- I have been loving Fluval stratum for propagating! My alocasia corms have been doing so well! I ended up transferring all the remaining corms I had into Fluval Stratum as well as taking some bigger ones out and placing into separate pots with Fluval. I ended up repotting my Alocasia black velvet and transferring a few corms back in as well.

Hi, I don't know if someone else told you... aquarist's point of view about Fluval 😅... it's a Japanese volcanic soil substrate for aquariums... and it's not the only one brand on the market (for example ADA is the best and also most expensive 😅)... it definitely shouldn't be prewashed, you could ruin it... the nutrients in aquarium last 6-12 months, depends on plant types, quantity and growth... after this time you need to boots it with root tabs fertiliser or replace it... I'm currently trying Tropica for A.Amazonica for the first time (like ever and have no idea what I'm doing, they're my first corms - mother plant was given to me 2-3 weeks ago unfortunately with root rot from the shop) (sorry for my English and greetings from Europe 😊)
What are corms. I haven't a clue what you're talking about. I asked google to show me what fluval stratum is and it pulls up this video. This chick on here is talking about an ikea cabinet behind her that I can't see and mumbling about something else I don't understand. I'm reading the above post and figured out fluval stratum is a medium like perlite. Yay progress. Now to figure out what is CORM and where does it figure into fluval stratum. I heard chickie in video mumble corm but couldn't understand much of what was said. Speak clearer please. Speak up. Don't mumble.

Hi Melissa, Do you have a clip that shows the process of initially putting the corms into stratum.It's my first time using stratum .How deep do you place them in?Which end goes into the stratum first ect?
I just returned from a week in Acadia National Park. Very fun vacation but the rental house had no plants so it was nice to return home to my modest collection of green leafy friends. Plants certainly add a nice aesthetic to a home that is missed when no plants are around. I’ll be spending some time researching fluval stratum today. I’ve decided to give away 2 of my plants to make room for 2 new Alocasias. I like Alocasias and want to have a couple more so I need to choose which varieties to buy. Thanks for another great video.
aw that sounds like an amazing trip! The fluval is going great so far! I rally do love it. I have to be careful with the props in my cabinet since things dry pretty fast in there but the roots are definitely growing fast! I love alocasias too! I definitely want to collect more but hope you can find two that you really like! :)
I mix perlite in my stratum to keep it from getting too packed down and mushy. Just a little extra air flow.
That sounds interesting. Since your comment is a year old, how did that work out for you. Are you still using it?
That cuprea is stunning. The size is out of this world. I have decided I want a red cuprea. I think they’re beautiful.

You should try it out! I really love it and things are rooting really fast in it. I haven't noticed any issues just have to keep an eye on the ones in my cabinet since they dry pretty fast :)

Beautiful babies 🌱 I started with little plugs of a few of these and it’s interesting that my Black Velvet has done the best and I have babies of that in pearlite in a little glass terrarium. My silver dragon died I shall try again later . My Maharani was dormant a year and a half , I transferred to miss and she’s back with 3 leaves 🍃 so don’t give up !
The Dragon 🐉 Scale is one I don’t have but it’s stunning! My Frydek is huge tfs
Yeah it's interesting why it seems to be having the most trouble. I actually killed one before this one lol. It's doing well after the repot so hoping the corms and fill it out and it will do better! :)
I’ve been considering incorporating stratum and I believe you’ve just convinced me that I should.
I noticed that you keep your Mycorrhizae in a clear container (as do many plant tubers). I may be wrong but I have been under the impression that it is supposed to be stored in dark packaging to avoid sunlight. I don’t believe artificial light is harmful though so as long as it’s not in sunlight it should still be viable.

I’ll have to look into that! I didn’t even know 😂 I just liked the containers lol I do keep it stored in my closet which is dark in there! The packaging was pretty dark it came in so I’ll have to see what it says. I love stratum so far! I think it’s been pretty easy to use but still very new with it! ☺️

The baby alocasia plants are so adorable. I have an alocasia Maharani, and it was doing well for the first 6 months or so. Then leaves started to turn yellow and dropped , leaving only 2 leaves. Then it flowered twice, and the plant has been going downhill since 😥. Maybe it’s time for me to check for corm , and propagate if any . LOL
My maharani took awhile to keep more leaves. If you don’t plan on pollinating them I would cut the flowers off. They zap energy away from the plant and maybe why the leaves dropped 🥲 every time I get the flowers I cut them so it can focus on more leaves. Repotting can cause more stress but sometimes you can find some without messing with the roots too much! ☺️
@@plantsbymelissa Yes, I ended up cutting the flower stalks , after letting them grow a little bit (out of curiosity 😉). I think growing it in well drain soil and terracotta pot is not so beneficial to alocasia. I will need to experiment with a different soil mix .
I'm the opposite. My black velvet has a huge leaf and is growing and I've been through 2 cupreas and I struggle with most jewel alocasias. I don't rinse either.
I just used stratum for the first time to root some tissue culture. I’m hoping it’ll work out!
FYI: Fluval is the brand name. The product is stratum.
the product is volcanic soil :) stratum is a broad term which means a layer of rocks in the ground.
I have a few plants and stratum. So how do I know when the plant needs to be watered like the clipping :)
Do you save and reuse the leftover dirt for a later date? Fluval looks like it works so well for props! Thank you, always for sharing your knowledge of plants with us.
I don’t save the dirt no just because I don’t want to cross contaminate using it for another plant. I may have a couple times if I ran out of mix lol but I usually just get rid of it 😁
My cuprea is on its last leg but my black velvet is thriving. What’s easy for one person is a struggle for the next. Thank you for the great video.

I've had my Alocasia Ninja corms in fluval for I want to a little over week and no signs of roots yet! How long does it usually take?

I have some alocasia videos if you haven't seen them! I have them saved under my alocasia playlist tab! Corms grow off the roots - you can find them mostly in the soil. They will produce new ones and sometimes when you repot you can find a lot to none! It depends on the plant but the more time they have to grow they will most likely grow more :)
I don't rinse my stratum either. It's basically compressed volcanic Ash. Rinsing it kind of defeats the purpose, I feel. I always rinse my perlite, pumice and pon, though. Although it's volcanic rock, the dust turns gummy when it's wet. The trace minerals might be good, but I feel like that will cause a lot of water logging in the soil. It's not worth it to me.
I've been caring for a peace lily for a couple years and just started branching out to other plants. I LOVE Alocasias, they're the first plant that kinda blew me away with how crazy they look. I have an amazonica and a silver dragon so far. Just curious, do you let yours go dormant, or do the grow lights keep them going year round? Great video!
I don't understand what's the purpose of putting the cup with holes in a cup without, instead of putting it directly in a cup without holes ?

Stem with roots is better then a stem with a leaf and no roots.

You're welcome! I haven't tried the other one. I've only been using the fluval for a few months now but I love it and things are rooting so well!
Melissa Ive had my Polly for 14 months and it even gave me an inflorescence back in January. Would it be safe to unpot it to check for corms. She's doing so good I'm afraid to change anything 😬😁
It’s a tough call! Heading into the cooler months I would probably wait until spring so it doesn’t stress but it could do just fine. I repot all year if I need to. If it’s not root bound or it doesn’t seem like it needs a repot I would honestly wait 😊

What about washing in between uses, between plants ?
I haven't really thought about that yet - I might just take some of the fluval and pot it up with the plant but the more you rinse it, it washes away so I'm not sure how helpful that would be.

How often do you water the fluval?
Hi, it depends! I have some in my cabinet that dry out quicker and some set up in semi hydro that stay moist longer. I have to check them often and just make sure they don't go completely dry. I top off my containers often :)
Do you suggest statrum for propagating monstera albo?

What are corms 🤔
As many plastic pots you put holes in, why not invest in a soldering iron? Would go so much quicker and give you more routine holes.
The plastic pots I buy have the holes already so I only add them to my plastic cups and it doesn't take much effort!
Where did you get the box that your fluval stratum is in. And what size it it. Should tell you some where on the box. Maybe on the bottom.
