My only argument against Tip #7 is that in my own experiences I have found it EXTREMELY rewarding and effective to place a couple of units on the opposite side of the map during a siege attack (usually light/cheap units as they are the least effective in the attack, or more commonly I use cavalry because they are the most mobile units and can quickly cross the map to join the main assault once it is underway). It forces the AI to commit at least some of its units to defending that portion of the town against what it considers to be a threat, meaning that your main assault has been made just that little bit easier before the battle has even started!
Well tbh you can do even better, The main assault you should put hidden in trees and the air out most of their forces on the "fake side", by the time the air releases and sends the forces back you should be already climbing the walls.
I'm a beginner and this is my first time playing total war rome series. I started with total war rome 2. One time I was raiding a village in a grand campaign as a roman. I killed around 8-9cards enemy unit with just 5 cards of my troops. I bait all the enemy outside town using general and let my main army capture and defense the city. When my general exhausted and flee to the city. My main army crushed their archer, killed their general and routed their main army. It's a win with almost low damage and no casualties.
I've been playing total war for a few years now but it's always useful to expand your horizons on tactics. I'm decent in a land battle but just a bit less so when it comes to sieges. This is probably the first video I've found that doesn't overly explain it, thank you!
Complete newb here. started playing total war rome 2 a few weeks ago for the first time (my first total war game) this kind of content is Golden. Thanks! Can't believe I slept on this game series for so long...
The only thing I would add to this is that since patch 20 you have to be very careful with formations. The removal of spaghetti lines and the general improvements of how models stick together in a unit (even without formation attack) has helped with a lot of different things but when it does bug out (seems to do so less than before) it is much worse. Static formations (can't move) as far as I know are unaffected so if appropriate use those. I would personally only use square but that doesn't mean you can't find a use for the others. Pike wall seems to work most of the time but then again if it isn't a siege don't bring pikes unless you are confident you can use them and have a plan. The big offenders are shield wall and hoplite phalanx. They can really bug out and face your guys the wrong way, make them pull through inferior units taking a ton of losses. It is not that you can't use these formations just be aware if your men freak out turn it off immediately.
I'll be putting myself at beginner-mid tier. My main problem is that I can't tell left vs right and hence as a result I end up wasting too much time on one side of the battle and don't focus on the other. I always play Armenia for that matter!
@@FightMeTotalWar They have eastern Spearman which are just trash. They have a bad roster and the only good thing is probably their horse archers and even their starting pos is meh.
Great video. I was addicted to the original Rome Total War back in the day (plus some of the harder mods). But I've been out of video gaming for years, and have just installed Rome 2 for the first time. Compared to the original, it is definitely a step up in difficulty. These tips are very useful.
Lot of good advices. If a new one apply it to Rome of Hellenic faction , he will climb fast in skill. Well , some factions are still experience hungry...like Parthia , that is a King in many 1v1 , but requires so much micro and game knowledge.
I would say I'm a Mid-pro player at total war games. I only have about 155 hours on Rome 2, but I am an expert at the original. recently I got Rome 2 and I think it is a lot more fun and epic

Keeping archers on the left and targeting corners of settlements with siege equipment has also been super helpful. Thank you for the videos 🙂

Yesterday I played a battle where I was outnumbered 1900 to 2700. I positioned my army at the top of a hill to combat their main force. The enemy had 700 reinforcements charging me from the rear so I sent my 3 units of cavalry to harass and delay them. I was projected to lose the battle with only 18% of my forces surviving but I slaughtered the enemy with only losing 400-500 men. I love this game
Very useful tips indeed, but to be honest tactics counts for little against a campaign legendary AI, because it has advantages in every single thing! the most effective tactic that I found during my long years of playing this game, is using the terrain and buildings to your advantage, coz its the only thing AI can't touch, so when I'm being besieged for example, I start looking for narrow alleys and stack my troops there! seems to work most of the time, and the best tactic I use when I'm attacked by a larger force is the 20min battle option and playing "Catch me if you can" 😈
When you say AI can't touch buildings, can they not destroy parts of buildings at all?. I haven't played a Total War game before, ever but I'm really close to purchasing this 😄
@rywoodman4450 it depends on the building. Some are destructible some aren't. Pretty sure destructible buildings are rare, though. Please do get the game BTW its great

Im a veteran in campaign batlles against AI, but in multiplayer battles im a average -, especially in city assault...a lot of unexpected things happen and i need to getting better to react it...your tips are very useful, thx.
Only thing I'd say is that regular hopolites are decent as well. They won't get kills, but they're good at not dying in siege battles. Shield bearers from Macedon and the Selucids are also a very good hopolite, they aren't top tier, but they're very good for the faction they're in.
shield bearers are too expensive and they don´t have elite spear . they are a good choice if you want your general to survive for a long time even if he happens to be in a bad engagements though (115 armour is nice) however i think fightme missed to mention the most cost effective spear unit there is in the game for land battles - thorax hoplites - they are the best mid tier spear unit in the game , but they are limited to athens and syracuse ... and yes even regular hoplites can be solid if you know how to use them .
i myself enjoy playing hoplites cmbined with phalanx and archers/peltasts. In my long experience its a bit weird, but i usually dont have any issues with my hoplites, they are a great unit if you know how to handle them against other factions but they are a bit expensive. I dont care though because usually i end up stacking money because i have a great economy, no matter the faction. Maybe its because i mostly play greek factions on this game but, generally i dont think hoplites are bad at all, they are a great unit for their armor and defence stats mostly(for me).
@@mustakman well in single player you can beat the game with pretty much anything ... chevroned leveled up mass produced mid tier swords/hoplites will win you the entire campaign if you want ... but in multiplayer (competitive) battles you have to actually make your army composition as good as possible .

I thought the illyrian thureos spears were really good. They still have 5 javelins and even have cav counter tactic and very well armored for the price, and they are also much cheaper than standard thureos spear. Another good one is Massalian thueros. basically a more agressive version of standard version, same price too. Another good hoplite, imo, is thorax hoplite, they have weaker attack and charge bonus than the armored desert counter part but have higher morale and are cheaper to field, so you can bring more of them or save money for other units. Massilian Hoplite is also pretty good, basically a cheaper version of Illyrian hoplite for a little less stats, but compared to armored desert, they are kinda overpriced. I guess CA was overpricing units with morale boost aura too much. Finally, the late lybian hoplite from Carthage, you pay 300 gold for a very well armored spear units, maybe too well armored for literal 300 gold, with very high anti cav bonus on top allowing them to screen enemy's cav from your flank and archers. They can also soak up a lot of arrows, a perfect meat shield for Carthage. You can also put them in hoplite wall in some situation as well. highly recommended.
