    Theres actually a very insightful documentary about why hannibal didnt attack rome, historians have two conclusions one is that yes it might be correct that he doesnt have the "manpower" during the time but rome wasnt a giant city during the 2nd punic wars, a siege is plausible and could lead to his victory. 2nd is that hannibal is a big fan of epirus and just like epirus believed that you can force the enemy to surrender battle after battle. But alas we will never know why he didnt do the thing he did or what couldve happened etc...

    Some minor things to bolster your short historical summary. The march over the alps and all that campaigning in Italia might sound like a crazy plan and it definitely was, but you also have to keep in mind, that Carthage wasn't the predominant naval power in the western mediterranean anymore after the first punic war concluded. Carthage in its own wasn't a faction solely united under Hannibal or the Barkas family. To use Hispania as a base of operation has a lot to do with how the Barkas became as rich as they were that could even afford to raise massive private mercenary armies and even attempt to bring the war to the Romans in Italia. Not everyone in Carthage was inclined to help Hannibal after the naval defeats around Sicily in the last war which crippled the former Hegemone of the sea. Carthage was a commerce oriented society and another open war with Rome might not have been seen as worth the costs especially considering possible risks in a defeat. Even if they wanted to, they couldn't cross the mediterranean to support Hannibal in the second punic war. They were only able and willing to send ships to transport Hannibal and his battered army back to north Africa to fight Scipio Africanus where he eventually lost at the battle of Zama

    Impressive micro against Hannibal. That battle almost went as perfect as possible. Could have relived the poor Hastati a bit earlier so they don't suffer such heavy casualties but since retaining that population class isn't a priority for you, you could argue that keeping the reserves longer can fill up possible gaps or support the flanks and thus are better kept as reserves

    Just catching up on these. The only thing Im usually sad about in most special scenarios fights ( Carthage/Sparta/Egypt/Athens) in total war is that fights like these are normally one sided. Yea AI seems a little brain dead especially for 41 unit stacks. By reacting off human player the ai doesn't have predetermined functions, but even in medieval 1 the ai responded really well to troop movement and you never got easy flanks

      Doesn’t help that he has a garrison helping too though…like every battle has been one sided this entire campaign…I basically skip right through the battles cause of how boring they are. I'm really loving the series so far. Never thought a Rome playthrough could get this interesting, but sometimes I struggle understanding how you get some things.
    I have two main questions:
    - it seems the key is a super powerful home province, economically wise, thanks mainly to the tax bonus, which I understand is done purely by the general governors (and a dignitary). So, how do you get that high armies cap? I get much less for the same levels of imperium, and have to use all of them in the field armies. Did you mod it?
    - what is the point of leveling up all the women characters of your family? So far you've only used them for an assassination.
    Thanks so much for taking the time.

    • @TWSummary

    I agree with some of the comments that say that is getting predictable the outcome of the battles due to the AI been not to good at battle.
    I think you should start having more Auxilia in your armys,like 1/3 should be native auxilia,Roma citizen units are just too good.
    btw in 1:01:10 thats the number of units left,not of how many they kill. just in 1:01:15 you can see that the Arjos Epones kill a total of 41 with just that unit.

    Super cool that you conjured Hannibal into the campaign,

      Yes sadly I wish Hannibal could achieve a lot more than he did, but the problem with that is I had two choices, just abandon Cisalpina and allow Hannibal to outright conquer it and then engage him, or fight a battle with him, which quite frankly, I didn't expect I would do so well considering he had an army filled with elites and I am purposely putting myself at a handicap with inferior Hastati (instead of Principes) and inferior Socii troops (instead of stronger Latin equivalents), purely for the sake of historicity.

    • @TWSummary
      @TWSummary  Рік тому

      Fun fact. Armies rarely fought in the forest counter to Hollywood. Cavalry was useless in forests, and moreover, the cohesion would be a nightmare. Armies would typically try to find a terrain that was as open as possible. Of course, it wasn't a flat open plain as well.

    • @manuel4964
      @manuel4964 Рік тому

      @@TWSummary Exactly. Tight formations of troops as well as cavalry would have great difficulty operating in deep forests and broader maneuvers would probably seize to exist in such terrain. Just for the purpose of battle oversight, fairly flat terrain is what most commanders would prefer as far as that was even possible in ancient battles. This was already a nightmare on flat terrain. Even from an elevated position behind the battlefield, they could never tell what was really going on on the battlefield. Messages to the commander would arrive with time delays and reacting to certain maneuvers would not only take a long time but the troops might not even be able to pull that specific command or attack off. This is why most battle plans were kept as simple as possible and more complicated tactics could almost never be implemented into an actual battle. Form up as good as possible in a neat line and move forward to engage the enemy with reserves that could relive tired troops. Just like what the Romans tried at Cannae. Such great tactical feats by Hannibal were a rarity and only worked because everything fell into place. Brilliant anticipation and timing by Hannibal and his troops, that could hold the line long enough for the Numidians to flank and encircle the Romans.
      For the individual soldiers at the front line, battle oversight must have been even worse. The battle noise - shouts, screams and the blows of weapons - as well as the dust and the inability to look over the soldier right next to you. Infantry could never tell how the whole army was doing so if some units got the feeling they were loosing, they could cause a chain route of the entire army just because they felt unsafe and fled. That's why the Roman army was such a good fighting force with centurions commanding their units from the frontline while being able to make maneuvers themselves how they saw fit. The equipment, formations such as the shield wall and drills so reserves could relive tired troops made the roman military a force to be reckoned with.

      Yea, I agree with you. The difficulty is hard for campaign and normal for battles. Hannibal did have a massively better army. Beyond that, there's nothing I can do to further buff him. For the most part, I see myself as more of a tactical and informative guide for players to the game, and less of the entertainment factor, like creators like Toxborg who lose quite a bit to keep things interesting.
