Not least us.
To whit we have finally got our hands on a T-Rex Replicator (first released in 2016). It’s the first pedal-shaped genuine tape delay with tap tempo that we know of, so here we compare it with some heavy hitters in the tape delay-emulating pedal world…

I liked it when you were both playing at the same time. Thumbs up for more of that.
+1 for sure!
Couldn't sleep. Now ordering pedals at 4am. Thanks?
+Jordan S Erm, sorry? Sleep's overrated Jordan. Pedals sometimes less so. ;0) Thanks for watching!
*Me at **10:20**am realizing it's Friday and there's a new episode, in Dan's voice* "Oh YEAH!"
I don't NEED more pedals. I can quit whenever I want to.........
mabecka that definitely is an illusion ;)
Just one more... just one more...
I appreciate you guys including something like the Tone City tape machine in this video. After all, if I spend everything on a tape delay, there will be nothing left for a Keeley D & M drive. ;-)
I have been hoping for a Replicator episode! I got one last year and it is quite magical.
I found out from T. Rex that the Replicator actually flips the phase of your dry signal when the pedal is engaged so that's worth noting when running a dry/wet rig. Thanks for another great video, guys!
I just LOVE my Replicator. Worth every dollars invested on the machine itself and new tapes. It inspires me musicaly. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for including such a detailed timeline in the description. When researching specific topics/pedals that you have multiple episodes on, it's a real time saver. Thanks again!
+JH Music Channel You're welcome JH! We know they're long vids so we try to provide a bit of helpful info. :0)
TPS, fueling your Gear Acquisition Syndrome since 2016.
nobodyhere 2015*
Joe Jenkins Indeed, the first episode was uploaded on February 27, 2015. I wonder whether their second anniversary will be recognized.
Another vid! I look forward to these every week. Thank you!
Yesssss Friday again. Just finished work and sat with a beer watching your show! thanks lads!
+The Piano Ghost Cheers! Us too. :0)
Godlike tone and playing from Dan with the Empress!!!!! Mick's playing as good as ever..... great episode
You guys made me cry, that Replicator is just too good!
The Replicator is a guitarist / gearhead dream pedal! I friggin' love mine.
All are awesome. I agree the T-Rex is special. There is something tangible, but yet hard to describe about it's quality.
Thanks for sharing.
Something romantic about looking down and seeing spinning wheels on your board.
+Gavin McLeod Tell is about it. My OCD (Mick here) can't deal with the fact they're a bit random. But if I squint it's okay. :0)
That took me a few reads- your OCD, just like regular OCD, not the pedal. I was like, my OCD pedal doesn't spin, what's he talking about?
I was looking for this yesterday and this morning. Thanks!
great to see you finally got your hands on one. great show.
its Friday and coffee and pedal time *heaven*
Cant live without your channel..
+E J Yes!
Dan and Mick, you all know more than most, we love pedalboard builds! I would LOVE to see some episodes focusing on some utility pedals and a focus more on function than sound. You've got bits in other episodes (buffers, power supplies, etc.), but wondering about a dedicated episode touring a board with clever functionality/design (set up to split for acoustic, multiple signal paths, etc.)
I have had the Empress for about a year now. I use the preset mode. A truly great unit. Nice to see you guys like it too!!
You guys are so inspiring to listen to when you are playing, especially though when playing through these wonderful delays! The El Capistan is one of the best purchases I've ever made!
+Joe Coombs Cheers Joe!
Now that was fun... thanks so much guys for taking it for a spin!
+T-Rex Engineering All power to you guys! We are inspired. :0)
Never stop making the Mudhoney. Incredible.
love it. all delays bring a unique attribute to the table & can inspire. but tape units... wow, in a class by itself. thanks gents.
+whisperthis Weird isn't it?! We felt it tooo....
love it when you guys use the el capistan ,it's my favourite pedal on my board and maybe only use it 5 times throughout the gig. great seeing you dial in sounds I never get to use 🙌
Is it worth the money to buy an El Capistan? What do you use it for?
Flashbacks to That Pedal Show Live last week when you started playing "Shine on...". Gorgeous!
My shopping list of pedals isn't getting any shorter guys!
Man I'm in love with that T Rex Replicator!
And I'm so envious you guys have the coolest job! Demo-ing gear 👍
You guys are having a blast diggin' on the Gilmour Shine On and Mr Sandman spacey Radiohead sound 🎼💜🎶🎵☯️
Great show. There is just something really magical with tape delays. That extra high end almost ghost notes that trail off just amazing!
+patrick b yes, it's so hard to put your finger on exactly what it is, but it's certainly very special
Oh and by the way if either of you are ever in the Pacific Northwest and need an amp. I have just the thing.
Mick's's playing was superb today, I think its cause he broke out his main strat again. He just has such a connection to it!
No one beats you blokes. Just the right amount of Tom foolery, wonder, and enjoyment of tone. Always a pleasure.
+Eugene wulf Thank you Eugene. That tomfoolery has taken years of failure to perfect y'know. Such promising careers behind us etc.... ;0) Thanks for watching!
Sick Tones Mates!!!
18:28 "Apologies if this is repeating ourselves..." PMSL
Great stuff guys, really good entertainment!
was ready to pull the trigger on the Strymon, but loving the controls and sound of the Empress. decisions, decisions.... great job as always guys! you make looking forward to Fridays!
Strymon's not entirely intuitive--you have to memorize the settings to some extent--but the sounds it makes are just nuts. The reverb on the delay is something I never knew I needed, but use all the time.
All the delays going at once actually sounded bloody incredible, now I have to get ALL of them!
+CammojoDragon97 Yes!
20:57 Sick As and the Tape Echo. Almost a Joe Bonamassa sound there. Love it!
Ive been subscribed to this show for little over a year now. Not this channels, but back when they were on ThhGigRig channel. I still love this show, and keep on crackin guys!
+Roger Ploch Thanks Roger - great to still have you on board! All best to you!
Mick's face at 13:58 is pure guitar joy
Always a great addition to my Fridays! I've found the tone city tape machine is great as compact slapback, set and forget type job
I just picked up the Empress Tape delay. I'm super pumped to try it out.
Sorry guys ... there was a bit of a delay getting around to watching this! gone are the days when you could tape an episode of your favourite programme. GREAT VIDEO GUYS, GREAt viDeo GUys, greAT VideO GuyS ...
Going to leg it home and get the WEM copicat out for the evening...
Thanks as ever for a great show chaps
The Replicator is an amazing piece of art! I love it! But it is BIG.
I've been watching TPS for almost a year. Finally broke down and bought a T-shirt and some picks! Another great show. I look forward to these so much! Easily my favorite YT show but also normal TV shows and that's up against The Walking Dead. Kind of apples & oranges. TPS always inspires me to play more guitar and experiment and TWD makes me glad the apocalypse hasn't come yet. Although with Trump, anything is possible!
Always a pleasure watching you guys. Such top quality production and banter! Always feels chilled out and nice, no pretentious bullshit. Cheers! P.s. New t-shirt idea; "Have a Schwang ;)"
The "Dan into Mick" drive into the empress sounds fucking epic! Made the strat sound massive
+MAHAM Thank you much Maham! We did start designing that T... it may happen. :0)
That Pedal Show, its destiny mate! I will buy one 😊
As always gents, great show!
I love my Mooer REECHO pedal and its tape echo mode is fantastic for lap-steel sounds. That said, the replicator is lush, but I'd need to be playing live a lot more than I do to justify that indulgence!
Nice to see a DWJ Rangemaster on the back wall :)
Great pedal.
Takes pride of place on my board.
It does on mine also
Well this help me quite a bit on deciding on a smaller sized delay pedal...so thanks guys!
'Apologies if this is us repeating ourselves...' - missed opportunity on a ep about delays Mick.
Fun seeing two of my favorite pedals on the show (Sick As and Faux Tape Echo)! Eerie... like looking at my own board haha. The Bondi has a second gain stage too. One has more headroom than the other, which gives you the ability to really sculpt your tone. Not to mention... TWO tone knobs!
As a _proud_ Replicator owner, I never intend to have another digital 'tape' delay. But if I did, it would be that Wampler - it's quite special.
As always, awesome show. I look forward to Friday's cuz of your show! Dan, you need to bust out that Gretsch more than you do. Just got a proline Japanese Gretsch and it's honestly one of the best guitars I've ever played. Love that anni!
Just got to the part about you guys getting a space echo, can't wait!!! I've got an RE-150 which is just the 201 without the reverb. Magnificent sounding thing!
Video was awesome. Love that you guys added the Sick As to the lone up. It has been a staple for me since I purchased mine some years back. If I'm not mistaken though I remember the Bondi builder John Ashley position on the Gear Page forum that the Sick As started out as a Klon type pedal but evolved into something fantastic all on its own. The dealer I bought it from mentioned this to me too. The Bondi Del Mar is a TS/Bluesbreaker type pedal that I think Mick would LOVE. Fantastic video as always and happy I was able to be a fellow pedal nerd for a moment with you guys
+TheLonetone483 thanks TLT, yes, we'll correct that in future vids, it is based around a klon, it's awesome!
The Empress has nice percussive sound. lush.
Nice comparison. The T-Rex was my 2nd choice. It really is a beautiful device. My first choice was MXR Echoplex Delay by Dunlop, together with the preamp and the Tap Tempo. They have captured the EP-3. Just gorgeous . I'm going to again ask that you guys check out Blackstone Appliance's MOSFET Overdrive. You'll thank me later.
dum dum dum dum, I finaly have a pedal that made it to the show. Thanks so much. The Empress Tape Delay. And yes it does so much more. Definitely my desert island pedal. Could almost loose my chorus pedal. My Empress tremelo is amazing also
Awesome! I freaking love you guys
+John Rigdon We love you John! Thanks for watching!
Day.Made.
Makes me so happy to see the Sick As!
Guys, it's not "drive in to boost" it's "Dan in to Mick" ;-)
+Tim O'Donnell Ooof!
You owe me a new computer screen. Mine now has orange juice all over it. Then I heard the part at 44:24 for ten seconds, and now there's orange juice in my keyboard. As always, Dan and Mick, thank you so much for the content. Best channel on UA-cam.
Tim O'Donnell 😃 the inevitable Future
Or Mick in to Dan by toggling the switch.
Dan will make it fit.
Oh my god. Shine On was just freaking magical.
I bought the Empress but have gone back to my 80’s Ibanez AD-9.
Here’s why: 1) clock noise, you can hear the Empress ticking; 2) you can’t run it on batteries; 3) it has a good preamp but it’s still running your dry signal through it.
Great show guys, would love to see you demo's of the oil can delay. I hear great clips of the Catalinbread Adineko & Old Blood Noise Endeavours Black Fountain. I'm sure these pedals would be "interesting".......
Very intrigued by that Sick As!
the replicator doesnt do a very convincing emulation of a digital emulation of tape echo
The d n m drive sounds outstanding, oh it's a delay episode, lol.
Man, to me, all of these amazing pedals sounds weak after hear that tape delay!! That's a beast!
Every time you guys make a video about delay, I find myself glued to the screen and I'm sure I'd learn something new. I think the only effect that guitarist, among other instrumentalists, can't live without is delay. Can I suggest you relate the types of delay to music genres. I think that would help many of us. That Replicator thing compared to the others feels like it comes out of bigger speakers. Does it have a reverb on top?
That moment at 13:50 is one of my favorites in tps history. Right up there with sore-ass-io
Even if the Replicator isn't the best sounding tape echo ever made, it's still night and day between it and any of the emulators. There's an unpredictability and something beautifully organic that no DSP can clone.
That said, the Wampler sounds great.
funny to see you experience the comparison between the Replicator and the simulation pedals. i had the same fun when i compared it to the EP 103 pedal both sound great, and once you are playing at volume the noise of the T-Rex is irrelevant. the new tape design has helped with the set up. but i had a older version tape in for many months with regular use and it is super reliable.
Man, I'm not all that much into effects, but what a fun show to watch! :D
Now that Valentine´s Day is out of the way, I can spend some sweet cash on my man pleasures again. Time to order some new pedals! Those tape delays are cool, but it´s the JHS Colour Box behind you that I can´t stop staring at.
Hi Mick and Dan you have made my day as I have awaited your thoughts on this machine for ages, now I knew this pedal was good but they way you play and push things a bit makes for more joyous experience. Now here's a suggestion for a show.. How about an hour show with you both playing solo with suitable pedals that float each of your boats and then play together. You could also show off your "tricks" like that split note of dan's in the "Where to put your volume pedal" video.... man they were killer tones... Definite aural bliss going on right now...
+SoundsandImages Cheers Sounds! Every show is sort of that, but without the playing together bit. It's weird - Dan and I were discussing this after last week's show. There's something very different about the performance mindset compared with the sat-there-on-UA-cam mindset. Trying to play with feeling and 'well' in these vids is very hard. We're discussing ways to improve that situation. Thanks for watching - great to have you along!
That Pedal Show a pleasure, the show is a joy. Glad to see it go from strength to strength from Dan's original thoughts. I have sadly had a forced sabbatical from music but fighting back. I can tell you both have great playing style and would love to see a jam or gig.. i missed out on the live event sadly but with the copyright limitations of playing others work on YT, just think it would be a great way to see you both let rip in your favoured styles... Going to the Paul Reed Smith event in Guildford next month, so looking forward to that.. Might give Dan a call next week as there are things I don't wish to put here... Cheers!
That was great! Every pedal except the Tape Machine really impressed, with the Replicator just having something magical going on. Not that it exactly fits, but you've got to get one of Diamond's delays happening in a video. Maybe the Counterpoint with its faux tape mode...
I know it's really expensive but DAMN that T-Rex sounds SOOOOO good!
27:57 "One thing about this pedal, it does WAAAAAHHHH". I don't think I've laughed so hard all month.
So many thanks for your show. I know a lot of people say out, but I want to add my thanks as well.
While not specifically pedals, one show I'd love to see is one on using multiple amps, specifically pairing them. Fender + Vox or Fender + Marshall or Vox + Marshall or Fender + Fender etc... What needs to be considered in pairing the amps?
You guys put me onto the Carpe Diem from Brazil...I love it. Now it's my turn. you must checkout the PalFX Pal 800 JMC Emulator from Venezuela. They claim it is quite literally a repro of a JCM800 schematic merely changing the tubes with transistors. A simplification I am sure ...BUT the sound is startling!. The attack on the note and lack of artificial compression makes this pedal 100 % convincing. I have never heard a pedal that sounds this close to the real amp. NEVER! I own 14 OD's all in the $250.00 USD range and I have bought several others only to sell them because they were very good but not stellar. So trust me this a mind blower!!! I must be persistent ...LOL ...this is NOT a pedal to have gone unlistened too!!!
Hey guys love the show! I was thinking of getting my first real tape echo and I'm stuck between the Replicator an old EP3 and the SS tape echo I know they are all tape delays but I'm not sure how they differ any advice would be much appreciated! (:
Can't wait to see their Binson version of delay with magnetic rotor!
Completely to my surprise as someone who tends to like darker, thicker sounds, the sound in this video that captured my imagination most was the Empress with the high pass filter on. It had such a cool lo-fi vibe without being over the top.
+Buxton Road Yep! Mick here. I kinda feel the same way. I've realised I like the high frequency mess in many of the tape delays.... which is exactly what's missing from most analogue delays. It's all a journey - great to still be on it! Thanks for watching. :0)
I agree. And it's kind of strange, because that's even the thing I have always loved about analog delay on my board (currently it's a Carbon Copy). That it's got this dark, thick, kind of reverby sound to it that sounds like I'm playing leads with my amp at the other end of a cave. In my basement alone it sounds MASSIVE.
But that high pass delay does almost the exact opposite. It doesn't really take up the frequency space that your guitar does, it's in a space that doesn't compete with the guts of your guitar at all, and it's got this really cool falling apart vibe that I would love to pair with my favourite style of fuzz tone (which I liken to an amp that sounds like it's about to explode) and rip away on.
Perhaps an interesting comparable as to why it seems so appealing... I recently mixed down some live off the board tracks from a concert, and spend a lot of time on ye-olde-google for tips, as my experience is intermediate at best. One of the things I learned is that when putting reverb on guitars, vocals etc, you can add so much more without it sounding bad or unnatural IF you EQ a lot of the mid frequencies out of the reverb, because those are the ones that get muddy.
Which is, I guess, exactly why you get so much clarity and shimmer from the highs on a tape, and why you can get away with so much more of the effect without losing the definition of your sound. I'm looking at that Empress now (and my wallet...) thinking "I could get away with way more delay using that pedal..."
P.S. One of the coolest things about your channel is that you guys are always jumping into the comments to talk gear with your viewers. It's cool for everyone to feel like part of the discussion. Keep up the great work. :)
+Buxton Road That's bloomin interesting about the mids in the verbs. Stands to reason when you think about it, but you have to think about... thanks for sharing Buxton - could be a topic for a show somewhere in here. Cheers!
Thanks guys, a very timely review for me as this will be my next purchase... Very interested to hear you'll be looking at an old space echo, will you be comparing it to the digital re-issue?
next purchase is a tape delay emulator of some kind I mean, sadly the T-Rex is out of my budget...
I preferred the sound of the Wampler, though I can see the appeal of the Replicator. I also liked the gritty, midrange quality of the Tone City pedal. It's maybe not the best tape delay emulation, but I think it's a very good sound in its own right.
I've got a Replicator and it won't play ma dang Skynyrd tape! I'm takin' this hunk o' junk back!
+TechMetalRules hahahaha
Turn it over man.
Is that FREEDOM ROCK?
I wonder what the replicator would sound like with ep booster. Something in it doesn't work for me completely. At first the repeats sounded nice but at the end it felt somehow messy.
I had the empress tape delay at one point. Lots of features, but it just didn't workout for me. Looking into the new version of the wampler tape echo
Something which rarely gets covered is the use of Expression Pedals. This makes things even more interesting and can make one pedal better for the player than the next pedal. I have an El Capistan and you can assign the Expression Pedal to any of the knobs. Not just one or two knobs, but any of the knobs. Wild stuff. Perhaps along with midi, perhaps a chat on Expression pedals.
And don't get me wrong, that T-Rex is badass. :)
+William Rustrum Good should William. We should do a show on expression pedals in general. Cheers!
As a note, I just discovered the Replicator has two expression pedal
inputs. One for Speed and one for Feedback. So you can adjust both
settings at the same time. Nutty.
Not sure if it helps anyone, but T-Rex have a new replacement tape cassette out. They are a real improvement on the old ones. Many of the 'issues' reported in forums have been addressed by this upgrade.
I've avoided the El cap for so long. I think I'm close to breaking down and buying one now. but wait! the wampler is very impressive as well. didn't think it would sound that good!
+Abram Treadwell No bad choices here. It's all good!
That Replicator sounds great
Love what you all do!!
I love the Replicator but have yet to play one.
Anyway you can get a Replicator D'luxe and demo it?
TREX made some major improvements to the Replicator and would love to see how they compare.
Cheers!
My goodness, the T-Rex is a breathtaking delay
33.35 a solo from Dan , strange look from Mick, Mick's comment "Not bad at all" lmao cheers guy's
That vintage Echoplex you played was sick... but this Replicator sounds great too. These tape units sound so clear, beautiful and natural... no matter how good the other pedals are there seems to be that synthetic... artificial... resonance...even small. It just makes a difference. I think you have ruined me for any tape delay that isn't actual tape!
@21-ish mins that Sick As into the Wampler sounded properly ace.
You guys should do a video talking about how different kinds of distortions and fuzz lean themselves to different genres and playing styles.
yay for the pink floyd bit!
Could you do a faux Dolby to get rid of the tape hiss? Maybe eq the hiss out after the pedal, then boost the exact same frequencies going into it.
Beyond stoked to finally see the Sick As (my favorite OD ever) on That Pedal Show. Any chance of featuring the 2015 blackout version on an upcoming episode?
