The 2019 Fantom has some nice features but the Fantom G still kicks azz!

Black Moses Beats yes and it’s a gamble with the new Fantom. I don’t think Roland will abandon it but if you look back. They did without previous fantoms. 2003 fantom s, then 2004 Fantom x and even the G they stopped it’s support and made just 3 cards then nothing. But at least the G was fully functional on its release.

Black Moses Beats it really does and that why I mad the video. If it only had a solid state drive lol. Really I would do one song and back it up as a project. That way I don have to worry about Phrases getting jumbled. Flash drives are cheap any way.

Ben Correll since I am still new to the Fantom G... how do you maintain the default patches that come with it in a new project though? Do you really have to do a project ‘save as’ every time? I did that once so I could start saving my samples and a test song to my usb stick... but it’s so slow! (Especially to copy the whole internal memory project, seemed like 10 minutes.) Maybe I should try an SD card with a usb reader instead of a usb flash drive, or usb hard disk, I don’t know. I thought I could always access the internal memory/project even from my own custom songs/projects, but it seems not, as when I did a new project from scratch, all the default patches were set to init patch. Also btw, I was looking at the old forums from when the G came out - I did not realize this but the G was also missing multi-sampling upon release apparently! And also had issues with larger than 2 GB usb sticks at first. So while they abandon stuff, there is also hope after all they will add stuff soon to the new Fantom. I don’t know though, the screen size on the G is perfect! Not sure why they went SMALLER, especially for a touch screen.

The new fantom its better, but Yamaha and Korg have better but not that a lot difference in quality. I have the g8, some specs on the g8 are superb even for this time. Like the sampler workflow, bigger screen. G8 have good power and still great for home users, only for a computer free system its good. Maybe the best ever. But the new generation have more power, better and more sounds, some better specs and some missing or still forgotten. Like vocoder, special keyboard playlike feature, app function. But when the time its good in price i will go buy 2020 generation, in 2030 i think maybe 🍀 But for now i still like the g8. I learn new things everyday and faster than 6 months back. Like how to use the effects on sound to have a better and bigger sound, use of the dynamic pad, use of the sampler to create my own sound

Fantom-G is still better than Kronos and Fantom. The DAW just works. Making multisample patches is soooo comfortable. If only there was a good librarian. Chicken System Creator works ok though.

I had trouble getting Creator to work well. Have you managed to find drivers that work for audio and midi with modern Mac operating system’s? Mine stopped working when I went to Monterey from Mojave. I’m required to use an audio interface now that is external, rather than the midi/audio interface built into the G.

Looking at my Fantom 8 after 3 Months.....I guess "they had a board meeting over there" ;) - if you know what I mean. And believe it or not....I a going to get a Fantom G8 to get the basic Idea of this philosophy and to understand my Fantom 8 better.....and what all they stripped away (after the board meeting). I just hope, they put things back to make the Fantom 8 a pillar machine again in a later Firmware Version....Thank you very much for putting out this video! All the best & be blessed, Martin.

I sort of gave up on the Fantom 7. Even thought it’s cool. The sequencer wasn’t for me. And the fx structure failed for use in multi mode. It’s not Roland’s sting point, as I own a jupiter X and integrals 7. Both sub par.

  • @jonlbarry

I still miss mine. The screen was awesome. Sequencer was nice.

One other thing that seems convoluted - what if you just want to copy a phrase but a separate copy? Is the only way to go into the phrase editor and make and rename a copy from there, then go back and insert that new phrase from the list? It’s cool that it makes linked copes by default. But if I don’t want them linked, it kind of sucks... I guess sometimes I could adjust my approach and add embellishments via additional tracks addressing the same channel/part, instead of the more usual DAW way of thickening up the events in each progressive clip on the same track. But if I just want something to change, but start from the previous clip’s note data... I wonder if there’s an easier way. Still have a lot of learning to do on my part, I know!

Hey Ben . im looking for a sampler/synth/workstation . This video is awesome . Would i be better with the Fantom G rather than FA-6 ?
Im a newbie to keyboards as in a guitarist but i do own a Korg Triton Le . Just want an alternative for my studio ?
Thanks for the video .....Frankie :)

sandypaws I would would look at the Fantom G. They’re fairly high in price. 1500 for a G6. But also I would wait until the next substantial update. I’m going to post another video soon in regards to the trade offs of going with an older workstation Vs the newer stuff. Btw if your interested in sequencing and sampling the MPCX is amazing. I’m fairly good with it.

Hi Ben, I happen to own one but one thing that's bothering me is that one cannot simply define key range fades (similar to Integra-7 or XV-5080) in Live or Studio mode. Fade lower and upper is done only on a patch level (if I am not missing anything) and that could have been a simple thing to solve with a OS update but I am guessing nobody from Roland is working on that anymore 😀

I have mixed feelings about the Fantom G.
Yes, 24 audiotracks, but if my memory is correct those 24 tracks are recorded to a max of 1 Gb RAM, which is shared with samples you loaded.
So, powerful specs, but limited by design decisions.
ARX was a very interesting move forward, yet in spite of Roland’s promotion of the ARX Supernatural tech on the ARX cards (which were expensive) only three materialized.
But I have to say, the Fantom G looks good, a big screen, they took the sequencer seriously, and it did not take long for multi sampling to be added with an update.
Which is more than can be said about the latest Fantom. However I remain hopeful that Roland will continue to work on the new Fantom, it has a lot of potential.

I owned a g for around six years and whilst it was a very creative and versatile board, to me the sounds were a bit pony especially the pianos.
