So happy for this Alocasia video, I have been watching your journey with them and decided to try a couple. Went cheap and purchased 3 at Walmart to test my ability. I moved them to a Pon with some perilite added. No stress so far this week and new leaves opening up already. Another addition….thanks 🤭

hi Melissa im a big fan of alocasias so i really enjoyed this video 🙂 I also wanted to share a tip with you; alot of selfwatering pots that use a wick are sold with cotton wicks which end up rotting after a while. Hi Melissa, nice video as all of them are! I don't like wicks either, but have learned how to deal with them. They are nice when you want to go on vacation! 😀 one thing I do is trim the bottom wick so when it hangs down it just barely touches the bottom, this alleviates the long tail in the reservoir. Then when I am planting I pull it up on one side and sometimes let it hang over an inch or so...then plant the plant in pon and trim the wick on top so it is hidden. The water will wick up to the top this way. I know that last potting was doubled so you have both wicks down in the reservoir. If I accidentally get one like that, I just do the one hanging tail, and hold it on the side as described. It really does work beautifully and a double wick did not spread the water evenly, and it makes the bottom of the pot soggy. Just suggestions which mean nothing. I have grown African Violets over 30 years using wicks, so have learned how to control my water. Root rot on self watering is a real thing!!
Hey Melissa, put the leaf that came off in water. It will root and grow leaves! I did that and after a couple months I took the leaf out of the water and it had a new leaf starting to sprout. It has 2 now. 😁

Hi Melissa, Thank you so much for sharing this video! 💞 I absolutely love pon and can’t thank you enough for showing us how well plants love it! I have 3 alocasia s in pon and a bunch of marantas and calathea s in pon. They are loving it!😍 I was just wondering if you ve experienced using pon with philodendron plants like variegated Florida beauty ? I was looking for videos on them, but couldn’t see any. Maybe I just missed them? Btw, I love your cats. ❤
I just put 2 pollys in pon today. I did get some corms out of one- 8 total. I'm new to corms, so I googled what to do. I ended up putting them in a shallow tray with a little bit of water and a lid. Then i see your video. I dont have the medium that you used nor do i have heat mats. It'll probably take forever.
I'm starting to really love alocasia 😊 and that Jacklyn 😮 oh my goodness! ❤️ It is beautiful! What tips or advice do you have for them? I just got a baby one.
I agree that Alocasia Jacklyn are no joke! They are so beautiful. I just transplanted mine about a month ago and I had her deep enough in my seven inch pot, but one day when I came home from work it had almost fallen out of the pot and was literally hanging by one root because she was so tall and heavy. I see they have a Jacklyn variegated which I was unaware of until recently. Wow!
@@plantsbymelissa Thankfully, yes she’s fine. I think I caught it quickly. Thanks for asking! Sorry it hasn’t been an easy one for you. The Cuprea gives me a run for my money 😆

Hey Melissa! Your alocasias are so gorgeous!! Absolutely love your content. We can see how much work and research you’re putting into your videos and plant care, and it’s absolutely amazing that you’re sharing all of that with us! I’m going on vacation for 20 days soon and was wondering if you have any advice on managing plants during this period (I don’t want to bother my friends). I read that putting plants in a clear box could help them retain moisture while letting lights in. Would you recommend that? I know there might be a risk of mold, but I’m wondering if it could be worth it. I’ve seen you use acrylic shoe boxes to keep plants in, which I find absolutely brilliant and so pretty. Are those airtight enough to work as mini greenhouses or should I go with sterilite kind of boxes? Cheers!

might have an Idea for your pole watering. I always wonder why I have never seen someone use a automatic watering system for their mosspoles. Ok, not completely true, I saw housplantygoodness use one for vacation, but can´t remember if it was for mosspoles or not. I used it for vacation and it worked great. now most of my poles are very short and it´s hard to adjust the watering amount properly, so definitly get one where you can set the time very short, but for my bigger pole it´s quite nice. I set it so that it´s a bit too little water, so I still have to check and top it up sometimes, but it doesn´t get so dry that the plant wilts even if I don´t have time to check for 2 weeks. I plan to get a few more plants on proper sized poles and want them in one row all supported by the automatic watering system. I just have a clear cup with a small hole on top of my mosspole where the water pours into, and I can always just fill the cup by hand if I think it needs more.
Hi Melissa. I recently ordered a Cuprea red secret which came with 5 or 6 leaves but they are very short and stems are very bent so leaves are facing downward. I unpotted it and put it in water to try to grow more roots. I potted it into Pon and it seemed to be quite happy for the last 6 months except for the bent stems. Would you have any idea why my plant seems to be so different to everyone elses Cuprea red secret?
Do you add cal-mag and fertilizer on your plants at the same time? I am new at adding cal-mag and I am not confident that 1) its really needed and 2) can you over due it? Thanks Melissa!!!
Ugh I didn't know I could grow new plants from those stumps. 3 wks ago when moving my Polly over to PON I discovered that same situation where the lower section had no root so intuitively I cut it off just from experience growing flower tubers in my perennial landscape borders. I should have known 🤦🏻♀️. Warning about the heat mats... If they don't come with a heat regulator they can get very hot and dry out your seedlings/corms frying them. Some seeds won't even germinate because they get too hot so I don't know what the threshold for alocasia germination would be.
aw 🥹🫶 good to know about the mats - it doesn't appear to have a regulator as far as I know.I know this brand is very popular or at least I see people using this one. I'll definitely keep an eye on them!
I am not a fan of heat mats without a thermostat. In my experience heat mats get to hot and cause more issues. Especially if the container I was using was shallow.
I really love stratum and corms/props seem to root really well in it. You can root them many different ways though. You can use moss, perlite or even just a little water.
Do you every let your alocasias dry out before refilling the self watering pots. im not sure if a few of mine are having edema issues but i know otaku plants have talked about making sure you dry them out before watering but i wanted to know if you have the same routine
I don't let them dry out 🫣 the only way they get dry is if I'm behind on watering them. I try not to overfill the reservoir but I still get edema with some of mine. I think if I had more time to water them every few days I wound't leave as much water in there but that's not possible for me and caring for all my other plants. I can barely keep up with watering right now esp in the warmer months.
I'm growing them all in pon, yes! I've slowly been moving my alocasia collection over to it. Any new ones will get transferred as well. I was a little scared to try it at first but it's honestly been the best change for them!
I’m sorry 😢 I am only growing mine is pon now. They really love it and it’s a lot less maintenance for me. I felt like in soil I was under watering them a lot.
I went over in detail and step my step in my pon care video recently :) I use silica, Fert, cal mag, stress coat and adjust ph Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/DsjvG3VLWfk/v-deo.htmlsi=o2HuKdta7jEO0E7H
@@plantsbymelissa my sister has opened a plant store and does not take care of them. I have revived all of them after winter and there was huge leaf less alacasia and I got them to grow huge. Now she got new plants and they have pests. Behind the leaf there is something like dry slime and under it there are black dots and they kill the plants, it is some kind of spider* mits, but does not show those weird nets. I got some new pricy plants for my self and pests got them too. She doesn't care, so I had to take care of her whole greenhouse to stop it. Yesterday was the first round... I just covered all the roots that were growing. They can grow in water as long as you’re providing nutrients.
How many plants will your d.i.y pon pot transfer? I want switch some plants to pon.
Where do you get those pon pots from?
🌻
❤
😊👍
You got a new couch?! 😂
It's my brother in law's! haha. They're downsizing their home so we got one of their couches. Hubby loves it because it reclines :D
I am not a fan of heat mats without a thermostat. In my experience heat mats get to hot and cause more issues. Especially if the container I was using was shallow.
So sad about mine . All the leaves died off so I moved what's left from soil to water 😅
How do your stumps not rot where you put them straight into medium before they callous over????
They callused a little bit 🙊 in my head it was already in water for a while so it’ll be fine 🫣
What else besides stratum could I use for the corums? Why stratum?
@@plantsbymelissa thank you yeah I feel like I'm in the same spot :( sorta why I moved over to pon for the self watering pots lol
HOW DO YOU GROW THE CORMS, PLEASE
Or sit the alocasia on the floor. Close to the grow light but not get burned
Good afternoon, tell me what you water and what kind of land you use Alokasia
Your maharani is stunning.
Do you put all alocasia in Pon? I want to move my red secret to Pon. But a little scared
I'm growing them all in pon, yes! I've slowly been moving my alocasia collection over to it. Any new ones will get transferred as well. I was a little scared to try it at first but it's honestly been the best change for them!
Killed my black velvet. My baby plant zebrina is in the one leaf club. I have not leveled up to Alocasia yet.
I’m sorry 😢 I am only growing mine is pon now. They really love it and it’s a lot less maintenance for me. I felt like in soil I was under watering them a lot.
I do have her in Pon. She's only three inches high, still a baby.
Hi. What nutrients are in your water? Sorry if you've previously shared this.
I went over in detail and step my step in my pon care video recently :) I use silica, Fert, cal mag, stress coat and adjust ph

@@plantsbymelissa Thanks so much Melissa! Appreciate the video. I'm new to your channel. Can't wait to see growth in my plants. Smile 😊
I haven't watched your video yet. I hope your plants are doung great though....because mine aren't. We will see what will happen in two weeks.😅
Oh no! What’s happened to them? 😢
Sadly thost pest control products are all harmful.
I used abamecin and malathion, apply 1th day, 4th and 11th day...
It is not my job, but I have to do it.
I've read that Alocasias are highly toxic to cats. Does your kitty bother them?
I can hear the corns land with a thud when you drop them in the table 😊
Your alocasia cuprea is so much prettier than mine, I am a bit jealous!! 😝🥰 They are about the same size, but mine is greener, less metallic looking and the leaf abs are much less narrow. 😞 Mine was sold just as a regular cuprea, I do not know if cuprea "red secret" is a different variety or if you have been blessed with a particularly beautiful one, but it's stunning, congrats! 🥰
You just need to put more water in the bottom.
You say you love her, but you left her in water forever 😢
I love my moss poles too and they’ve been very neglected. My priorities have shifted somewhat to running a plant shop the last few months which is a lot of work! I have put off a lot of plant care and projects lately.
