I think Creative Assembly does better when they focus on smaller scale campaigns. Take Medieval 2, the grand campaign I had trouble getting into but the kingdoms campaign I played the shit out of. Shogun 2, possibly the best Total War game ever, the focus is on Japan for a small period of time. So far the DLC's for Rome 2 and Attila look better than the main game.

CiG, HatG are better games than the "grand" campaign. As with Shogun2, CA proved it can do well military campaigns or short periods of time. The reduced number of factions also improves performance. CA can't do large periods of time because they were never in the business of making grand strategy games. Without the adequate internal affairs, inter-state relations and the a well crafted experience of creating a legacy, it's harder to make it feel "grand". In the shorter games, you focus on a single general and its companions, you have a clear and pressing focus and all of a sudden things align "magically".

On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate this review at Over 9000.

Really good review! Just to point out around 4:33 you said that there was a famous siege of Syracuse in 218BC with all of Archimedes' inventions helping with the defense. The siege I believe you are talking about actually took place from 214BC to 212BC :)

Yeah you're correct. I went back to my source and I guess I read it wrong as they talked about the Punic War of 218. I remember thinking that the taking of Syracuse didn't line up correctly in the timeline against Carthage, Thanks for correcting me!

Fun Fact, back in the days just after ROME 1 got on the market the team brought out for what it is now called an extra MOD called BATTLE AT CANNAE, that one was exellent, wonder why it did turn up in the main package from the beginning.

Get it 50% off. It might be 50% off on Steam right now. It's better than Caesar in Gaul and is worth it for the Spartacus Rises mod too.

So basically nothing really NEW ! God I was so hoping they would change some of the awful game mechanics of the main game. Seems, I was wrong. and why the hell are the tech & family trees such a mess??!! What was so wrong with the old formula that they had to change 'em 360 degrees?!! CA ruined one of the best strategy game series of all time. such a shame...
