Low Buck Garage goes to Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino California for the first time to race a modified CRF230F in the prestigious World Vet championships hosting international Teams and individuals.
I use a Rackum racing Holeshot device and love it.

I am over 60 and want to race to!!! Great job!!
Only paid $500 for the bike, dumped another $1000-1200 into it , just to make it halfway competitive.
Needs another $1000 for power.
I'm impressed. you did great. you railed those outside berms & that was good passing strategy. anyway, I'm 66 & haven't raced since 1988. after seeing you I could be motivated to do it again. good ride & good video. thank you.
Thanks! Glad to be of service.
you did great on a bike half the HP of the others i love America you have some awesome
Thanks! 👍
Bro, That was nice-of-ya to give everybody a head start !
Riiiiight?
Next year, nitrous for the start. Thanks for watching.
Very cool..at 66 I started racing again..(on my 500 husky) 60+ expert class in Ahrma is the premier group. Lots of former factory riders and pros. At unadilla this year, 42 on the line guy next to me says "it's my birthday today" I say what are you 40? I know better it's a 60+ class.. he says I'm 73!..he was not slow.
Stay safe
The 60+ expert class was insanely fast.
Great ride man, hats off to you. I did a Hard Enduro on my 230, probably the only air cooled four stroke there. These bikes are underrated.
If the tracks could start running a separate class for the inexpensive CRF230F/150s TTR230s KLX140, etc. or more pit bike races - they might be on to something.
Man you way underpowered! Awesome riding skills and doing the best you could 👍!!!!!
Livin' the dream! Thanks for sharing.
Ok I am Hooked!!! I just rebuilt a 1999 KX500 that I have to bring out and race. I have never got in an outdoor motocross race, So now is the time.
I will be there next year. looks like so much fun. I got to have some of that fun. I liked your video, I will be passing you on my KX500. Sorry.
And I’ll be passing you on the last lap when you’re tired. Hope to see you there. Thanks for watching! 😊
Does kx 500 have more power than a new 450??
Looks like a fun track! you were nice and smooth out there, nice job!
You did GREAT!!!!!
Thanks!
Fantastic video! Enjoyed every minute good job
Thanks! Next year? But with more horsepower?
Great ride for the bike you had 🤘🤘
DUDE !! That was Awesome !!..as a Guy who rode a modified China Bike with a 240cc big bore kit..you did a hell of a job agenst those 450 slackers 🤣🤣👍 🏁 🏁
Yeah I noticed more than a couple sandbaggers in that class!
BRAVO SIR ! 45yr old from England
Thanks!
Oh to be 45 again. 👍
Great ride...💖
👏👏 well done ! 60+ DAMN !
Hey, nice riding ! Your solid mid pack finishes on a 230 is impressive. I love the "BEER" banner after the finish 🙂. Wish i was on west coast, id run that for sure !! Btw, ive ridden the 230 and one thing u never do on the start ON ANY BIKE is back off the gas when u upshift. Keep that throttle pinned and just slap the clutch and upshift. Ask the some experts and amateurs about it.
Ken,
+70, District 34, on the Hudson River
Next year, God willing, pin it - i will.
Outstanding
Thanks!
You Yanks are such lucky bar stewards, having tracks this quality and size to ride on.
Us “Yanks” are not just lucky, if you Brits, (Ausie, Kiwi?) wouldn’t have given up your gun rights, you could still have some land to ride on too. We keep our politicians honest through fear here in the U.S.
thanks for watchin!
@@lowbuckgarage1 I’m in the U.K. - South East. Don’t think we ever really had gun rights as they’ve had us under their thumbs since 1066. That’s why your ancestors ended up over there. We did have places to ride back in the 70/80s but huge home development and the anti noise (anti dirt bike) brigade have closed so much down.
good work on that 230!!!
Thanks ! 👍
Agreed. The 230 isn’t out of place. 👍
Great job!
Thanks! Great fun.
@@lowbuckgarage1 I'm 58 and still having fun on my 2017 TX300 and 2020 YZ450F.
Good job man! Inspiring to see this, I'm 52 and want to start racing in 2022.
Never too late to have a happy childhood.
@@lowbuckgarage1 Haha! I am! Just getting started.
I'm 53. Have not rode in 10 years or so. This gives me motivation. It didn't seem like nobody was riding dirty. Just out for fun. And nobody was trying to do crazy jumps or anything that would get you hurt.
Dam look at u killing it hahaha
I would love to ride Glen Helen
@LBG, 250F size FCR carb upgrade and she'll rip and help a lot in recovering from mistakes. Just my observation, but you past guys of equal skill likely, but they thought they needed a 450. There's more confidence on your size bike and passing 450's is priceless. Less is more.
Thanks. It has 30mm Xr250 pumper carb, pipe, and lightened flywheel, advance timing, but it’s not enough, the 450s still pull away.
I am 64 and slow but man I am not that slow! Man your just above idle I run with the 40plus AB guys, I get my ass kicked but ill always run mid pack!
Obviously you’re faster than me!
I need to step up my conditioning, I pooped out on lap 2.
Next year!
Very cool.
Good ride man! Honestly I feel in the older vet classes a 230 can hold up decently well. Start of course you loose out but whatever. More seat time on it at MX tracks and you’d do even better honestly. Also tends to be some sand baggers in these one off vet events, maybe a little lower gear up the hills would of done the trick and let it rev out a little more.
Either way good job 15 out of a full gate is rock solid.
I agree, I’m going to try 13-52 gearing see if it’s usable that way. Need a big bore kit and cam (and more laps) to be competitive. Tranny may not hold up.
@@lowbuckgarage1 pleeeease do a maximum effort build on this thing! It would be great content for you and it would be faster too!
@@baby-sharkgto4902 Yeah I’m thinking 240 big bore, cam, porting video. Make another run at World vet next year for top ten finish.
im 62 yea air it out. even if its a 230 . go man !
Yeaaaaah baby.
Damn good riding old man! I think you would have podium'd if everyone was on a 230! Did you lose a bet? Why are you riding that? This is the first one of your videos that I have watched, but I'm about to binge watch more episodes ;)
Thanks! Just posted one about bigger 30mm carb for 230.
If I was just another guy on a brand new 450 would you have watched?
@@lowbuckgarage1 I think the "racing mx at 60+" statement is what brought the views. That's what made me click on it since my old man races Vet A at 62. Actually, I didn't see anything about the bike size until the video started. Even after realizing that you were on the gate, why did you start a bike length behind? It's one thing to creep up on the gate but that was slightly excessive.
@@justlucky8254 I thought the next gate drop was mine, almost missed it! Racing there again 11/5/22. shooting for top ten this time, same bike, more mods.
my dad was in this race for semi pro tennis
cool track shame you didn't have faster ride
Excellent result. Is it 4 stroke only? Would love to compete with my KDX200. I know it’s considered a woods bike but I’ve held my own against some 4 strokes and lesser riders.
Its open, rung what you brung. But i wouldnt recommend the KDX unless highly modded.
@@lowbuckgarage1 I'm 53. Used to ride tracks for fun until I broke my ankle. Blew the forks out and broke the swing arm. Then after that just rode with trail guys. Had a ktm 450. That was 10 years ago. What would be a good size bike?
I'm getting fat. Look like a big sausage. So I don't know if a 250 would have enough power trying to pull all this pork around 😭 could I use a 500cc ???
My daughter used to race the Dinosaur class all the time .
The didn't like her much .
With bikes that lack horsepower, momentum is key. Stay on the gas longer. Brake later. Keep that gearbox singing. You did great though!
Thanks!
Good work boys, 3 of you would have beaten Jeff Walker!!!
Greetings from germany 😎 nice ride
Thanks! Many great riders from Germany.
Oh sh*t moment@4:35... 👀 Wall wall 🧱
Yes, good eye! handlebar end dragged on the wall for a second, about ripped my left pinky off.
@@lowbuckgarage1 😬
Over 80 class?
Some over 70s - I heard there was one 80 yr old.
Quit racing at 64 years old when my KX 450 broke my dang neck. I'm only 75 but I figure in another 5 years I'll have forgotten all about it.
Is that the only bike you have
Yes, for now. 450 is next. Keeping the 230 for my son, and me.
What's your age
@@guadalupepulido2978 61 - same as my race number.
Cool 😎 brother I'm 63 n I still ride in March of this year I bought a 2021 Kawasaki KX 450 the bike is badass Amen brother
@@guadalupepulido2978 👍👍👍!!!
Just change your rear sprocket to a 54 or bigger!!
You’re right. I’m going to try a 52 first, which will make 1st useless (fortunately it’s a 6 speed) and if a 54 causes no chain guide issues, I’m trying that out too.
Nice track I thought you did great Bud but I don't understand you said last place 17th out of 33 that' doesn't sound like last to me I have to agree with you not falling is a plus last thing you need is one of those old farts running over you. Other than your horsepower issue how all your other modifications do.
thanks! I got a terrible start, last place 33rd, but worked up to 17th. the suspension was pretty dialed in with the XR250R shock and Race tech valved forks. but despite the pipe, bigger carb, rev box, advanced timing, and lightened flywheel, it still needs the big bore kit + cam to be competitive. Next year!
@@lowbuckgarage1 Hi Tom! Nice ride! Maybe the gearing ratio is a bit high for this demanding track. I guess you didn't reach 6th gear often. The suspensions seem to work pretty well
The official results say I actually placed 15th - even better!
@@lowbuckgarage1 I would agree As long as you have fun and you don't fall down that's a good day
@@BenGallou You’re right, I was running practice with a 13-47 ratio, terrible. Switched back to 13-50 - was much better, but I may try 13- 52 and see. 1st gear will be unusable, but it is a 6 speed after all.
You’d have smoked ‘em on a 250,,
Kill the music 👎
Yeah you’re probably right.
